Then people only argued about how best to switch from 93rd to 76th, which some good people sold to other good people at half the price, or even cheaper.

The next stage of increasing the octane number is the use of additives:
- The first type of additives – metal-containing additives based on lead compounds – was widely used in the last century in the USSR (the final product was leaded gasoline). Such additives worked very effectively, but caused harmful emissions into the environment and for this reason are completely prohibited for use.
- Additives containing manganese or iron compounds (ferrocenes) have proven to be less hazardous to the environment. Understanding the basics of the technological scheme for gasoline production also leads to an understanding of the reasons for the appearance of low-quality fuels on sale. Unfortunately, the formal requirements for gasoline quality in Russia do not fully coincide with the requirements of European standards, and the inscriptions at some Euro 5 gas stations are nothing more than advertising.
Accordingly, a set of additives can ensure compliance with the requirements regulating certain parameters of gasoline, but the quality of the fuel will be unacceptable (as experts from the magazine “Behind the Wheel” once showed with a specific example). What is the difference between 92 and 95 gasoline in terms of dynamics and fuel consumption?
Are there any differences between 92 and 95 gasoline in dynamics? Two cars were chosen for testing: Renault Sandero and Hyundai Solaris with a more powerful and modern engine. The test consisted of checking maximum speed, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h, and elasticity (acceleration from 60-100 km/h in 4th gear and from 80-120 km/h in fifth). As a result, we were able to obtain the following data:

The difference in gasoline for Hyundai is small: only 3 km/h at maximum speed and a little more than a second when accelerating from 80-120 km/h. More noticeable differences are noticeable in the Renault car, where 95 gasoline allowed the maximum to reach 8 km/h. more. The difference in dynamics became even more noticeable at the elasticity stage, when using AI-95 the car accelerated 7 seconds faster!
Consumption of 92 and 95 gasoline
Both cars continued to explore the site and, using gasoline of each brand, covered a special route along a 100 km long training ground, simulating urban conditions.
As the results showed, the difference in fuel consumption for different gasolines in this mode is more noticeable. For the purity of the experiment, the cars moved in pairs, and the drivers did not change in different races.
New gasoline was poured into the tank only after the old one was completely used up.
According to the test results, it turned out that Hyundai, when using AI-95, was more economical (15.6%), and Renault by as much as 27.3%. When converted into money, we can conclude why 95 gasoline is better than 92: per 100 km. on Solaris the savings will be 25 rubles, and for Renault the savings will be even greater - 80 rubles!

It’s impossible to count how many copies have been broken around the age-old question of which gasoline is best suited for the “heart” of a car.
Adherents of using one type of fuel or another have a lot of arguments to convince their opponents that they are right, and in the vast majority of cases they succeed.
Moreover, both with the help of information materials and personal experience, which, as a rule, is more powerful evidence. How to determine what kind of gasoline you need to fill your car with?
The easiest way to determine the type of fuel suitable for your vehicle is to use the car manufacturer's recommendation. They are indicated in the vehicle operating instructions, as well as on the inside of the gas tank flap.

Foreign-made cars sometimes display numbers that are exotic to us: for example, A91 or A96 gasoline.
In some countries, for example, Japan, there is no division for A-92 or AI-95 gasoline, which is familiar to the Russian driver - there are only two types of fuel, Regular and Premium, which, in fact, correspond to the indicated Russian brands.
But let’s give it its due: on officially exported cars, manufacturers indicate markings that are understandable on any continent. A surprise in determining the type of fuel suitable for your “iron horse” can only await a car enthusiast who has bought a “gray” car.
As a rule, in the operating manual and on the gas tank flap, the manufacturer indicates gasoline with the lowest octane rating that can be used to “treat” the car: that is, if it says A-92 (American models may have A-91), then fill in gasoline brand A-80 is strictly forbidden.
It happens that Russian car enthusiasts disdain the manufacturer’s recommendations and fill the tanks of their cars with the cheaper fuel.
What can such tricks lead to? The fact is that automakers write recommendations for a reason: they, like no one else, are aware of what kind of fuel the engines of their models can “digest” without causing damage to the fuel system.
Automobile company engineers obtained this data as a result of many hours of testing with various brands of gasoline - therefore, they thoroughly studied the effect of the substances contained in the fuel on the parts of the fuel system and engine.
Of course, not all manufacturers take into account the quality of Russian gasoline, which at a gas station may be sold under the brand name AI-95, but in fact be AI-92.
In addition, not all domestic fuel producers meet the standards required to produce gasoline with the “correct” octane numbers.
But this circumstance is on the conscience of the owners of oil refineries, owners of gas stations (where, as you know, they can “tamper with” the composition of the fuel sold) and should be under the control of law enforcement officers.
We can state: the consumption of gasoline by an engine that is not authorized by the manufacturer can lead to very sad consequences. For example, failure of spark plugs, clogging of the fuel filter, breakdown of the lambda probe, which will be followed by excessive fuel consumption and, as the most serious consequence, malfunction of the power unit.
It would seem that everything is clear: since it is written in the operating manual “do not pour gasoline with an octane rating of less than 95,” then do not pour it, and your car will serve faithfully for a long time. However, there are exceptions to the rules. I will give an example from my own practice.
For quite a long time I fueled my new car only with fuel recommended by the manufacturer with an octane number of 95. But once I stopped at a gas station of one of the leading brands, I filled up with low-quality fuel, and the car stopped driving.
Fortunately, there was no need to clean the injectors or replace spark plugs (at that time, the mileage of my “iron horse” barely reached 5 thousand kilometers).
But the situation made me think: is 95 gasoline really that good? Here, too, fuel prices went up, and friends who drove the same model of car advised: try, switch to 92, you won’t feel much of a difference, except that you’ll lose a little power, but you’ll save.
After hesitating for several days, I decided to try it and poured 15 liters of 92 into the tank. Nothing extraordinary happened: I didn’t feel any significant loss in power, fuel consumption decreased slightly. I would like to note that I switched to gasoline with a lower octane number four years ago, and when undergoing a scheduled technical inspection, the service station workers did not make any complaints about the condition of the spark plugs, assuring me that they would cover several thousand more kilometers.
The sad end to the candles came after I refueled with low-quality fuel: the speed began to jump, fuel consumption increased, and the engine began to detonate (it began to “triple,” as people say).
After they flushed the fuel system, replaced the “dead” lambda probe and installed new spark plugs, I asked the technician whether the breakdown was caused by the use of gasoline with a lower octane rating than the manufacturer recommends.
To which I received an intelligible answer: the octane number had nothing to do with it, the reason was the quality of gasoline (presumably high lead content).
“In Russia, 95th gasoline is the same 92nd (and sometimes 80th), only “ennobled” with additives that not only increase the octane number, but also lead to fairly rapid failure of the spark plugs,” - the master explained to me.
And he added: there is no guarantee that a car running on high-octane gasoline (A-98) will drive better than 92 or 95. The same applies to the so-called branded gasolines - AI-95 Premium, Ecto, Pulsar, which are a simple marketing technique: their composition is practically no different from standard 95 (with the exception of some additives), and their cost is several times more expensive . Subsequently, I heard such revelations from other specialists.
Of course, I do not call for refueling a car with 92-grade gasoline, which, as it may seem from the story I described, is cleaner than 95—every car enthusiast must make a decision based on his own conclusions.
As practice shows, the octane number of gasoline is not as important as its quality - the same content of lead, additives and other not entirely useful substances that over time damage spark plugs and other elements of the fuel system.
