How to install cruise control on a Toyota Corolla?

Cruise control Toyota

This cruise control system was developed and tested for Toyota Avensis, Premio, Allion with a 1ZZ-FE engine. It is assumed that this system will also function correctly on other cars (Corola, Auris, etc. with 1ZR-FAE, 1ZRE FAE, 2ZRE-FAE engines, which do not have cruise control as standard).

Specifications

Supply voltage 9 – 18 V
Current consumption 50 mA
Gas pedal voltage 3 V
Control element buttons/joystick
Number of lines to connect to the car 6 (or 8 using joystick)
Speed accuracy +/- 0.5-2 km/h (depending on the terrain)
Operating temperature range -40 – +85 °С

The package includes:

  1. QC device (1 pc.)
  2. Wire for connection (1 pc.)
  3. Limiting resistors (2 pcs.)
  4. Fuse 0.5A (1 pc.)
  5. Branded joystick (optional) (1 pc.)

The cruise control module is used to improve driving comfort on long routes. The device allows you to reduce driver fatigue by automatically maintaining the required speed. Cruise control can be controlled either using buttons built into the module or a proprietary lever (additionally installed in the steering wheel).

Cruise control is connected to the accelerator pedal without breaking the circuit, thereby allowing you to gain full control over the movement at any time (accelerate to overtake). Cruise control is automatically deactivated with any brief press on the brake (clutch) pedal, which also makes the system safe to use.

Cruise control (CC) can be controlled either using buttons on the cruise unit or using a plug-in proprietary joystick.

Joystick control Button control
Cancel – disabling the CC unit (the same action will occur when the brake/clutch is pressed). If the maintenance speed was previously set, it is stored in memory and can be restored later (see below)
Up – If before pressing the CC was inactive and the hold speed was stored in memory, it is applied to execution. In the KK activity mode, when pressed, the hold speed will be increased by 2 km/h (but not more than 120 km/h); when held for a long time, the speed will continuously increase, and when released, the current speed will be the holding speed
Down – If the CC was inactive before pressing, the current speed will be accepted as the hold speed and the CC will be activated. In KK activity mode, when pressed, the holding speed will be reduced by 2 km/h; when held for a long time, the speed will continuously decrease, and when released, the current speed will be the holding speed
On/Off – short press – the holding speed will be set to 78 km/h (if necessary, the CC will be activated). Long press (more than 2 seconds) – the hold speed will be set to 60 km/h (if necessary, the CC will be activated) Set – In case of inactive CC, the current speed will be set as the holding speed and the CC will be activated A – short press holding speed 70 km/h; long press (more than 2 sec) hold speed 60 km/h. CC will be activated B – short press holding speed 80 km/h; long press (more than 2 sec) hold speed 90 km/h. QC will be activated

The LED indicates the CC operating mode. Red light – the brake/clutch pedal is pressed.

Green – CC is active.

The QC block (for firmware versions starting from January 2018) has the ability to adjust basic settings.

  1. To enter the settings editing mode, press and hold CANCEL for at least 7 seconds. Once released, the LED will flash green/red alternately.
  2. To exit the editing mode, you can press the brake, or CANCEL with a short press.
  3. To reset the settings to factory settings in the settings editing mode, press and hold CANCEL again for at least 7 seconds. The settings will be reset to default settings.
  4. To set the speed for the buttons and joystick in the settings editing mode, you need to briefly (0.5 sec) or long (2 sec) press the corresponding button (A, B) / joystick (On/Off). The current speed of the car will be recorded in the non-volatile memory of the CC.
  5. To change the Up/Down speed increment in the settings editing mode, you need to briefly (0.5 sec) press the corresponding control (button or joystick - it doesn’t matter). The default increment is 2km/h. Will be edited in increments of 1 ranging from 1 to 5 km/h.
  6. To change the nature of the CC operation in the settings editing mode, you need to press Up/Down for a long time (2 seconds). There will be switching between three presets [Soft

The KK unit is connected to the car wiring using 6 wires (or 8 if a joystick is used):

  • Power (two wires)
  • Gas pedal (two wires)
  • Speed wire from dashboard
  • Wire from brake/clutch pedal
  • Joystick, two wires (optional)

The car is new Toyota Corolla 2013. Comfort equipment, manual transmission. I ordered parts for installing the CC on Exist with the numbers:

84632-34011- Switch

84633-48020 - connecting wire.
45186-02210-С0 (black color) – plug for the steering wheel under the cruise control lever (thanks to user davydkov)
It has been verified that on the classic and classic plus trim levels, on the CVT and on the manual, the cruise works, but the lights (indication) on the dashboard do not light up . It was determined that with the 1.33 engine the cruise also works, but the lights (indication) on the dashboard do not light up.

It has been verified that on the comfort, elegance and prestige trim levels everything works and all the lights are on.

Stub Original and purchased

I ordered at my own peril and risk, since no one has yet installed CC on a new Corolla, a pioneer, so to speak. We remove the plug. This is how I removed the cushion from the steering wheel: Picture from those documents: Photo of the cushion from the back side: Photo of the cushion from the side: Pressed with a flat screwdriver through technological holes on the steering wheel (3 pieces).

Nothing broke, but before pressing, I studied for a long time where to press.

My sequence was as follows: first I clicked the bottom part (it turned out to be the easiest), then the right one (since you can see where to press through the window for CC), I just pressed like that - it didn’t work, I had to first click on the signal (I turned it off) and at the same time Use a screwdriver to press on the spring (shown with an arrow above).
Then do the same for the second side.

And we remove the pillow and place it carefully on top, I didn’t turn it off. I also did not remove the terminals from the battery.

Place for installing the KKK We put the KKK Still in the package We connect the wire and fasten it with screws and washers, I found them in the garage M5 for 10-12 mm We turn on the ignition and check the KK, the treasured light came on, my happiness knew no bounds We put the pillow in place - I just inserted it and clicked it neatly. A couple more photos
It took 15 minutes to do everything. Testing driving on the highway with CC proved its performance. All QC functions work as expected.

PS Please describe installation on other configurations to supplement the report.

I look there and nothing lights up. Now I’ll go call. By the way, on the new Auris the wire was connected to a different contact.

Maybe I don't have this contact in the spiral wire? I have the classic package.

Strange. I didn't connect or connect anything else. I just plugged it in and everything worked. Well, you need to ring the spiral one, then everything will definitely be clear.

Although if there is a connector for CC in a spiral, there should probably be wires for it too.

Simply check whether there is a wire or not, to do this you need to bridge two of the four contacts, the two bottom ones. When you remove the pillow, the signal will see four contacts exactly where the wire you bought is inserted.

This must be done with the engine running, but carefully hold the airbag in your hand and do not separate its parts. Most likely you have a ground wire, but you don’t have a control wire and you’ll have to pull it under the hood. There’s nothing scary there.

Yes, that’s right, the mass-produced brown one is what you most likely have, but you don’t have the blue one, so you’ll have to pull it to the ECU connector under the hood.

The whole problem is to select suitable pins for the connectors, some use them from computer connectors, others take pins from unused connectors that are under the panel.

From the report from Auris at the link above, I realized that there was an additional missing wire that we have and it is blue.
Now I’ll go and look under the hood to see if it’s on pin 60 in connector A50. Bridging the connection with at least something? As I understand it, there must be a certain signal.

Installing cruise control. Like everyone else, but not quite - logbook of the 2008 Toyota Corolla on DRIVE2

Good day, dear friends!

For a long time, I have been watching posts about how easy it is to install cruise control without having to pay a lot of money for original spare parts. But there was no particular need for it, so I passed everything by.

But some time ago, after another entry appeared, I decided that it was time to get one for myself, after all, sometimes I have long trips, and after 300-400 kilometers, discomfort begins to be felt in my ankle, even with a break.

This argument alone, even if it does not appear so often, was still enough, and it was decided that it was worth it.

And it’s summer now, there are more trips on the highway, and the total price is less than 2 thousand for spare parts from their Chinese comrades - that’s no more than 10 for the original, which I would pay only if I drive on the highway all the time, but here I don’t mind. Well, now all that was left was to order everything you needed.

I have a mechanical box, which means the first thing I need is a spiral wire (art. 84306-12110), I ordered it here. Came quickly enough, thanks to Moscow nearby. All pins are straight, did not cause any problems during installation:

Next you need a cruise control lever (art. 84632-34011), I ordered it here. Came just as quickly. Many will notice that this is not the lever that usually pops up in Drive entries, and they will be right. There are no screws in the kit and it is more expensive at first glance, but in the end it came out at a reasonable price with a big discount from the mobile app, I liked the quality of the plastic:

Since the lever is without screws, you need two screws (art. 90159-50199), there was time to wait, so I ordered from the Emirates, their price is often the most reasonable.

And the last one left is the plastic plug for pre-restyling (art. 45186-12010-B0), I also ordered it original from the Emirates for the reason described above.

And now that the spiral and lever with screws have arrived, you can go install. Everything here is simple and like everyone else. Turn off the ignition, remove the side plugs on the steering wheel and unscrew the hexagons:

Next, we disconnect the airbag and signal cables, unscrew the steering wheel, and gently pull it several times, being prepared for something that might fly off abruptly. I didn't put any marks, I just returned it back in an even position. Since I removed it twice, the second time I didn’t get the position of the wheels right and rearranged it:

Afterwards, we remove the plastic covers from the steering column, wipe them, otherwise there is a fair amount of dust, remove the old spiral, which is held on by 3 latches, and install a new one:

We remove the plastic ring on the spiral, return the covers, install the steering wheel, then screw the cruise control lever onto new bolts:

We connect the lever, return the signal cables and pillows, and tighten the pillow. Start the engine, turn on the cruise control, the treasured inscription on the tidy says that everything is in order. Sorry for the quality, it was not early, I still couldn’t get the angle:

A few days later the plug arrived and everything fell into place:

And now the cruise itself is working, everything is fine, what else is needed, huh?

Here's what: I have repeatedly come across reviews about a crackling sound when turning the steering wheel after installing Chinese spirals. There aren’t many of them in the reviews on Ali, but I saw them on Drive. Actually, I wouldn’t have noticed this whole thing, but it just so happens that I often drive in silence, and at these moments extraneous sounds actually appeared when the steering wheel moved.

Not loud, but noticeable enough to begin to get on my nerves. Actually, I twirled the old spiral in my hands, there, of course, you can hear the sound of rubbing plastic, but it is not loud.

And then the thought began to come that for the money I paid for the spiral coil, I should have come to terms with the fact that it would not be ideal, but no, and anyway, I’m my mother’s engineer, I need to at least look and try to figure it out.

Looking at the spiral, you can see that it is all held on by latches, which means it must be disassembled. As a result, it was decided to experiment with a Chinese copy, which was removed.

Not that he figured it out right away, but he figured it out. I needed a thin screwdriver and a pair of nail scissors: I used a screwdriver to bend the current latches, and used scissors to fix them in a bent form.

With 3 of the 4 rivets on the inner wheel snapped off, the entire structure was removed:

It turned out that the wheels that wind the wire inside were spinning rather noisily on the Chinese spiral.

Since they were completely free, the assumption was made that, due to Chinese copying, everything should be the same on the original one, which means that the original wheels can be removed and rearranged.

The actual copying is very close and it turned out that only minor nuances differ. The original is removed according to the same principle:

Then the ring that secured the wheels inside the mechanism was removed; here it was already possible to get by with one screwdriver when removing the latches:

And here is the original mechanism with wheels:

Actually, initially I just wanted to replace it and the ring that fits on the tip of the steering mechanism, but it turned out that the connector with wires can be easily removed from the bottom platform, which means you can take it away:

The connector is also removed on the top platform:

But due to the fact that there is no space at the top for the cruise control plug, you will have to leave the Chinese platform. As a result, we take from the Chinese:

Next, we will attach the Chinese part to the original one. The ring that holds the wheels is also from the original one:

Read also:  How to choose a radar detector

You need to bend the wire well before installing the ring, otherwise one of the two will bend, as can be seen in my case:

Well, now the wire is fine:

The result was a hybrid of the original and Chinese spirals:

After installation, as I mentioned above, the steering wheel was crooked and had to be rearranged, I also forgot to snap the rivet on the airbag plug and caught a mistake, but all these little things were quickly eliminated and the cruise began to work as normal. As for the sounds when turning the steering wheel, the usual sound of rubbing plastic returned, which means it was not in vain that it was disassembled.

Installing cruise control Toyota Corolla e180

Our Corolla can be equipped with a cruise control function in any configuration with any engine, with a manual transmission and a CVT.

The function will work, the only display on the dashboard will be available starting with the Style+ package. Or in other words, on a dashboard with three wells, the rings of which are framed in chrome, there will be an indication. If there is no chrome, then there will be no cruise indicators either, as in my case.

To use these lamps, you need to solder in several diodes and several drivers; more information can be found on the Corolla forum.

What do you need to buy to install the cruise?

The switch itself with buttons for switching cruise functions, a wire to it, two mounting bolts and a cover. Let's look at these details in more detail.

Original switch number: 84632-34011

The wire 84633-48020

Bolts 9015950199

Cover 45186-02210-С0

In my opinion, you can buy a switch on Aliexpress - four times cheaper. With this switch everything will work the same as with the original one. You can find the entire set here, except for the lid: http://ali.pub/2bfrh6

You can pick up the lid here: http://ali.pub/249zn5

Another option is to purchase the entire set inexpensively with a cover here: https://www.toyot.net/product-page/toyota-corolla-160-2013-2015. Sending by Russian Post.

Installation

To begin installing the cruise, you must remove the airbag from the steering wheel. There are three technological holes for this. Before this, you need to remove the negative mark from the battery, since when removing the SRS, you will have to press the signal more than once.

We insert, for example, a Phillips screwdriver into the holes, I was able to select a screwdriver that almost closely fit the diameter of the holes, thanks to which I was able to easily press the bracket, thanks to the guides in the holes, the screwdriver entered at the desired angle.

The photo below shows what you need to press with a screwdriver. There are two metal brackets on top and a plastic latch on the bottom, which is usually the easiest to unfasten.

We unfastened the SRS airbag, put it aside, there is enough wire for this.

We put the switch in its place and fix it with two bolts. We connect the cable from above to under the steering unit into a free socket, as shown in the photo:

Next, snap the pillow into place.

We put the lid on. I couldn’t find the cover 45186-02210-C0 in stock in our well-known online stores, so I went out myself and cut a hole in the original cover.

That's all, cruise control should work.

How to enjoy a cruise on the Corolla!

We pick up speed of at least 45 km/h

Press the ON button at the end of the switch, thereby activating the cruise.

And lower the lever down, the speed should be fixed.

to increase the speed, lift the lever up, each press adds 2 km/h. To lower, the lever must be pressed down.

To reset the speed hold, you must press the cruise switch CANCEL or press the brake pedal.

How to install cruise control on a Toyota Corolla

Later, a more modern ACC system appeared - adaptive cruise control.

INSTALLING CRUISE CONTROL TOYOTA COROLLA E12 restyling

We put marks on the steering wheel and steering shaft to align them after removing and installing the steering wheel. The steering wheel can now be removed.

We insert, for example, a Phillips screwdriver into the holes, I was able to select a screwdriver that almost closely fit the diameter of the holes, thanks to which I was able to easily press the bracket, thanks to the guides in the holes, the screwdriver entered at the desired angle.

We put the switch in its place and fix it with two bolts. The first thing you need to do is buy a steering column switch, which will be responsible for turning the option on and off, as well as a wire to it. Next, we need to screw the steering wheel into place, and do not forget the marks made earlier, they must clearly coincide with each other.

Like everyone else, but not quite aka-PM was 57 minutes ago Pavel, 25 years old Smolensk, Russia Good day, dear friends! For a long time, I have been watching posts about how easy it is to install cruise control without having to pay a lot of money for original spare parts.

History of the creation of the cruise control system

But there was no particular need for it, so I passed everything by. When assembling, do not crush the wires with the mounting screws!

Next, we already know how to remove the pillow, screw on the buttons, lay out the wires and connect the connector to the twisted cable. Now the most important part of the work is cutting off the ears near the pillow.

I didn’t dare to do it myself, I gave it to professionals at work. In the picture, the latches are indicated by red arrows. Next, instead of the removed twisted cable, we install a new one that will fit our cruise control.

We put it in place and carefully snap it into place. It is advisable to connect all the wires before installation, but if it is more convenient for you to connect them after, then that’s okay.

After installing the twisted cable, we put on the lower casing and carefully break the safety stopper, which protects the cable during transportation and prevents it from being pulled out. However, you should not twist it before installing the steering wheel, since the connector should remain on top. Everything is clearly visible in the photo.

The safety stop can be broken by turning either to the right or to the left, the side does not matter here. Conversely, if the engine load increases during a climb, cruise control increases fuel delivery.

Passive and adaptive cruise control: Classic cruise control, also called passive, is designed to maintain the speed of the car at a constant level.

In the photo, the nut is indicated by a red arrow. After unscrewing the nut, remove the steering wheel.

We also put it aside, maybe somewhere with the previously removed pillow. A photo without the steering wheel is shown below.

After the steering wheel is removed, we begin to remove the lower part of the casing, after which we disconnect all the wires and remove the twisted cable from the three standard latches. It’s not difficult to do all this, so let’s get started.

In the picture, the latches are indicated by red arrows. Next, instead of the removed twisted cable, we install a new one that will fit our cruise control. We put it in place and carefully snap it into place. Its essence is that the speed of the car is maintained automatically. In this case, the driver may not press the gas pedal.

The option records the speed developed at the time of activation and limits it to a given limit until it is turned off.

On descents the system reduces the speed, and on ascents it increases. By default, this system is supplied to Toyota Corolla only in the Prestige configuration and higher. Naturally, its cost is significantly higher than the price of a standard Comfort, and not everyone can buy such a car.

For example, regarding the Corolla, the difference in the price of these configurations can reach thousands of rubles, which quite logically becomes an obstacle to purchasing a more expensive model. However, you can equip your car with the cruise control option on your own.

Cruise control allows you to drive the car at a desired speed above 40 km/h (km/h) even without pressing the accelerator pedal.

Travel speed can be maintained on uphill and downhill grades within the engine's capabilities, although slight changes in speed may occur when traveling up or down an incline. On steeper slopes there will be a greater change in speed, so it is better to drive without cruise control.

WARNING

• To maintain maximum vehicle control, do not use cruise control in heavy or fluctuating traffic, or when driving on slippery (wet, ice or snow) or winding roads.

• Avoid increasing vehicle speed when driving downhill. If the vehicle speed is too high relative to the cruise control set speed, cancel cruise control, then shift to a lower gear to use engine braking to reduce speed.

TURNING ON THE SYSTEM

To control the cruise control, press the “ON-OFF” switch. This turns on the system. An indicator light on the instrument panel indicates that you can now set your desired driving speed. Pressing the switch again will turn off the system completely.

WARNING

To avoid accidental operation of the cruise control, keep the “ON-OFF” switch turned off when you are not using the cruise control.

SETTING TO THE DESIRED SPEED

On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the transmission must be in “D” before setting the cruise control speed.

Reach the desired speed, push the lever down in the “SET” direction and release it. This sets the speed of the car. If the speed is not satisfactory, press the lever up slightly to increase the speed, or press the lever down slightly to decrease the speed. Each press changes the set speed by 1.6 km/h (km/h). You can now take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

When you need acceleration - for example to overtake - press the accelerator pedal so that the vehicle speed exceeds the set speed. When you release the accelerator pedal, the vehicle will return to the pre-acceleration speed.

WARNING

For manual transmission:

When driving with cruise control on, do not shift to neutral without pressing the clutch pedal, as this may cause the engine to overboost or rev.

CANCELING A PRESET SPEED

You can cancel the preset speed:

a. Press the lever in the direction of “CANCEL” and release it.

b. Pressing the brake pedal.

c. Pressing the clutch pedal (manual transmission).

d. By pressing the “ON-OFF” switch.

If the vehicle speed drops below approximately 40 km/h (40 km/h), the preset speed is automatically canceled.

If the vehicle speed drops 16 km/h (km/h) below the preset speed, the preset speed is also automatically cancelled.

If the preset speed is automatically canceled for reasons other than those stated above, have your vehicle checked at the earliest opportunity by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer or other properly qualified and equipped professional.

RESETTING TO A HIGHER SPEED

Push the lever upward in the direction of “+ RES” and hold it. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached. By holding the lever in the upper position, the car gradually picks up speed.

However, a quicker way to reset is to accelerate the vehicle, and then push the lever down in the “- SET” direction.

RESET TO LOWER SPEED

Push the lever down in the direction of “- SET” and hold it. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached. By holding the lever in the down position, the car gradually reduces speed.

However, a quicker way to reset is to depress the brake pedal, and then push the lever down in the “- SET” direction.

On vehicles with an automatic transmission, engine braking will not be possible even if you disengage the overdrive gear while the cruise control is on, since the cruise control is not cancelled.

To reduce vehicle speed, reset to a lower speed using the cruise control lever or press the brake pedal. If you use the brake pedal, cruise control is canceled.

RESUMING PRESET SPEED

When canceling the preset speed using the control lever or pressing the brake pedal or clutch pedal, pushing the lever up in the “+ RES” direction will restore the speed set before cancellation.

However, if the vehicle speed drops below approximately 40 km/h (40 km/h), the preset speed is not restored.

CRUISE CONTROL MALFUNCTION WARNING

If the “CRUISE” indicator light on the instrument panel flashes while using cruise control, press the “ON-OFF” switch to turn the system off, and then press it again to turn it on.

If any of the following situations then occur, there is a problem with the cruise control system.

• The indicator light does not light up.

• The indicator light flashes again.

• The indicator light goes out immediately after switching on.

If this occurs, have your vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer or other suitably qualified and equipped professional.
