Decoding the categories of new tractor licenses
A driver's license is an incredibly important document needed by almost every person. Thanks to him, it becomes possible to move around the territory not by bus, metro or trolleybus, but by your own vehicle.
Not so long ago, the categories of rights were improved, but among them there is no one that would apply to a tractor, self-propelled vehicle or other similar “all-terrain vehicle”. Fortunately, there is another similar document. Once you receive it, you can safely drive the most popular vehicle in agriculture.
What do tractor licenses mean?
In appearance, a driver's license that covers the ability to drive a tractor does not differ from those required by the owner of a car or truck.
Thanks to this document, you can manage two categories of transport:
- First of all, these are different types of self-propelled vehicles that have certain properties. For example, a tractor, snow removal, construction or agricultural machinery. In a word, everything that can make human work easier;
- The second type is a category that allows you to control military equipment.
Such a certificate is issued to a person by the traffic police, its validity is ten years.
Categories of driver's licenses for tractors and special equipment
Any driver's license is divided into several main categories.
Category Ah
Issued to drivers of the most minimal vehicles, the power of which does not exceed 4 kW. They can travel both on general roads and along complex or specialized routes. For example, this category includes ATVs, warehouse equipment or snowmobiles.
Categories B, C, D, E, F
They differ from each other only in the amount of horsepower that a certain vehicle can contain:
- Category “B” applies to equipment with a power of up to 34 horsepower. Various mechanisms moving on tracks fall under it.
- Next comes category “C”. Its owners can drive a vehicle with power from 34 to 150 hp. This list includes a fairly extensive list: a tractor without a trailer, walk-behind tractors, dump trucks and many other mechanisms on wheels.
- Category “D” gives you the opportunity to drive the most powerful vehicles, containing more than 150 horsepower.
- The last two categories differ from each other only in the type of mechanism responsible for the movement of vehicles. Category “E” applies to tracked vehicles, and category “F” to agricultural vehicles.
As it turned out, all of the above categories have no overlap with each other. That is, you can only drive one vehicle. Therefore, before receiving a certificate, you should carefully think about what kind of mechanism you will own.
Why do you need a tractor license?
Above, it has already been said what tractor licenses are and what categories they are classified into. Separately, it is worth raising the question of what they are needed for?
It is worth noting that approximately fifty years ago absolutely any person, including a woman, a teenager and a pensioner, could operate such equipment, and he did not need absolutely any rights.
However, in those days, the tractor was used for the sole purpose of helping to improve a plot of land in a fairly quick time.
Now, this document is necessary for the following reasons:
- The vehicle has become more modern. Now, learning to operate it on your own is not so easy. You will need to complete a full course of study;
- A tractor can often be seen on the highway together with other cars; the driver must drive it strictly according to the rules in order to reduce the risk of road accidents;
- Many mechanisms have an electronic control mechanism, which can only be mastered by an experienced specialist.
Currently, a person does not have the right to sit in the driver's seat of a tractor if he does not have the appropriate document. Even when he needs to do certain work in his garden. If these rules are violated, he will be fined heavily.
The difference between the rights of a motorist and a tractor driver
As mentioned earlier, the rights of a tractor driver and a motorist are very similar. Both of these documents are presented in the form of a plastic card with a photograph, signature and personal information of the owner.
However, several differences can be identified:
- They are issued by various authorities;
- The color shade of the card may differ;
- There are various subcategories on a driver's license; a tractor driver's license is classified into separate categories.
Of course, the main difference is what kind of vehicle the owner of this document has the right to drive.
How to get a tractor license?
The entire cycle of obtaining a driver's license can be divided into several main categories.
Take a training course
To do this, you should contact a certain authority, namely, Gostekhnadzor or the Ministry of Education.
The future candidate must provide several of his personal documents, namely:
- medical certificate of health;
- passport;
- driver's license, if you previously had one.
Next, the future driver must attend theoretical classes for a month and a half, which will help him learn all the nuances of operating such equipment.
After successfully mastering the basics, you will need to pass many practical tests to consolidate your knowledge in practice, all of them are based on the rules of the road.
Pass the exam
The future driver will have to take the exam several times:
- The very first test is the theoretical part. You will need to show your knowledge to the traffic police inspector, either verbally or electronically (in the form of a test).
- Only after this can the prospective applicant proceed to the practical exam. The second stage is as close to reality as possible. That is, classes are carried out in uneven areas.
- After completing all exams, a government agency employee will decide whether or not the student is allowed to operate large equipment.
Basic requirements for obtaining a tractor driver's license
It’s worth talking separately about what basic requirements are imposed on each person who would like to obtain a driver’s license to drive transport:
- The required age is perhaps the most basic requirement. This limit has several classifications, which directly depends on what kind of vehicle a person would like to drive. The minimum requirement is 16 years old; it is at this age that a person can obtain a driver’s license to operate machinery of category “A”. With a difference of exactly one year, you can get access to manage other funds belonging to other categories. At the age of 22 you can get a license for category “A4”;
- The second important indicator is the absence of any medical indications;
- Also, a person should not be registered with a narcologist , an alcohol addiction center or a psychological clinic.
Of course, the most basic requirement is a person’s sincere desire to obtain the long-awaited driver’s license.
Documents for obtaining a tractor license
Earlier, it was already said that in order to enroll in tractor ownership training courses you will need several personal documents. In addition to these, a number of other documents may also be required. For example, if a person has vision problems, he must present a separate certificate from an ophthalmologist.
The commission will already make a decision based on this indicator on whether a person will be able to fully drive a vehicle. The photo should show him wearing glasses.
If a person has previously undergone such training, then he should be shown a photocopy of the certificate of this. A person who does not have Russian citizenship must make temporary registration without fail.
Where can I change my license for a tractor?
You can change your expired tractor license at the same authorities where you receive it. To do this, you do not need to take additional exams, you just need to fill out applications. The owner's old rights will be eliminated.
A separate certificate covering the ability to drive a tractor appeared quite recently.
Fortunately, now there are a lot of similar institutions where you can learn how to use such complex equipment. To do this, you will only need a minimum list of documents. Tractor license - decoding categories and how to get it? Link to main publication

Categories of tractor driver's license - driver's license, A2, and special equipment, new model, driver's license
A few years ago, a new type of driver's license was introduced in Russia. These are documents in a modern format. The number of categories and subcategories has been increased here.
But none of them allows you to drive a tractor or any other vehicles called self-propelled.
Important aspects
The self-propelled category includes equipment that has certain parameters:
ICE (internal combustion engine) | With a volume exceeding 50 cubic meters. cm |
ED (electric motor) | Having a power of more than 4 kW |
Documents that allow you to drive self-propelled equipment are called “tractor driver’s licenses.”
They mean:
Categories | Six |
Subcategories | Four |
Categories and subcategories are designated by Latin letters (numbers). Indicated in new certificates with permanent and temporary validity.
The acquired tractor license, unlike a regular driver's license, does not allow you to drive self-propelled equipment outside our country.
What it is
Despite the external similarity with a regular driver’s license, a tractor driver’s license nevertheless opens up completely different opportunities for the right to operate equipment.
After all, a truck driver who has a cat. “C” cannot operate a backhoe loader, and similarly, a driver driving a utility vehicle cannot drive a passenger car.
These are two separate areas of transport management, supervised by different departments, having their own terminology, training programs, special equipment and various documents (rights):
Self-propelled vehicles (SM) | Tractors, other equipment used in road construction and ground-based trackless mechanical vehicles with appropriate engine parameters. The exception is the military ST, which performs combat missions to increase state defense capability |
Tractor driver's license | A document confirming the right of a citizen to drive one of the types of self-propelled vehicles. It is issued for a period of 10 years |
Categories (subcategories) | Delimitation of the right of a tractor driver to drive a certain group of vehicles |
For what purpose is it provided?
During the Great Patriotic War, boys who were 12-14 years old worked on tractors in the fields without any rights.
Yes, this was necessary for the victory of our country. Operating technology back then was not as difficult as it is now.
Now self-propelled vehicles (ST) have been brought to almost perfection, becoming a means of transportation equipped with the most complex operating functionality, electronics and computers.
And its diversity already allows division into categories and even subcategories. To operate such equipment, you must obtain documents certifying:
Medical examination of fitness to operate a vehicle of a specific category | Subcategories |
Taking a special course | Theoretical and practical training; |
Passing qualifying exams | — |
Obtaining permission to drive | For one or more categories (subcategories) of self-propelled vehicles |
When admitted to training and passing qualifying exams in some of the categories (subcategories), there are age restrictions.
Legal basis
The right to drive vehicles, tractors, and obtaining the corresponding rights of a tractor driver are regulated by several regulations:
Categories of driver's licenses for tractors and special equipment
In the recent past, tractor drivers’ licenses included categories A, B, C, D, D, but now they are A, B, C, D, E, F, as well as A1, A2, A3, A4.
These are agricultural machinery (SHT) and self-propelled vehicles (SM) with certain power indicators (from 27.5 to 110 kW or more).
Detailed transcript
Let's look at all existing categories (subcategories) with explanations:
Category "A" | Automobiles and motorcycles not intended for driving on ordinary roads or capable of reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h |
Subcategory A1 | Off-road motor vehicles. This subcategory includes: all-terrain vehicles (snowmobiles, swamp vehicles, snow and swamp vehicles) |
Subcategory A2 | Off-road vehicles with a permissible maximum weight of up to 3.5 tons and the number of seats (including driver) no more than 8. This subcategory includes all-terrain vehicles |
Subcategory A3 | Off-road vehicles with a permissible maximum weight exceeding 3.5 tons. This category includes special purpose all-terrain vehicles, mining dump trucks |
Subcategory A4 | Off-road vehicles intended for passenger transportation, having more than 8 (including the driver) seats. Platform and rotational buses fit this category |
Category "B" | Tracked and wheeled vehicles with an engine power of less than 27.5 kW. This category includes mini-excavator tractors, municipal cleaning machines |
Category "C" | Wheeled SMs with engines with power from 27.5 to 110.3 kW. This category includes tractors, backhoe loaders |
Category "D" | Wheeled vehicles with engines with a power of more than 110.3 kW - pneumatic wheel cranes, tractors |
Category "E" | Tracked vehicles with engines over 27.5 kW: bulldozers, excavators |
Category "F" | Self-propelled agricultural machinery: grain harvesting equipment, etc. |
Clarification - having a tractor driver's license of category A2 does not give its holder the right to drive a vehicle of category A4 and vice versa.
How to find out which one you need
To obtain a tractor driver's license, you must complete the appropriate training course for a specific category (subcategory).
This is determined by the type of equipment owned by the enterprise. You should know that in addition to the category (subcategory), the tractor driver’s license also indicates a rank.
The bit depth is determined by the Gostekhnadzor inspector who takes the exams. Let's look at how ranks are assigned:
2 | For those who have the right to drive a vehicle under the supervision of an experienced mentor, repair loading and self-gripping mechanisms and devices |
3 | For those who have the right to operate a battery-powered forklift, other self-gripping mechanisms, load, stack cargo, repair and maintain tractor mechanisms |
4 | For drivers who have received permission to operate forklifts with a power of less than 100 hp. pp., and on other mechanisms that are used for transferring and storing goods |
5 | For tractor drivers who have received the right to drive a tractor with a power of over 100 hp. With. or less if it is used as a scraper, excavator, bulldozer |
6 | For drivers who have the right to drive tractors with a power of 200 hp. With. in cases of their bulldozer or excavator use |
Tips for studying and passing exams
To receive training services and pass qualifying exams, the candidate submits an application to the territorial body of Gostekhnadzor with the following attachment:
- passports;
- medical certificates;
- document on completed training;
- tractor license (if issued previously);
- driver's license (if you have one);
- photographs on matte paper (3x4).
Admission, training and conducting certification exams that grant the right to manage a private vehicle are carried out by specialized and accredited training centers and schools located in the regions where students live.
Tractor licenses cannot be obtained in another, even neighboring region. Depending on the category, most training courses last about one and a half months.
The training programs of schools and centers are approved by the Ministry of Education and the State Technical Supervision Authority. Training courses involve theoretical and practical stages.
The theoretical stage involves studying the design of the ST, the rules for working with various loads.
The practical stage of training is carried out at training grounds and involves training in driving, maneuvering vehicles and handling loads in real conditions (on dirt and asphalt surfaces).
Certification exams are also carried out in stages. First, theoretical - on the computer or orally.
Successful completion of the theoretical stage is admission to the practical exam.
A practical exam allows the examiner to determine the student’s ability to operate a vehicle in different conditions - created stationary (at a training ground or tractor track) and at a real object.
The examiner is a Gostekhnadzor inspector who has the right to make a decision:
- “Admitted to managing the SM”;
- “Not allowed to manage the SM.”
In cases where a cadet does not pass one of the stages of the exam, at least a week later he is given the right to take it again.
Video: we pass practice for tractor driver licenses of categories B, C, D, E, F
A total of three attempts are given. If the third one fails, the student is sent back to training.
Separately, it is worth noting that persons of a certain age have the right to take exams allowing to manage a SM:
On SM category. "A1" | From 16 years old |
On SM category. B, C, E, F | From 17 years old |
On SM category. D | From 18 years old |
On SM category. A2, A3 | From 19 years old |
On SM category. A4 | From 22 years old |
We also note that after the withdrawal of a tractor driver’s license, their issuance is possible only after passing a theoretical exam.
But only after half the period of deprivation of a tractor license has expired, not earlier.
Example of a new sample
Gostekhnadzor has regulated a uniform form for tractor driver license forms for all regions of the Russian Federation.
The basis for issuing a tractor driver's license is a document indicating completion of a special course of theoretical and practical training.
The new form is a card filled out on both sides. On one side are the owner's details, his photograph, signature. On the other side is information about the equipment he is allowed to operate.
A tractor driver's license may differ from a regular international driver's license only in the name of the categories and the color of the card itself.
The “Special Notes” section is filled with additional information about restrictions and permissions, information marks:
- about driving with glasses;
- blood group;
- about driving experience;
- by category.
An example of filling out a new type of tractor operator’s (tractor driver’s) license with the entry “Loader Driver”, and in the “Special Notes” column of categories “C” and “B”, see Appendix 1.
Tractor drivers are perhaps one of the most sought-after vacancies in developing cities.
Where construction is going on, where companies purchase the latest road construction equipment, people who know how modern equipment works are always needed.
At the same time, they must have a tractor driver’s license.

Everything about tractor license categories
Synchronizing its own legislation with global law, several years ago Russia introduced a large number of categories to the driver’s license. The main changes were the introduction of additional subcategories that differentiate vehicles differently.
New concepts of some vehicles have appeared that now correspond to reality. There have also been changes regarding how to obtain a tractor driver's license.
Self-propelled vehicle
Tractors, which are used in various fields of industry, according to traffic regulations are classified as types of self-propelled machines. The new edition of the rules attempted to expand and clarify this concept. Now these include trackless vehicles equipped with either a fuel engine with a volume exceeding 50 cm3, or an electric motor from 4 kW with minor exceptions such as military equipment.
The updated text indicates all equipment that can be driven with a tractor license. In addition to the classic tractor, this description includes various types of loaders, excavators, snowmobiles and similar special equipment .
Who has the right to operate such devices?
In order to be allowed to drive such machines, you must have documented permission. There are two types of documents:
- permanently valid tractor driver's license;
- temporary certificate.
In the earlier version there was also a temporary permit, but from November 28, 2015, such a clause was removed from the traffic rules. Now a temporary permit is not issued, but the license is not taken away.
After a positive decision on deprivation of rights by the court, their owner is obliged to hand them over to the state technical supervision authorities.
At the same time, there is a clear instruction according to which it is prohibited to drive a tractor, excavator or other similar equipment without one of these documents.
New subcategories
There are six categories and four subcategories that delimit tractor categories of rights.
In category “A”, vehicles are either not intended for driving on roads or are structurally limited to 50 km/h. It also has subcategories.
In points “B”, “C”, “D”, “E” the main difference in power is up to 25.7 kW in “B” and up to more than 110.3 kW in “D”. Category “F” is defined for agricultural machinery.
In the section indicating special marks, when issuing a certificate, information of a permissive or restrictive nature may be indicated. It is also allowed to enter information notes regarding, for example, driving with glasses, blood type, any restrictions on categories, and overall driving experience.

Categories of tractor licenses with explanation
Operating a tractor, as a representative of a group of self-propelled machines, requires special skills and obtaining the appropriate certificate. It should be understood that tractor rights have several categories. Depending on these, both the age of admission to driving and the specific type of vehicle that a citizen gains access to driving varies.
Types of tractors and their purpose
The tractor belongs to the group of self-propelled vehicles, including machines intended for the following activities:
- agricultural work is the main purpose of this group;
- industrial;
- earthmoving;
- road construction and others.
In other words, the group includes various types of excavators, loaders, snowplows, bulldozers, snowmobiles and other special equipment.
In turn, tractors are divided into the following types:
- tracked vehicles used for agricultural activities;
- wheeled, used for work within the city, in particular on asphalt roads.
These types of self-propelled machines are united by one feature - the ability to drive only with a valid tractor driver's license.
Categories of tractor licenses
Categories of rights are intended to differentiate the driver’s capabilities in the field of operating special equipment.
The list of types of tractor licenses primarily includes category “A”. This includes motor vehicles that are not intended for travel on public roads or have a maximum speed of no more than 50 km/h.
Category "A" is divided into the following subtypes:
- A1 (I) – motorized off-road vehicles. For example, swamp vehicles, snow and swamp vehicles and others.
- A2 (II) – off-road vehicles with a permissible cargo weight of less than 3.5 tons and a total of no more than 8 seats, not counting the driver’s seat. All-terrain vehicles fall under this category.
- A3 (III) - SUVs with a maximum permitted cargo weight of more than 3.5 tons. For example, mining dump trucks and other special purpose all-terrain vehicles.
- A4 (IV) – SUVs designed for the transportation of citizens and with more than 8 seats for passengers, not including the driver’s seat. This includes shift or platform buses.
Other categories of rights in this group:
- “B” - specialized wheeled units and tracked special vehicles, where the engine power does not exceed 25.7 kW;
- “C” - wheeled special vehicles, the engine power of which varies from 27.5 to 110.3 kW;
- “D” - wheeled self-propelled special transport with a power above 110.3 kW;
- “E” - tracked special equipment, where the engine has a power above 25.7 kW;
- "F" - special vehicles for agricultural activities.
It is important to clarify that possessing a driver’s license of one type does not give a person the opportunity to drive a self-propelled vehicle of another category of this group and vice versa.
Age for obtaining a tractor license
It is possible to obtain a license to drive a self-propelled vehicle based on the following factors:
- from 16 years old – A1;
- from 17 years old – B, C, E, F;
- from 18 years old – D;
- from 19 years old – A2, A3;
- from 22 years old – A4.
Since 2015, independent training in driving self-propelled vehicles has been cancelled. Now it is possible to undergo training and pass testing only at the GosTechNadzor department.
Video about passing the tractor license exam
Categories of tractor rights imply differentiation of opportunities for driving self-propelled machines. In other words, a driver who has a license of one category does not have access to control other types of equipment. In addition, the age of training and passing the license exam also depends on the type of vehicle.

Tractor licenses - who needs them and what categories of vehicles are they issued for?
Hi all!
Obtaining a tractor license of any category may be necessary not only for work activities, but also in everyday life, for example, if you like to drive a snowmobile or use an all-terrain vehicle for hunting. Some motorists believe that a regular driving license is enough for them to do this - however, this is fraught with large fines.
From this article you will learn what a tractor license is, where and how to get it, and how to decide on the right category. Ilya Kulik is with you, let's go!
Tractor licenses - general information
A tractor driver's license, or, as they are often called, a tractor license, is not at all a license to drive a tractor. Their purpose is much broader. Let's figure out what kind of document this is, where and how to get it.
Basic definitions
A tractor driver's license (TMP) is a document confirming permission to operate self-propelled equipment.
A self-propelled vehicle (SM) is a trackless mechanical vehicle (VV) with an engine capacity of more than 50 cm3 or an electric motor with a power of more than 4 kW, intended for ground movement, with the exception of self-propelled military equipment (clause 2 of the Government of the Russian Federation (hereinafter referred to as PP) No. 796 dated July 12, 1999). Simply put, an SM is a vehicle driven by an engine, with a maximum speed of up to 50 km/h.
Legislative and regulatory framework responsible for PTM
I will provide a list of regulatory documents in which you can find answers to questions about how to obtain permission to drive self-propelled machines, the rules for issuing a tractor driver’s license and other nuances.
Regulatory acts | Range of issues regulated by these legislative acts |
1. Government Decree (PP) No. 796 of July 12, 1999 | Defines the concepts of “self-propelled vehicles” (SM). Establishes the procedure for admission to management of the SM. Determines the rules for issuing tractor licenses by Gostekhnadzor bodies. Defines the categorization of self-propelled vehicles: what categories and subcategories exist. Establishes the grounds for admission to management of the SM. Determines marks on a tractor license. Establishes requirements for the examiner. Determines the procedure for passing exams for admission to management of the management system. |
2. Order of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Russian Federation No. 807 of November 29, 1999 | Determines the order of examinations. Establishes the procedure for admission to management of the SM. Establishes the procedure for issuing PTM. |

Categories of tractor driver's rights with explanations
Self-propelled vehicles require special skills and knowledge from the driver. The procedure for obtaining a license giving permission to drive such vehicles is significantly different from obtaining a car driver’s license. The Autoconsultation magazine figured out what category of license is needed for a tractor, as well as how and where the coveted certificate is issued.
Categories and subcategories of tractor driver rights: explanation
Modernization of self-propelled vehicles (SM) has increased their functionality and productivity.
Today, these are complex mechanisms, the effective management of which requires a wealth of knowledge and honed skills, only with which the driver is allowed to drive.
His qualifications are confirmed by the presence of rights to a tractor of the corresponding category or subcategory, which are designated by Latin letters and numbers. The required category of rights is determined by the characteristics of the managed system:
- Category A. This includes vehicles whose design features do not allow them to reach speeds exceeding 50 km/h or intended for travel outside general-purpose roads.
- Subcategory A1. Self-propelled motor vehicles with a maximum speed not exceeding 50 km/h or not intended for driving on public roads. Typical representatives of such vehicles are motor sleighs, swamp vehicles and other all-terrain vehicles.
- Subcategory A2. Off-road motor vehicles, with a number of seats up to 8 including the driver's, the maximum permitted weight of which is less than 3.5 tons. All-terrain vehicles are included in this subcategory.
- Subcategory A3. Off-road motor vehicles, the maximum permitted weight of which exceeds 3.5 tons. This subcategory includes mining dump trucks and special all-terrain vehicles. appointments.
- Subcategory A4. Off-road motor vehicles with more than 8 seats, including the driver's seat. Platform and rotation buses are typical representatives of this subcategory.
- Category B. SM, equipped with a wheeled or tracked engine with a power of less than 27.5 kW. A Category B tractor license gives the driver permission to work with municipal cleaning equipment and mini-excavators.
- Category C. SM only on wheels, equipped with motors with a power range of 27.5-110.3 kW. After receiving the certificate, a tractor driver with a category C license gets the opportunity to work on tractors and backhoe loaders.
- Category D. SM only on wheels, equipped with engines with a power exceeding 110.3 kW. This includes pneumatic wheel cranes and tractors of the specified characteristics.
- Category E. SM only on tracks, equipped with an engine whose power exceeds 27.5 kW.
- Category F. This includes self-propelled agricultural machinery (combines, grain loaders, etc.)
Special marks
This column indicates restrictions and information regarding the management of the SM. The need to use vision correction products, length of service, blood type, etc. may be indicated here.
Categories of tractor driver drivers: what is important to be able to do
Certification of tractor driver operators is carried out taking into account the category of the tractor they are to drive. In addition, during the examinations, the inspector assigns a rank corresponding to the skills of the examinee:
- 2nd category. Gives the right to independently repair loading and self-gripping mechanisms, but operating the vehicle is allowed only under the supervision of an experienced tractor driver.
- 3rd category. Gives the right to independently control load-grasping mechanisms, carry out loading operations, and service tractor mechanisms.
- 4th category. Drivers with this category have the right to independently carry out work on lifting, moving and storing cargo, provided that the vehicle is equipped with an engine with a power of less than 100 hp. With.
- 5th category. Provides access to control of self-propelled vehicles with engine power exceeding 100 hp. With. It is also required for operators of excavators, scrapers and smaller bulldozers.
- 6th category. Mandatory for driving excavator tractors, bulldozers and other equipment with a power exceeding 200 hp. With.
To be awarded a high rank, you must be well prepared to pass the examination program, which consists of a practical and theoretical part.
Conditions for issuing driving licenses for tractors by category
This document is issued not by the State Traffic Inspectorate, like a standard driver’s license, but by Gostekhnadzor. It is allowed to submit documents to the departments at the place of registration of the examinee. To carry out certification as a tractor driver, regardless of the chosen category of rights, you must provide the following to the regional unit:
- application of the established form;
- passport or duplicate identity card;
- a valid conclusion of a medical commission with permission to obtain the required category of rights to a tractor;
- a certificate of completion of training at an accredited training center or a previously issued license that has expired;
- driver's license (if available);
- 2 photos on matte photographic paper in 3X4 format, if the Gostekhnadzor department does not provide for photography;
- A receipt confirming payment of the state duty.
In addition to the general provisions, there are separate standards of admission to each category of tractor driver’s rights:
- Subcategory A1 is only available to drivers over 16 years of age.
- Subcategory A2 requires 1 year of experience in automobile category B and an age of at least 19 years.
- Subcategory A3 is issued after 1 year of driving license category C and age over 19 years.
- Subcategory A4 is available to persons over 22 years of age who have 1 year of driving experience in a category D vehicle.
- Categories B, C, E, F are available to persons over 17 years of age, even without driving experience.
- Category D is issued to persons over 18 years of age without driving experience.
Save on courses
Applicants for subcategory A1 and category B licenses are not required to undergo specialized training. Self-study is allowed followed by passing exams on a general basis.
Certification procedure: how to successfully pass the exams
After submitting a package of documents to the regional unit of the State Inspectorate for Supervision of the Technical Condition of Vehicles, a date is set for the examination, which consists of three successive stages.
Stages of the examination process
Depending on the required category, the applicant will have to go through the following stages:
- Theoretical part on the rules and regulations for the safe operation of SM for those certified for all categories, with the exception of F.
- Theoretical part on the rules and regulations for the safe operation of mechanical equipment, agricultural machinery and equipment for applicants for category F.
- Theoretical part on knowledge of traffic rules.
- Practical part with control of management skills, compliance with traffic regulations, as well as rules and safety standards during the operation of self-propelled equipment.
Theoretical stage
Candidates will have to prove their knowledge in the following areas:
- Rules for driving and aggregating tractors or other equipment, depending on which category of rights will be open.
- Legislative standards regulating the safety of life, health and the environment during the operation of SM, as well as liability provided for by law in case of non-compliance.
- Factors of accidents and injuries in the work of a tractor driver.
- Methods of providing primary medical care (stopping bleeding, immobilization, anti-shock measures).
- Traffic regulations, as well as legal liability in case of non-compliance.
In case of unsatisfactory results of the theoretical knowledge test, the exam can be taken again. A week is allotted for quality preparation, and before its expiration, a second attempt is not allowed.
You are given 3 attempts to confirm your knowledge, after which you will have to take the training again. Examinees do not have the right to proceed to the practical part before receiving a mark on passing the theory.
A positive result of the theoretical exam remains valid for the next 3 months.
Practical stage
The practical part consists of two successive stages. To begin with, the examinee demonstrates knowledge and skills in a closed area, and then on a specially planned route that simulates real operating conditions.
The following skills are tested within the tractor track:
- ability to move away on sloping terrain;
- turning maneuver in a limited area;
- parking maneuver in reverse into the hangar;
- for examinees in categories B, C, D and E – parking in reverse in the SM hangar with a trailer;
- aggregation of SM with a trailer;
- examinees for categories B, C, D and E – SM with a mounted machine;
- braking at various speeds.
At the stage along the real route, compliance with traffic rules, application of knowledge on the safe operation of self-propelled vehicles, the ability to competently assess the road situation, and the correctness and speed of reaction to it are checked.
Video workshop: how to pass the exam successfully
In the video lesson, advice is given by a person who has tested from his own experience what skills an applicant for subcategory A1 should have:
Having become the holder of a tractor driver’s license, remember that if it is revoked, you can return the document only by retaking the theoretical part of the exam. If the reason for the deprivation was driving a self-propelled vehicle while intoxicated, you will have to undergo a medical examination again.
