Why do you need an engine break-in after a major overhaul?

How to properly break in an engine after a major overhaul?

Experienced drivers know that after a major overhaul or purchase of a new car, the engine must be run in for some time.

That is, for the first few thousand kilometers, optimal driving conditions must be observed, you must not press hard on the gas or brakes, and you must not allow the engine to run for a long time at idle or at high speeds.

In this article we will try to convey to the car enthusiast as complete information as possible on how to run in an engine after a major overhaul.

Almost any engine will require major overhaul over time. Symptoms that your car’s engine requires diagnosis and repair are the following:

  • gradual increase in fuel and oil consumption;
  • exhaust of characteristic black or bluish smoke from the chimney;
  • reduction of compression in cylinders;
  • decreased traction at low or high engine speeds;
  • The engine starts to stall when changing gears.

All these problems can be eliminated in various ways. For example, you can replace the cylinder block gaskets and use various engine oil additives. But such actions are only temporary measures that correct the situation for a short time. The most correct solution in this case is a major overhaul of the engine.

The very concept of “overhaul” of an engine implies a complete diagnosis of the unit and a complete replacement of all worn out and failed parts.

Engine overhaul usually consists of the following steps:

engine dismantling - removing the engine from the car using a special lift. To do this, first disconnect all components and systems associated with the engine - gearbox, clutch and cooling system;

engine cleaning - in order to see and evaluate the actual level of defects and damage, it is necessary to completely clean all internal surfaces of carbon deposits and the remaining layer of oil. Only on a clean motor can all measurements be carried out correctly;

defect detection - mechanics assess the degree of wear of the engine, make a list of parts that need to be replaced, as well as upcoming work: boring, replacing rings, grinding, replacing connecting rods and main bearings of the crankshaft, etc.;

engine repair itself.

Of course, it is not difficult to guess that such repairs are a very expensive and painstaking pleasure, which can only be carried out by good specialists.

Well, when it comes to foreign cars, then the cost of work increases many times over. That is why we do not recommend buying foreign cars with a mileage of more than 500,000 km.

It’s better to buy a domestic car - their overhaul will cost you several times cheaper.

Running in the engine after a major overhaul.

After the specialists have completed the engine repair, you have installed it in place, replaced all the filters, connected everything necessary and started it to make sure that it is assembled correctly - that's it, your car is ready to use. But now you should know that you are dealing with a practically new engine, which needs to be run in for some time so that all the plain bearings, rings, and pistons get used to each other.

How to run-in an engine after a major overhaul?

Run-in depends on the work performed. The run-in itself involves a certain set of activities:

  • When driving, a gentle mode is used;
  • The engine is flushed several times, filling and draining engine oil;
  • filter elements are replaced.

So, if the repair affected the gas distribution mechanism, the camshaft, chain, valves were replaced, then running in the engine is enough to carry out the first 500 - 1000 km.

If liners, pistons and piston rings have been completely replaced, new connecting rod and main bearings have been installed on the crankshaft, and so on, then a gentle regime must be observed up to 3000 km.

The gentle mode eliminates sudden starts and braking, acceleration of more than 50 km/h, crankshaft revolutions of more than 2500. Sudden accelerations are prohibited and overloads are excluded.

Why is it necessary to run in an engine after a major overhaul?

Firstly, the piston rings must fall into place in the piston grooves, since with a sharp increase in speed, the rings can simply break and your engine will seize.

Secondly, during the grinding-in process of new parts, metal shavings inevitably form, which can only be gotten rid of by changing the engine oil.

Thirdly, if you look at the surface of the pistons under a microscope, then even after the most thorough grinding you will notice a lot of tubercles that should level out during the running-in period.

Another factor should also be noted - even after observing the full break-in regime during the first 2000 - 3000 kilometers, complete adaptation of all parts and components occurs only after 5000 -1000 km. Only after this can the engine be required to demonstrate all its capabilities.

Advice from experts for motorists.

When starting to run in the engine after a major overhaul, be sure to check the battery charge. Since the first start after repair is a critical step, and the crankshaft is quite tight, you will need all the power of the battery.

The second point is to replace the oil filter with a new one and fill only with high-quality oil. It is impossible to wet the filter in oil before installation, since an air lock may form and the engine may experience oil starvation at the most crucial moment.

Leave the engine running and idling until the oil pressure reading returns to normal - this will take no more than 3-4 seconds.

If the sensors show a low oil pressure level, turn off the engine immediately, as there could be some problems with the oil supply - the oil pump does not pump, there is an air lock, etc. If you do not turn off the engine in time, you may have to do a new engine repair .

If everything is in order with the pressure, warm up the engine to the desired temperature. As the oil heats up, it becomes more liquid and the pressure decreases to certain values.

Another problem that occurs when running an engine after a major overhaul is the leakage of technical fluids. This problem also needs to be solved urgently, as the oil or antifreeze level may decrease, which threatens to overheat the engine.

You can start the engine several times, warm it up to the required temperatures, idle it a little and then turn it off. If you don’t hear any extraneous noises or knocks, you can safely leave the garage.

Observe the speed limit - for the first 2000 - 3000 km, do not exceed the speed of more than 50 km/h. After 3000 km you can accelerate to 80-90 km/h.

At the 5000 km mark, you can change the engine oil - various foreign particles will appear in it. Fill the engine only with the oil recommended by the manufacturer.

After traveling 5,000 - 10,000 km, the engine can be loaded to its fullest.

Running in the engine after a major overhaul

Sooner or later, any engine expects a major overhaul. The reasons for carrying it out may be different. However, a newly overhauled engine requires special attention.

In this article we will take a detailed look at how the engine should always be run in after a major overhaul, we will try to give useful tips, valuable recommendations and help you avoid many troubles.

A major overhaul involves dismantling, completely disassembling and reassembling the engine. It includes replacing all engine consumables. Essentially, the engine is removed and completely disassembled.

All consumable and damaged parts are removed and replaced. The remaining parts of the engine are thoroughly washed and, if necessary, modified.

After this, the engine is assembled and installed on the car.

The result is a completely updated engine, the same as we are used to seeing it after buying a new car from a car dealership. Like a new engine, it requires a similar attitude, namely, running-in.

Why is engine break-in necessary?

During operation of the motor, its parts are subjected to high temperature and mechanical loads. During the heating process, they tend to deform and adjust other engine elements to their parameters.

In order for new parts to “conflict” less with other shapes, they need a grinding-in period. During this time, the parts are adjusted to the specified dimensions and bring the engine to the nominal operating level.

This period is called break-in.

Break-in requirements have always been directly dependent on what specific work was performed on the engine. In general, any break-in represents a certain set of actions aimed at maintaining the performance of the engine. This complex includes:

  • Creating a minimum load on the motor. During the break-in period, it is prohibited to use high speeds. Engine control should be smooth without a sudden increase in load.
  • Constant engine flushing. During these procedures, the use of additives is strictly prohibited. Engine flushing is carried out by changing the oil at frequent intervals.
  • In addition to constant oil changes, frequent replacement of filter elements will also be required. These include both fuel pump filters, air filters and oil filters.

Duration of engine running-in after overhaul

As mentioned earlier, the duration and nature of the running-in depend entirely on the type of repair work. For example, if the engine distribution mechanism, which includes the camshaft, valves and chain, has been repaired, then the break-in period is about 500 - 1000 kilometers.

Another example is the piston part of the engine. If the technicians have replaced piston liners, rings, the pistons themselves, or elements of the connecting rod mechanism, then the break-in process increases to 3,000 kilometers. This also means that during the break-in process the engine may only be operated in light operating mode.

What does easy (or gentle) engine operation mean? It implies the complete elimination of a sharp increase in speed, as well as exceeding it above 2500 rpm. Also, it is highly not recommended to accelerate the power plant over 50 kilometers per hour.

This is necessary so that the piston rings get used and fit into their grooves, since if the movement starts abruptly or the load increases, they can break, lie down, or simply jam the engine. The second reason for such engine care is the metal shavings formed as a result of lapping.

It is to get rid of it that it is necessary to constantly change the engine oil until the engine is completely clean. Well, the last reason is ditches and bumps on the surface of the working part of the piston. The fact is that they are not visible to the naked eye, however, in fact, there are a very large number of them.

All these irregularities must be smoothed out to improve the efficiency of the motor.

Helpful tips when running in

Before you start the engine for the first time, invest in a sufficiently powerful battery. The fact is that the assembled motor is not yet completely lubricated with a sufficient amount of oil, and therefore the crankshaft will rotate very, very tightly. This is what requires a good battery charge.

When installing the oil filter, do not under any circumstances fill it with some oil, as we are used to doing at every oil change. The fact is that during the most important, first start, an air lock may form in the oil sump and then the moment will come when the engine will experience what is popularly called “oil starvation.”

After starting the engine, you must carefully monitor the oil pressure gauge. In normal mode, oil pressure appears 3-5 seconds after starting the engine.

If this does not happen, and it is in the lower limits, then you must immediately turn off the engine. In this case, look for the problem in the oil pump and check for an air lock.

If the engine is not turned off in time, then there is a risk of putting the engine back in for another major overhaul.

It is possible that the oil pressure may be slightly higher than normal levels. There is nothing wrong with this, just let the engine warm up to rated temperature. After this, the oil will become more liquid and then the pressure will drop to normal levels.

During the break-in process, it happens that technical fluids can escape in small volumes. This problem also needs to be solved without fail. The fact is that a leak of antifreeze or oil can also lead to engine seizure due to overheating or oil starvation.

When pouring new oil, try to select it with a higher viscosity coefficient than before. The fact is that during the repair process, the cylinders are bored to large sizes and pistons of repair dimensions are installed. To maintain the same compression when changing sizes, it is necessary to fill in a thinner oil than before.

Why do you need an engine run-in after a major overhaul?

Home » Repair and service » Why do you need to run in the engine after a major overhaul?

Overhaul of the engine violates the established unity of the “used” elements. Boring the cylinder block and installing new piston elements will change the vehicle's output characteristics. Often the power is reduced by almost half of that specified by the designers.

In order to restore the original characteristics, the power plant must undergo a run-in regime. Such engine running-in after overhaul is usually performed for a specified operating time or mileage.

Engine operation after major overhaul

On average, engine break-in for modern cars ranges from 2 to 3 thousand kilometers. Complete grinding-in does not occur during this period, but it becomes possible to operate the machine in more aggressive modes, with an increased load.

The car reaches its operating parameters after 10-15 thousand kilometers.

When an engine is run in after a major overhaul, the heating of the rubbing elements increases during grinding. In this regard, power loads on the motor are undesirable, and it is recommended not to raise the speed above 60% of its maximum level during standard operation.

The power plant, after improper running-in, can lose up to 70% of the calculated parameter in power.

If the car is used correctly, all parameters will quickly return to the planned ones.

The purpose of running a car

The machined surface of engine cylinders and newly installed repair units has protrusions and depressions, sometimes sharpened marks from the work of the cutter, which were not removed by honing. The task of running-in is to smooth out such defects. Due to this, friction is reduced and the load on all operating components is reduced.

Engine assembly for break-in

The opinion that running in a new engine due to the installation of new components in the engine does not make sense is erroneous.

Each new part has residual micro-roughnesses that will be removed during the grinding process. The time required for the entire process depends on the size of such irregularities. After complete grinding, all elements: cylinders, piston rings, pistons receive a new surface cleanliness on the contacting surfaces.

Process Recommendations

There are rules, if followed, the process will lead to the desired results:

  1. The oil used during break-in must be on the list recommended by the manufacturer.
  2. Oil must be supplied no later than 5 seconds after starting the engine to all necessary components to avoid dry friction.
  3. When the engine is idling, the oil pressure in the system should be in the range from 0.5 to 1 atmosphere.
  4. It is necessary to check the functionality of the sensors of the measuring equipment.

Why is it necessary to run in an engine after a major overhaul?

Cars November 6, 2013

If your iron friend has recently undergone a major overhaul of its “heart” (that is, the motor), then in the near future you need to take care of its careful operation, without jerks and jumps. What is it for? You will find out the answer to this question in this article.

Why is this process needed?

Running in an engine after a major overhaul is a mandatory procedure, without which no engine that has recently undergone major structural changes can do. The reason is as follows: new parts that were installed to replace worn ones must go through a grinding-in stage, after which the level of friction between the liner and rings will return to its place.

As a rule, after boring and grinding new parts, the repaired motor should travel 2 thousand kilometers in a gentle mode. Many motorists believe that after 2 thousand, the running-in of the engine after overhaul is completed and it can be used to its full potential.

This is fundamentally wrong, since during this period of time new spare parts only get used to each other, and they are finally adapted only after 15 thousand kilometers. Only after this can you squeeze all the juices out of the machine.

If this happens earlier, all the new parts will be severely damaged, and then you will have to go to the service station again, ordering the same services from a familiar mechanic. Engine repairs, as a rule, are not cheap, and buying a used engine will not save you from significant expenses.

According to experts, the load on the repaired unit should not exceed more than 60 percent of its total capabilities.

This provides for smooth gear shifting, slow acceleration and braking, and no high revs.

It is then that running in the engine after a major overhaul will give you a new, powerful and reliable engine that will provide the car with a harmonious and smooth ride.

Are quality parts needed in this procedure?

Of course yes! Any part, even the highest quality, needs to be run in. Moreover, it does not matter on which cars the engines are repaired - UAZ, VAZ or BMW (the result is the same). And if one of the mechanics claims the opposite, this indicates a low level of his qualifications as a specialist (or a desire to “cut” more money from the client).

How effective is this procedure?

After running-in, the repaired internal combustion engine will fully exhibit its inherent characteristics, namely:

  1. It will operate stably at idle speed (frequency does not exceed 600 rpm).
  2. When changing gears from low to high or vice versa, as well as when the gearbox moves to neutral, the car does not stall or make unusual sounds.
  3. The crankshaft is rotated (using the crank) without any additional effort.

Of course, the car will not acquire such properties immediately, but rest assured that after 2 months of operation in the city and beyond, running in the engine after a major overhaul will allow it to be used in full.

Why is an engine run-in necessary after a major overhaul?

At the factory, the engine is manufactured in such a way that immediately after purchasing the car it is able to operate in normal modes. After a major overhaul, running-in is an integral procedure.

Reasons for the need for break-in

  • Components from different manufacturers and, accordingly, with different tolerances and different quality.
  • Boring and grinding to repair dimensions is obviously less accurate than in the manufacturing plant.
  • Assembly is carried out by specialists of various qualifications, which does not guarantee exact compliance with technical conditions.

Taken together, these factors do not allow the output to achieve factory parameters after a major overhaul.

Physical processes of parts running-in

If installed correctly and the repair dimensions are observed, liners, valves, and camshaft do not require long-term grinding. They are immediately ready to work in normal mode, the main thing is not to put heavy loads on the first 2-4 thousand. Parts of the cylinder-piston group require running-in.

  1. Roughness. The cylinder-ring contact pair initially has different roughness and microrelief. During the first few thousand runs, the roughness value in this friction pair equalizes. Under increased loads, high temperatures, low lubrication, and increased inter-motion speeds, a rougher surface will cut through a smoother surface at an accelerated rate. This will subsequently lead to increased clearances and faster wear.
  2. Geometry. If piston group parts are manufactured inaccurately, or if cylinders are bored without proper tolerances, distortions in geometric dimensions (taper, ellipsoidal) are possible. After warming up, this manifests itself in difficult, strained rotation of the crankshaft. And sometimes the engine simply stalls, unable to overcome the friction force that has increased due to thermal expansion. Manufacturers apply a microrelief of several microns on the outer surfaces of the rings, designed to quickly compensate for these geometric defects due to rapid abrasion.

Break-in process

There is no universal method, since each repaired power unit is unique in its own way. There are some general recommendations that you can follow to break in any Volkswagen engine:

  • After the first start, you need to let the engine warm up. If it continues to work, let it work for 10-15 minutes. If the speed starts to drop, or the engine stalls altogether, let it cool completely and then start it again. We carry out this operation until the engine starts to idle smoothly at operating temperature;
  • step by step (up to 3 thousand) we add revolutions by 500, letting it work for 3-5 minutes;
  • We operate the car without exceeding 3 thousand revolutions for the first 2-4 thousand mileage. We do not transport trailers and do not load the vehicle to its maximum carrying capacity. Contrary to popular belief, there are no speed limits. It all depends on the gearbox. The main thing is not to exceed the speed;
  • after 2-4 thousand we change the oil.

Possible consequences of using an untested engine

If you do not break in the engine, but immediately load it to the maximum, the following consequences may occur:

  • resource reduction;
  • increased oil consumption already from the first kilometers;
  • reduced power;
  • increased fuel consumption
  • the engine may simply seize.

Why do you need an engine run-in after a major overhaul?

Complex overhaul of a car engine is always associated with the fact that completely new rubbing parts appear in the engine. And every part that is installed on a car has completely acceptable inaccuracies in its dimensions. This is due to manufacturing technology and the tolerances that exist in the manufacture of parts and assemblies.

Experienced drivers know that after purchasing a new car, it is necessary to carry out the so-called hot engine run-in for some time.

That is, for the first few thousand kilometers, adhere to optimal driving conditions, do not press hard on the gas or brake, and do not let the engine run for a long time at idle or at high speeds. On our Vodi website.

su you can find fairly complete information on how to properly conduct a hot engine run-in.

To restore the engine to its previous performance characteristics, a major overhaul may be required, involving the replacement of individual parts or entire units. After a thorough intervention, it is not recommended to use the vehicle in the usual manner until the vehicle has undergone a phased run-in in compliance with all rules and recommendations.

Perhaps, when running in a repaired engine, you need to follow the same rules as when operating a new, recently purchased car. The engine oil must be mineral oil, otherwise the break-in period will double.

And in general, before the first start, it doesn’t hurt to measure the compression - it will become clear what to expect from the “new” engine. In general, after a major overhaul, only a specialist can properly break in the engine.

But using standard rules, you can carry out this process yourself, even with some difficulties...

Many car enthusiasts know that every car needs repairs from time to time. However, few people understand that running in the engine after a major overhaul is mandatory. minimal (replacement of camshaft or chain). Then the engine is run in for a minimum of 500 km; The engine is being overhauled. In this case, running-in is 1500-2000 km;

replace block liners or piston rings. To break-in in this case, you need to go 3-4 thousand in a gentle mode (speed 50 km/h) and no “jerks” for the engine and revolutions exceeding 2500.

What is engine break-in? This is a very important stage in the beginning of the operation of the car, which is a grinding-in process, the running-in of engine elements to each other, during which a certain tightness of fit is formed between its parts, affecting its efficiency; you can also read about this topic in the article running in a new car. That is why experienced car enthusiasts treat this process with great attention and responsibility.

Most car owners are aware of how the engine is broken in after a major overhaul or the purchase of a new vehicle - a necessity to make the engine more responsive and economical. Operation in a “gentle mode” (i.e.

without heavy loads) increases engine life by about 15-20%. At the same time, the machine will achieve the performance stated by the manufacturer.

Proper engine running-in after overhaul ensures restoration of 100% functionality of components and assemblies.

Properly running in the engine after a major overhaul

The engine, after repairs, must be subjected to a break-in procedure, which is nothing more than the grinding in of newly installed parts and components to achieve maximum performance. What the engine running-in should be like after a major overhaul and how to carry it out is what will be discussed in this article.

Cold running of the engine

When using this method, all the necessary units are connected to the engine, after which it is forced to start in accordance with the specified parameters and in a strictly limited period of time. This method is safer and eliminates damage to individual components and components due to sudden changes in temperature.

As a rule, cold running-in is carried out in service stations and service centers, and its duration does not exceed 3 hours. Using it at home is unlikely and is associated with significant financial costs.

Run-in in natural conditions

When choosing this method, special attention should be paid to the first start of the engine, which should be carried out in a certain order and in compliance with all the rules below:

  • There must be a sufficient amount of oil;
  • The battery must be charged 100%, otherwise it simply will not cope with the first launch;
  • If there is no pump, fuel pumping should be done manually;
  • When starting the engine, special attention must be paid to the oil pressure - it must be optimal. If this does not happen within a few seconds, turn off the engine, fix the problem and continue running;
  • You should warm up the engine to about 90 degrees, while paying attention to leaks - a fairly rare phenomenon, but still. But you shouldn’t react too much to the burning smell - it’s okay, it’s just the grease burning out. As the coolant heats up, the pressure will drop; it is important here that the readings do not drop below 0.4–0.8 kg/cm2;
  • If everything is in order, you can turn off the engine and let it rest until the temperature drops by 30 - 40 degrees, then start the engine again;
  • Perform this operation 15 - 20 times and proceed to running in at higher speeds: 1000 rpm - about 3 minutes, 1500 rpm - 4 minutes, 2000 rpm - about 5 minutes. After this, you can proceed to the next phase - running in on the road.

How to run-in correctly - simple tips

And here there are several simple rules, following which will allow you to achieve an acceptable result with minimal cost:

  • Do not overload the car - avoid driving at high speeds and low gears, try not to suddenly slow down and do not carry an excessively heavy load;
  • Observe the speed limit - until the car has traveled at least 200-300 km, you should limit the speed to 80 km/h, moving as far as possible without jerking or acceleration. After about 300 km, you can slightly increase the speed, but still maintain a constant speed;
  • Do not skimp on the oil - it should be changed at least 4 times during the break-in period. The first - after about 500 km, the second - after about 1000 km (simultaneously with flushing the engine), the third - after 1500 km, the fourth - after 2000 km. In the future, the oil should be changed after approximately 5,000 km. And remember, loads should be given gradually, without forcing events.

Running in a diesel engine

Running in a diesel engine is in many ways similar to the procedure described above. But still, there are a number of features, knowledge of which will allow you to get excellent results and ensure long-term and safe operation of your car:

  • When you first start the engine, you should let it idle for about 5 - 7 minutes and only then start driving;
  • It is not recommended to use high (more than 2000) engine speeds;
  • You should avoid overloads, move evenly, without sudden braking and acceleration;
  • The optimal speed is about 65 km/h;
  • It is prohibited to use various additives to improve fuel parameters, giving preference to higher quality samples, which should only be purchased at proven gas stations;
  • Approximately every 200 kilometers, the oil filter and oil in the system should be changed.

Summing up

Running in the engine is a fairly simple, but at the same time tedious procedure, during which you should follow the instructions outlined in this material. However, with due patience and perseverance, you are guaranteed an excellent result.

Proper running-in of the engine of a new car and the engine after repair

A car engine is a complex unit in which hundreds of elements must work harmoniously in order for its performance to correspond to its declared characteristics. When buying a car, its future owner first of all looks at the engine, its power and reviews of the performance of similar engine models from other owners of identical power units.

You can often find conflicting reviews about a particular engine on forums, social networks and websites on the Internet. Some drivers say that it can travel hundreds of thousands of kilometers without any complaints, others say that the engine can quickly fail. They are based on our own experience, and their results vary depending on:

  • Lots of parts used in the engine;
  • Quality check of the motor before installing it on the car;
  • Driving manners;
  • Initial running-in of the engine.

Many car buyers pay little attention to the last point, but in vain. Properly performed engine running-in can significantly extend the service life of its components.

What is engine break-in

In common parlance, break-in refers to the permissible operating conditions for the first few thousand kilometers, which the car manufacturer most often indicates in the technical manual.

There is an opinion that modern cars do not need to break in the engine, but it is wrong.

Even with the improvement of technologies for the production of car components, it will not be possible to assemble an engine perfectly every time.

Here we come to the definition of the concept of “break-in”. By it, drivers understand the process of grinding car parts into each other. Most often, running-in is considered in terms of the engine, but on a new car it is also necessary for the suspension, brakes and other components.

During the operation of the car for the first few thousand kilometers, the parts in it break in, that is, they rub against each other.

Microscopic irregularities as a result of friction are eliminated, thereby creating a tight fit between the machine parts, and the efficiency of its motor approaches the maximum possible values.

How to properly break in a new engine

One of the most difficult questions that can be asked of an experienced motorist is drawing up precise instructions for running in a new engine. The fact is that there is simply no single method for running in an engine that came off the production line not so long ago. There are several key recommendations that are suitable for each engine during break-in:

  • Try to reduce the time the car idles;
  • Minimize the number of sudden accelerations and sudden braking - perform all actions to increase and decrease speed smoothly;
  • Do not keep the engine at the same speed for a long time to avoid “narrow” lapping of the engine for a specific operating mode. This may be useful for some specialized vehicles that are used daily in the same modes, but not for a personal car;
  • Reduce driving time at low speeds when the car is moving “under tension”;
  • During break-in, keep the tachometer needle at a level of 2 to 4 thousand revolutions;
  • It is not recommended to run a new engine in the city due to the “ragged” driving conditions. It’s better to go on a country road, but you shouldn’t accelerate the car too much. It is optimal for it to move at a speed of 90 to 110 kilometers per hour, and sometimes the speed should be reduced to 60 kilometers per hour and then raised again. It would be a good idea to make short stops (without turning off the engine) every 30-40 kilometers.
  • During break-in, you should not increase the weight of the car - seat more than two people in the cabin, transport large loads, tow a vehicle or trailer.

Most car manufacturers indicate in the technical passport information about the permissible operating conditions of the car in the first few thousand kilometers. Adjust the tips above according to the machine manufacturer's recommendations.

Despite the desire to test a new car, do not allow it to jerk sharply during the break-in period.

Naturally, many drivers want to check whether the car can really pick up speed from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour within the time limits stated by the manufacturer.

This is unlikely to be possible with a new engine, and it will end up in a stressful situation, which may affect its durability.

Running in the car engine after repair

It’s not only new engines that need running-in. It is necessary to subject an engine in which a number of parts have been replaced with new ones if they interact mechanically with old elements.

That is, replacing the washer reservoir, sensors and similar parts will not require running in the engine after repair, whereas when installing new mechanical elements: liners, pistons, rings and others, the engine should be run in.

How long to run the engine after repair

Depending on the complexity of the work performed during engine repair, the duration of engine running-in will vary. The duration of the run-in can be roughly divided as follows:

  • No more than 500 kilometers. If simple work was carried out with a minimum number of replaced parts. For example, a new chain was tensioned, the camshaft or valves were replaced;
  • From 1500 to 2000 kilometers. If a major overhaul of the engine was carried out and a large number of parts were replaced with new ones, it is recommended to run the engine for about 2000 kilometers, about the same amount required for a new engine;
  • From 2500 kilometers. In a situation where the engine has not undergone a major overhaul, but many key parts have been replaced, it will need to be run in for about 2,500 kilometers. This is due to the fact that new parts need to get used to the old ones. This process is much more complex than grinding in new elements. For example, if the oil scraper and compression rings have been replaced, it will take about 2,500 kilometers for them to start working optimally with the old liners and pistons.

The process of running in an engine after repair is no different from running in a new engine, with the exception of its first start.

How to perform the first engine start after repair

The so-called post-repair engine start-up is a difficult process, especially if the repair was not a major one, but key parts were changed. To ensure that the first engine start goes as smoothly as possible, you need to perform the following steps step by step:

  1. Check the battery charge level. If the charge is poor, the engine may not start, but will be in a stressful state;
  2. Make sure that the oil in the machine was replaced after repair with a new one, which is recommended for this machine by the manufacturer;
  3. Turn the key in the ignition and start the engine, observing the oil pressure light on the instrument panel. If it does not go out 7-9 seconds after the engine starts, then this indicates low oil pressure. In such a situation, you need to turn off the engine and look for the problem;

Important: When starting the engine after repair, you should not try to increase the oil pressure with the gas pedal. Such a first start may be the last for the engine, and it will again require serious repairs.

  1. If there are no problems with oil pressure, wait until the car warms up a little, and at this time make sure that there are no leaks of various technical fluids from it;
  2. When the engine temperature approaches 80-90 degrees, turn it off and let it cool to 40-50 degrees, then start again according to the scheme described above. It is necessary to make at least 5-10 similar engine starts, after which you can go out on the road to run the engine in real conditions.

Proper running-in of a new or repaired engine can significantly extend its service life.
