Review of Toyota Corolla: queen of Russian roads

The last two years have been very difficult for the Russian automobile market: car sales have seriously declined, many automobile brands have left Russia, and the remaining ones had to optimize their model range. Toyota continues to be one of the leaders in the domestic market, with an 8.3 percent share in 2016 (Avtostat data is used hereinafter). All key Japanese models - Camry, RAV4, Land Cruiser 200, Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux - are leaders in their segments. As we can see, Corolla is missing from this list.

From January to June 2016, dealers were able to sell less than a thousand cars.

In August last year, sales of the updated Corolla began, and the situation has changed. Over the five remaining months of 2016, Russians purchased 2,792 cars, which is 68% more than during the same period in 2015. Let's try to figure out how restyling helped the Toyota Corolla become more successful.

⇡#Exterior

The noticeably refreshed Corolla now looks more like its big brother, the Camry. Of course, the design of the Corolla still cannot be called bright, but compared to its predecessor, the car has become prettier both in front and in the back.

The elongated headlights flow harmoniously into a neat chrome radiator grille. Our version is equipped with LED headlights for low and high beam, daytime running lights also consist of a strip of LEDs. The shape of the bumper has changed slightly, although on black cars this is not as noticeable as, for example, on white ones.

Triangular mirrors do not please with visibility - their sizes could be larger.

When viewed from the side, it will be difficult to distinguish the car from its competitors, but the rear of the Corolla after restyling has been slightly transformed due to LED lights.

The two entry-level trims are content with 15-inch stamped wheels, while the rest, including ours, boast 16-inch alloy wheels with 205/55 R16 tires.

In general, the restyling benefited the Toyota Corolla, refreshing the appearance of the car. The calm, but at the same time modern design will certainly appeal to buyers aged 35 years and above.

The interior of a car depends on its configuration, and the Corolla is no exception.

Expensive versions are seriously different in interior from the basic ones: in the initial versions, for example, there is no 4.2-inch display on the instrument panel, so the instruments themselves look different.

The car provided for testing was in the “Style Plus” configuration - only the top-end version called “Prestige” is cooler than it.

Clearly more Toyota employees worked on the interior of the updated Corolla than on the exterior design - the changes here are much more noticeable. A 7-inch LCD touch screen for the multimedia system, familiar to us from the SUVs of the Japanese company, appeared on the center console. It is surrounded by glossy plastic that quickly collects fingerprints.

A multifunction steering wheel with leather trim and heating is available with the third-lowest price of the “Style” package. The steering wheel is not heated entirely, but only in the grip zone.

The instrument panel, even in expensive versions, looks rustic, although there are no complaints about the instruments themselves - the readings are read without problems.

Among other interior elements, the most striking are the airflow deflectors, made in the form of turbines: they not only look great, but are also very convenient to use - the air flow is easy to direct in the desired direction, and its strength can be adjusted using the “twist” in the center. But the design of the buttons for turning on the heated steering wheel and windshield takes us back to the 90s. The buttons responsible for the position of the mirrors do not look any better - so it’s even good that they are almost invisible from behind the steering wheel.

But the dual-zone climate control unit with rocker keys looks very modern and is very convenient to use. Nice graphics on the display create a complete image.

Just below are the buttons for turning on the two-stage heating of the front seats - their appearance contrasts with the climate control unit. Nearby are USB and AUX connectors, as well as a 12-V socket. A small compartment for storing small items is hidden under the button block.

A large glove compartment will please those who like to store a lot of “useful” things in the car.

The fabric-upholstered seats have only mechanical adjustments, and the lumbar support cannot be adjusted in principle. The seats themselves will be comfortable for people of substantial build; slimmer drivers will feel a lack of lateral support.

The rear sofa pleases with its spaciousness - there is so much space up to the front seats that even a very tall person can sit comfortably in the back. The Corolla is one of the most spacious cars in the C-Class.

Trunk volume is 452 liters. The indicator is not bad, but the hinges of the lid may prevent you from filling it entirely. The second row seats recline in a 60:40 ratio.

“Toyota Corolla 110” (body): technical specifications, photos

Toyota Corolla is one of the most popular Japanese cars on the Russian market. It is worth noting that the car has been produced for several decades in different bodies. The cost of a Toyota car (sedan) varies quite significantly. In today's article we will look at the 110th body. This is the eighth generation of Toyota Corolla cars. Photos and review of the car are further in our article.

Design

The previous Toyota body was taken as a basis. Externally, these two cars are very similar. We can say that the Toyota Corolla 110 is a kind of restyled series of the 7th generation of cars.

But there are some differences. Take a look at what the Toyota Corolla (110 body) looks like. There is a photo of the car in our article. Unlike the previous generation, the 8th Corolla acquired more rounded optics and a slicked-down bumper. The radiator grille is no longer a separate element.

The part is connected to the bumper into one unit. The moldings were either black or painted to match the body color. By the way, the bumpers, even in luxury versions, were not equipped with fog lights.

In general, the design of the Toyota car (sedan) is typical for its years - simple, but no longer angular shapes, a slightly “blown” body and a sloping roof.

The body of the eighth generation, and in particular its interior, had no characteristic differences from its predecessor in the 100th body. The car’s interior became more “blown” and rounded. Instrument panel - with analogue arrows. In the middle of the console is a small on-board computer.

At the bottom there is a climate control unit, a radio and a cigarette lighter. The steering wheel, as car owners say, is very comfortable. Also in the cabin we can see missing “levers” for controlling the mirrors. Here they are adjusted electrically. The car also has electric windows. The interior of the Toyota 110 is very comfortable and ergonomic.

The seats are not devoid of adjustments and have good lumbar support.

By the way, the 110th Corolla is distinguished by a very high-quality velor finish. Its texture on the seats matches the door cards. The armrest located between the driver and front passenger is also covered in velor. The quality of the plastic is excellent. It is moderately hard and does not rattle on bumps. In general, the level of sound insulation and interior assembly is worthy of respect.

Specifications

The car had a wide range of engines. There are both diesel and petrol units available. Thus, in the basic configuration, the Corolla was equipped with a 1.3-liter engine with 86 horsepower. Remarkably, this engine had a 16-valve head. The motor was equipped with three different gearboxes. Five- and six-speed manual transmissions were available, as well as a three-speed automatic transmission.

The next unit in the line has a volume of 1.6 liters. Its maximum power is 110 horsepower. The buyer could choose one of two proposed checkpoints.

A five-speed manual and a four-mode automatic were available. As for diesel modifications, the Corolla was equipped with a two-liter 72-horsepower naturally aspirated engine.

This engine was paired with a five-speed manual transmission.

Since this car is no longer produced, it is only available on the secondary market. The difference in prices for the most part depends not on the configuration, but on the condition of the car itself. On average, the price of the 110th Corolla in Russia is 150-200 thousand rubles.

Toyota Corolla interior made with natural and eco-leather

Toyota Corolla is one of the most common cars in its class. The car has been produced since 1966, during which time nine generations entered the European car market and about 10 million units were sold, making this car one of the best-selling cars in the world.

This time, it’s not a new Corolla that arrived at our studio, but we should give credit to the owner of this car, since the interior looks very well maintained and it was extremely pleasant to work with.

The car owner had a limited budget, but he really wanted a leather interior. Due to the current situation in the country, the issue of saving is very relevant, and we have come up with a way to do this.

Previously, we reupholstered the interiors with either completely natural leather or completely eco-leather, but here we decided to use a little trick and combined these two materials. We heard and saw the results of such experiments earlier from our colleagues in the workshop, so we thought: “Why not?”, especially since the car owner was more than happy with this option.

In this car, we redesigned the seats with headrests, door inserts, armrest, and, of course, the steering wheel. Initially, the seats, armrest and door inserts were made of fabric, which over time lost its appearance, and the steering wheel was completely rubber.

The cut of the seats did not have to be changed; in these cars it is quite successful and does not require any significant changes. As a basis, we took BMW genuine leather Dakota, black. This leather was used to reupholster the main, so to speak, “visible” part of the seats with headrests, door inserts and armrest.

Dakota leather has proven itself very well in the automotive leather market. It is durable, wear-resistant, and fits well when reupholstering the interior.

But, as already mentioned, our task was to make the interior reupholstery more accessible, and we made eco-leather inserts. These inserts were made in the lower, inconspicuous part of the seats and in other “hidden” places. Eco-leather was chosen from Germany, the same black color as natural leather.

There is an opinion that eco-leather is ordinary leatherette, but no, it is a material whose qualities are as close as possible to natural leather, and in some respects it even surpasses it.

It is made from raw materials based on polyurethane and does not contain harmful PVC, which contains leatherette. In fact, eco-leather is “fabric with polyurethane”, as it is a mixture of fabric and leather.

It completely replicates the texture of the genuine leather we have chosen, and by touch it is also indistinguishable from the original. When the seat parts were assembled and ironed, even we were not immediately able to distinguish genuine leather from eco-leather.

Also, as mentioned earlier, we reupholstered the rubber steering wheel in this car. Still, it’s not good to drive a car with solid leather and a rubber steering wheel. We didn’t change the anatomy of the steering wheel, we just completely rewrapped it in the same BMW Dakota leather, the same black color.

Summing up, I would like to say that we completely coped with the task. The owner received the desired leather interior, while investing within his budget. Our tuning studio provides guarantees for all the work we perform.
