How to determine the release date of a battery

Choosing a car battery is not an easy procedure. As a rule, it is accompanied by a long study of information from specialized forums and tests from authoritative publications.

Based on the data obtained, the optimal option is selected in terms of price-quality ratio. It would seem that all that remains is to go to the store and purchase the product you are looking for.

However, there is one nuance that not all car enthusiasts take into account. We are talking about the shelf life of the battery.

It is not uncommon for a battery to remain idle at retail locations for several months. During this period, its consumer characteristics inevitably deteriorate, especially if storage conditions turn out to be unfavorable. The permissible idle time without recharging differs for different types of batteries.

Thus, conventional batteries made using antimony have a shelf life of 6-10 months, calcium batteries retain their properties longer - up to two years. There are, of course, batteries that are more resistant to self-discharge (some BOSCH products can be stored for up to 3 years).

Any car battery has a marking that encodes the date of its manufacture. The problem is that there are no uniform encoding standards, just as its location is not regulated.

An alphanumeric code that hides the battery's production date can be engraved on the case or indicated on one of the labels. Each manufacturer is free to label batteries at its own discretion.

On a BOSCH battery, a three-digit code in the above format is duplicated on the front side in the center of the sticker.

Since 2014, a different coding for the release date of VARTA and BOSCH batteries has been used. The same 4, 5 and 6 positions of the production code are used for designation, but the format has changed.

Now in the 4th place there is a number indicating the year of manufacture, and in the 5th and 6th places there is a month code in the format: January 17, February 18, March 19, April 20, May 53, June 54, July 55, August 56, September 57, October 58, November 59, December 60.
