Korean car brands - detailed list

The Korean automobile industry began to develop rapidly in the mid-70s of the last century. The first cars were intended for sale within the country and were produced only at 4 factories, which later became world-class vehicle manufacturers.

History of Korean car brands

Until the end of the Second World War, until the liberation of the state from Japanese occupation, there were no automobile manufacturing enterprises in the country. A little more than 7,000 foreign-assembled cars roamed local roads.

After a while, a need arose to meet the needs of our own citizens in personal vehicles. In this regard, the government decided to open several factories that are still operating today: Asia Motors, Kia Industries, Hyundai Motors, and ShinJu (future Daewoo Motors).

The last major concern, Renault Samsung Motors, was built in 1994.

The first Korean car brand rolled off the assembly line in 1955. It was called Sibal and was a complete replica of the American military SUV Willys. Further production was based on the production of cheap passenger cars of decent quality.

The world was skeptical about the efforts of Korean engineers, and most drivers considered Korean equipment to be consumer goods. The situation changed at the turn of the millennium.

The so-called “Asian crisis” became a turning point in the development of the automobile industry: Korean-made and assembled car brands were appreciated all over the world.

Presentable cars, reliable, safe and equipped with modern innovative technologies of our own design, competed with their European and Asian counterparts.

Korean car manufacturers produce both budget-class subcompacts and luxury sedans. Today, Korea occupies an honorable 5th place in the ranking in terms of the number of cars sold per year, second only to China, the USA, Japan and Germany.

Review of Korean car brands

Korean car brands have become popular and in demand thanks to:

  • reasonable combination of price and quality;
  • wide model line;
  • ease of maintenance;
  • availability and adequate cost of spare parts;
  • high quality guarantee;
  • fully equipped, meeting international standards;
  • excellent technical characteristics. Cars are designed for driving on poor quality roads.

Famous car brands of Korea

The list of Korean car brands is represented by five main companies that have managed to make a name for themselves on the world stage. South Korean factories produce the best cars at a reasonable, optimally weighted price.

Hyundai Motor Company

The country's largest concern occupies fourth place in the world TOP ranking. The hood of cars is decorated with the letter “H”, enclosed in an oval, symbolizing a handshake between the client and the company.

The brand name translates as “modernity,” and the company’s slogan is the expression “New thinking and new opportunities!” Engineers took the call literally and developed passenger cars that were unique in design and equipment.

The model range includes both budget small cars and impressive SUVs of high build quality.

Focusing on the requirements of the modern market, the company has improved the production of compact machines.

At the same time, subcompact SUVs, miniature SUVs, minibuses and crossovers are equipped with powerful gasoline engines and are able to overcome any obstacles encountered on the roads. All models look impressive and expensive.

Connoisseurs of elegant luxury can purchase spacious cars for 6-8 passengers at an affordable price.

It is noteworthy that the company’s assembly shops are located not only in South Korea, but also in China, Turkey, Brazil, the USA, Russia and other countries. This made it possible to optimize production and provide the end consumer with an affordable price for high-quality vehicles. More than 5 million cars are produced annually under the Korean Hyundai brand.

KIA Motors

The company changed names frequently. In 1944, bicycles and motor vehicles were produced under the Kyungsung Precisi-n Industries brand.

This continued until early 1951, when the company was officially renamed KIA Industries to simplify the name. In the mid-70s, the company switched to producing cars.

At the turn of the millennium, the number of Korean cars of this brand produced exceeded one million, which became possible thanks to the optimal price for vehicles.

The automaker received its current name in 1990. The oval logo is stylized in the traditional South Korean style. The badge features three steel-colored capital letters on a red background. The abbreviation KIA stands for “Enter the World from Asia”, which underscored the company's desire to go global.

Kia car models are distinguished by their spectacular design, luxurious interior, modern technical equipment and personalization options. In the wide range you can find small compact runabouts, seven-seater jeeps, sports cars, hybrid SUVs, sedans and compact vans.

The 1998 crisis forced the company's management to come under the control of the more powerful Hyundai automaker. Since then, KIA Motors has been one of its divisions.

Daewoo

Daewoo Industrial was founded in 1967. This is the only South Korean enterprise that included several financial and industrial groups.

Closer to 2000, the government decided to liquidate the corporation. But some divisions became part of the auto giant General Motors, and continued to produce cars of this brand in Korea under the Daewoo brand.

The badge features a silver lily, symbolizing purity and greatness.

Korean cars of the Daewoo (Tew) brand are included in the list of the most competitive cars at the best price. According to crash tests and driver reviews, the cars meet modern quality standards and have a good degree of safety.

The automaker has an extensive network of assembly shops around the world. Compact women's cars, spacious sedans and budget business class cars come off the production lines.

Genesis

The youngest corporation in Korea, specializing in the production of premium cars. It is a division of Hyundai. The emblem is made in the form of spread wings, symbolizing a bird soaring above the bustle of the world. Genesis brand cars began to be produced in South Korea in 2015. In a short period, the brand managed to win the favor of drivers both within the country and abroad.

SsangYong

In South Korea and other Asian countries, the dragon symbolizes good luck, so the choice of a name that literally means two dragons is not accidental. The logo depicts two wings of a mythical creature, and the slogan sounds like “Perfection personified.”

Having started production of army jeeps in 1954, the company reoriented itself to civilian off-road vehicles. The list of Korean cars of the SsangYong brand mainly consists of reliable and solidly designed SUVs, sedans and crossovers.

Despite the sudden increase in popularity, in 2010 the company could not withstand the competition and was forced to declare bankruptcy. The rights to use the brand were transferred to the Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.

In Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan there are factories for assembling Korean cars of this brand.

Korean cars

Today, a “Korean car” means: European design, modern technologies (mostly our own), as well as high reliability and safety (and these are not “big words”, but a fact confirmed by various world rating agencies).

Despite the fact that the list of South Korean car brands is very modest, this is more than compensated by the breadth of their model range, which, in general, covers all segments: from “budget compact subcompacts” to “luxury full-size sedans.”

Today, the automotive industry of South Korea is one of the largest not only in Asia, but also in the world, but just over half a century ago such an industry did not exist in the country as such, and local companies were only capable of producing spare parts... More Moreover, in those days the level of motorization in the country was depressing - there was one car for more than three thousand inhabitants.

The first South Korean car “came into being” only in 1955 - it was then that brothers (and part-time businessmen) Choi Moo-Sung, Choi Hye-Song and Choi Sun-Sun assembled an SUV from parts of decommissioned American cars in a makeshift workshop on the outskirts of Seoul called “Sibal” (translated as “new” or “new beginning”)... And I must say, things went well for them, because subsequently (until 1963) they produced another 3000 of these “iron horses” (but not the High Quality)…

In the future, the history of the automobile industry in the Land of Morning Freshness can be divided into four stages, the first of which began in 1962 - that year the government set a course for the large-scale development of this industry.

However, at first, local machine builders did not have any of their own developments, which is why they were forced to assemble cars from kits from foreign automakers (mainly the USA and Europe).

In the 1970s, the Koreans began to form their own automotive manufacturing base (of course, based on the technologies of their foreign colleagues) and released the first car of their own (local) production - the Hyundai Pony (the development of which began in 1973, and already in 1975 it was launched in series)…

A few years later, South Korean automakers began to develop world markets (in the lower price segment) - starting to export (with the full support of the government) their “iron horses”...

South Korean companies reached a new level only in the late 1980s - it was then that they were able to start producing cars using their own technologies.

In the 1990s, machine builders from the Land of Morning Freshness “improved” the quality of their products - which had an extremely positive impact on export volumes...

In 1998, the Koreans decided to take a course towards “globalization” - they began to invest heavily in design, further improving quality, new developments and research - which also soon bore “its fruits”... over the next twenty years, the South Korean auto industry became one of the largest in the world, and manufacturers from this country have gained “worldwide success” (they currently produce over 8 million “iron horses” annually).

The section contains a catalog of brands of South Korean passenger car manufacturers: an overview of their model range (including new products for 2018-2019) - photographs and reviews from owners. A list of the main technical characteristics of all the cars under consideration and prices for new South Korean cars in Russia are provided.

Korean cars: list with prices

Now Korean cars are widespread in the Russian market. Korea has been in fifth place in terms of sales for more than ten years, only Germany, the USA, France and Japan are ahead of it.

The undisputed top three are Kia, Daewoo and Hyundai. These brands have won consumer recognition due to their favorable price-quality ratio and excellent modern design. There are still some problems with service centers and ordering original spare parts, especially in small towns.

Korean cars are considered quite reliable, but there are still minor breakdowns. Statistically, the steering rack often needs to be replaced.

Promises of low prices, favorable ordering conditions, and advertising certainly attract consumers. However, you need to approach the purchase of Korean cars wisely. Thus, according to unofficial statistics, over the past 2014, fraudulent transactions amounting to more than $150 million were made.

And this is only on the Russian market. Problems mainly arise when purchasing cars assembled in Korea. But don’t delude yourself about Russian-assembled cars - low-quality plastic is often used, and original components are replaced with cheaper analogues.

In this video, they will tell you which Korean cars are most often bought by Russians. Enjoy watching!

Complex electronics do not always receive proper care, which leads to frequent breakdowns of electronic components. Is there a way to buy a Korean car and not run into a fake? It's not that difficult.

It must be taken into account that the quality of cars assembled for use on the domestic Korean market is much better than that of models assembled in Russia. Original Korean components are produced either in Germany or directly in Korea. Interesting fact: sales of the Korean auto industry skyrocketed after Peter Schreyer became the chief designer of the Kia brand.

Previously, he worked with such automotive giants as Volkswagen and Audi. It is also worth considering the fact that original electronic components are produced only in Korea, so you must carefully study the documentation before purchasing.

The situation changes when we talk about Russian assembly. In principle, the type of assembly outside the country of origin is used in order to reduce the cost of the finished product. Cheap spare parts are supplied by China, Slovakia and Poland.

However, the cost of a car assembled in Korea is on average 25% higher, mainly due to transportation.

Why choose a Korean car?

Hearing the phrase “Korean car,” few car enthusiasts will express unambiguous admiration, as when mentioning Germany or Japan.

However, the Korean auto industry has a number of undoubted advantages. The first and most important thing is an adequate price.

Of course, it differs depending on the configuration or model, but it always remains below average in comparison with other foreign analogues.

The second advantage is high-quality electronic filling. High technologies are developing at an incredible speed in Korea, and, of course, this is reflected in automotive products.

Third - technical specifications.

The best Korean car brands: icons, popular models

For several years in a row, cars of Korean brands have been among the top five world leaders. It would probably be redundant to talk about the quality of Japanese, German and American cars, but Korean car brands are in no way inferior in quality to well-known world giants.

The list of Korean car manufacturers includes the following brands:

  • Alpheon;
  • Asia;
  • Daewoo;
  • Hyundai;
  • KIA;
  • Renault-Samsung;
  • SsangYong.

In fact, Alpheon cars have been produced in the USA at one of the General Motors corporation plants for more than 10 years. These car brands are none other than the expensive luxury cars Buick La Crosse.

Among the Korean vehicles, it is worth highlighting the equipment of the Asia brand, which is known all over the world due to its popular heavy-duty and medium-tonnage trucks. The company also produces vans and passenger buses.

Despite the fact that the company has small production capacity, the production of these cars is scheduled for many years in advance. 22 years ago, the first South Korean Renault-Samsung cars appeared, which are rapidly gaining popularity, but in Russia few people know about the existence of these cars.

“Almost our own” Daewoo cars are children of the “Great Universe”

“Great Universe” - this is how the name of the Daewoo car brand is translated - Korean cars that not only managed to become “their own” in Russia and a number of CIS countries, but were also produced at their car factories. Excellent build quality, attractive exterior and affordable prices for the model range of these car brands have made them popular among domestic car enthusiasts.

You've probably seen the badges of these cars: some experts say that this is a lotus installation, others claim that they symbolize pearl oysters, but the correct interpretation of this symbol lies in the spelling of the name itself - “Great Universe”. The list of the most popular Daewoo cars includes:

  • Lanos is a popular people's car, the prototype of which was the Nexia, once in demand among car owners. The car is equipped with a one and a half liter gasoline engine, and also has good build quality;
  • equipped with a 1.3-liter engine, Sens cars have become truly popular. Prices for these models do not exceed $5.8 thousand. “Sens” are distinguished by good cross-country ability, low fuel consumption, and can also boast of good quality suspension. Most of the components are supplied from Korea to factories in other countries.

Leader among “Koreans” – Hyundai

Hyundai cars have held the palm among the “Koreans” for many years, and on the global market, models of this car brand are among the top five best and best-selling cars. This popularity can be explained simply: affordable prices and impeccable build quality of cars. The list of the most popular Hyundai cars includes:

  • Solaris is an absolute bestseller in the segment of budget foreign cars. It has established itself as a reliable and balanced model.
  • Genesis is an E-class sports sedan, which is equipped with a 249-horsepower 3-liter engine. The car has a refined, noble exterior, strict lines, and a convenient and comfortable interior. You can purchase it for 1.9 million rubles (Business package);

  • The E-class Grandeur car, which can be found on the market in Business and Elegance modifications. The Business version, equipped with a 180-horsepower gasoline engine, can be purchased at a price of 1.53 million rubles, and the Elegance version for 1.69 million rubles.

Popular KIA Motors models

The products of the South Korean auto company KIA Motors have long found their fans in the territory of the former post-Soviet space. KIA cars differ from their peers in their ergonomic and comfortable interior, beautiful exterior contours, as well as excellent technical characteristics of the models.

The list of the most popular cars includes:

  • The Sorento crossover is equipped with a powerful, economical engine and is designed not only to overcome city highways, but also behaves confidently on dirt roads and rough terrain. The model has been in production for only a few years and is mainly supplied to the European car market. Car enthusiasts can purchase a Sorento for 2.75 million rubles.
  • A very interesting model among compact crossovers is the Sportage, which can be equipped with all-wheel drive or have a front suspension drive. The car handles well in country travel, on dirt roads and in the urban cycle. You can purchase the model for 1.8 million rubles.
  • Rio is a car so popular that it is produced in huge quantities, and there are many variations of it, including sedan and hatchback body styles. The model is equipped with a 107-horsepower 1.4-liter engine, which the Rio can accelerate to 100 km/h in 13 seconds. At the same time, the car accelerates without much difficulty to the manufacturer’s stated maximum of 190 km/h. In the urban cycle, fuel consumption does not exceed 8.5 liters per hundred square meters. You can buy a KIA Rio for 859 thousand rubles.

List of Korean car brands in Russia

Korean phenomenon, economic breakthrough, technocratic miracle, what is another name for the Korean automobile industry? No miracle.

It’s just that people have shown truly phenomenal ability to work and perseverance, have gone through several stages of development at once in a couple of decades, ahead of our auto industry by half a century, and are already approaching Europe, Japan and even America.

But the car itself appeared in Korea in an ordinary way, much the same as in Russia.

Two Koreas: King Gojong's Rolls Royce and Kim Il Sung's Volga

In 1904, in a Rolls Royce, King Gojong first surprised the public with a car as such. Already in 1913, the Koreans wrote the first traffic rules, because they had to somehow cope with the dominance of cars. There were 31 of them in the country.

This continued during the Japanese occupation from 1914 to 1945. The Koreans had no time for cars then - half the country was dragged away by the Soviets, half by the Americans. Both of them withdrew their troops in 1948, but from the DPRK and independent South Korea.

Korean automobile giants are getting closer to their more famous competitors

Each country went its own way. By the way, the history of the car in North Korea is no less fascinating than in South Korea, although it partly replicates the Soviet automobile industry.

There were also curious situations when factories from the DPRK openly stole cars from Mercedes or Volkswagen, and since they did not have drawings and technological maps, all the details were actually copied by eye, and sometimes from photos. One can only guess about the quality of these cars.

Until recently, the only licensed cars in North Korea were the UAZ 469 and the 24th Volga. However, we are talking about another country that has followed the path of capitalist development, and it is these best Korean cars that are now increasingly conquering the global automobile market.

“Sibal” was the name of the first car that was assembled on Korean soil in 1954. Translated as “forward!”, that is, banzai.

Not to say that the car was very Korean, because it was an American army Willys during the war, but it was restored in Korea, in one of the repair shops.

This went on for ten years, during which more than three thousand cars were restored in the same workshop.

It all started with the restoration of an American jeep

By the 70s of the last century, several car assembly plants were already operating in the country, which restored and assembled cars from American, English and Italian car kits. Later they began to purchase Soviet and Japanese kits.

These factories received access to government loans and enjoyed political support. The general believed that the production of 91% domestic components and the production of 50,000 cars per year would give a start to the Korean car and allow it to enter the foreign market.

Actually, this is what happened, although to the detriment of imports.

Foreign cars were imported into the country only in the most extreme cases, and components could cross the border only under one condition - if this part could not be made in Korea for objective reasons.

Tyranny? Despotism and tyranny? Look at the brands of Korean cars in Russia today and perhaps your opinion may change. And only about forty years have passed since the Koreans collected licensed copies of the same Fiat 124 and Toyota Corolla.

Crown of Korea - Daewoo Motors

The company was founded in 1967 as Daewoo Industrial. “The Great Universe” is roughly how its name is translated, and it has fully justified itself. Clothing, household appliances, office supplies, components for the oil industry and shipbuilding, and a few years later the company bought one of the factories, which received the right to produce cars.

This was the scope of the corporation's activities. Thanks to cooperation with General Motors, the company launched the production of the Nexia (Opel Cadet) and Espero (Ford Scorpio plus Bertone design) models.

Since 1988, production of a small car based on the Suzuki Alto (Daewoo Tico) began, and since 1991, the premium Brougham has been released based on the discontinued Opel Senator.

Magnificent convertible from Daewoo

The Asian crisis of the 90s, oddly enough, played into the hands of the company, since it almost completely passed into the tenacious hands of GM, which also affected the model range.

At this time, the most popular cars of the brand are coming out, the list of which can be continued for a long time, but almost everyone knows Lanos, Daewoo Matiz (which was painted in the Italdesign studio) and the inexpensive but large sedan Daewoo Leganza.

Some of these cars can only be bought used, but at very good prices, and given the high level of unification with global General Motors models, any spare part can be found at any disassembly site, be it in Moscow or in Gus Khrustalny. For many, Daewoo today is really the only opportunity to have a good, easy to repair and inexpensive car.

Two dragons with a German accent

This is how the company name is translated from Korean.

The company stood at the origins of the national automobile industry and was one of the first since the 50s to begin assembling military vehicles, as well as construction equipment based on American vehicles, and did this until the early 80s.

In 1986, the company decided to buy the small company Korando, which produced a single SUV and a pickup truck, and thanks to this particular model, SsangYong began to be talked about not only at home, but also abroad.

The photo shows a SsangYoung Kyron car

An SUV with a sporty character and expressive design began to sell well in Europe and the CIS countries. At that time, the bright all-terrain vehicle could be equipped with a 90- and 100-horsepower diesel engine, and the top version was sold with a Mercedes 3.2-liter gasoline engine producing 220 horsepower.

The most popular mid-size frame SUV in Russia based on the Mercedes M-Class SsangYong Rexton.

On the market we already see the third generation of this car, which has received independent development, a bright expressive design and a comfortable interior.

The SUV shares technical characteristics with the M-class, however, in 2015, a completely new 178-horsepower 2.2-liter turbodiesel was added to the engine line, the premiere of which in Russia will be announced by the end of 2016.

Star of the Russian market, Kia Motors Corporation

The company was founded long before the start of car production in the country, even before the division of Korea into South and North.

The post-war country could not even provide itself with bicycles, so the young company began its activities by manufacturing spare parts for bicycle equipment, and three years later the first bicycle in the young state rolled out of the gates of the Kia plant.

After the Korean War, in 1952, the company began construction of another plant and produced the first Korean motorcycle, the C100. Kia Motors Corporation was not going to stop there and was investing huge amounts of money in production development.

As a result of work, in 1963 the company began producing a three-wheeled truck. Its design was so popular that it was produced until the mid-70s.

Development of the Korean car brand KIA

Kia Motors Corporation is the first Korean company that focused not on licensed products, although at that time it was impossible to do without them, but on its own developments.

So, already in the mid-70s the company presented a gasoline engine for a passenger car of its own design, later a diesel engine appeared and both engines were immediately tested on new and licensed models (Mazda 1300 and Fiat 132).

In the 80s, the company refocused on the production of light-duty trucks and buses - Bonzo and Cerez, but by the end of the decade, the Asian crisis forced the company to redirect its capacity again to inexpensive passenger cars based on Japanese models (Mazda 121). Kia Pride helped the company stay afloat and even increase capacity amid a severe crisis.

2016 Kia Optima

The active growth of Kia Motors Corporation began in the early 90s. It was during that period that we saw such bestsellers as Sportage, Sephia, Avella, Credos. In 2002, the company produced its 10 millionth car.

The golf class was replenished with a new car, Cerato, and we had excellent sales of the Sefia 2 and Shuma sedans. From August to December 2005, the company's pilots traveled around the world in a Kia Sorento, covering 27 thousand kilometers.

Today Kia Motors Corporation is one of the most promising companies both in our, American and European markets.

Korean economic miracle, forever young Hyundai

Hyundai began its difficult journey not with cars, but with the production of steel, electronics, household appliances, tools and petrochemicals. The automobile division was opened only in 1967 in Seoul.

The president of the company turned to the management of Ford Motors for help, which provided technology, drawings and production lines for the assembly of only three models - the Cortina and Granada sedans, as well as the D750 truck.

The first self-developed car from Hyundai

Hyundai was engaged in the production and sale of these models for the domestic market and Asian countries, but by the beginning of the 80s its own design department was already fully ready.

The young company received a lot of help from Mitsubishi and the design studio of Giorgetto Giugiaro, and the first car of its own design was the Hyundai Poni, which was shown at the 55th Motor Show in Turin, Italy. It was this baby that broke all sales records within the country and entered the world market.

The pony was sold in South America, the Middle East and Africa, and by the end of the 70s the machine entered the European market. After it, the Hyundai Granada sedan became the new best-sellers, and in 1985, the Hyundai Axel was recognized as Canada's best-selling car.

Prestige and comfort from Hyundai Sonata

In 1988, the company began producing its Sonata, which is still popular today. At that time, this was a serious claim to the business class - a six-cylinder 160-horsepower three-liter engine, a small but well-equipped and tightly assembled interior, excellent equipment.

Since then, the Sonata has not lost popularity either in Europe or in America.

Before the beginning of the new century, Hyundai managed to conquer Europe with the XG business sedan, the Hyundai Coupe sports coupe, the Elantra family inexpensive sedan, and in January 1999, one of the most popular crossovers so far, the Hyundai Santa Fe, was introduced.

Today Hyundai is one of the leaders in the world market and thanks to this company, Korean cars are no longer treated with disdain. Moreover, in the most automotive country in the world, the price of the brand’s top models is sometimes higher than that of a BMW or Mercedes.

The Koreans are not going to stop there. The peculiar mentality, monstrous work capacity and talent of engineers have already put Korean car brands on the same level as the giants of Europe, and in some disciplines, they are even beginning to surpass them. This is what it means to give the automotive industry a gentle kick in time.

How to avoid getting scammed when buying! TOP 5 tips

  • Read everything written in large and small print. If you encounter any unclear terms or conditions, call a lawyer you know and get advice.
  • Low cost. Conduct a preliminary market analysis. An excessively low price does not mean anything good.
  • Replacement/addition of the contract without the knowledge of the client. When they want to deceive a car enthusiast, they bring him several copies of the contract for signature. Usually a person carefully reads only the first copy, and signs the rest without looking. This is where the fraud lies: the price of the car turns out to be higher than what was initially announced.
  • Do not hesitate to conduct a technical examination of the vehicle's condition. Invite an independent expert to check the car for hidden breakdowns and defects.
  • Never pay in advance. Pay for a finished product that you have touched with your own hands, examined and tested for functionality.
