As you know from a school physics course, viscosity decreases with increasing temperature. Moreover, when heated from 40 to 100 degrees Celsius, the viscosity drops on average six times, which leads to a decrease in the corresponding thickness of the oil film.

What happens in the engine if you use oil that does not meet the operating conditions and manufacturer’s instructions in terms of its upper indicator?

An oil that is more viscous than necessary forms a thicker film on the surface, which leads to an increased coefficient of friction; accordingly, the oil temperature increases and the thickness of the oil film decreases. After which the opposite effect is observed - the friction coefficient decreases, the oil temperature decreases.

It seems that everything is in order, especially since the increased oil temperature is reduced by the cooling system and the internal combustion engine at medium loads will fall within the required standards defined by the manufacturer.

However, we should not forget that in general the engine will operate (although not by much) at elevated temperatures, which already somewhat reduces its service life.

Everything that has been said, as stated, is typical for medium speeds and light loads.

Let us now consider the option, if you have to urgently, for example, while overtaking, to sharply increase engine speed.

Under extreme load, the oil shear rate increases sharply. Accordingly, the coefficient of friction increases, which leads to a sharp increase in the temperature of the lubricant in the friction zone. And if the engine endures such loads for a short time without relative problems, then more prolonged and frequent loads can lead to overheating of parts and their further destruction.

In simple terms: when using oil with a viscosity higher than that prescribed by the manufacturer, the engine operates at temperatures higher than designed, which leads to faster wear.

Thus, when choosing a lower viscosity index, one should take into account to a greater extent the possibility of starting the engine at subzero temperatures, and the upper one - only based on the manufacturer’s recommendations, falling within the acceptable limits.
