Troubleshooting a real problem

The situation that will be described in this article actually happened to one of the so-called “masters of garage cooperatives.”
We brought the classic and asked to fix the problem associated with the rapid “death” of the battery. Well, then in order.

Let's figure out how to detect a current leak in our car. To do this, we need a multimeter that measures current up to 10A.

We set the measuring device to the DC current measurement mode. Insert the wire plugs into the corresponding sockets on the device.

Finding current leakage in the circuit

This means that, as a result, after 10 hours the battery will lose 25 A/h of charge. For a typical 55Ah car battery, half of the capacity will be used up and eventually run down to zero.

Now we have found out that there is a leak and we need to find out what kind of unauthorized consumer it is that is consuming the energy of our battery. To do this, you need to decide in the direction of your search.

And here we have only one way: open the cover of the fuse box and begin to remove them from their sockets one by one, observing the ammeter readings. When one of the fuses was removed, the energy consumption stopped.

This means that a leak occurs along the line that protects the last removed fuse.

The remaining leakage values ​​of 0.03A are acceptable and can be ignored. To be sure that you have correctly identified the current leakage line, insert this fuse into its place and make sure that the current leakage has resumed.

Cause of current leakage in a car

Based on the markings on the inner cover of the fuse box, we determine that this is fuse R12 for the rear heated glass. But you need to check what other consumers are on the line that this fuse protects.

To do this, take a book on the car, in the “electrical equipment” section we look for a list of fuses and look: 12 – rear window heating element, relay (contacts) for turning on the rear window heating, cigarette lighter, plug socket for a portable lamp.

Let's check visually: there is nothing connected to the plug socket, and there is also nothing in the cigarette lighter. This means that the rear window heater remains.

We turn off the glass heater element itself and good luck - judging by the ammeter readings, the current leakage has stopped.

The relay designation can be found on the inner surface of the fuse box cover. We remove the relay from the socket to check it.

We take a regular dial with sound indication and check. As a result, it turns out that the contacts are closed (and this should not be the case). What could have happened to cause the contacts in the relay to be closed? (Being ahead of the curve, let’s say that the car is not new and was purchased on the secondary market.)

We disassemble the relay and are surprised to find that the insides are wrapped with electrical tape:

They have the same pads, so we can assume that the previous car owner confused these pads with each other.

After which the rear window heating stopped working and he did not understand the problem, pulled out the relay and wrapped the insides with electrical tape, i.e. closed the contacts. The heating started working, but the owner of the car did not take into account that it would work constantly. But apparently after some time he was faced with the problem of constant battery discharge and did not come up with anything smarter than how to remove the voltage supply wire from the heater.

He removed and in this state sold the car to a new unfortunate owner, who, according to him, had already come to the parking lot four times and “lighted” the car from someone else’s car. This is once again confirmation that interfering with a car’s power supply system always entails negative consequences.

How to take measurements?

  • First, turn off the ignition and remove the key from the lock. Close the car doors and open the windows. During the measurement, the battery will be turned off and on. Therefore, the central locking may work. So, just in case, leave access to the salon;
  • check that all current consumers are turned off (pay attention to the light bulbs under the hood, in the trunk, glove compartment, etc.);
  • open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery;
  • after this, switch the multimeter to current measurement mode and connect it to the gap between the negative terminal and the negative terminal of the battery;
  • turn on the multimeter and take readings of the leakage current.

How to check the functionality of the generator?

  • turn off the ignition, remove the key from the lock, turn off all current consumers in the car;
  • connect the multimeter probes to the battery (black to minus, red to plus);
  • switch the multimeter to voltage measurement mode;
  • turn on and measure the voltage (on a fully charged battery the value is 12.6─12.9 volts);
  • then we start the engine, turn on the low beam headlights, the heater, and the heated rear window;
  • again measure the voltage on the battery (ideally, the voltage should be 12.8-13.4 volts. The maximum value is 14.3 volts).

If the voltage on the battery when the engine is running is in the specified range, then the generator is in good condition and will charge the battery.

If the voltage is significantly less, then the problem with a dead battery may be the generator, which simply does not charge it. This could be worn brushes or a faulty diode bridge.

How to check current leakage in a car

Among car owners, there is often a situation where it is impossible to start the car in the morning, although everything was fine in the evening. This can often happen after a long period of inactivity. Sometimes owners themselves forget to turn something off, thereby draining the battery.

But most often the causes of malfunction are dirty circuits, damaged or poor-quality insulation, or improperly installed equipment. Such leaks in the electrical system will drain the battery and, in extreme cases, cause a short circuit and can cause a fire.

If during the day a fire can be detected and extinguished, then at night the car can burn out completely and cause great damage to surrounding property.

Current leakage is a common problem faced by car enthusiasts.

Causes of current leakage

Modern batteries, with their small dimensions and low weight, are reliable to use, they are characterized by low self-discharge and resistance, they have a significant capacity, and a long service life is the norm for them. However, one must take into account the fact that most modern cars have a large number of various electronics: radio, amplifier, subwoofer, alarm, various lighting, DVR and much more.

There can be several reasons for unauthorized current leakage:

  1. Wear and tear of electrical equipment wiring.

During long-term operation of a vehicle, the main cause of current leakage is exposure to unfavorable conditions, both climatic and road, which leads to cracking and chafing of wire insulation, oxidation of device connection sockets and terminal block contacts.

  1. Installation of additional equipment.

The factory wiring of a car is usually quite protected, and a short circuit in it is possible only after significant mechanical damage.

But the wiring of additional equipment has to be laid in a place that, upon a quick inspection, seems quite suitable, but in fact is problematic.

Leakage current detection

You can use a multimeter to detect current leakage. We will need it in ammeter, voltmeter and ohmmeter mode. First, you need to switch the device to ammeter mode, current mode to constant, and set the measurement range to 10–20 A.

Next, you need to use a key to remove the negative terminal of the battery and close the circuit by pressing one ammeter probe to the terminal, and the second to the disconnected wire.

Remember: you cannot connect a device switched on in ammeter mode to both terminals of the battery - there will be a short circuit and the fuse in your device will blow.

Before this, it would be nice to be on the safe side: turn off the ignition, close the doors and open the windows - the central locking may work when the battery is disconnected or connected. Another safety standard is to make sure that the alarm and audio system settings can also be restored.

Leakage Current Ratings

Any car has a minimal leak, but in standby mode it is not so significant: the alarm system normally consumes 20–25 mA, the audio system memory - 3 mA, the injection system controller - 5 mA, the dashboard and central locking unit consume the same amount.

These devices are constantly working: the ECU memory, for example, should not be erased, otherwise it will be retrained, and the alarm system consumes current precisely when the engine is not running. There may well be a small (30–40 mA) leak - this is normal.

However, the maximum permissible current leakage in a car is 50–80 mA (depending on the number and power of additional equipment installed on the car).

Elimination of current leakage

First you need to search for the circuit through which the leak occurs. To do this, remove the fuses from the mounting block one by one and observe the device.

As soon as you find the problem area, the amount of current leakage will decrease significantly. Next, using the electrical diagram of the car, you need to determine what equipment is connected to this fuse and check its functionality.

When faulty equipment is discovered, you need to take it in for repair or buy new one.

If the fuses are checked, and a current leak is still detected by the tester, then the cause of the leak is in an area not protected by fuses: the starter, generator or ignition system.

It is necessary to check by disconnecting the wires from the specified systems.

It is also necessary to take into account that the car may contain self-installed devices, which are often connected to the ignition switch circuit without using standard fuses!

You need to check the wiring: having found a suspicious part of the wiring, you need to look for a short circuit, “ringing” the wires to ensure their integrity. This is done with the same multimeter, but set to ohmmeter mode, since we need to observe the resistance of the wire being studied. The resistance reading will not be much more than zero, and how much will depend on the cross-section of the wire.

Check the generator: to do this, you need to set the multimeter to voltmeter mode and connect it in parallel with the devices. Voltage measurements must be made with the lights on, the sidelights on, and the engine running at high speed. Normally, the voltage should be 13.5–14 V.

With all current consumers involved and a sufficient generator speed, the voltage will normally be at least 12 volts. If contact is broken during testing, the measurements must be taken again: a significant and sudden jump may occur.

Another reason is the alarm system. To diagnose the alarm, you need to set it to security mode and check it after 5 minutes.

During this time, the alarm should go into standby mode and the leak will stop. If this happens, then the alarm is in order; if not, then the alarm is faulty.

In this case, it is better to contact specialists; doing something yourself will be very difficult.

It happens that current leakage occurs when two batteries are used in a car: one of them can absorb the second. To check, you need to disconnect one of the batteries and if the leak stops, then the problem is in the second battery.

Once again I would like to remind you that even if the leakage current slightly exceeds the permissible parameters, this is not normal. In this case, the battery will lose much more of its charge than it can get from the generator, especially during short trips within the city.
