310. Toyota Corolla E120. — DRIVE2
Hi all.
Today I was in the service for a couple of hours, today I was at the Lada dealer in Chelyabinsk, there will be separate posts about this, it turns out that the warranty for the VAZ is not the same as everyone on the blog tells me, but read about it in the next issue of Avtopoisk74 magazine.
And below, again, another “unreliable” Japanese garbage dump .
With low quality materials and paintwork. The car was purchased new, 1 owner, 2006 (I think), 2 colors without putty, one door was removed. I’ll do a mini review, and you can come up with a mileage, and below you will see the real mileage.
According to my feelings, with a good owner, the interior of this Toyota looks like new , the steering wheel is not shaky anywhere, the seat can be a little wiped, but, as a rule, it does not sag.
And you look at the photo and evaluate it. The mileage of this car is 50/50, highway and city. Well, I’ll tell you a little about the car.
Let's start, as usual, with appearance. And the Corolla already looks outdated, a kind of fat cow that you usually need yourself. It looks awkward, ugly, and not technologically advanced.
This is probably why sales of this car were so high in Russia))) But don’t forget that the Corolla was sold in both Hatch and Station Wagon body styles, so the consumer coverage is huge, moreover, we include reliability and durability and we get an excellent car, but first things first.
Motors.
Everything here is simple and crystal clear, the most common engines are 1.4l and 1.6l, we are talking about left-hand drive.
Both engines have a timing chain drive. Both engines have simply a huge resource! I can’t say how much, but with good care, 500,000 km is not the limit. I don’t know a single person who has changed the timing chain on a Toyota. It simply drives along with the engine, and even after 300,000 km and timely oil changes, it doesn’t rattle! In general, Corollas often have crazy mileage. They liked to buy them just to drive a lot. And the original timing chain is the cheapest, not the original is even more expensive. Of course, the 1.6-liter engine is more marketable. These are the prices for spare parts
Checkpoint
There was both a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission. What can we say about them? Reliable, like everything the Japanese produce! There’s nothing more to add. If you keep an eye on both gearboxes, they drive no less than the engines of this car. And it’s quite possible to travel 400,000 km with your original automatic transmission, just change the oil on time. Hydro-automatic.
Clutch, how long does it last? First of all, it depends on you, but 200+ on average, up to 200,000 km, rarely does anyone change it, and of the owners I know, no one has ever changed it. Although this is the case on many foreign cars. How much does it cost?
Toyota 31250-12550 Clutch disc 11 10 days 6 284.21 RUR Aisin DT-124V Clutch disc 5 2 days 1 758.72 RUR Toyota 31210-52051 Clutch basket 4 12 days 7 199.70 RUR Aisin CTX-066 Clutch basket 22 2 days 3,031.15 RUR Toyota 31230-12191 Clutch release bearing 15 3 days 1,526.04 RUR
Aisin BT-112 Release bearing 45 2 days 1,044.83 RUR
I think there is no need to ask what Aisin is, and is it a good original? Their machines are installed on Vaga, Opel, and so on. Half the world goes to their checkpoint. And are their spare parts high quality? Still would. And for the price, it’s quite affordable, if you change it every 300,000 km, even more so.
Chassis
Front MacPherson strut, rear beam . Everything is very simple, easily remotable, and hassle-free. The chassis is also not expensive. Anyone who has personally repaired any VAZ can easily fix this Toyota, I say without exaggeration. I’ll write what was done about the walk here at the bottom of the post.
Salon.
He is simple, not attractive, a bit old. It looks like a car from the last century, but in fact, that’s how it is, because sales of this body in Japan began at the very beginning of the 2000s.
And at that time, it looked good, especially compared to the VAZs that dominated the country’s roads. But at the same time, there is soft plastic on the dashboard. The interior itself is not creaky, even in cold weather it is quiet.
I have already said a little about what a Toyota Corolla is and what quality of materials they have . Here, the owner is a 50-year-old man. Judging by the condition of the interior, you will understand that it is not washed or maintained. Complete set homeless package. Photo below
The seats are not sagging, but have some wear.
There is simply no wear on them. or is it so insignificant that it is simply not visible to the eye
The doors are still fixed to this day, and are still elastic, and not dangling like jelly.
The steering wheel appears to be free of wear. It's just plastic, but it still has relief all around. The braids never stood on it.
The gearshift lever has not yet been polished
The door handle is internal, chrome plated, and the chrome has not fallen off. The handbrake is not scratched, although the autostart is on the car, and the handbrake is pulled back and forth often.
The leather on the gearshift lever is not cracked, burst, or torn
All pictograms are intact and have not been removed.
What mileage did you come up with?
Here's a hint for you. Now is the time to change the front and rear brake discs too. They have quite a bit of wear.
Well, just bolts to illustrate the integrity of the body.
Haven't figured out a mileage yet? Then, for clarity, here is a video of starting an internal combustion engine . In fact, it works quietly; of course, you won’t understand this from the video. But you can hear that it is fully operational and has no extraneous noise. The chain here is original. And also, the engine is cold, it stood all day, that is, a cold start, a warm engine is accordingly even quieter and better. And what is not unimportant is that these Toyota engines start in any frost.
Stop guessing. This is the actual mileage
Are you wondering what they did on this car? And what were the repairs? Replaced at 150,000 km - stabilizer struts and bushings, rear brake hoses
Replaced at 190,000 km - 4 struts, rear silent blocks of front control arms.
That's all . The brake discs are original, their condition is shown in the photo. The clutch is original, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it lasts the same amount of time. The strut mounts are original and intact and do not require replacement. Not a single bearing has been changed. The steering ends are original and do not require replacement. The rack does not knock. Ball joints relatives. The pomegranates and anthers are original.
In general, what needed replacing was replaced. The owner of the car, a car service worker, and if something needs to be replaced, it will be done on the same day. The anthers and bumpers on the racks remain original.
Now you understand why Toyotas are loved in the Urals (and not only) . What is the oil consumption in the internal combustion engine? They don’t top up from replacement to replacement, they drive quietly, and the service is timely.
This particular car will travel another 100,000 km easily, and without investment, well, maybe it will replace the tie rod ends. The car is almost 10 years old.
And if the mileage is a little more, which many will say, then by the years she is an old woman by today's standards, and still does not suck money from the owner, and the years kill the car no less than the mileage.
Is there any saffron milk, rust, or something similar anywhere?
NO, not even a single saffron milk cap. And when I look for a Corolla in the 120 body, and I see worse than here, then I think this: either there is a lot of mileage, or the owner has never looked after the car .
And you can kill everything, but if you intend not to do this, then the car will continue to drive and drive and drive. This is what it means to have one owner for a car.
Liquidity. To be honest, she fell very hard. Since the options for sale, almost all of them are not even remotely similar to what I showed you. And the price for such a condition will be 450,000 rubles. REALLY. And that's the problem.
People are not ready to pay 450 thousand for a car with 200,000 km mileage and 10 years old, and the seller is not ready to give away a good car cheaply. Therefore, one adapts to the other. But it’s just expensive, no one wants to buy, so the mileage is 80,000 km, but based on the condition, no one can determine that it is not 200,000 km.
And with the mileage of “RODNIY” being 80 thousand, it goes for 450,000 rubles, especially since the title has 1 owner.
And a good Corolla drives from 200,000 km to 300,000 km, with almost no investment , or a penny investment, such as a ball joint or ends. And not all used cars can drive like this.
Pros + Reliable as a tank + High maintainability + Engine + gearbox = no problems at all. And there is no need to change the timing belt.
+There are no innovations, those very unnecessary ones, because of which for some reason people buy cars, but there is climate control, multifunction steering wheel, etc. But not in the specific car being described.
Cons -Not beautiful, looks a little old, and is old by the years. -No innovations, those very unnecessary ones, because of which for some reason they buy cars -No longer as liquid as it was before -Not adequately high price on the secondary market.
-It has become very difficult to find such a Toyota... Sometimes it’s impossible... Almost everything has already been killed.
Definitely, I would not buy such a Toyota for myself , and in this condition, even for 400,000 rubles. And even if it had a real mileage of 80,000 km, I still wouldn’t buy it. There are other car options.
Are they really like this with us? In fact, I found a whole one, with one owner, mileage 80,000 km and a service book, 440,000 rubles on the machine. We are talking about a whole, ideal car with left-hand drive and ORIGINAL mileage, confirmed by service books, etc., etc. On mechanics it will cost 400.
Friends bought 3 years ago for 515,000 rubles , the fattest, hatch, 1 household, all in original paint. They still drive to this day and don’t know what repairs are at all. We also bought it at a very high price for the money.
Of course, we have them for 300-380,000 rubles, but their half-dead state is not worth even that money...
Regarding the Camry for this money. The original mileage of these Camrys will be far beyond 300,000 km... And the price, yes, 450,000 for a good one, but you’re just paying for replaced units, or original and dead ones...
Something like this... But in reality a Camry with an HONESTLY NATIVE mileage of 100,000 km will be costs more than 500,000 rubles, but I haven’t seen one like this for a long time... They are basically all repainted 150 times and killed by high mileage...
And here’s what the next body looks like for 450,000-500,000 rubles, which can be found
Inspections of a
Corolla Corolla
Or Auris
In this post below about the Corolla 150 body.
Now realize that the rest that sold was simply even worse . Because Toyota is driven a lot! They are dull for sale, and expensive...
Keep an eye on your cars. Peace for everyone

Weaknesses and problems of the Toyota Corolla E150
The Corolla model has been one of the best-selling in the world since 1974 and to this day. What is the secret of her success? The answer is simple - laconic appearance and traditional Japanese quality. The body is well designed by engineers from a safety point of view, as confirmed by crash test results from the American Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the European Committee (EuroNCAP).
The paintwork is quite thin and scratches and chips actively appear over time. Moreover, places where the damage has reached the metal may bloom if measures are not taken. Although you will hardly be able to find a rotten Corolla in the 150 body.
The most common engine on the Corolla is the 1ZR-FE with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 124 hp. It is considered quite reliable among modern engines. It is worth noting that capitalization cannot be done on it, there are no repair sizes for the pistons, and the block is thin-walled. True, some owners manage to sleeve it.
The timing drive is a chain; its only replacement may be required at 150,000 km. This is complicated by the fact that at the same time there is a need to change the stars, and they are changed only together with the assembled phase shifters, which is not cheap. Also, at such a mileage, the cylinder head gasket between the first and second cylinders often burns out.
Among the minor drawbacks, there may be problems with starting the car when cold.
There are no problems with the transmission if you bought a car with a manual or a classic Aisin automatic. But if you happen to take the car on a robot, then most likely you will not be able to avoid operational problems.
On the one hand, this is the same mechanics, only with electronic control. On the other hand, specifically in the electronic part, problems may await. At best, you can get by with initializing the box.
At worst, repair or replacement of its individual elements, for example, the actuator. In addition, premature wear of the clutch assembly is quite possible.
In terms of the chassis, the weakest points are the steering rack and the intermediate shaft on the steering column. The first problem is solved by using a fluoroplastic sleeve. The second is by cleaning and lubricating the intermediate shaft.
Otherwise, there are no critical problems with the chassis; most of its elements, with moderate use, can travel more than 100,000 km.
Although, approaching this mileage, they may ask to replace the stabilizer bushing.
The salon is pleasant to look at and modern for its age. But the plastic is hard, so crickets are common here. The problem is solved by completely or partially gluing parts of the interior.
The big advantage of this car is that it loses little in value from year to year. But this is also a minus when buying a used car, in terms of the high price for this class.
Another big drawback is the ability to be stolen. In this regard, the car is not much inferior to the older model - Camry.<\p>

Disadvantages and weaknesses of the 10th generation Toyota Corolla
Undoubtedly, Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car not only in Russia, but throughout the world. It’s not for nothing that it was included in the Guinness Book of Records. The reliability of this Toyota model is legendary and for good reason.
The Toyota Corolla really raises few complaints about reliability compared to other similar cars in this class. But it is important to understand that no car is perfect, and the Corolla is no exception.
This model has its own weaknesses, diseases and shortcomings that are important to know about before buying a car.
Weaknesses of the Toyota Corolla E150 body
Now more details...
It is the “robot” in Corollas of this body that causes many problems. Therefore, before purchasing, it is imperative to weigh the pros and cons when choosing a car of this model with a robotic gearbox. “Kicking” and jerking when switching give a signal that the operation of this unit is disrupted.
If you do not pay attention to this, then one of the following situations is possible - the neutral gear will engage and the gear icon will light up on the instrument panel. And accordingly, this means the “end” of the “robot’s” life. And it is important to remember that if the “robot”, like another box, fails, you will have to pay a decent amount of money.
If the choice fell on a car with a “robot”, then it is very necessary to seriously assess the condition of the box.
In general, we can say that the suspension of this Toyota model is difficult to reduce to a deplorable state. But there are weaknesses here too. First of all, these are stabilizer struts and bushings. These are not critical faults that appear in the region of 78-80 thousand km, but it is worth paying attention to them.
One of the common problems with Toyota Corolla is the steering rack bushing. The bushing itself is plastic and wears out quickly, as can be evidenced by knocking on the steering wheel when driving even over minor road unevenness. However, the steering rack itself does not pose any problems and can serve for a long time.
One of the troubles can be caused by the starter bendix. But it is important to remember the peculiarity that this happens en masse only when the mileage approaches one hundred thousand, but there have been cases at 50-60 thousand km. Signs of a bendex malfunction are: the car starts every once in a while or a whirring sound without cranking with the flywheel catching.
This breakdown occurs within 100 thousand km. vehicle mileage. Considering that, according to statistics, the 10th generation Corolla, even the latest years of production, should already “run” in the region of 80-100 thousand km. You need to pay attention to this when purchasing. A characteristic sign that the pump is approaching the end of its life is an unpleasant noise coming from under the hood.
Disadvantages of the 10th generation Toyota Corolla
Conclusion.
In general, we can say that the Toyota Corolla has more positive aspects than weak points and shortcomings.
The main thing before purchasing is to decide which engine and gearbox to buy the car with and to take the check and inspection of the car upon purchase with full responsibility.
Remember that better diagnostics of the car you are buying can be done at specialized car services, which in the future will help you save a decent amount of money to eliminate breakdowns and malfunctions caused by the previous owner.
Dear owners of the tenth generation Toyota Corolla! Write in the comments about the problem areas of your Corolla identified during operation.

All about Toyota Corolla E15
Home... Body models
The popularity of all generations of the Japanese bestseller has not spared the Toyota Corolla E15 model, which has sold millions of copies worldwide. The generation produced after the E15 became the eleventh, and Corolla has been writing its history for almost 50 years.
All about production
The car was produced for 8 years, which indicates a successful design and excellent technical performance. Sales began in 2006, and the car was sold without changes until 2010. After the restyling, Toyota sold the updated modification until 2013, when a generation change occurred.
The E15 marking (according to other sources - E150) is erroneously attributed to a motor of a certain size. This abbreviation indicates the body of the car. At the same time, the designation with the index 140 refers to the modification with a hatchback body, and the sedan received a more adult number.
The production geography of the tenth generation model is quite wide. This is due to the fact that the Toyota concern has traditionally laid high hopes with the Corolla E15.
Among the countries producing cars, in addition to Japan itself, we can name Canada, Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, and South Africa.
The current supplier of the 11th generation Corolla to the European market, the plant in the Turkish city of Sakarya, began operating in a modernized form only on July 1, 2013, so it has nothing to do with the E15.
Overview and technical features
The car was initially designed in accordance with the then new corporate style. The streamlined silhouette gave the large body the appearance of a compact car. What a Corolla should be. At the same time, the car stands out with decent overall dimensions:
- total length – 4540 mm;
- wheelbase – 2600 mm;
- width – 1760 mm;
- height – 1470 mm.
The cabin was quite spacious not only in the front, but the amount of space for rear passengers allows three to comfortably accommodate.
The range of power units was quite wide. In different countries, the E15 model was equipped with 5 gasoline and one diesel engines. The power plants are all four-cylinder, and have the following characteristics:
- Gasoline 1.3 l. Maximum output was 101 hp, and torque was 132 Nm. The engine was officially delivered to Russia.
- Gasoline 1.4 l. A less forced version, which has 4 hp. and 2 Nm weaker than the previous engine.
- Gasoline 1.5 l. Excellent balanced engine with 110 hp. and 140 Nm of torque.
- Gasoline 1.6 l. Also the official engine for Russia, which produces 124 hp. With. maximum power at 157 Nm of torque.
- Gasoline 1.8 l. Toyota's flagship engine for the E15 model has a power of 132 hp. and torque 174 Nm.
- Diesel 2.0 l. Powerful, economical motor with a power of 132 hp. produces 300 Nm of torque. It was not officially supplied to Russia.
The car's fuel consumption for the 1.3 liter engine is 5.8 l/100 km for the combined cycle, and the more powerful 1.6 liter version does not exceed 7 liters.
To work in tandem with the engines, three types of drive transmissions are provided. Two options have been added to the traditional six-speed manual transmission: a 4-speed automatic transmission or a CVT. The variator was mated only to the 1.5 liter engine, so it is very difficult to find it in Russia. It’s better to refrain from buying such a car.
The brakes of the E15 model are highly efficient. All wheels are equipped with brake discs, and the front wheels have ventilated brakes.
The sedan's ground clearance is 150 mm, which is sufficient for a family city car. The suspension design is traditional for a car of this class:
- front suspension - compact MacPherson type;
- rear suspension - torsion beam.
This formula not only characterizes the Corolla suspension from the standpoint of good energy intensity and reliability, but is also an excellent solution from the standpoint of maintainability.
Maintenance and repair
A balanced car is deservedly popular. An extensive network of Toyota service stations and the availability of spare parts make the model inexpensive to operate.
Maintenance (TO-3), if carried out in a timely manner at a service station, costs around 3.2 thousand rubles, excluding the cost of consumables. Considering the need for regular diagnostics, incl. analysis of errors recorded by the control unit, performing maintenance at the service is mandatory.
Some of the typical faults include:
- Problems of electronic systems and components. Numerous sensors, relays and alarm systems may fail.
- External lighting devices. There are failures of the xenon headlight ignition unit.
- Steering. The most problematic unit can be called the steering rack.
To summarize, it should be noted that the car not only has not lost its Japanese reliability, but also looks balanced. On the secondary market, the Corolla model with the E15 index has a good residual value.
A distinctive feature of the car is recognition of achievements in the field of safety. The rigid body and comprehensive passive and active safety measures were rated 5 stars by the Euro NCAP standard for the first time for this Toyota model.

Toyota Corolla 150 - Everything is the same as before
When you start a conversation about the reliability of a car, without noticing it, you compare it with your ideals that formed in your head much earlier. This standard is usually based on reviews, articles read, recommendations from friends, or personal experience. Is it any wonder that more often than not, this very ideal turns out to be one of the representatives of Toyota or Lexus.
Toyota Corolla E150 (2007-2010)
You have probably also noticed that the Toyota Corolla is very slowly losing value in the used car market. This is because the liquidity of a car, as a rule, determines the reliability and maintainability of the vehicle.
Moreover, with each new generation, starting from the fifth, Corolla’s reputation became stronger. However, the tenth generation (E-150), produced since 2006, is far from that same mental ideal. She also has “childhood sores” and car recall campaigns.
What can we say about the ill-fated “robots” that have annoyed even a single owner.
And again, the robot is a stick in the wheel
One of the advantages of a robotic gearbox is the paddle shifters, which can be used to instantly change gears
Exactly. The robotic gearbox is a sore point in many cars. And even Toyota was unable to release a decent unit.
On the Auris hatchback and Corolla E-150 with automatic transmission, instead of the good old hydraulic automatic transmission, they installed the same 5-speed manual as on other versions, but the electronics in the form of a set of electric motors (actuators) and their control unit were responsible for shifting gears.
This innovation of the company undermined the excellent reliability statistics, since the “robot” turned out to be so crude that another article could be written from the list of possible malfunctions with it.
“Jerking” when changing gears, lack of “start assistance” on a hill, a “gear” that lit up on the instrument panel - all this forced a visit to the dealer to replace the clutch, actuators or download new software to the firmware block.
However, for a carefree future, it is better to choose the option with a manual transmission
For technically savvy motorists, operating such a gearbox turns out to be less problematic, since they release the gas when switching, more often move in manual mode, and try not to slip again.
But the majority of motorists were hostile to the need for such accuracy. The manufacturer had no choice but to accommodate.
And finally, in 2008, the old time-tested hydraulic automatic transmission was returned to the Corolla E-150, and after a couple of years, coupled with restyling, Toyota may temporarily or perhaps permanently abandon the ill-fated “robot”.
Owners of versions with a manual transmission know neither sorrow nor misfortune. For them there are only deadlines established by the regulations. Once every 150 thousand km the gearbox oil is changed, and by that time the clutch usually asks for replacement.
“Automatic” is also reliable, but checking the unit for serviceability when buying a used car is still a must.
About the new engine
The most popular 1.6 engine has a couple of “childhood diseases”, but unlike the “robot”, all the symptoms turned out to be curable
Toyota abandoned innovations in the gearbox, but the newly designed 1.6-liter engine (1ZR-FE) seems to have stuck for a long time.
The only thing is that the manufacturer needed to change the design of the water pump (pump), since at low mileage it could become noisy and, in addition to everything, leak. You can change this unit yourself; no special skills are required for this.
Owners of the Corolla E-150 also indicate cases of oil pressure sensor leakage. Fortunately, this usually involves tightening the element.
Another weak point was the generator pulley, which managed to fail at fairly short runs. It’s good that not many such malfunctions have been noted, and problems with the thermostat completely close the table of systematically occurring malfunctions.
Short service intervals (10 thousand km) of the Toyota Corolla also had a beneficial effect on reliability. Without capital costs, the engines can easily “take care” of 350 thousand km. and more. At the same time, they have very few “weak points”, especially in engine 1.
4 (4ZZ-FE), migrated from the engine compartment of the previous generation. In 2008, it was replaced by a 1.33-liter unit, but it was not popular.
Very few of these cars have been sold, so breakdown statistics for them are very scarce.
Toyota Corolla suspension
The suspension of the Corolla E-150 retained the design already familiar from the ninth generation in the form of a front McPherson strut and a rear beam. The chassis, of course, has undergone some changes, but the main thing is that the chassis has not lost its smoothness and reliability.
This car, like its predecessor, is capable of surprising with the endurance of its suspension. Even the stabilizer bushings here “live” for 70-100 thousand km without any problems. What can we say about shock absorbers, which for a careful driver can cover more than 150 thousand km without leaks or breakdowns.
By the way, at this point the front wheel bearings usually become unusable. Fortunately, they don’t take long to change and are inexpensive.
True, the shortcomings of the E-150 surfaced in the steering part, where the owners, when the first knocks appear, first tighten the screw on the splined connection of the steering shaft.
However, if sounds fill the interior space again, then it is unlikely to do without replacing the crosspiece and its connecting elements.
The steering rack itself is trouble-free, but the plastic bushing in its depths sometimes requires replacement.
There is nothing to say about the brakes. Change the pads and discs in a timely manner, and lubricate the caliper guides periodically.
Corolla and electrics
The seat material is quite durable and does not wear out for a long time, although it’s easy to stain this beauty with food or drinks
Unpleasant electrical surprises are very rare in the Corolla. True, there have been cases of a fuse blowing (located in the cabin), which immobilized a whole range of on-board equipment, for example, wipers, a heater fan and electric window drives.
There were also recall campaigns when Toyota replaced the accelerator pedal amplifier for its customers. But compared to the robotic box events, this was not so large-scale.
If the Corolla's interior can be a little disappointing, it is only with crickets, which can easily be eliminated with the help of partial gluing or silicone grease.
The corrosion resistance of the body is excellent. Perhaps only a very deep chip or low-quality repair can cause metal to rust. But polishing the paintwork to restore its appearance is not superfluous.
Scratches and natural abrasions on a car form easily and quickly. You will also have to keep an eye on the front bumper mesh, since they don’t bother to secure it properly at the factory. The same applies to the trunk lid strip.
Do not tear it off when opening or closing the cargo compartment.
Should I buy a Toyota Corolla E-150?
As always, the Toyota interior is well assembled. The maximum that can spoil the mood is quiet “crickets”
Need I remind you that the Toyota Corolla is a reliable and easy-to-use car? I don't think it's worth it.
However, to save nerves and, of course, the budget, we will have to abandon versions with an automated manual transmission, that is, a “robot” that has undermined the brand’s reputation for 3 years in a row.
With proper care, a regular hydraulic automatic will last for many years and will travel with you in one car for more than one hundred thousand km.
After purchasing a used car, you should also not renounce the regulations, but when operating exclusively in urban conditions, reduce the time and mileage for replacing filters and fluids prescribed by the manufacturer by 20-25%. In this way, you will extend the already huge resource inherent in the Toyota Corolla by leaving positive reviews, articles and recommendations about it, based on personal experience.
What to buy instead of Toyota Corolla | Competitor overview
The rivalry in the C-class is one of the most intense. For the same amount of money, instead of a Corolla, you can buy a Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus, Kia Ceed, Kia Cerato and, of course, the founder of the golf segment - Volkswagen Golf. But whether they can compete on equal terms with the Corolla in reliability is a big question.

Test drive Toyota Corolla (generation X rest.) – Driving is not your dream
Indeed, examining this car from different angles, I also thought that without nameplates and inscriptions indicating brand ownership, it is hardly possible to quickly identify this model. Rather, it is precisely the absence of any “outstanding” features that distinguishes her. Just a car...
And the question naturally arose: why is this model so loved in the world? After all, it is the best-selling on the planet!
No more inside than outside
However, in our country it is not only not the most popular, but is not even among the top ten bestsellers. Of course, in our country it is problematic for it to compete with much cheaper products of the Russian automobile industry. But it also loses to some popular foreign cars on our market, and by a significant margin.
We did not set out to conduct a comparative test, but comparisons suggest themselves. The body design of any model of this class and price range has long become bright, catchy, expressive, and daring - the time for “gray and inconspicuous mice” has passed.
Cars differ in original, easily recognizable shapes, details, touches, although they are united by one stylistic trend that is fashionable today - sportiness, swiftness, energy, aggression. Even in a fast-moving stream, you can easily “calculate” a particular car without looking at the nameplates.
Why, sometimes in the dark the taillights alone give away a particular make or model!
The mirrors, no matter how you twist them (in our version they were equipped with both electrical adjustments and folding mechanisms), are not able to “look behind the stern” when reversing onto the road between two cars parked on the right and left. The camera located above the rear license plate helps a lot in such cases.

What about Corolla? Nothing... well, or almost nothing that stands out! Unless the headlight glasses “protrude” to the side, as on other Toyota models: Land Cruiser 200, Highlander, Camry... But that’s actually all.
Otherwise, the Corolla is so “average” that it really gets lost easily... It seems to me that in the previous E120 body, produced from 2000 to 2006, it looked even better than in the current one: a sort of plump and sturdy household-dacha “ box."
By the way, along with the popular sedan, it also had such practical bodies as a hatchback and station wagon. And the current generation is represented only by a sedan. True, there is an Auris hatchback, but it’s still not quite a Corolla...
The trunk, however, is spacious in the sedan: 450 liters. And the parts of the backrest of the rear sofa fold in a ratio of 60:40. But these parts lie on the pillow, forming a noticeable step. And the “access” from the trunk to the cabin is limited on the sides by body reinforcements.
Besides, it's a funny thing! – on the trunk side there are mysterious “locks” on parts of the back of the sofa. If you pull the button for lowering part of the backrest in the cabin, but this very part does not recline, it means that the “lock” is locked, and you need to unlock it by reaching into the depths of the trunk up to your waist.
Why this was invented is unclear. Perhaps as protection against potential intruders, so that they, having entered the cabin, would not be able to get out of it into the trunk? It’s unlikely: for them, opening both the trunk and the interior is a trivial matter.
It would be more logical to install an unlocking mechanism instead of a lock, which would help a child accidentally locked in the trunk to get into the cabin...
It turned out somehow unusual: we started getting to know the car from the trunk. Well, let's move forward now. Let's open the wide door and sit down on the back sofa.
For two adults it’s spacious, for two adults with a child it’s ok, but for three adults it’s perhaps a bit cramped. But the sofa itself is comfortable, you just feel like falling into it (the cushion padding is soft).
With a height of 180 cm, the space from the top of my head to the ceiling and from my knees to the back of the front seat (when sitting “behind me”) was approximately the width of my palm.
The front doors are even wider, and getting behind the wheel will be easy for a person of any size. But the door swings wide, so a shorter-than-average driver may have to reach for the closing handle. The distance to it can be significant!
The 1.6-liter engine “pulls” exactly at its 120-odd “force”, providing the car with nothing more than confident movement in space. The automatic transmission shifts gears in the range from 2500 to 5000 rpm, depending on how hard you press the gas pedal. But there is no point in spinning the crankshaft above the “pickup” zone (about 4000 rpm).
The driver's seat has mechanical adjustments, including a “lift”.
It is, however, unique: the tilt of the pillow is optimal only when the chair is in the lower position, but when it is raised, the front and back parts of the pillow seem to be aligned in height relative to each other, and sitting becomes less comfortable than “on the floor.”
On the other hand, with a low seating position, a short person will completely lose sight of the front “dimension”. And the Corolla’s hood is long and sloping, which creates difficulties when maneuvering, and it does not have front parking sensors.
However, there was no rear parking sensors in our configuration either. But a rear view camera was discovered, the screen of which was located... in the interior mirror. During the day it showed a bright and contrasting picture, but at night it was actively spoiled by the headlights of other cars.
Their bright spots periodically blurred into long vertical stripes (the car's owner's manual says this is normal). In addition, the camera “readings” are not accompanied by sound signals when approaching objects.
But still, this device perfectly helped to reverse between cars parked on the left and right.
The mirrors, no matter how you twist them (in our version they were electrically adjustable and folding mechanisms), are not able to “look behind the stern” when reversing onto the road between two cars parked on the right and left. The camera located above the rear license plate helps a lot in such cases.
Exterior mirrors are of medium size, neither large nor small. The driver will not suffer from significant blind spots, but he should remember that, despite its high worldwide popularity, the Toyota Corolla is not the most respected car on our roads.
By the way, from the inside it seems smaller than classmates that are almost identical in size. And certainly inside, as they say jokingly, it is no bigger than outside. No, the cabin is not cramped - but not spacious either. Let's just say it's average and normal.
But the devices are small and a little “toy-like”. Yes, there is an on-board computer, Russified and logically controlled. But long Russian words often don’t fit into a small display and are therefore shortened, which doesn’t look very good.
And the music center, when playing sound files from a flash drive (the USB connector was originally located under the same lid as the cigarette lighter and ashtray), does not show the names of songs in any language at all. The climate control system is organized logically, there are no complaints about its management and efficiency.
I also liked the two “glove compartments” in the panel, the lower one of which is very spacious...
It was not possible to provoke the car into demolition by sharply throwing it under the gas into a 90-degree turn. Apparently, he didn’t throw it sharply enough: nothing happened, it just seemed like the car slowed down a little and continued accelerating a couple of seconds later. Did the stabilization system work? Alas, it only seemed to me: the Corolla does not have this system.
And yet... there is still a feeling that such an appetizing (by all accounts) Japanese raisin bun offers too few of these same raisins for such a size and such worldwide fame. If anything, I expected more from her.
But maybe the main “raisin” is the driving performance of the Japanese bestseller? Well, let's taste them...
Lope
On the Russian market, Corolla is offered with only two engines - gasoline units with a displacement of 1.3 and 1.6 liters and a power of 101 and 124 liters, respectively. With. There are also two gearboxes: a six-speed manual and just a four-speed automatic, which is offered only with a more powerful engine. That's the whole “sushi set”... Honestly, it’s not enough, Mrs. Bestseller!
Moreover, the units do not demonstrate any outstanding performance. The 1.6-liter engine “pulls” exactly at its 120-odd “power”, providing the approximately 1500-kilogram car (driver + passenger + minimum luggage) with no more than confident movement in space.
The automatic transmission shifts gears in the range from 2500 to 5000 rpm, depending on how hard you press the gas pedal. But above the “catch-up” zone (about 4000 rpm) there is no point in spinning the crankshaft: acceleration does not improve, and the engine begins to beg for mercy with a heart-rending screech.
This “automatic” does not have manual gear selection, although similar gearboxes have existed for a long time.
The car only needs a little bit of acceleration dynamics. According to the technical specifications, our "automatic" version should reach 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds, and this is approximately true. In urban modes, the Corolla is confident and dynamic.
But try to quickly pick up the pace from a steady speed of 80 km/h at low engine speeds. There will be no “spurt”: acceleration to the same “hundred” will take about 8 seconds, and this is already a bit much.
But I would add even more directional stability... but in what units should it be measured? Maybe in millimeters of the depth of the rut, which she finds where the last one was barely visible? Or maybe in centimeters of deviation from the course during acceleration? Three of our testers could not agree on which direction the car most often pulls during a sharp start from a standstill - to the right or to the left.
The trunk volume of the sedan is 450 liters. The parts of the backrest of the rear sofa fold in a ratio of 60:40, but the floor is not flat. On the trunk side there are mysterious “locks” on parts of the back of the sofa. Why this was invented is unclear.
Suspension – medium-high rigidity. According to owners of previous generation cars, the latest modification of the Corolla has softened it significantly. At the front there are the same MacPherson struts, at the rear a torsion beam is used.
The car overcomes “speed bumps” without much “love” (it shakes the whole body), while tilting when cornering.
But in general, it is not afraid of medium and even large irregularities, and this is how the suspension works will captivate almost any driver.
I liked the steering mechanism even more.
It is equipped with an electric booster, and its settings are such that reasonable doubts arise: is it “hydraulics”? When taxiing, you feel the pleasant “heaviness” of the steering wheel, which, by the way, has a rim with a comfortable cross-section, sportily “cut” at the bottom.
This prevents it from resting on the driver's lap. Even with height adjustment (also for reach), the Corolla’s steering wheel is located a little low. The information content of the steering wheel is excellent. The number of revolutions from lock to lock is about 2.7, a very good indicator.

On the eve of winter, the test car was “armed” with powerful “toothy” and “spikey” Dunlop tires. But on the days of the test runs, the toboggan track was not established, except that in some places there were rare icy puddles on the roads. On one of them I tested the ABS system.
To the credit of the Corolla, I must say that the anti-lock worked perfectly: no matter how hard I braked, the car stopped without leaving the straight line. Even such a provocation as braking when only the right wheels were on the ice (the left ones were rolling on the asphalt) did not throw him off course.
The braking dynamics overall left a good impression. It is not difficult to bring the car down sharply, but at the same time it is easy to slow down smoothly, precisely dosing the force. It was not possible to achieve ABS activation on asphalt, including wet ones, even despite studded tires.
I tried to provoke the car into drifting by sharply throwing it under the gas into a 90-degree turn. Apparently, he didn’t throw it sharply enough: nothing happened, it just seemed like the car slowed down a little and continued accelerating a couple of seconds later.
Did the stabilization system work? Alas, it only seemed to me: the Corolla does not have this system (or rather, cars with it are not offered on our market).
Surprisingly, in the instruction manual found in the glove compartment, the operation of the stabilization system is described in great detail, and in Russian. And again you think about equipping competing cars...
We'll chalk it up to age.
Meanwhile, many complaints about the world celebrity named Toyota Corolla disappear by themselves, given that this generation, the tenth in a row, first saw the light... in 2006! True, in 2009 the model underwent restyling and some modernization, in particular, the unsuccessful MultiMode robotic gearbox was replaced by a traditional hydromechanical “automatic”.
At the same time, over the past year or two, other manufacturers have managed to bring to the market many updated machines with a more modern design and rich equipment. Therefore, it is incorrect to compare the Corolla with them.
And in the same 2006, she just looked brighter than others, and if various auto systems were more accessible, she would probably have received them. However, she will soon get everything: the eleventh generation is already on its way.
Its design promises to be much more attractive - but at the same time much more “worldwide”; the Japanese bestseller will become more original and at the same time more modern and “trendy”.
Today, the Toyota Corolla hardly qualifies for the title of “dream” that advertising calls for driving. It is dreamed of mainly by manic advocates of the reliability and practicality of the car, as well as its liquidity on the secondary market.
But the legendary reliability of Toyota has long been in doubt. The other day, information was again leaked to the media about the recall of more than a million cars due to certain problems, even if, according to the company, they were only potential. It’s also a stretch to talk about the practicality of a sedan car. All that remains is the opportunity to profitably sell the car after several years of operation.
But here’s the catch: to paraphrase the words of a famous cartoon character, before you sell something, you need to buy something. But you can buy a Toyota Corolla in the configuration that we tested for at least 870 thousand rubles. This is very expensive for this level of equipment and technical data!
Let's add to this amount the cost of insurance (the cost of a comprehensive insurance policy for a Corolla is incredibly high due to the fact that the car is popular with inexperienced young drivers, as well as with car thieves), expensive service (maintenance is carried out after 10 thousand km).
km, which is one and a half times more often than other cars in this class), as well as potential fuel costs.
During the test, it turned out that gasoline consumption in the combined cycle was approximately twice the rated value - about 13 liters per 100 km with the declared 7.2...
Perhaps, this car occupies high places in popularity ratings due to its averageness, so to speak, “wins on points.” It has no pronounced “highlights” either in equipment, or in external or internal design, or in technical characteristics and driving performance - but there are no obvious failures, punctures or shortcomings either!
No matter what you look at, you can get used to all the shortcomings and come to terms with them all.
In just a few days of testing, my back got used to the back of the not-so-comfortable driver’s seat, my hands learned to “automatically” find non-illuminated control buttons for various systems, when I engaged reverse gear, my gaze began to instantly “switch” to the image from the rear view camera in the interior mirror, and the right foot is accustomed to “working” with the right and left pedals in strict accordance with the engine parameters and brake system settings. Is it worth dreaming big? Decide for yourself.
