Six proven ways to fix a dent on a car body
There are several ways to straighten dents, based on the use of different tools. In this case, these works are carried out according to one principle, which is that the body in the damaged area is subjected to physical impact. This article discusses the main methods for leveling a car body.
Mechanical alignment from inside
Using this technology allows you to smooth out defects without painting. In this case, vacuum hoods and levers are used. Aligning dents on a car body in this way is based on a pressure difference.
The work consists of placing a lever of suitable size, that is, reaching the defect, into the technological hole of the car body and pressing on it until the damaged area returns to its original state.
The return of the material to its original state is usually accompanied by a click.
If the dent is located close to the body opening, then pressure can be applied to it from the inside without using a lever. However, the car body is not always damaged near the technological holes, and it can be difficult to get to the defect from the inside. If this is not possible, damage can be leveled using one of the methods discussed below.
Correcting dents with a magnet
It should be noted that this technology is suitable for straightening only minor damage. During operation, the magnet is moved along the surface of the damaged area from the edges to the center of the dent, pulling it towards itself. To avoid damaging the paintwork, place a soft cloth under the magnet.
External alignment using adhesive technology
This method is also called vacuum, and the essence of this technology is to pull out the dent with a piston attached to the damaged area of the body with glue.
However, it is also possible to use non-professional devices represented by suction cups. The applicator is secured with glue to the damaged area of the body.
Once it has dried, the center point of the dent is pulled out using a mini-lifter. The suction cup is used according to the same principle.
In general, the adhesive method of straightening dents is considered one of the simplest and fastest.
Correction of a defect by thermal treatment
The method under consideration involves the use of a hair dryer and a can of compressed air. You will also need protective equipment in the form of glasses and gloves, since the work is carried out at temperatures from 300 to 650 ° C.

How to remove dents without painting yourself?
Unfortunately, most motorists encounter such unpleasant situations, after which small dents remain on the car.
But in order to remove even an almost imperceptible dent, you have to leave your iron friend at a service station for several days, which is not always convenient.
Fortunately, in such situations it is possible not to go to a service station and do it yourself, namely, use the technique of removing dents without painting yourself.
Preparatory stage
Before you begin the procedure for removing damage, you need to assess its complexity and, depending on the latter, make a choice in favor of one of the possible methods of leveling dents: fast, reliable, the most economical or the most effective.
Previously, it was always necessary to carry out straightening work when removing damage from the surface of the car (straightening the car body with your own hands), after which you had to paint the car (how to paint a car yourself). Some motorists and service stations still do this, but there is a method (and more than one!) that allows you to leave the paintwork intact, which means saving a significant part of your money.
Possible gentle methods for removing dents without painting yourself
Any gentle method of manually leveling dents will require special tools.
It is most convenient to purchase a special set of tools designed to remove dents without subsequent paintwork.
All these tools are shaped like sticks, levers and hooks, and also have different lengths and shapes, thanks to which they allow you to reach hard-to-reach parts of the car (some parts of the body, door pillars).
To level the surface of a car part using such a special tool. kit, you just need to insert a suitable tool into the technological hole in the body and, with little effort, level the dent from the inside.
For slightly deeper dents, it is better to do things differently and use a vacuum extractor. The latter should simply be applied to the damage and the metal itself, under the influence of pressure changes, will restore its old shape.
In addition to drawing, the metal is well shaped by applicators, which are placed on the damage using special glue. Then, with a little effort, the dent is pulled out, the applicator is removed, and the remaining adhesive is removed from the body. By the way, this is done quite easily.
Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) Technology
All of the above elements together form a PDR complex, which means removing damage without painting.
Its use became possible thanks to innovations introduced by car manufacturers, who began to use paint coatings based on polymer compounds that make the paint layer on the car more durable and flexible, which allows it to remain intact even when severe damage is caused. In addition, manufacturers began to use thinner metal, which also has a positive effect on the process of straightening out dents.
When should PDR technology not be used?
It is impossible to apply the technique of leveling body damage without painting:
- if the car's paintwork is damaged;
- with very severe deformation of the body;
- if the “age” of the car is more than 15 years;
- with poor quality of the paint layer;
- if technologies with gross violations were used during the previous body alignment.
In addition, it is almost impossible to remove dents from car door sills without painting yourself; car roof pillars and the edges of the trunk parts.
Recommendations from experts
Experts advise that before using the technique of leveling damage without painting yourself, practice on unnecessary parts of the car body. During these trainings, you should learn to catch certain points on the metal that need to be pressed while following the technique of increasing and decreasing pressure. The main thing is not to overtighten the metal, otherwise you risk ruining the paint.

Secrets of the masters - all the ways to straighten a dent without painting
Car dents are a problem that affects even the most careful drivers. It is one of the most common reasons why a car is sent for repairs. Damage to the vehicle body occurs due to the fault of:
- collisions with various objects;
- accidents;
- burglary attempts or acts of vandalism.
Straightening out dents on a car without painting it at a body shop is an expensive task. But it can be done without the help of specialists in a shorter period. To do this, you need to know the system for removing dents on a car and have the necessary tools.
Body inspection before repair
Before starting body repairs, it is necessary to determine where and to what extent the dents are located. It is recommended to carry out the inspection during the daytime, or in bright light. Otherwise, you may accidentally miss small dents. The size of the defect determines how suitable the technology for restoring the body without painting is.
The likelihood of such a problem occurring in cars manufactured in the last twenty years is minimal. This is due to the use of paint, which contains polymer components.
Thanks to their presence, when damage occurs, the paint does not crack, but stretches along with the metal surface on which it was applied. If the car is of an older generation, it will not be possible to repair the damage without painting.
To solve the problem, you can use classic straightening, or repaint small parts.
Mechanical removal from inside
This method of leveling body dents without painting is usually used within a car service center as it requires certain skills. Mechanical repair of damage from inside the car reduces the risk of paintwork damage to a minimum and in this case painting is not required.
Extrusion is carried out due to force on a specific area. To straighten the dent, the tool is inserted under the car body through the nearest technical hole. After this, it is used to apply pressure to the inner surface until a click is heard. It is an indicator that the problem has been solved.
Removal using PDR method
This DIY method of removing dents without painting is on the list of the most difficult, and in most cases it is used in a car service center.
Applying the PDR method independently is accompanied by difficulties that only a professional can solve. The system is used if more complex damage needs to be eliminated.
Pulling is carried out by applying force to parts of the body from the inside.
Additionally, removal of the inner lining and dismantling of some components will be required. Dents are removed using a set of hooks. These instruments come in a variety of shapes, lengths and bending angles.
The task is carried out in stages:
- the working surface is cleaned (if necessary, remove interfering parts);
- the stress on the metal in damaged areas is reduced;
- the damaged surface is heated using a hair dryer to a temperature of at least 40 degrees Celsius and stretches some places without the need for additional straightening;
- the dent is tapped along the edges;
- by applying pressure to the inner surface, the dent on the car is smoothed out without painting.
External leveling with special equipment
External straightening of dents without painting is recommended in cases where it is not possible to perform this task from the inside for certain reasons. Elimination of defects in the damaged area is carried out using:
- adhesive applicators;
- glue;
- vacuum suction cup;
- fluoroplastic bumpers;
- mini-lifter.
Adhesive applicators must be secured in the damaged areas and not touched while drying. The mini-lifter allows you to pull out the dent by acting on the central point. The final stage is removing the glue. As a result, painting the damaged area is not required.
Other tools can be used as an analogue. This method is performed in a similar way, but a piston is attached to the center of the damage, with which it is pulled out. The principle is as simple as the previous method.
Correction with a magnet
Repairing dents on a car without the need for painting using a magnet is one of the easiest ways to restore the surface of parts.
For pulling, a magnet is used, which can be purchased at an auto parts store. It has enough strength to straighten small dents. This method removes shallow dents.
If the defects are more serious, use another method.
Leveling damage with a magnet on a car is carried out in three stages:
- a cloth is placed between the magnet and the damaged surface to protect the paintwork;
- the magnet is attracted to the edges of the dent and gradually pulls back;
- the tool must be moved around the circle of damage until its central part is reached.

Removing dents on a car with your own hands!
Is it possible to remove dents without painting yourself? Affirmative - yes! But you need to approach the issue thoroughly: study the theoretical foundations of paintless dent straightening, buy a tool and spend a lot of time watching videos of damage repair by PDR specialists.
What body damage can be removed?
The difficulty of repairing dents without painting is primarily determined by the profile and location of the defects. Damage classification:
- light - small dents on surfaces without complex body bends, holes, edges. In this case, for removal there is good access to the inside of the element; the damage is not located where the amplifier adjoins the body panel. An important characteristic is a slight rise in the metal near the deflection zone of the plane. At the moment of formation of a dent, not only the metal is pressed in, but also the formation of a hill at the point where the plane transitions into the dent. The nature of the metal lifting zone depends on the shape of the body element at the point of deformation, as well as the strength and direction of the impact. As practice shows, if the size of a body defect does not exceed a 5-ruble coin, the elevation is not noticeable at all;
- medium complexity - damage in areas of edges, reinforcements of body panels, areas that are difficult or even impossible to reach through technological holes, volumetric damage with small creases;
- complex body damage – volumetric damage of complex shape (a large number of sharp creases).
TOOL
What equipment and tools are needed for professional paintless dent removal:
- light source with articulated mount;
- a screen with horizontal markings used to detect glare from a directional light source. It is this device that allows you to notice and remove even the slightest damage without painting;
- hooks for removing dents from the inside of the body panel. The purpose of each hook is determined by the shape of the tip, the bending profile and the length of the base;
- punches. Used to relieve metal tension in areas of high spots and punctures. The punch has a plastic conical tip, which allows you to distribute the force over a large area and not scratch the paintwork when removing a dent;
- a set for working with an adhesive system (gun, adhesive composition, reverse hammer, fungi of various profiles and sizes);
- rubber-plastic hammer;
- ironers. Used for leveling planes, tapping hills, pricking;
- construction hair dryer;
- stops that fix the hood, doors, and trunk in a position convenient for removing dents;
- power pillows. By design, the pads are designed to open door frames and penetrate the car, but in PDR technology they are used to remove bulk dents from the inside of the body;
- portable brackets that allow you to create a support point for hooks;
- tool for disassembling car interior trim.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL SET
What tools are used for paintless dent removal with your own hands:
- a set for working with an adhesive system, which can include not only a reverse hammer for straightening dents, but also a so-called lifter;
- Pops a Dent, which will also require a glue gun, “fungi” and glue;
- punch and rubber-plastic hammer.
The decisive factor for choosing this particular tool is its relative cheapness. The desire to repair a dent yourself, preventing local painting, is commendable, but the game is not worth the candle if you buy a high-quality tool for removal.
For example, the high price of professional hooks is due to the fact that they have excellent elasticity despite their small thickness. This is extremely important, since removing a dent located at a distance requires considerable effort. But often the amplitude of movement of the handle is extremely limited.
Under similar conditions, a low-quality hook will simply bend, leaving the body defect in the same condition.
PDR BASICS
Tips to help remove a dent on a car body.
- Before starting work, clean the body surface from dirt and dust. Before using adhesive fungi, degrease the deformation area. If the car has factory paint or has been repainted with high quality, you can use a small amount of 646 solvent. In other cases, it is better to use alcohol.
- If there are hills near the deformation site, the process of removing dents should begin by removing the residual metal stress in these places. This is done with a hammer and a punch or a trowel and a hammer.
- The metal tool used must be without jagged or cutting edges. If you, like one of the masters in the video, use a regular spatula as a smoothing iron, apply it only flat (otherwise you risk scratching the car’s paintwork with the edges).
- Squeezing out the damage from the inside, gradually move from the edges to the center of the recess. If you immediately press into the deepest point, you risk puncturing and even worsening the damage.
- Warm the repair area during the dent removal process. Under the influence of temperature, the metal becomes softer, so it can more easily take on a given shape.
REPAIR WITH FUNGHS
Even before attempting to remove a dent with your own hands, we recommend purchasing several adhesive pins from different manufacturers. Not all compounds are well suited for removing dents from a car body.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWNCnvE_tLc
The location of the fungus should correspond to the deepest point of damage. This does not mean that in the case of a large dent you need to put a large mushroom directly in the center. We move from the edges to the center, but in each zone the fungus planting site should correspond to the deepest point.
You need to pull out the dent using a reverse hammer at the moment when the glue has already dried, but has not yet fully polymerized. At a glue temperature of about 35-40º, straightening body creases will be most effective.
Movements with a reverse hammer should be of little force. If you pull too hard, a bump may form in place of the dent.
ERRORS DURING TRAINING
Lack of haste is a rule that will allow you, even in the absence of experience, not to make punctures, unnecessary sharp bends, scratches and bumps.
Please note that behind the feeling of simplicity of the process that arises after watching a video of dent removal without painting by professional craftsmen lies enormous patience and attention to detail.
Heat the repair area, tap the metal stress zones, do not exceed the force when working with a punch or reverse hammer, and you are guaranteed to be able to remove dents on your car with your own hands.

Do-it-yourself straightening of dents on a car body
As offensive as it may be, no one can do without “kicking” the car at least a little in their entire life. Even professionals.
Snow falling from the cornice, not entirely sober citizens who chose the “swallow” as a fulcrum, and their own sloppiness or oversight leave marks on the varnished sides of the car.
For the most part, they are slightly bruised; even the paint is not peeling off.
Therefore, most owners are in no particular hurry to rush to the nearest tinsmith. In addition, the insignificance of the damage encourages you to try to fix everything yourself. So let's talk about this - about how to straighten a dent on a car with your own hands.
What you need to know
- Repairing dents on a car without painting is possible;
- it is impossible to implement it completely without investments;
- you will have to show angelic patience and devilish perseverance;
- If everything works out for you, you can open your own workshop, you won’t be left without clients.
Attachments
At the mastering stage, dent repair will not require very rich tools:
- straightening hammer with shock-absorbing strikers – 300 rubles;
- gas burner Super-Ego R355 – 1.8 thousand rubles;
- portable gas cylinder – 100 rubles;
- stainless steel trowel – 300 rubles;
- hot glue gun – 600 rubles.
In general, your expenses will not exceed 3.5 thousand rubles. If luck inspires you, then buy an inexpensive (3 thousand rubles) set of straightening tools Force F-911M1. You can work with it at a professional level and repair not only your car.
Features of the material
Despite the fact that body straightening masters are popularly called “tinsmiths,” they work with much thicker material. The thickness of body parts of the Soviet automobile industry was 0.9-1 mm, now the cunning Chinese put it at 0.55 mm, but on average it is 0.75 mm.
Dent on the rear left fender
In order for such a material to be bent manually, it must be heated at least a little. The paintwork can withstand temperatures up to 80 and even 90 degrees. For this you will need a torch from the list of tools.
It is better than a hair dryer in that you can localize the heating zone. However, before starting work, it is necessary to practice on some automobile frame to determine the optimal flame intensity and exposure time.
Otherwise, straightening dents with your own hands will smoothly flow into a full-fledged body repair or purchase of a new car.
A dent on a car is a place where the metal has not only undergone deformation, but has changed its thickness. In the deepest place it is smaller than at the edges. Sometimes so much so that the material ruptures.
Such cases can be treated, but considerable professionalism is required. When correcting a defect, you need to drive the metal from the edges to the center.
As a result, the direction of action of the deformation force will change to the opposite and the dent will straighten out.
Repair methods
Straightening dents is carried out not only from the inside, although this seems the most logical, but also from the outside. The technology of work largely depends on the area of damage and its location.
Firecrackers
This is what tinsmiths call dents that are large (up to several square decimeters) in area, but small (no more than a centimeter) in depth, with very gentle slopes. The metal in them has hardly changed in thickness. They got their name because straightening is accompanied by a clap.
The larger the area of the cracker, the easier it is to straighten. Although this can be explained simply: the lever arm of the force - the distance from the center of the dent to the edge - is large. Sometimes it is enough to press it from the inside with your palm. Often it is a combined damage - at the point of application of force there remains a hole, which will have to be straightened separately.
Removing small dents with an impact tool
Fixing from the inside is the main way to repair such dents. To do this, you will have to remove the ceiling or door trim - the usual place for firecrackers to appear.
If it does not lend itself to hand force, then, for example, a volleyball chamber can be placed in the technological cavity. A pressure of a couple of atmospheres will be quite enough.
Small - you can still touch the metal with your hand - heating the edges will help speed up the process.
Medium dents
It is often not possible to straighten such a problem from the inside. For example, on a wing, the cavity of which is blocked by spars. If it is flat, without a break, then heating and hammering it through a trowel will help fix it.
- Heat the edges of the dent so that your hand feels noticeably hot when touched.
- Apply the trowel, making sure that it lies flat and does not touch any part of the body's relief with its edge. Tap the dent in a circle with light blows.
- Constantly control the heating (cooling is no better than overheating), don’t rush anywhere and persistently hammer the dent in a tapering spiral.
The construction trowel successfully replaces the professional tool “trowel”. Its handle is raised up, does not move around the body and does not interfere with the work of the hammer. It should be made of stainless steel, and the lower, working surface should be polished so as not to scratch the paint. During work, you must constantly wipe it with a cloth so that not the slightest speck remains on it, and degrease it.
Removing dents on the body surface using heating
There is a very exotic straightening method based on the use of temperature contrast. For it you need to prepare a can of carbon dioxide. These are used, for example, to charge airsoft weapons.
- Heat the dent in a spiral from the edges to the center.
- You spray carbon dioxide using the same principle.
- As the frost disappears, the metal straightens, subject to deformation forces arising from temperature changes.
Leveling in this manner may damage the paintwork. And the older the car, the higher the likelihood of such an outcome.
Small dents
Damage with a diameter of up to 1.5 centimeters can only be pulled out, since they are smaller than the hammer head and aiming along the edge is very problematic. Pulling is carried out with a bolt or screw with a head of suitable diameter and shape. It needs to be sanded to the desired configuration and polished.
The work area is degreased (as is the bolt head), after which the glue gun is used. After gluing the bolt, add glue on top, for reliability. The thread will help secure something like a handle or eyelet.
The bolt is pulled behind them with whatever is available. But this must be done carefully, in several stages, constantly monitoring the process. The bolt may come off.
Remove the adhesive with a solvent and repeat the process until the dent is straightened.
For such work, there is a professional tool - a set of polymer fungi of different sizes and shapes, as well as strikers. The firing pin consists of two parts - something like a bolt, the lower part of which hooks onto the figured protrusion of the fungus, and a massive bushing that slides along the stem. At the end of the striker there is a wide protrusion against which the bushing strikes.
Straightening a car body is an art. The master must feel the material and be able to predict its behavior. The skill is formed by long hours of training. Don't be afraid to put your hands in, though. The value of having such a skill will pay for all the costs. We advise you to initially practice on some car frame.

If the paint layer has not been damaged due to deformation of the car body, dents can be repaired without painting. Quite high-quality paint and varnish materials are now being produced. Special technologies and special admixtures are used, which ensures the durability and strength of the coating.
Dent repair without painting on the trunk lid of an Audi Allroad
Advantages of paintless dent removal:
- appearance in most cases is completely restored;
- increased process speed;
- body treatment in a gentle mode;
- a fairly cheap way to eliminate defects.
Process Features
Paintless dent repair helps car owners save significantly on repairs. Paintless repairs also take significantly less time and labor.
Minor dents, if you have the necessary skills and tools, can even be made independently. If you are not confident in your own abilities, it is better to turn to specialists.
It will take an average of 15 minutes to two hours for a technician to repair a small damage at a service station.
There are several options for such straightening:
Removing dents without painting, vacuum straightening
The glue method is more modern. It is used to correct the body in places with limited access. The good old leveling method, proven over the years, allows you to level dents from the inside using special tools. One of the most effective methods to rid a car part of dents is straightening.
Sometimes it is impossible to level out dents without a painting procedure:
- if the paintwork is damaged;
- severe deformation of the body;
- poor-quality paint layer;
- the car is over 15 years old.
To pull out dents without painting, you can use both improvised means and professional tools. The latter are expensive and are already sold in sets. If you are not seriously involved in straightening cars, then it is more advisable to use improvised means.
Removing dents from the inside mechanically
The technology for straightening dents without applying paint is used in cases where it is problematic or impossible to remove them from the outside with conventional tools.
The principle by which dents are removed mechanically is a pressure difference. To remove minor damage, use vacuum hoods.
For other mechanical straightening work, various levers are used, as well as fluoroplastic bumpers.
Technology for local body repair of dents without painting
When performing mechanical alignment, you should place the desired lever in the technological hole in the car body, trying to place its end as close as possible to the defect. Next, using gentle pressing movements, level the surface to its original state. When straightened, a slight click should be heard.
External leveling with special equipment
It happens that the dent is in a place where it is impossible to access from the inside. You can use this method by using the adhesive technique. To do this, you need to glue a special piston to the surface and simply pull out the dent.
More often, another method is used. It will require glue and adhesive applicators, which should be fixed to the surface of the dent. Next, everything is done in exactly the same way as with the help of pistons. Glue residues are easily removed from the surface of the car body after the alignment procedure is completed.
Correction with a magnet
The method is very simple. Magnetic dent repair is performed by pulling the damage from the edge towards the center. The tension force should be directed towards yourself. As a result, the dent gradually levels out. Do not forget to place a rag or other support under the magnet so that as a result of work you do not scratch the varnish or paint.
A device for removing, eliminating and repairing dents on cars without painting
Removal using a hair dryer
A high-temperature method, when using which you should take care of your own safety and wear goggles and protective gloves. To work, you will need a hair dryer and a can containing compressed air.
The principle of this method is the temperature difference on the surface of the car. First, it is heated with a hairdryer to the desired temperature, and then cooled using a can containing compressed air.
When using a hairdryer, heating is available from plus 300 to 650 degrees Celsius, and using a spray can, cooling to minus 78 degrees is available.
Depending on the shape of the dent on the “iron horse” part, select the locations of the impact points. For large damage there should be several of them.
With a round shape, the work points are located along the radius of the damage, with an oval shape - along its shortest side.
If removing dents on a car without painting using a hairdryer could not be completely straightened, complete the work using the tapping method.
Percussion
The method is used when the dent on a car is large. To carry out repairs using this method, rubberized mallets and hooks of various shapes will come to our aid. The job description is in the title itself.
To level out a dent using tapping, you need to tap the damaged area from the inside. If the dent is in a hard-to-reach place, hooks are used.
After completion of the work, polish the surface.

Recommendations from the author
Before starting any repair work, you should realistically assess your capabilities. If you suddenly doubt that you can perform high-quality dent removal with your own hands, it is better to seek help from specialized service centers, where trained technicians will help you repair your car quickly and, most importantly, efficiently.
Before starting work, any repair technology that has been chosen should be tested on parts that are not needed.
To ensure that your car is restored at the proper level and does not create even more problems, carefully read the instructions and review the photos and videos.
Following simple instructions and recommendations will allow you to successfully complete the job of straightening dents without painting and enjoy driving your repaired car.

How to remove a dent on a car with your own hands, video of removing dents without painting
Most car owners care about the appearance of their car, because a well-maintained car speaks about the character of its owner and can increase the owner’s prestige.
During the operation of the vehicle, various types of defects appear on the body: small dents and scratches. If they are not addressed promptly, they can develop into more serious problems.
The body may show signs of rust and corrosion. In the future, such defects result in expensive body repairs.
Trunk before and after repair
Small scratches can be removed by polishing the body, discussed in more detail in this article. But you can deal with dents in different ways. It all depends on the nature of the defect.
Dents can be dealt with in different ways, it all depends on the nature of the defect
Types of dents on the body: is it easy to remove it yourself?
There are two types of dents:
- The dents are shallow. They often appear on the fenders and bumper. Metal or plastic bends by 2–4 millimeters. They occur in the event of a minor accident or careless collision with a small obstacle. Paint and varnish are usually not affected. Such dents can be removed without painting the element. This method has long been used in European car repair services. Today, throughout our country, this method is gaining popularity. In addition, almost every car owner can do the removal of small dents without painting with his own hands.
- More serious dents will most likely not be removed without painting. Metal that has bent by more than 8–10 mm cannot be returned to its original state without straightening. Typically, such dents are accompanied by cracking of the paintwork; the metal in such places is “chewed” and greatly stretched. Repairing body parts in this case will cost much more.
Removing dents without painting the body yourself
You can remove shallow dents on the body yourself. Today several methods are known. Let's look at each of them in more detail.
The first method is based on the ability of the metal to return to its original shape when the deformed area is heated and sharply cooled. To remove the defect, you will need an industrial hair dryer (you can use a regular hair dryer) and a can of carbon dioxide. First of all, we warm up the place on the body where there is a dent.
You should heat it carefully so as not to burn the paint and varnish on the body. Then we direct gas from the can, which sharply lowers the temperature of the heated area. It is necessary to direct the gas stream from the edges to the center of the defect. After this procedure, the metal should take the shape it was given during stamping.
Removing one dent will take up to 3 minutes.
Method of heating and sudden cooling of metal
The second method requires some skills. The dent is removed by tapping the defect from the inside.
This procedure will be difficult to perform, since there is not always access to the deformed area.
Using the second method is not recommended for beginners, because as a result of impacts on the body, new dents can be made, and then you will definitely have to contact a body repair specialist.
There is also a third method for removing dents without painting. In this case, a semi-professional Pops-a-Dent tool is used.
Procedure for eliminating body defects using Pops-a-Dent
- A small shoe is attached to the body in the center of the dent. It is fixed with a special glue that comes with the tool.
- A threaded pin is screwed into the shoe, and a small plastic bridge is put on it.
The bases of the bridge rest against the body of the car.
- A nut is screwed onto the stud. By pulling it up, the shoe pulls the metal outward.
After removing the dent, the shoe is removed with a special spatula.
It is also included with this device.
Pops-a-Dent body repair kit
Note that the third option does not always work. In general, the driver performs all actions to eliminate body defects with his own hands at his own peril and risk. If you are not confident in your abilities, and still have some money left for a rainy day, it is better not to experiment and trust the professionals.
All of these methods are suitable for small dents. It is better to entrust deeper ones to professionals. There are now quite a lot of workshops open that use paint-free dent removal technologies.
They have a special tool at their disposal to level out deeper dents from the inside. It should be noted that body repairs without painting take much less time and do not require dismantling of body parts.
In addition, this type of repair is cheaper.

As the vehicle operates, defects of various types gradually appear on its body. Damage in the form of small dents is very common. Due to their relatively high prevalence, the issue of their elimination is relevant. This article discusses do-it-yourself dent removal technologies without painting.
To remove a dent yourself without painting, you can use both simple tools and highly specialized kits.
The first way to straighten dents is to do it yourself at home, while straightening them using special tools is considered a more professional repair, since dents are removed in a similar way in car service centers and body repair shops.
Of course, you can go there, but doing it yourself without painting will help save money and time. In addition, this is one of the simplest body repair operations, especially taking into account the many photo and video examples on the Internet. Repair methods are discussed below.
This technology was created to straighten dents without painting, which are difficult to straighten from the outside with simple tools. In this case, repairs are carried out using levers, vacuum hoods (to remove small defects), as well as fluoroplastic bumpers. The basic principle on which mechanical alignment of dents from the inside is based is differential pressure.
The repair consists of placing a lever in the technological hole of the body, the size of which allows one of its ends to be positioned as close as possible to the defect. Then, by applying force to the lever in the form of light pressing movements, the part is returned to its original state, returning the crumpled section of metal to its original place. In other words, removing a dent involves pressing on the defective area. Straightening is accompanied by a slight click.
This technology is used when there is no access to the damaged area of the body from the inside. To perform dent removal using this method, you will need materials such as adhesive applicators and glue.
The applicators are fixed to the damaged area of the body with glue and wait until completely dry. Then you need to pull out the center point of the dent with a mini-lifter.
Upon completion of work, the adhesive is simply removed from the body.
There is an alternative technology to the use of adhesive applicators, called adhesive technology. In this case, a special piston is used. It is glued to the defective area to pull out the dent.
Based on the same principle, you can fix a dent without painting using non-professional tools such as a suction cup and hot glue. The suction cup must be selected according to the size of the dent. It is fixed with hot glue to the damaged area of the body and the dent is straightened when it dries.
As is clear, for such work you will need a magnet, as well as rags. The essence of straightening without painting with your own hands is to move the magnet from the edges of the dent to the center, combined with pulling it towards you. Thus, the dent is gradually leveled out.
A soft rag is used to avoid the formation of scratches during the process of straightening the dent, and it is placed under the magnet.
This method involves using a hair dryer and a can of compressed air as tools. It is also advisable to purchase protective equipment in the form of glasses and gloves. The use of such safety measures is due to the fact that this method is based on high temperature exposure.
The damaged area of the body is blown with a hairdryer. It must be taken into account that it heats the air to 300-650 °C. The heated dent is then immediately cooled with a can of compressed air containing fluorocarbon propellants at -78°C.
Due to such a sharp temperature change, the dent is leveled out. If the dent is large enough, repairs are carried out at 2-3 points within its boundaries.
They are selected depending on the shape of the defect: for round - along the radius, for oval - along the narrow side.
If it is not possible to straighten the dent completely, the remaining areas are tapped with a rubberized mallet, although in some cases this is used as a separate method.
This technology is applicable for removing large dents. To properly perform the correction, you will need several rubberized mallets and hooks of various shapes and sizes.
Typically, repairs involve tapping the damaged area from the reverse side. If this is not possible, use hooks. The final stage is polishing.
To remove a dent in this way, use a specialized repair kit. It includes a plastic staple with two nickels on the ends, glue, a glue stick, an electric gun, nozzles and a thumb.
The center of the dent and the rubber nozzle are degreased, and glue is applied to the latter using a heat gun. Then the nozzle is glued in a clockwise circular motion to the center of the dent.
After 2-3 minutes, a plastic bracket is installed on the nozzle. The dent is straightened by screwing the staple onto the nozzle using a thumbscrew.
After the repair is completed, the device is left for another 5 minutes.
