    The other option, the 1.5-liter, is great for shopping trips. The electric power steering feels so light (perhaps too light) that even putting it in a garage is a breeze.

    Compared to the 1.8-liter model, the power is not enough, but if you think about the scope of practical application, it seems sufficient.

    Smooth acceleration from the automatic transmission, which shifts smoothly, creates the feeling of a higher-class car.

But isn’t the price of such “advertising” too high? And won't this affect the quality of mass models? Recently, when I was driving various Toyotas from Japan, such thoughts came to my mind more and more often. It is frightening that formula technologies will come to the masses not only in the form of systems, elements and materials tested in races, but also in the form of solutions saved for the sake of big sport.

This is how the time passed behind the wheel of a Corolla Runx, thinking “get on with it.” I wasn’t surprised by anything, I didn’t remember anything, nothing upset me. I don’t remember how I sat down, how I tuned in, how I drove and how I got out. Everything is on autopilot. Even the price didn't bother me.

If it is overpriced, then it is understandable. This is like a guarantee for a calm future if any problems arise.

But for a car with a mileage of 20 thousand, some extraneous sounds in the suspension alerted me through sleepy movements, and the suspension itself seemed a little stiffer than I would like in a Toyota Corolla.

And really: how can the banal and known as twice two Toyota Corolla (in this case Corolla Runx) surprise us? We have already driven a similar Allex hatchback.

True, that car was boosted to 190 hp. 1.8 liter engine. But a one and a half liter version of the model, only in a station wagon (Corolla Fielder), was also already on the Tribune.

However, in reality, it was not possible to repeat what had been done. Why? Who knows! But this hatchback is not at all the same as the “hot Japanese guy” Allex, and not the same as the “practical married man” Fielder: at its core, it turned out to be more boring than both of them.

And the point here is not only in the configurations, where Runx loses to its opponents in some positions. This hatchback also refused to drive normally.

No, from a standstill it starts very quickly, but by 100 km the rate of acceleration drops noticeably, and after 120 the car does not want to accelerate noticeably at all - well, if only downhill, and with the gas pedal trampled under the rug.

No, it’s not good to drive like that, because even if you don’t intend to race the car, the ability to quickly overtake on the track will never be superfluous. But I remember that the 1.5-liter Fielder did not have such phlegmatic behavior.

But when it comes to handling, the Runx has its own character. The car seemed noticeably more nimble than other versions of the Corolla (and this is not a matter of body length - the turning radius is actually small).

And in extreme modes, the Runx demonstrated unexpectedly sharp reactions to recovery after a drift or skid: the hatchback stops sliding so abruptly that it can immediately go into antiphase, and if this moment is missed, then it will be very difficult to “catch” the car and keep it on the trajectory.

Therefore, in order to go through a turn in a beautiful, controlled skid, you don’t have to release the handbrake immediately after the jerk: only then will the side slide be really long, beautiful, and most importantly, controlled (both with the steering wheel and the gas)!

However, you shouldn’t be a hooligan on the roads. Therefore, I personally wouldn’t enjoy driving a Runx every day—it’s boring to just drive a simple Corolla. And all because this Lenten dish has only one peppercorn, and is hidden somewhere at the very bottom of the plate. Besides, this peppercorn is too expensive.

Fielder, alex, runx: all the same

Apparently, I will never cease to be amazed at the genius of Kiichiro Toyoda, who created not just a brand of cars, but an entire system for their production - of excellent quality and with excellent performance characteristics. It’s hard to convince me that there is another car company in the world that can satisfy the needs of the mass motorist as much as Toyota.

When it became known that our next test subject would be the Toyota Runx, there was not much enthusiasm. This is probably the last car from the penultimate Corolla family that I haven’t gotten to know closely. And I was pleasantly disappointed - it turned out to have enough features, and learning new things is always interesting.

A city compact car for a person (regardless of gender and age) who professes a quiet lifestyle, and without any special problems. If I understand correctly, Europe has the majority of such cars, and Japan is apparently moving in the same direction.

Outwardly, this family doesn’t appeal to me, and I don’t want to talk about hatchbacks at all. What is being made of this body now is not to my taste. It is clear that appearance and body type are not the whole car. But as soon as you get into his salon, you immediately forget about appearance.

In Runx it is light, with black inserts along the top of the doors and front panel, which create a unique festive and cozy atmosphere. Simplicity of equipment and good quality of finishing only enhance the feeling of reliability.

How could it be different in Corolla?

Quite quickly we managed to find a comfortable seating position, which was greatly facilitated by the height adjustment of the seat. And then I noticed that it wasn’t so crowded for me and the passenger. In previous generations of the model this was worse. Even if you set out to find some sins, it is unlikely that anything significant will be discovered. We can firmly state that everything is for a person.

The Runx is the same on the road - nothing special, moderately stiff suspension, good steering, clear brakes, sound insulation typical for the class. Maybe it would be better to add more power to the engine.

No, it drives fine, it’s just that on some climbs you want more excitement, then overtaking will become more confident. If you want to drive, you need to look towards the Allex - the engine is livelier and the suspension settings are different.

Here everything says: “calm, only calm.”

I know that there are no perfect cars, but the Corolla family is the closest to ideal, and in this family the Runx is probably the first. I wonder if Auris can compete with it? I think yes.

In Runx, as in the entire “Corolla” family of that generation, the soul remained in the minds of young engineers, stylists, enthusiastic and selfless. The shell, the body, which in all religions is imperfect and even vicious, reached the assembly line.

Runx does just that. “Crickets,” despite being four years old, are already making their home in the interior. Somehow the drumming of the suspension is not very polite for such an age. And the rest... Gray, dull. No, not bad.

The quality of materials is at the class level, ergonomics without question. The engine shares its “horses” without stinginess, the “automatic” is moderately reasonable, “taxiing” is easy and safe.

However, the green melancholy that corrodes one’s own human soul does not allow one to come to terms with the fact that one will have to coexist and get along with all this.

And this, it should be noted, the next time we communicate with the Corolla of that generation, it gets worse and progresses. And when you get acquainted with its cost, it even worsens.
