How to reduce gasoline consumption

How to reduce fuel consumption How to make a car less “gluttonous” and save on fuel - DRIVE2

According to research results, currently every fourth resident of Russia owns a car. In turn, car maintenance occupies one of the leading positions in the list of family budget expenses.

Giving up a car is difficult (and sometimes completely impossible), but reducing the cost of maintaining it is quite possible. Perhaps the easiest way to reduce car costs is to save fuel.

And here the main question arises: how can this be done without harm to the car?
Why does a car consume so much fuel?

When thinking about buying a car, every person pays attention to the main qualities for him: for some, the main criterion is capacity, for others, engine power.

In addition, for the vast majority of buyers, one of the main parameters of a car is its fuel consumption.

By analyzing the data declared by the manufacturer, the potential buyer makes a conclusion for himself whether he can maintain such a car.

Fuel consumption is a relative value. The amount of gasoline a car consumes per unit of time can vary greatly depending on the situation. There are certain factors that affect fuel consumption.

First of all, fuel consumption will depend on the engine size of the car. Everything is very simple here: the larger the total volume of the cylinders, the more fuel will be burned during each engine operating cycle.

However, since the advent of the first internal combustion engine, technology has stepped forward, and today many additional devices have been created to help reduce fuel consumption. The most revolutionary and effective of them are the injector, electronic throttle, and variable valve timing system.

The presence of such systems in the engine significantly reduces the fuel consumption of the vehicle.
Electronic throttle unit

Another important parameter is the weight of the car. Parameters such as acceleration, speed and fuel consumption depend on the ratio of the car’s weight and engine power. The heavier the car, the more difficult it is to move it; accordingly, more fuel will be supplied to the combustion chamber - its consumption will increase.

Aerodynamic qualities also play an important role. The less the car resists the air flow, the less you have to turn the engine - less fuel consumption.

Thus, the main indicator of fuel consumption is formed from the ratio of the vehicle’s weight, engine power and its aerodynamic properties. In fact, these numbers cannot be radically changed.

However, there are other parameters that do not significantly affect fuel consumption.
Each driver can influence them and thus reduce gasoline costs. How to reduce fuel consumption

There are many recommendations from experienced motorists on how to reduce fuel consumption. Some of them sound absolutely fantastic, but there are also options that are completely justified from the point of view of physics and chemistry. It’s worth dwelling on them in more detail.

Driving style. A car can be thought of as an object that is subject to the forces of attraction, resistance, friction, etc.

In order for it to move, it is necessary to supply fuel, mix it with air, set it on fire, transfer energy to the drive wheels and overcome all of the above forces. The most difficult time to do this is when the car is stationary.

It follows that a sharp start increases fuel consumption. Sudden braking can lead to a complete stop, which in turn will increase fuel consumption.

The “appetite” of the car is also directly proportional to the engine speed; the higher it is, the higher the consumption.

Thus, an aggressive driving style with maximum acceleration and frequent braking increases fuel consumption by an order of magnitude.

The best option is to pick up speed evenly and maintain medium speed. You should not drive 40 km/h in first gear; the distribution of force should be rational.

Transmission.
Fuel economy enthusiasts like to say that “an economical car must have three pedals.” Despite the technology of modern automatic transmissions, they do not allow you to control fuel consumption. Thus, it should be understood that, compared to the rational use of manual transmissions, automation increases fuel consumption by approximately 10%. Manual transmission

The robotic gearbox is currently considered one of the most economical, followed by manual and automatic gearboxes with a number of gears from 6 to 8. Each gearbox has its own advantages and disadvantages, but in terms of efficiency, the “robot” still holds the leading position.

Car windows. Open windows reduce the aerodynamic properties of the car. As a result, air resistance increases and fuel consumption increases.

On-board equipment, including air conditioning, radio, various lighting equipment, etc.

For example, the air conditioner is powered by the engine, this can be noticed if you stop the car and turn on the air conditioner - the number of revolutions on the tachometer will increase slightly.

Any other electrical equipment is powered by a battery, which, in turn, is constantly charged by a generator powered by the engine - hence the increase in fuel consumption.

Engine oil. It is necessary to use high-quality oil and ensure that it is replaced regularly. The moving parts of a car engine are subject to frictional force; to reduce it, engine oil is needed. Consequently, high-quality oil allows you to reduce fuel consumption.

Tire pressure.
Again about physics. When contacting the ground, a frictional force occurs between the tires and the road. When tires are flat, the friction force increases and, accordingly, fuel consumption increases. Thus, monitoring tire pressure is advisable from the point of view of not only safety, but also economy. Tire pressure

Comfortable shoes. The driver needs to control how hard he presses the gas pedal. In order not to over-throttle when it is not necessary, you should drive in shoes with thin soles, which allow you to feel the pedal better.

General condition of the car.
To ensure that the car does not exceed the consumption figures declared by the manufacturer, it is necessary to monitor its technical condition. We are talking about regular replacement of filters, correct operation of the ignition, the required level of tire pressure, etc. THAT

Car load. The cargo capacity of each vehicle is limited. It should be remembered that each passenger and each bag in the trunk increases the load on the car's chassis, so the engine has to compensate for the increased load. According to research, every 50 kg of cargo increases fuel consumption by about 2%.

Quite often, when asked how to save fuel, you can hear a sarcastic answer - walk. The advice is, of course, practical, but not always feasible.

In general, saving fuel does not require much effort; you just need to rationally use the vehicle's capabilities. For example, turn off the air conditioning if it is not necessary, do not carry a barbecue, tent and old dumbbells with you for several months, etc.

In addition, careful handling will not only reduce fuel consumption, but also extend the life of the car.

How to most effectively reduce fuel consumption: advice from auto experts

Having a vehicle equipped with an internal combustion engine requires regular refueling with gasoline or diesel. At the same time, the money spent on purchasing fuel constitutes one of the main expenses associated with operating a car.

Naturally, after several visits to gas stations, any car owner has a desire not only to reduce the cost of refueling the car, but also how to reduce fuel consumption.

In this case, the most optimal solution is to purchase an economical vehicle, however, since the choice has already been made, then all that remains is to rely on personal feelings and/or listen to the opinions of more experienced drivers and auto mechanics.

Causes of excessive fuel consumption

The main reasons for high fuel consumption lie in the technical condition of the car.

If it is in unsatisfactory technical condition, then no amount of tricks (economical driving, use of various additives and fuel savers) will help solve this problem.

Among the large number of breakdowns that can contribute to an increase in fuel consumption, the most common malfunctions are:

  • power unit (the spark plug has failed, the timing belt has stretched, the ignition has failed, etc.);
  • one of the sensors that monitor the operation of the fuel injection system (lambda probe, mass air flow sensor, oxygen sensor, etc.);
  • suspension, braking system or transmission.
  • No less often is the use of filters clogged with dirt: air and/or fuel;
  • Excessive consumption of gasoline or diesel is also facilitated by the abuse of prolonged warm-up of the power unit. In practice, you should not warm up the car engine for more than three minutes. This time is quite enough to disperse the engine oil through all friction units and pairs. After 3 minutes, you can start driving at low speeds (up to 2000 rpm) - in this case, fuel consumption will be less and the engine will warm up faster;
  • When it comes to fuel economy, not the least important thing is the tire pressure of the car, which must be regularly monitored and maintained within the limits specified in its operating manual. The type (winter, summer, all-season), tread pattern and amount of wear of the tires installed on the car also matter;
  • significantly affects the consumption of gasoline or diesel and an incorrectly set wheel camber/toe angle. It is recommended to check it every 15...20 thousand kilometers;
  • Excessive enthusiasm for external body kit (tuning) also leads to increased fuel consumption. This is especially true for elements made using handicraft methods. But the standard trunk, fly swatter, false arches and other body kit elements significantly worsen the aerodynamics of the car, which also leads to its overspending;
  • open windows worsen the aerodynamics of the car, especially when driving at speeds over 60 km/h;
  • The driving style of each individual driver cannot be discounted. An overly aggressive driving style, with a constant sharp increase in speed and no less sharp braking, causes unreasonably high consumption of gasoline or diesel;

In addition, if for no apparent reason the consumption of gasoline/diesel has increased significantly, you must visit a licensed service station, where, using special instruments, experienced specialists will be able to identify and eliminate the malfunction.

Ways to reduce fuel consumption

In practice, there are a large number of different techniques that allow you to maintain the fuel consumption that is normatively established for a particular vehicle. At the same time, numerous experts and specialists consider the most important condition for ensuring its optimal value to be keeping the car in good condition.

Advice from experienced drivers and auto experts will tell you how to reduce fuel consumption. In their opinion, the following will help get rid of such problems:

  • refusal to use additives that increase the octane number instead of gasoline recommended by the car manufacturer;
  • turning off the stove when the engine warms up in the cold season - this will reduce fuel consumption by about 5%;
  • replacing the air filter after 10...15 thousand kilometers - especially in the summer, when there is a lot of dust on the road (fuel savings can be up to 10%);
  • replacing spark plugs at least every 15 thousand kilometers, which will give about 10% fuel savings;
  • regular monitoring of tire pressure (reducing fuel consumption by up to 7%);
  • lack of a trunk (box) on the roof of the car and other body kit elements;
  • braking with the engine rather than the brake pedal;
  • Regularly checking the correct alignment of wheel camber/toe angles. At the same time, in addition to fuel savings, which can reach 15%, long-term operation of the tires will also be ensured.

In addition, there are fuel savers that help avoid a large increase in fuel consumption. Among them, the most effective means are:

  • Magnetic fuel savers Fuel Free and Fuel Saver

Magnetic savers are installed on the fuel supply hose in the immediate vicinity of the fuel supply units to the cylinders (injector, carburetor, high-pressure fuel pump).

Their principle of operation is based on the influence of the magnetic field, which is created by powerful neodymium magnets (an alloy of boron, neodymium and iron), on the molecular structure of the fuel.

At the moment of intersection of magnetic field lines, its structure changes, surface tension decreases, oxygen solubility increases, molecular polarization increases, combustion rate increases, detonation resistance and other properties of the fuel decrease.

Under its influence, fuel combustion in the combustion chamber becomes significantly more efficient, and the amount of exhaust gases is reduced. According to the manufacturers of these devices, fuel consumption is reduced by approximately 20%, while exhaust toxicity is reduced, etc.

  • Fuel Shark fuel saving device

Structurally, Fuel Shark is a high-capacity electrolytic capacitor, which, when connected to the vehicle's on-board network, reduces the load on its battery.

At the same time, the operation of the power supply system is leveled, which ensures a stable voltage supply to the spark plugs and a high-quality spark. As a result, the fuel burns more efficiently.

The economizer is installed in the cigarette lighter socket and, according to the manufacturers, saves up to 30% of fuel.

The principle of operation of the cavitator is to convert liquid fuel into a gaseous state. Structurally, it is a tube of variable cross-section, which is installed after the fuel pump.

It is known that fuel at the molecular level has long chains of molecules that have low combustion characteristics. With the help of a cavitator, they are destroyed, which contributes to faster and more efficient combustion of fuel.

In the general case, the economic effect is achieved due to the fact that while maintaining the existing dynamic parameters, the car consumes significantly less fuel. In addition, the cavitator separates heavy fractions from the fuel and is equipped with an additional filter.

Therefore, the mixture entering the combustion chambers is highly purified, which increases the efficiency of the entire system and reduces the likelihood of engine breakdowns.

The ATW impulse device is designed for all types of cars equipped with a 12-volt battery and is connected directly to its terminals. The pulses generated by the device contribute to accelerated charging of the battery, due to which the generator spends significantly less time and power on this process.

In turn, this reduces the load on the engine and reduces fuel injection time. In accordance with the technical characteristics declared by the manufacturer, fuel consumption is reduced by 10...20%. The advisability of using the device with worn-out batteries is especially noted.

During operation, ATW impulse not only saves fuel, but also protects (restores) the battery plates, increasing its service life by 2...3 times.

How to reduce gasoline consumption: basic secrets

Almost every country on our planet has faced an oil crisis more than once. For example, in the early 70s, the crisis hit the world economy as a whole . It was after this that world leaders began to think about how to conserve the planet’s energy resources as much as possible.

Thanks to this incentive, car manufacturers have made a certain breakthrough in reducing fuel consumption. Foreign cars of modern production are extremely economical. But the domestic auto industry is no different from this characteristic.

Saving fuel is not only an environmental issue, but also a matter of saving you money. After all, the more economical your car is, the easier it will be for you, namely for your wallet.

The issue of saving a car on gasoline is extremely relevant due to the constantly rising price of this type of fuel. Some motorists switch their cars to diesel fuel, but there are ways to save on gasoline as well. It is enough to follow some tips, thanks to which you can significantly reduce the amount of fuel consumed.

When it comes to reducing gasoline consumption, an integrated approach is important, since if all instructions are followed, the result will be truly noticeable. You must record the amount of fuel that your car “ate” yourself.

In principle, such recommendations are given by almost all car manufacturers. For example, in the operating instructions for a car of the famous Skoda brand, you can find instructions regarding recording fuel consumption.

Experts from this manufacturer recommend keeping a logbook in which you need to record the time of filling the tank, the amount of fuel poured in and other information.

Keeping such a journal is very simple, and the effect of this simple technique will be positive.

Based on the entries in the logbook, you can easily see whether the condition of the car has changed. In case of negative dynamics, you will need to contact the service center.

You will also need specialist advice if benzyl consumption has increased significantly.

There are also electronic logbooks that you can download as an app to your smartphone and make changes to in real time.

Start and heating

1) Warming up the engine while driving

Lubricants produced using modern technologies have much greater fluidity at low temperatures and are capable of heating up faster than similar materials of earlier production. Therefore, you should forget about the habit of warming up the car before starting to drive.

In addition, warming up the car leads to excessive consumption of gasoline and adversely affects the condition of the car engine. It will be enough to warm up the car at idle for no more than 1 minute. After this, you can safely start moving.

Warming up for 5 - 10 minutes will be enough for the engine to fully warm up. This will warm up not only the engine, but also the brake pads and the oil in the gearbox. The last aspect has an extremely positive effect on the condition of the automatic transmission.

2) Starting the engine without accelerating

Progasovka is the addition of gas when the ignition is turned on. This phenomenon has an extremely bad effect on a modern engine. Too much gas contributes to faster wear of engine parts and starter, as well as to an increase in the amount of fuel consumed.

When carburetor engines were installed in cars, the gas supply was needed so that fuel would enter the carburetor, and the fuel system itself would return to normal operation. Modern engines are equipped with a direct fuel injection system , so when starting the car you do not need to touch the accelerator pedal.

Driving

1) Tachometer readings

You need to monitor the readings of this device if it is present in your car. Fuel consumption also depends on the number of engine revolutions per minute. The lower the revolutions, the lower the gasoline consumption will be.

2) Switching speed at optimal engine speed

You should aim to shift up at the engine speed that is optimal, by shifting a manual transmission or gradually adding gas in the case of an automatic transmission. This technique is guaranteed to reduce the amount of fuel consumed.

If you are driving around the city, then the optimal speed will be 2000 in the case of a diesel car or 2500 in the case of a gasoline car .

It is undesirable to change gear when the car's engine has not yet reached optimal speed.

If you shift up too early, the parts of the cylinder-piston group will wear out faster, and the car will consume more fuel.

3) Moderate addition of gas

If you add gas too slowly and delay the acceleration time, the car will “eat up” more. Gas should be added moderately, with the engine giving 2000-2500 rpm if the car is running on diesel, and 2500-3000 rpm in the case of cars running on gasoline. A modern engine works best at medium speeds rather than at low or high speeds.

4) Smooth start from a place

If you take off abruptly, then excessive fuel consumption is guaranteed. You need to try to move away smoothly and confidently, and accelerate without jerking.

5) Optimal driving speed

Each car has a certain speed range at which the car consumes a minimum of fuel and the engine operates as efficiently as possible.

This gap depends on what kind of engine is installed in the car, on the car’s transmission, weight, aerodynamics and other external factors.

The limits of the speed range must be determined independently experimentally, and after determination, it is advisable not to go beyond the optimal speed limit.

6) Reduce speed at stops near traffic lights

Read also:  Comparing Corolla with Avensis

You should try to calculate the speed of the car in such a way that you do not need to stop at traffic lights, especially if this route is familiar to you. If you see that you won’t have time to get through, then you need to slow down the speed in advance so that by the time the red light goes out, you will have time to drive up to the traffic light, but at such a distance as not to make a stop.

7) Refusal to shift to neutral

In all modern cars, even if the car has a carburetor, switching the gearbox to neutral when releasing the gas and braking before stopping will not help reduce the amount of fuel consumed.

In this case, fuel is supplied to the engine in the same way as in the case of idling.

The engine management system recognizes the release of gas and movement when the gear is engaged as forced idling, that is, as negative acceleration, so the fuel supply is either reduced or stopped altogether.

8) Engine braking

It is advisable to use the standard braking system as little as possible, and instead it is recommended to brake using the engine, that is, either gradually reduce the gear or drive with the gear engaged without pressing the gas pedal.

If you need to perform a maneuver, enter a turn or stop, then it is advisable to predict the trajectory in such a way that you can perform the desired action simply by dosing the gas. If you do not press the brake pedal in order to forcibly reduce the torque, you can not only save on fuel, but also protect the movement itself, especially in the case of a very slippery road.

If the road is icy, it is advisable to use only the engine for braking and gradually shift to a lower gear. This will also protect you from skidding.

9) Use of the terrain

If you are driving along a section where there is a descent, and the road itself is very clearly visible, then it makes sense to let off the gas. In this case, natural gravitational forces will work instead of the engine.

But when driving downhill without using the gas pedal, you cannot remove the car from gear; it is better to switch to a higher one.

In this case, the run-out is reduced, but at the same time a system is activated that will turn off or reduce the supply of fuel to the cylinders. Thanks to this, fuel consumption will be reduced.

10) Idling

There is an opinion that idling is safe for the engine, but, in fact, this is not the case.

If the engine remains in this mode for at least 10 seconds, then during this time it will consume more fuel than when starting and starting to move.

Therefore, if you need to stop for more than 1 minute, then it is advisable to turn off the engine completely. This will not only save more fuel, but will also help extend the life of the engine itself.

11) Reverse and “toffee” on a car with an automatic transmission

If the car has an automatic transmission, then it “knows how” to move on a level surface without using the gas pedal. If the “D” or “R” mode is turned on, the wheels will receive such a torque that is enough to move the car. This technique is advisable to use when driving in reverse or in “toffee”.

12) Driving distance

If you are moving in heavy traffic, then there should be such a distance between you and the car in front that you can move slowly but continuously, without braking until the car comes to a complete stop.

13) Maximum speed

It is advisable not to exceed the speed of 90-100 km/h, since faster driving requires more fuel.

14) Calm ride

Aggressive maneuvers, speeding, hard braking and repeated changes of place lead to the fact that the car consumes more fuel.

Assistive devices

1) Installation and timely use of cruise control

If you are driving on a good, flat road, and your car has cruise control, then you can use it, since this option can significantly reduce the amount of fuel required for consumption. In the case of a road with a slope, cruise control, on the contrary, cannot be used, since in this case the automatic transmission changes gears too often.

2) Using a GPS navigator

The navigator will greatly help you find your way in unfamiliar areas, and also often helps you shorten your route.

Parking

1) Convenient parking

If you plan to leave your car in the parking lot for a long time, then it is advisable to park the car in such a way that you can then leave as easily as possible. If the engine is well warmed up, then leaving such a parking space will require much less energy for maneuvers than in the case when the engine is not completely warmed up.

2) Parking without the need to reverse

When parking, it is advisable to park the car in such a way that you then need to start forward and not backward, or you only need to back up quite a bit. Maneuvers performed in reverse require more fuel consumption than similar movements performed in forward gear.

Exploitation

1) Roof rack

If you leave even an empty trunk on the roof of the car, its aerodynamic drag will increase by a certain percentage. If the trunk is empty, fuel consumption will increase by 5%, and if the trunk is full – by 40%. Therefore, it is not advisable to once again drive with this additional load on the roof.

2) Ballast in the car

The more a car weighs, the more fuel it requires. To transport 100 kg of excess weight you need 10% more fuel.

3) Timely replacement of filters (air and oil)

If you replace these filters in time, you can not only prevent premature engine wear, but also increase its efficiency, which, in turn, will lead to more efficient fuel consumption.

Car enthusiasts change the oil filter in a timely manner, as a person will notice the presence of defects while changing the engine oil.

If you do not change the air filter in time, the fuel-air mixture will be over-rich, and this leads to excessive fuel consumption.

4) Engine oil

It is advisable to use only those engine oils that are recommended for use by the manufacturer of your car, since this oil will meet all engine characteristics and prescribed operating conditions. Timely oil changes will increase engine efficiency, reduce wear and reduce the amount of fuel consumed.

5) Removing snow, ice and dirt from the car

If you remove snow and ice from your car before driving, this will not only protect you while driving, but will also reduce the aerodynamic drag of the car. Also, the resistance of the car is affected by the dirt that accumulates on the body and bottom of the vehicle. It is best to treat the body with special mastics, which will improve aerodynamics.

Tires

1) Correct pressure

This is a very important factor in the issue of fuel consumption. If the pressure is underestimated, the contact area between the wheels and the road surface increases, and therefore friction increases. And this may be one of the reasons for excessive fuel consumption by the car. It is extremely important to check tire pressure at times when the outside temperature changes noticeably.

2) Increasing tire pressure

Every conscientious manufacturer indicates the permissible tire pressure range. Experts recommend setting the highest possible level from this range, since at this pressure the contact area between the tires and the road surface will be minimal, and therefore there will be less friction. By following these simple tips, you can save a tidy sum on fuel.

Fuel consumption - how to reduce it? – magazine Behind the Wheel

The desire to save on fuel consumption is something immortal. Even with the cost of a liter of gasoline being 10 kopecks (this has happened in history!), Homo sapiens went to any lengths to reduce fuel costs. Today, as we know, gasoline costs slightly more than 10 kopecks, and therefore interest in the topic is alive and well.

Well, let's remember the main ways to implement the idea.

Petrol

According to the advertisement, switching to gasoline with increased cleaning ability can save the owner as much as 10% of fuel. Well, this is the honest truth - such gasolines can actually reduce fuel consumption. But this is not the whole truth.

According to the advertisement, switching to gasoline with increased cleaning ability can save the owner as much as 10% of fuel. Well, this is the honest truth - such gasolines can actually reduce fuel consumption. But this is not the whole truth.

Related materials

The fact is that such advertising statements relate exclusively to “staged” experiments. And if you compare the behavior of a clean engine filled with 98-octane Ultimate, Ecto, etc. gasoline.

, with his grimy colleague, who all his life consumed only ordinary 95, and even without any cleaning abilities, then the effect may turn out to be exactly this.

However, as the dirt is washed away, the difference will melt before our eyes and will ultimately come down to a different reaction of the engine to gasoline with different octane numbers.

In other words, two brand new engines, filled with detergent and regular gasoline with the same octane number, will behave almost identically - the difference can only be caught on the stands.

As for talking about comparing, for example, 92s and 95s, you shouldn’t count on real savings. In addition, Europe has already abandoned 92.

Engine oil

Reducing consumption is possible, but is usually compared with outdated mineral oils.

Reducing consumption is possible, but is usually compared with outdated mineral oils.

You can't save much here. Almost all modern oils (above SL) can be considered energy-saving, and therefore we can only talk about some kind of gain in comparison with the ancient mineral water 15W-40 class SJ.

However, the numbers in this case can be quite good - 5-6 percent. And in certain modes - for example, minimum stable idle - up to 10%. True, lately they have been trying hard to accustom us to 0W-20 oils - they say, the savings are obvious: oil is like water.

Well, in winter, yes, it’s possible. But in the summer there can be troubles.

High voltage wires and spark plugs

Good candles can save you about a percentage or two...

Good candles can save you about a percentage or two...

Everything is clear with candles. The energy of the spark discharge gives impetus to the flame front, the speed of propagation of which directly affects efficiency, power, ecology, etc. The speed of flame propagation depends on the squared temperature, and the temperature in the initial phase, when the flame is still “sitting” in the interelectrode space, depends on the discharge energy.

Read also:  How to calculate gasoline consumption

This dependence is especially noticeable when ignition is difficult - at low voltage in the primary ignition circuit, at minimum idle speed and low load conditions, when there are a lot of residual gases in the chamber. Our tests have shown that a well-chosen pair of spark plug plus wire can improve engine efficiency by 2–3%.

Related materials

Let us remember that iridium and platinum spark plugs last three to four times longer than regular spark plugs. At the same time, refractory materials of the electrodes make it possible to sharply reduce their size, increasing the electric field strength in the interelectrode space. This increases the stability and stability of the discharge and allows the spark gap to be increased.

At the same time, a more powerful discharge improves the cleaning of the electrodes and insulator - therefore, the spark plug works better in dirty conditions.

A lot also depends on the gap in the spark plugs. The larger the gap, the larger the spark, and therefore the size of the initial source of ignition. And the speed of propagation of the flame front strongly depends on the geometric size of the initial ignition zone.

But as the gap increases, so does its resistance. This means that breakdown will occur at a higher voltage in the secondary circuit. And it is important that this voltage is generally enough for a breakdown! Therefore, for injection engines, in which the voltage in the secondary circuit is higher than that of carburetor engines, it is recommended to set larger gaps.

In addition, as the gap increases, the likelihood of shunting the electrodes with all sorts of “soot bridges” decreases - this is also important.

From candles to wires. Owners of old ladies should know that good wires regularly contribute their two cents to economic theory. The quality and tightness of the contact tip, the tightness of the cap, the amount of distributed resistance, as well as the length of the wire play a role here.

The last circumstance is especially interesting. Almost all wire manufacturers offer consumers products of different lengths for ease of installation. However, in this case, spark discharges have to travel different distances, and therefore the uniform operation of the internal combustion engine is disrupted.

If the wires had zero resistance, then, of course, there would be no difference, but according to ISO standards, radio interference tolerances must be met. Therefore, resistance is present both in the spark plugs and in the wires, and no one tracks the total resistance of the pair.

That would be nice.

Filters

The type of filter affects flow less than its condition.

The type of filter affects flow less than its condition.

Related materials

Does fuel consumption vary depending on the type of oil or air filter? Yes, it can change, but not very significantly: within the same units of percent. Moreover, the type of filter affects much less than its actual condition. The resistance of the air filter is especially important.

The larger it is, the worse the filling of the cylinders is, and this immediately affects fuel consumption. And depending on the manufacturer of air filters, their resistance can vary almost two to three times.

Oil filters also affect consumption, but relatively little. And here the filter size influences to a certain extent.

After all, it acts as a small engine oil cooler, which can contain up to 10–20% of the total oil volume.

According to the results of our tests, installing a “cool” filter can improve the efficiency of the machine by a couple of percent.

Gas

Supporters of gas defend it as fiercely as opponents criticize it.

Gas fuel apologists are perplexed: why aren’t we switching to gas en masse if the savings are obvious? Here the light is no longer just a few percent, but tens. Yes, this is true: and everyone can switch to gas tomorrow. However, there are also disadvantages.

The car will lose its agility, lose its former volume in the trunk, and start worse in winter. In addition, the network of gas filling stations is not well developed. Finally, you will have to refuel more often when driving on gas.

Which is better: compressed or liquefied? Compressed is methane, liquefied is a propane-butane mixture.

Liquefied - significantly higher in calories, and the cylinders for storing it are more compact. But it is heavier than air, and therefore, if you store a car in a garage, there may be problems: if there is a leak, it does not rise up and is not ventilated like methane, but accumulates below.

He loves pits and all sorts of cellars: it’s not easy to pump him out of there. And this is a fire hazard. Such cars are often simply not allowed into underground parking lots.

Fuel equipment for liquefied gas is simpler and cheaper, and there are significantly more gas stations - also an argument in its favor. Compressed gas is cheaper, less fire hazardous, and more environmentally friendly - after all, it is methane, and it burns better than a propane-butane mixture.

Additives of all stripes

The authors actively dislike additives of any kind, but do not set out to indiscriminately criticize everything at once.

The authors actively dislike additives of any kind, but do not set out to indiscriminately criticize everything at once.

Let’s be careful: never pour any kind of drugs into at least warranty vehicles. After the warranty period expires, experiment for your health. As for Zarulev’s tests, in some cases small fuel savings were actually achieved - within a couple of percent.

We have never recorded the promised 8–10 percent or more. Let us immediately note that the promised effect can usually be used to judge the seriousness of the authors of the idea.

Only charlatans promise savings of 20, 30 or more percent.

In any case, in our experience, no one has yet been able to unearth tens of percent savings hidden inside in a well-functioning and perfected design of an internal combustion engine. If we see it, we'll let you know right away.

A number of leading automakers install energy-saving tires on cars coming off the assembly line. These are tires that have lower rolling resistance, which provides fuel savings that usually do not exceed 5%. The service life of such tires is approximately equal to the service life of ordinary tires.

The main disadvantage of energy-saving tires is their cost, which is higher than the cost of regular rubber.

Simpler methods include following the instructions regarding the pressure in standard tires when driving at high speeds.

By raising the pressure by 0.2 bar before a long journey, we will ensure slightly lower fuel consumption. And we advise all, all, all car enthusiasts to simply monitor the tire pressure. A reduced tire worsens the economy, handling and resistance of the tire sidewall to punctures on the potholes of our roads.

And over-inflated tires make the car too harsh.

Unfortunately, owners of very shabby cars solve the issue of saving simply: down with the neutralizer!

Unfortunately, owners of very shabby cars solve the issue of saving simply: down with the neutralizer!

This, of course, is not Zarulev’s approach to business, but you can dream up. If the neutralizer is in working condition, the behavior of the motor will remain virtually unchanged. Its resistance is not so great as to “jam” the release.

But if it is completely clogged with deposits and acts as a kind of “plug” at the outlet, then the engine will, of course, feel it. If we consider such sadism as a way to save money, it will work, of course.

But at the same time you become a criminal, polluting the atmosphere.

The most remarkable fuel savers known. There is no sense, but, as a rule, there is no harm either. We won’t discuss it: we’re tired of it. For those interested, read here.

What if you apply everything at once?

There is a well-known children's puzzle: someone heard about inventions that save 10, 30 and 60% of fuel, respectively, after which he decided to put everything together and save 100%.

Like, what did he do?

There is a well-known children's puzzle: someone heard about inventions that save 10, 30 and 60% of fuel, respectively, after which he decided to put everything together and save 100%.

Like, what did he do?

Once we conducted a similar experiment on a standard VAZ engine, bringing together the winners of the examinations of recent years.

The idea was simple: first we drove the engine in standard configuration on regular gasoline, and then slowly began to throw “candy” to the engine.

We started with cleaning gasoline, then changed the spark plugs to iridium ones, then changed the air filter to a Bosch filter, and filled in Shell cool oil. And every time we monitored: is there a difference in the behavior of the motor?

There is a difference - and a significant one. The best components at the time of testing, installed on a conventional engine with the Cinderella package, gave a total effect on fuel consumption of about 9%.

It is curious that the simple sum of the effects recorded from each product in “single skating” turned out to be higher. This is how it should have been - there is a complete analogy with the children's problem mentioned above.

A simple addition of effects does not work - there is always a mutual influence of processes in the motor.

Why isn’t all this improved technology used on an assembly line? Because of the money, of course.

Why did we remember the Martian landscape? Now you will understand...

The famous science fiction writer Robert Sheckley had a creepy story called “The Ultimate Weapon.” A lost arsenal with unimaginable weapons was found on Mars, and the last thing they found was a box with the inscription “Absolute Weapon.”

They foolishly opened it - a certain cloud floated out and began to devour everything - it needed protoplasm. And he didn’t care about force fields and other tricks of less advanced types of military equipment.

In short, everyone died.

What are these memories for? Moreover, there is the most effective way to save fuel, which is more effective than all of the above taken together. No, don’t change to the tram, although this, of course, will reduce your gasoline costs the most. It's about something else.

Most drivers simply cannot imagine how they can drive a car without sudden braking and acceleration. You need to be the first to leave the intersection, and attempts to get in front of your nose should be nipped in the bud. Meanwhile, the main reserve in terms of savings is precisely here: after all, the main energy is required precisely to impart acceleration to the mass.

Therefore, fuel consumption on the same car under the same conditions can easily differ by tens or even hundreds of percent!

ZR conducted similar experiments several times. A typical example was described here, and the reaction of NAMI specialists was also noted there.

The point is that a production Volvo S60 car with an automatic transmission and a 170-horsepower engine easily covered 1,440 km on one tank, running from Moscow to St. Petersburg and back without refueling. At the same time, I can’t say that it was a snail’s pace—not at all.

But nevertheless, the information then caused a very negative reaction among many: since I bought a powerful car, there is no need to worry about my wallet: I pressed the right pedal and rushed.

Yes, of course - most people drive like that. But we are now discussing ways to save fuel. And the majority mentioned above have to refuel the car even on a one-way trip. I've driven 500 kilometers, and the 70-liter tank is already winking - they say, it should be added. Here's a savings of hundreds of percent: 500 or 1440 km - is there a difference?

It's easier to do harm than to save

As you can see, there are relatively few ways to save fuel. But in return there are a whole bunch of options to waste it aimlessly. For those who are not afraid to recognize their own in one of these options, we invite you to look here.

Good luck to everyone on the roads... and at the gas station!
