If you ask drivers which car accessory is the most useful, many without hesitation will choose not even a DVR, but a rear view camera. Nowadays, car parking has become a real problem.

Especially for inexperienced drivers, parking in reverse is a truly challenging task. Due to the increase in cars of different brands on the roads, the permissible areas for parking lots are being reduced, and vehicles often have to be parked in a minimal area.

Control over the rear hemisphere of the car is a thing that is difficult to overestimate, both when parking and when driving. Standard mirrors are not always enough for this, especially on station wagons and pickups with their low visibility. Parking sensors partially correct the situation, but you can’t expect much information from them.

What are cameras at the back of the car used for?

A rear view camera is a device that transmits a video image of the situation behind the car to the interior monitor.

In our age of rapid technological development, such video cameras seem to be commonplace and are already found in almost every tenth car. The presence of this expensive option makes it easier to park in different situations and even at night.

You can connect the rear view camera to either a standard car monitor or a separately installed one.

This is what the image from the rear view camera looks like on the monitor

Vehicle drivers often face parking problems. Today's large cities are overloaded with transport, so in crowded urban conditions, every centimeter is important.

When parking on city streets or in a parking lot, you can easily hit someone else’s car and get into an unpleasant situation.

In such conditions, parking radars, popularly called parking sensors, could also be useful, but they do not give drivers a clear picture behind the car and they have to park, as they say, by ear.

Video: how the rear view camera works

Who needs parking cameras?

Not so long ago, rear view cameras for cars were only in science fiction movies, and car owners had to turn their heads when parking, relying only on their own sense of the dimensions of their cars. Then parking sensors appeared, somewhat simplifying the parking process. Now, with the advent of rear view cameras, putting the car in the right place has become quite easy.

Parking with a rear view camera

Installing rear view cameras is necessary for those drivers who regularly park in various unfamiliar places. These video cameras will allow you to see any obstacles in the parking lot, which will help you avoid damaging your and others’ cars.

Also, these devices will be excellent helpers for those motorists who are often forced to park their cars at night in unlit places.

Rear view cameras will serve excellently both novice drivers and experienced car owners, providing them with additional traffic safety and comfort.

Pros and cons of rear view cameras

Parking cameras evolved from conventional video cameras, but have the following differences from them:

  • The viewing angle of the rear view cameras starts at 130 degrees in order to show the driver as much space behind the car as possible.
  • Mirror images in rearview cameras allow the driver to see the correct location of objects behind the car. In other words, what is, for example, on the left of the car is displayed on the monitor on the left, and what is on the right is also displayed on the screen on the right.

Rear view cameras for cars also have some disadvantages. For example, using them at night is not as effective. There are, of course, models of infrared video cameras, but they are more expensive and are not so convenient to use during the day due to the unnaturalness of the image.

However, an overview using an infrared camera is not so relevant, since parking problems usually arise during the daytime.

In addition, many conventional parking video devices have a slight infrared bias, which provides sufficient visibility even at dusk.

How to install a car video camera

Typically, a rear view camera for a car finds its place in the area where the license plate is attached.

This is due to the convenience of providing optimal visibility and the need to lay wiring from the video source to the monitor, which is more convenient to do through standard body openings.

Today, in addition to wired ones, there are also models of wireless cameras that transmit images to the monitor in the FM range. Such devices still have one wire - this is the power wire, but connecting it to the on-board electrical network of the machine should not cause difficulties.

Often, you can “power” a parking video camera yourself. This can be done by connecting the camera wires to the same circuits as the license plate lights.

In some cases, like trucks, a wireless video device is the only viable option.

The level of radio communication with such a camera is provided up to a distance of 50 meters, which is enough for any car, no matter how large it is.

The rear view camera is often mounted in the license plate area

Also interesting is the option of a GPS navigator or car video recorder, if they have the ability to connect a parking video camera. These devices have features that eliminate the need to use a car monitor. The advantages of such interaction between devices are as follows:

  1. Saving money.
  2. Rational use of the working area in the area of the dashboard and windshield.

Tips for choosing

When choosing a rear view camera for a car, you must remember that the device must have the following properties:

  1. transmit the image to the monitor in mirror image. If this function is not available, then using the video camera will be inconvenient (see above);
  2. a useful property of the camera is the markings, which allow you to park with an accuracy of 10-15 cm. Devices without markings also have a place, but their use requires more skill;
  3. The viewing angle of the video camera should be more than 110 degrees, and preferably 150 or 170 degrees;
  4. the presence of infrared illumination, which turns on automatically at night, will not be superfluous.

Following these rules when choosing will help you choose the most effective device.

Another important characteristic when purchasing is the camera matrix. It is manufactured based on one of two technologies:

  • complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS, English CMOS);
  • Surface Charge Coupled Devices (CCD).

They differ in appearance and size, but perform the same function. CMOS-CMOS matrices perform worse in low light conditions, conveying worse image quality.

At the same time, they have 2 advantages - progressive scanning, when high-quality and low-quality signal lines are broadcast to the monitor sequentially, as well as lower cost.

CCD-CCD matrices behave better in low light conditions and transmit a higher-quality image to the screen, but they consume more energy and are inferior to cheaper ones in operating speed.

Rear view cameras are divided into 3 categories:

  1. Reach-View is the most affordable, but combines good color rendering quality and sealed housing;
  2. OmniSpecial – cameras from the mid-price category;
  3. Avangard are expensive cameras that transmit clear images and have excellent light sensitivity.

Today, a rear view camera is the most reliable device that ensures the efficiency of safe reversing of a vehicle. This element of additional on-board equipment provides the driver with more convenient and confident parking and helps prevent possible troubles associated with unsuccessful reversing.

In this article, we tried to answer the main question “what are rear view cameras for?”, and also revealed some other aspects. I would like to know your opinion, dear readers. Does your car have a rear view camera? Does it help you when parking? You can talk about this and much more on the topic of the article in the comments below.

Which is better: parking sensors or rear view camera?

20.06.20172

The number of cars around the world is rapidly increasing, streets and public roads are simply overcrowded with vehicles, and finding a free parking space can often take longer than the trip itself.

The density of cars in the city is quite high, so it’s not so easy to park safely without damaging your own or, even worse, someone else’s car. And if we are talking about beginners who have not yet gotten used to the dimensions of their car, then parking in a metropolis can be called a kind of test.

Progress does not stand still, especially when it comes to the automotive industry. Modern cars are stuffed with a large number of auxiliary systems that help motorists cope with one or another task every day.

You all probably know these assistants, including the anti-lock braking system ABS, climate control, cruise control, exchange rate stabilization system and even special assistants that help you park safely.

In fact, the list is quite large and it would take quite a long time to list all these useful things, but, in my opinion, this list would be incomplete without two quite popular and useful assistants - a rear view camera and parking sensors. It is these assistants that allow even a beginner to safely park or drive in reverse.

In this article, I would like to talk in more detail about these useful devices and answer the question that worries many motorists: “ Which is better, parking sensors or a rear view camera? “.

If you already know the answer to this question, you can move on to reading other, equally interesting articles on our website.

If this dilemma remains relevant for you, stay with us, it will be interesting!

Many will answer this question unequivocally, arguing that the camera is more advanced and allows you to clearly see what is behind the car. However, do not rush to conclusions; towards the end of the article you will see that not everything is so simple and both candidates have both pros and cons.

Let me start with the fact that cars began to be equipped with parking sensors or parking radars earlier than cameras; the latter came a little later and seriously pushed aside their less advanced counterparts. However, parking sensors have not completely disappeared; they are still popular and are installed on many cars.

What is parking sensors?

This term hides a system consisting of sensors (from 2 to 6, sometimes even 8) that scan the distance to the nearest obstacle and notify the driver about the distance to it.

The notification may vary, depending on the parking sensor manufacturer and modification; as a rule, it is an audible warning or an electronic display on which indicators of different colors light up as you approach an obstacle.

Rear View Camera

As I said above, the camera appeared a little later, but quickly gained popularity among motorists.

A characteristic feature of the camera is that it is capable of not only reporting an obstacle in the path of the car, but also being able to show it, so that the driver can estimate the distance to a particular obstacle with his own eyes.

A rear view camera consists of a monitor (this can be either a standard monitor or a monitor included with the camera), wiring and the camera itself, which films the situation behind the car.

Now let's move on to listing the pros and cons of the contenders.

So, parking sensors are advantages

  • Low cost (even the most expensive kit is unlikely to cost more than an “average” camera).
  • Does not require display installation. This point is very important, because in some cases replacing the standard radio is quite difficult and expensive, in addition, many car owners are not ready to change the interior of their car so radically for the sake of the camera.
  • Able to “see” objects at any time of the day. Unlike a camera, which is ineffective at night, parking sensors are able to clearly detect objects without any lighting at all.

Disadvantages of parking radars

  • Low information content. The camera is able to show a picture, which allows you to more clearly assess the situation from behind. There are often cases when the parking sensors did not notice a thin tree growing in the path of the car or a piece of reinforcement sticking out of the ground. The same applies to any other obstacles such as stones, roots or unevenness that can be found somewhere outside the city or on vacation. The fact is that the sensors scan a certain area and if the object somehow misses it, then it is quite possible that you will hit and damage your car.
  • In winter, when a large amount of snow falls, parking sensors, especially the front ones, can “go crazy” about untidy snow, regarding it as an obstacle and incessantly reporting this with an annoying signal.
  • Need to drill the bumper. This is a rather serious disadvantage, since the camera can be installed without the need to “spoil” anything. In the case of parking sensors, you cannot avoid drilling the bumper in at least 3 places. If you want to install parking sensors in the front, then you will also have to remove and “spoil” the front bumper.

Now about the benefits of a rear view camera

  • Information content. As I already said, the camera allows you to see everything “with your own eyes,” and this, as you know, is always better than hearing. It's more visual and convenient.
  • The camera is more modern and goes well with standard multimedia systems equipped with monitors. If your car has a monitor, you won’t need to buy anything extra; all you need to do is install the camera and connect it to the monitor.
  • There is no need to drill anything. More convenient installation of the camera itself is an obvious plus. You do not need to remove the bumper or drill into it to install the sensors.

Camera Disadvantages

  • High price. If you want to install a high-quality rear view camera, then be prepared for the fact that it will cost you a pretty penny. And if you also don’t have a monitor in your salon, but you want an advanced one and an HD picture, then it will cost a lot of money.
  • The camera is practically “blind” at night. If you back up in an unlit place, then in most cases the camera will not help you.
  • In autumn and winter, the camera freezes over, and as a result, you most likely won’t see anything when parking. During rainfall or after a long journey, the camera becomes covered with dirt and requires regular cleaning, which is not always convenient.
  • Installation. If you do not have a standard display, then installing a rear view camera will require certain difficulties, since you will have to integrate a monitor into your interior. The problem is that the monitor needs to be placed somewhere; it may not fit or fit into the interior of your car. In addition, if the monitor takes the place of the radio, then you will also have to think about something... Although there are options here, you, for example, can buy a rear view camera with a rear view mirror into which the camera image will be displayed. This will partially solve the problem.

In general, that's all. It seems like I didn't miss anything.

Sorry that I touched on the issue only superficially, without delving into the operating principle of the devices and did not consider specific models. My goal was to compare the two types of devices and list their main “pros” and “cons,” while it is always up to you to choose which of these two options is better. That’s all for me, thank you for your attention and see you again at Question Auto. Bye!

Rear view camera - how to install it yourself - Behind the Wheel magazine

How to avoid strabismus

The parking assistance system consists of two main components - a video camera (this is a kind of eye of the system) and a device with a display on which the image is displayed.

Related materials

All car video cameras have a similar design: a set of lenses plus a light-sensitive matrix. They produce color images of not very high quality - due to the peculiarities of video signal processing, the resolution usually does not exceed 0.3 megapixels. But this is quite enough to recognize a parking post or a pedestrian. It is better to install the camera higher: the view is wider and less dirty.

One of the options for its placement on station wagons, hatchbacks, crossovers, and vans is an additional brake light cover or cover. For this purpose, a mortise camera with latches or an external camera with a bracket is suitable. You need to adjust the “eye” so that the bottom part of the image on the screen includes the outermost element of your car - the bumper, tailgate or towbar ball.

If you don’t want to bother with installing the camera, buy a license frame with a built-in “eye”. However, this option is only suitable for cars on which the number plate is located high. If the registration plate is installed on the bumper, it is better to abandon the idea - from a half-meter height it is difficult to perceive what is happening, and besides, the peephole will constantly go blind.

In order not to encounter “squint,” you should not install such a camera on cars where the number plate is offset from the center. These are, for example, vans with hinged doors and SUVs with side-opening doors. For many cars they offer video cameras combined with a license plate light.

They are the easiest to install, they look aesthetically pleasing, but with similar characteristics they are more expensive than others.

Radio module - 1500 rubles Radio module - 1500 rubles Mirror with a built-in five-inch monitor - 1,500 rublesMirror with a built-in five-inch monitor - 1,500 rubles Video camera - about 2500 rublesVideo camera - about 2500 rubles

When selecting a camera, you should pay attention to the video signal standard - PAL or NTSC. The standards of the camera and display should not differ, otherwise, as they say, “there will be no cinema.”

Where to look?

The camera has been selected - we go to the receiving devices, which display the image from the video camera. This could even be a DVR that has a second (rear) camera and displays the image from it on its display. It’s just very difficult to see anything on such a small screen.

It’s another matter when the picture is displayed on a 2 DIN multimedia device (standard or installed additionally). It is usually equipped with a display with a diagonal of six to seven inches and allows you to connect a rear view camera. All that remains is to provide a signal to this device, and also inform it that reverse gear is engaged.

We attach the mirror with the screen to the standard one, and hide the radio signal receiver under the interior lighting. We attach the mirror with the screen to the standard one, and hide the radio signal receiver under the interior lighting. The radio module-transmitter was placed under the door trim.The radio module-transmitter was placed under the door trim.

Another option for installing the camera is behind glass. A long wiper (400 mm, longer than the standard one) provides it with a good view, and the heated glass protects it from fogging.

Another option for installing the camera is behind glass. A long wiper (400 mm, longer than the standard one) provides it with a good view, and the heated glass protects it from fogging.

They also offer separate monitors with a screen diagonal of no more than five inches, which are mounted on the instrument panel. But a modern car’s front panel is already crammed with equipment. Therefore, another solution seems interesting, quite inexpensive (and compact): you can use a rear-view mirror with a monitor that comes to life only when power and a video signal are supplied.

You need to connect two devices with a video cable. This task is quite troublesome, since the cable will have to be routed through a moving connection - an opening door or trunk lid. We recommend laying the cable under the roof trim: it is much easier than making your way along the thresholds of the car, where the non-standard cable may be subject to chafing.

A more convenient solution is to transmit the image over a radio channel. We purchase a so-called radio module. It receives power, as well as a video signal, from the camera and transmits it via radio frequency to the receiving device, which outputs the signal to the display. The radio module will cost one and a half thousand, but will save time during installation.

To ensure the correct viewing angle, a rubber wedge had to be placed. But now the camera sees everything. To ensure the correct viewing angle, I had to place a rubber wedge. But now the camera sees everything. In order not to drill the body, we install the camera in the additional brake light. In order not to drill the body, we install the camera in the additional brake light.

Practice

We purchased two video systems and tried to install them on a Lada Largus station wagon.

Its rear end gets dirty quickly, so one camera was placed at the top of the tailgate and the other behind the heated glass to look out through the wiper's area.

The “glazed” camera was secured to the door flange with screw clamps, but you can simply glue it to the glass. The camera should be placed in the same manner on SUVs, crossovers and commercial vans with a nearly vertical tailgate.

The signal transmission from the video camera to the front of the car was organized through a radio module. The video camera and radio module can be powered from the reversing light.

But in order not to pull the “positive” wire through the corrugation from the lamp to the door, we took power from the rear wiper motor. On its block there is a “minus” and a “plus”, which appears immediately when the ignition is turned on. The camera and transmitter will operate continuously as long as the ignition is turned on.

There is no need to worry about the resource - street video cameras generally work around the clock for many years.

Now you can confidently maneuver in reverse.

Now you can confidently maneuver in reverse.

They decided to display the image on a rearview mirror with a five-inch screen. The radio module was placed under the roof trim, getting there through a hole under the interior lamp, which is installed on almost all cars.

It is better to power the mirror and the front radio module from the wiring harness going to the rear of the car. It is necessary, armed with an electrical circuit or a tester, to find the “positive” wire to the reversing light - now the picture in the mirror will come to life only when “reverse” is turned on. And you will never make an emergency stern mooring.

How to accurately choose a miracle device for parking - a rear view camera?

Home » Assistive systems » How to accurately choose a miracle device for parking - a rear view camera?

A standard rear view camera is used to transmit images from the lens to a display located inside the car, usually on the instrument panel. The gadget, with or without backlight, can be connected to an existing audio system monitor, navigator, or an additional display.

It should be noted that today a standard rear view camera is installed on most modern cars, but here a lot depends on the configuration.

If the device is equipped with backlighting and a variable viewing angle, the driver will be able to park the vehicle without any problems even in poor visibility conditions.

Video from the gadget on a standard monitor

When purchasing a rear view camera, you must rely on the following parameters:

  1. One of the main points is the viewing angle. It should be more than 110 degrees - best if 150 or 170, this will provide the most optimal view.
  2. It is important that the image is transmitted to the display in mirror image, otherwise operating the device may cause difficulties.
  3. It is necessary that the device is resistant to various environmental influences. That is, the camera must function normally in any weather conditions, be it fog, heat or snowstorm. Pay attention to the operating temperature range.
  4. The clarity of the picture, which is determined by resolution. If you prefer more affordable options, then their image resolution will be 720*576 or so. More expensive options work with HD or FullHD.
  5. The presence of markings, thanks to this, the device will allow you to park the car with an accuracy of up to 0.1 m. The most convenient option is a rear view camera with dynamic markings.
  6. Thanks to additional infrared illumination, you can achieve a better picture quality, in particular, when parking your car in the dark.

Video from the gadget on the rearview mirror

It should also be noted that the device matrix is considered a rather important aspect.

It can be manufactured using one of the technologies:

  1. KPOM. In practice, such devices do not function effectively enough in low light, and the image quality leaves much to be desired. However, the matrices of such devices have a more progressive scan, that is, the display will receive sequentially both low-quality and higher-quality signal lines. In addition, the cost of such devices is much lower.
  2. CCD. They are more expensive in price, but this is due to the transfer of higher quality images to the display, even in very dimly lit areas. The disadvantages include higher energy consumption, as well as slow operating speed.

What are they?

The modern electronics market is actually teeming with different types of cameras; they can be divided among themselves according to their installation location:

  1. Universal gadgets. They are installed in places specially designed for this purpose.
  2. Cameras built into the license plate frame, and this frame must come with the device.
  3. Standard systems. They are installed at the stage of assembling the car at the factory (the author of the video is the Made in a Garage channel).

Now briefly about the features of each type. Universal systems have multiple advantages, especially when compared with standard devices.

In particular, they have a simpler structure, so their installation should not be difficult.

In addition, they are usually not very expensive, especially since such devices are usually sealed and resistant to damage, scratches, and moisture. On sale you can also find devices designed for mounting in a bumper.

Characteristic disadvantages of such devices:

  • installation of the device will require drilling the bumper;
  • poor protection against damage;
  • The device will not allow you to adjust the viewing angle.

As for devices built into the license plate, this is a simpler option. Since the frame is included, it can be installed without any problems instead of the standard one, especially since the car enthusiast will have the opportunity to independently adjust the viewing angle.

In addition, installation of such a device is possible on a car of any model, which is why it is considered universal. The temperature range of use is on average from -30 to +50 degrees.

One of the disadvantages is the ease of access to the device, as a result of which anyone can dismantle or damage the device (the author of the video is the volodamdes channel).

One of the best options is standard devices. They are usually mounted in the tailgate handle or license plate light. But the installation location may be different; it all depends on the manufacturer. Thanks to the presence of infrared illumination, which is found in all standard devices, parking will not cause problems at night.

The main advantages of such systems:

  • are produced taking into account the characteristics of a particular vehicle;
  • equipped with lighting;
  • During installation, the manufacturer himself sets the required viewing angle, taking into account all the nuances.

In addition to the three options listed above, you can also find devices with a display built into the rearview mirror. But this option is less convenient for the consumer. As for the mounting method, the device can be built-in or retractable.

1. Three built-in cameras2. Gadget in the rearview mirror3. Retractable gadget

Connection

A built-in or retractable rear view camera is connected to the radio display, navigator or additional monitor. For installation and connection, use the diagram that comes with the kit.

Briefly about how to install a built-in or pop-up camera:

  1. First, you must turn off the power to the battery to prevent a short circuit during installation.
  2. Then the display is installed, if it is optional. If the camera will be connected to the radio screen, then we skip this step. The screen is installed on the center console.
  3. Next, the lens itself is installed - it is mounted either in the car bumper or in the license plate frame, depending on the type. When installing it in the bumper, you will have to remove it and drill the corresponding holes. If we are talking about the number frame, then you just need to replace it.
  4. After this the wiring is installed. The power cable from the lens must be connected to the reverse optics. The wire transmitting the image is brought out into the car interior under the trim and routed to the monitor, after which it is connected to it.
  5. Now all you have to do is connect the battery and check the functionality of the gadget.

Price issue

The cheapest version of the gadget will cost the buyer about 600 rubles. It will be a Chinese camera with low image quality. Higher quality gadgets will cost around 5-6 thousand rubles.

How to choose a rear view camera

How to choose a rear view camera

Rear view cameras help the motorist do many useful things:

  • park carefully in the parking lot;
  • visually control what is happening behind the car;
  • give confidence and a sense of control of the space behind the car in order to avoid causing damage to your own and someone else’s car;
  • Thanks to infrared illumination, they make it easy to park in the dark.
  • reducing time spent on parking.

Unpleasant moments that a rear view camera could help avoid

Real view from the rear camera

Infrared illumination

Infrared illumination is a combination of LEDs that emit light in a different light range, which allows you to illuminate a space of up to 5-10 meters in low light conditions. The image is displayed in black and white.

The camera, thanks to the built-in light sensor, automatically determines at what moment to turn on the infrared illumination. Rear view cameras with LED backlight are not very effective, they are more of a panacea, so don’t try to buy them - it’s better even without them than with them.

When there is sufficient light, the rear view camera with IR illumination shows a color image, and when there is insufficient light, the image becomes black and white. There is a minor drawback: the video picture is not so rich in colors.

Installation

A rear view camera can be installed on almost all vehicles. At the moment, prices for rear view cameras are very affordable, which allows people with different income levels to purchase them.

Installing such a camera does not cause any difficulties: when you engage reverse (reverse gear), the monitor and rear view camera turn on automatically without additional manipulations.

Weather. Rear view cameras have a metal or plastic housing that is adapted to weather and temperature conditions.

Image sensor and screen resolution

The screen resolution is usually 628x582, and very high quality is not required for this device. The color image sensor is either CCD or CMOS.

CCD sensors – they transmit a higher-quality picture in color and see an order of magnitude better in the dark “at the level of human gas, or even brighter”; the camera automatically makes white balance, so that with sufficient light the image will be bright.

Their disadvantage is their higher price compared to CMOS sensors. The size of these cameras is approximately the size of a matchbox; if it is a peephole, it has an elongated shape. Although technology has stepped forward and CCD cameras have become quite compact in size.

The CMOS sensor is not very dark-loving. This is easily compensated for by infrared illumination and rear lights.

An insignificant drawback is that the image quality is noticeably lower than that of CCD: weak ripples and not rich colors, this is not even noticeable on small monitors, and the camera is needed for parking, not video recording.

 The light sensitivity of the CCD sensor is an order of magnitude higher than CMOS - 0.1 lux versus CCD - 0.01 lux (the lower the lux number, the better). As a rule, CMOS ones are on sale, and CCD appears in the inscription - this is a common marketing ploy to raise the price.

One more thing, don’t believe the characteristics about luxes - they are often very inflated or written in bold, since devices for measuring luxes work with integer numbers, plus there is an error of about 3-5% and numbers so small do not appear there and this data is of no use don't check.

Video format

There are three of them - PAL or NTSC, SECAM. These parameters of the output monitor and camera must match, otherwise the image quality will not be displayed correctly: ripples, black and white images, shaky images. The NTSC format is most often found on these devices; they are increasingly being sold for two or three video formats, so the mismatch of these formats is a very rare occurrence.

The power supply for rear view cameras is 9-14 Volts, so when installed on a car that has an on-board power supply of 24 Volts (24 V), converters are required

Dirt. Everything can be easily wiped off with a rag.

In this case, you can use a trick: if you have a rear window washer, you can remove an additional nozzle for washing the camera, so that when you wash the glass, you can wash the camera without extra effort.

Don’t dream of installing a camera behind glass inside the car, as it will glare on itself, due to the large viewing angle, car details will appear in the image, and determining the distance to an obstacle will be more difficult.

Danger of theft. There is no need to worry about this, since a camera without wires is of no value. If there are such cases, they are isolated. It is easier to steal a rear view mirror, since it has a higher price and liquidity.

Rear view cameras have nothing to do with dash cams. They don't match:

  • voltage;
  • plugs;
  • principle of inclusion;
  • plus they mirror from left to right. This is thought out in order to quickly adapt information for the perception of space by your brain (there are models with a “mirroring” function on/off)

The viewing angle on these cameras is quite large, from 120-180 (diagonal degrees), which allows you to display almost complete information about the situation behind the car on the monitor screen.

Parking lines displaying the distance are displayed by the camera itself, and not by the monitor. The scale provides information intuitively, i.e.

After some time of using it, you understand which scale displays which distance.

There are models of reversing cameras with parking sensors in the same housing; they are capable of displaying information with the distance to an obstacle, as well as additionally notifying with an audio signal.

Kinds. Depending on the type and purpose of manufacture, there are three types of cameras:

1. Regular ones. They are produced by the manufacturer of the car itself, as a rule, their price is high, they are mounted in a specific place and are not at all noticeable.

2. Manufactured for certain models by an electronics factory in place of one of the lamps to illuminate the car number plate. Because of this, these cameras are practically invisible and do not require special space for the camera. At the same time, they have a lantern to illuminate the room. Disadvantages - most often they are produced only for popular models of car brands.

3.Universal. These are cameras with a beautiful metal or plastic strip, with a frame with a number, they have built-in camera eyes, frames on rotating brackets. They can be installed both on trucks and on simple cars that other cameras could not fit.

Universal ones can be divided into three types:

  • invoices have a fixed size;
  • on the pin - the wire is located inside the pin;
  • mortise-eyes.

Connection method. All rear view cameras can be divided into two types of communication:

Wired cameras have a cord that runs from the back of the car to the monitor to display the image. The advantages of such cameras are reliability and good image quality; slightly lower price compared to wireless. The disadvantage is that it is difficult to pull the wire under the interior trim.

Wireless . They have a transmitting module located at the rear of the vehicle and a receiving module located directly in front of the receiving device. Wireless cameras, as a rule, are “tailored” for navigators.

The receiving module contains a power cord and a video cord (2.5 mm Mini Jack cable). There are also modules for RCA-bell-tulip monitors. Wireless modules are not suitable for radios and monitors with an excitation wire.

Converting a wireless camera to a wired one is not difficult.

Wireless cameras should not be classified as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices; there is nothing in common between them.

There are even more informative rear view systems than conventional cameras. They come complete with parking sensors or are all-round cameras. Such cameras can be standard or installed in specialized workshops. Such a device has a very high price.

Reminder about rear view cameras. The cameras heat up significantly (up to 60 degrees C) at the junction of the power supply and video cord, so there is no need to worry about this event. Display samples that work 8 hours a day for more than six months continue to work properly.

Well, the last point about the cameras is the front cameras. They are installed on the front of the car in the bumper or in the car label. These cameras are turned on forcibly, because, unlike rear cameras, which turn on from the reverse lights. Front cameras often come without markings, and they also do not mirror the image.
