Since the first car appeared in the world, the car owner has had two problems - how to use the car for as long as possible without repairs and how to keep it from being stolen.

During the Soviet era, very few people could afford cars; it was enough to install locks on the doors and an ignition switch to prevent theft. With the increase in income and the number of car owners, the number of thefts has also increased.

Automotive concerns were faced with the question of creating such protection for cars that it would be impossible, or at least difficult and problematic, to break into and steal. Car alarm kits have appeared.

As they improved, innovative security devices - immobilizers - were connected to transport security. Nowadays, passenger vehicles are initially equipped with a standard immobilizer, but installing another, secret device turns the risk of car theft into a fiction.

Immobilizer - reliable protection against theft

Thus, a modern automobile security system in a car includes means for notifying the car owner, a standard immobilizer, an alarm system and mechanical security means. The effectiveness of car protection against theft and theft is enhanced by several such devices installed independently of each other.

Immobilizer components

A modern blocking device consists of a complex of elements, the main ones being:

  • ECU is a control unit that is a receiver of signals from all components of the car, their processing and response;

Immobilizer: operating principle

An immobilizer is a small electronic device that is activated when an attempt is made to break into the vehicle's security system.

The principle of operation of the immobilizer is to instantly block the most important systems and circuits of the automotive system, including fuel and electrical, by the microprocessor unit, thereby interfering with the operation of the gearbox. This shutdown makes it impossible to steal a vehicle, since the engine will not start.

The immobilizer device is subject to the following principles:

  • One part is built into the car key, the other into the car structure;
  • If the key is inserted into the ignition switch, the device begins to determine its identity and allows you to drive the car if the owner’s identity is confirmed. The fuel line opens and fuel can easily flow from the tank into the machine’s power system;
  • If the immobilizer is removed by an attacker in an attempt to steal or rob, the engine will not start, since the relay will require a command from the microprocessor to close the broken circuit. Such a signal is not possible by shorting the wires.

Types of immobilizer

There are several types of immobilizer:

  • Contactless long-range from 5 to 10 m. The reading unit of the device is mounted under the dashboard; the compact signal transmitter is read at a distance and must be worn separately from car keys. If a forceful seizure takes place or violent actions occur against the driver, after a specified period of time the device stops the engine;
  • Non-contact small radius. The receiver is built into the under-torpedo space. When the driver gets into the car, he needs to bring the transmitter to a certain place and only after that will it be possible to start the engine. This type of immobilizer does not have an anti-burglary function. Among the disadvantages, mention should be made of the mandatory ritual for starting the engine;
  • Contact. Supplemented with the function of controlling the electromechanical hood lock. The receiving antenna is mounted in the interior trim and the immobilizer is controlled via a transponder - a card in the form of a credit card or key fob. Such a device is called a “tag” in motorist jargon. Cards are issued with large and short range.

There are immobilizer models for recognizing the car owner using a fingerprint.

The difference between the types of immobilizers also lies in the mode of action:

  • The car is initially locked to make movement impossible;
  • You can start the car and drive away, but after the scheduled time the device will work and turn off the engine.

Pros and cons of using immobilizers

After car owners understand the concept and operating principle of immobilizers, they are interested in the advantages and disadvantages of using these protective devices. Among the positive qualities of the immobilizer, the following should be noted:

  • Stealth. It is quite difficult to visually determine the presence of an immobilizer in a vehicle. The alarm is designed to scare off robbers and car thieves, and the immobilizer makes theft impossible, since its operating principle is unpredictable for attackers;
  • Complete impossibility of blocking the immobilizer. The connection point of its unit can be difficult to find, and its principle of operation is unknown to hijackers;
  • Silent operation and high degree of reliability;

One of the disadvantages of using immobilizers is their operation on batteries, which must be replaced periodically in a timely manner, since without them the device becomes absolutely useless. Immobilizers also have a radio channel that is not protected from scanning. The consolation is the fact that the very small range of the device makes reading the code unrealistic.

Immobilizer installation

The car owner will be helped to choose the best immobilizer and buy it at a dealership or at a licensed service station or car service center.

In a store, there is a risk of purchasing a low-quality device, the defect of which will appear only after installation. The case will end with paid dismantling, and time will be lost to return the device.

If the purchase and installation of an immobilizer takes place at a car dealership, the responsibility will be entirely with the contractor.

Operation of the device requires compliance with several simple rules:

  • Two active keys are available - one with you, the second in stock at home;
  • The transponder will last longer and be recognized at the maximum distance if it is oriented parallel to the antenna plane;
  • It is prohibited to carry an electronic key in a common keychain;
  • Installation of the immobilizer is carried out only by authorized dealers;
  • The operating instructions are required to be read.

Disabling the immobilizer

Despite the technical perfection of the immobilizer, situations may arise that require it to be disabled. For example, it may break down and interfere with the operation of an additional car security system.
