More advanced versions of ACC systems include two controllers. The first is used to determine speed and distance over a long distance, and the second - over a short distance.

The long range operates at speeds up to 30 km/h, and the short range allows the car to drive until it stops.

The presence of controllers allows you to expand the functionality of the system and ensures its use when driving at different speeds.

The microprocessor module is designed to receive and process information coming from controllers and other additional components, allowing to determine:

  • steering wheel rotation angle;
  • curve radius;
  • car driving speed;
  • vehicle acceleration when cornering;
  • distance, as well as the speed of the vehicle in front.

How cruise control works

The principle of operation of the system on a manual and automatic is identical, but there are certain nuances. In the simplest design, the design includes a servo drive connected to the throttle adjustment mechanism.

This element is responsible for the flow of gas into the injection or carburetor unit. The servo drive itself is a negative feedback device used to control a mechanical assembly.

If the car is moving at a constant speed, the gas pedal is located at a certain fixed angle. When the cruise control system is activated, the microprocessor module remembers the position of the pedal, which allows you to fix a specific speed.

While driving, the vehicle's speed may decrease, particularly when driving on an incline. Then the microprocessor module transmits a command to the servo drive device, as a result of which the latter changes the pedal angle and increases the fuel supply.

When driving downhill, the vehicle's speed will increase. Then the microprocessor device sends an impulse to the servo drive unit about the need to change the position of the gas pedal angle, and the fuel supply drops. Such actions occur until the mechanical stop appears at idle speed. This helps the car's engine brake.

The program installed in the module allows you to compare the information received with that specified by the driver. In accordance with the processed data, a driving algorithm is determined. The pulses will be sent to the on-board computer, which will allow you to change the speed limit or stop the car.

Features of cruise control on cars with a manual transmission

If the system is installed on a machine with “mechanics”, then the sector may rest against the limiting element. Then the user of the car should independently move the gearshift control lever to a lower speed. In cars with manual transmission, drivers must apply the brakes themselves if necessary.

In the case of an automatic transmission, the driver does not need to change gears, everything will happen automatically.

Adaptive cruise control

ACC is a more advanced version of the cruise control system. Its presence allows you not only to maintain a certain driving speed at a specified level, but also to control the situation on the road.

To perform this function, the system is equipped with additional controllers, cameras and radar devices. By activating ACC, the consumer can accurately “link” the car to the vehicle ahead.

The system will monitor the driving speed of the car in front and change its speed if necessary, maintaining the appropriate distance.

To implement this function, the cruise control device is supplemented with cameras and sensors. Separate systems on different vehicles can evaluate road markings. Such devices control traffic and prevent the car from moving from one lane to another.

Some types of adaptive cruise controls provide the ability to change driving speed. The procedure for adjusting the speed limit is carried out step by step at intervals of 1 to 2 kilometers per hour.

When implementing this function, the system does not care how heavily the machine is loaded and whether it is moving on a slope or uphill. If an emergency situation occurs while driving, adaptive cruise control will warn the driver. For notification, audio or visual signals (LED indicators) are used. Notification can be carried out simultaneously through sound and visual effects.

The adaptive type of system always operates in conjunction with an anti-lock braking device and the ESP system. If one of them does not function, the cruise control will not be activated.

The use of adaptive systems is relevant outside the city, where there is no heavy traffic.

For greater safety, it is recommended to turn on cruise control in driving conditions when all cars are moving at approximately the same speed.

Passive cruise control

The passive version of the system is a simpler device, in particular, we are talking about design features. Passive cruise control provides only the ability to maintain a certain driving speed. Such systems do not include sensors to determine the distance to the vehicle in front.

The principle of operation of the passive version is quite simple. When selecting the required speed mode, the driver activates the system, after which the microprocessor module records this information.

At the moment of fixation, the throttle valve is set to a specific position and does not move anymore. If driving conditions change when the car goes up or down, the controllers warn about this.

The microprocessor module opens or closes the throttle so that the speed of movement does not change.

How to use cruise control?

Cruise control systems are not designed for use in traffic jams or other difficult conditions; it is unsafe to do so.

The algorithm for using the system as a whole is as follows:

  1. The driver accelerates the car up to a certain point. You need to decide on your driving speed. Many systems allow activation at a minimum of 40 km/h.
  2. The device is activated. To do this, use a special button located on the steering wheel or center console. Usually the key has an indicator in the form of a tachometer or an arrow. After activation, the corresponding icon will appear on the control panel.
  3. To put the speed control system into effect, click the Set key. A special lever can be used for activation.
  4. The system is being activated. The symbol on the control panel should change color from white to green.
  5. If the system allows you to adjust the speed mode, special keys are used for this. They are usually marked with the symbols “+” and “-”.

The operation of the system allows for more convenient control of the car, but cruise control has not only advantages, but also disadvantages.

Advantages

Pros of using cruise control:

  1. The driver has the opportunity to rest while driving. Useful for those who often travel long distances by car.
  2. Installation of cruise control is possible on any type of car; the transmission does not matter. Ready-made systems can be designed to operate with any type of power unit.
  3. If desired, the consumer can set cruise control independently.
  4. If the driving speed is stable, fuel consumption will be less.
  5. The system itself is an effective option for ensuring passive safety. Adaptive cruise control options allow you to maintain the required distance between cars to prevent a possible collision.

Flaws

Main disadvantages of the system:

  1. If there is a malfunction, the system may not function correctly. If one of the controllers fails or the distance sensor is clogged, the ECU will regard this as driving at an unsafe distance. Traffic speeds may drop sharply, and in some cases cars stop right on the road. Stopping suddenly can lead to an accident.
  2. With constant use of cruise control, the driver becomes less alert. This may affect the safety of the car owner and passengers.

Diagnosing cruise control faults

To check the operation of the system, do the following:

  1. The safety device is being diagnosed. If an element fails, it must be replaced. The fuse is located in the common mounting block or in the engine compartment. If it is under the hood, then the component should be labeled Fuse Box.
  2. The vacuum device is being checked. When the engine is running, it should receive vacuum. Vacuum is supplied through a special thin pipe.
  3. A diagnosis is made of the tightness of the pipe that goes from the vacuum device to the brake pedal. This tube is necessary to deactivate the system when the brake is depressed. Diagnostics is performed by disconnecting the hose and pumping air out of the system. If the diaphragm element does not hold, this indicates a loss of vacuum.
  4. To check, you should perform a wiring integrity diagnostic. We are talking about power lines that go to the control keys or lever. To check, the chain is tested. You can visually assess whether the wires are intact.
  5. The contact elements of the control system are diagnosed. Oxidation of the contacts will result in loss of signals. It is recommended to clean and lubricate the elements.
  6. The limit switch device on the electrical circuit connected to the brake is checked.
  7. A diagnosis is made of the correct operation and serviceability of the vacuum pumping device.

In practice, the causes of system failure are usually due to damage to the insulating layer on the cables or vacuum leakage from the system. Some car models allow you to perform self-diagnosis of the functioning of the device.

Self-diagnosis procedure using the example of a Honda SUV:

  1. The ignition system is turned on.
  2. The cruise control is activated by clicking the On button.
  3. If the indicator light on the control panel lights up after pressing, the diagnosis continues.
  4. The Resume Accel button on the steering wheel of the car is clicked. It must be pressed for three seconds.
  5. If there is no fault, the indicator light will turn on for three seconds and then go off for two seconds. If there are any breakdowns, the light will display fault codes by flashing.
  6. To deactivate the self-diagnostic mode, you need to start driving and accelerate to 16 km/h. You can turn off the system by clicking the Off button.
