But with the new Elantra, everything is simpler: to remember what it looks like, you just need to imagine any modern Jaguar and simplify it three times. Which, however, is also not bad.
But you sit inside and you are again covered with an indistinct gray veil. Hyundai interior designers are great, of course, for gradually moving away from overt Asianness and learning restraint, but even this modern Elantra interior flies out of your head faster than a 7.62 caliber bullet.
All that was deposited in the mind during a week of driving were seemingly good materials, seemingly tolerable ergonomics and the nanoscreen of the micro-multimedia “caressed” by Sasha Miroshkin.
However, even he didn’t particularly irritate me - simply because I’m the same person who connects the phone to the system once, and then just listens to music and doesn’t use anything else.
Don't get me wrong: by Hyundai standards, the new Elantra is truly progress. It has become more convenient, more thoughtful, more balanced and simply better in all respects.
But I can’t help but feel that the guys from Kia were ahead of their colleagues in the concern by a couple of years, and continue to be ahead. And it’s no coincidence that Peter Schreyer (I hope he’ll forgive me for taking his name in vain for the billionth time) is now responsible for the design of both brands at once.
Because outright mistakes seem to have been sorted out, now it’s time to be remembered and cultivate the notorious brand identity.
Moreover, everything is ok with the hardware. The proven pairing of a two-liter 149-horsepower engine and a six-speed automatic transmission is quite peppy and does not present any surprises, and the chassis tuners finally stopped being thrown from hot to cold (or from jelly to concrete), and they managed to find a really good balance. The Elantra is comfortable, handles shock, and doesn’t make passengers sick.
Even in the settings of the electric booster, something similar to natural, linear and logical feedback has appeared, allowing you to immediately turn the steering wheel to the desired angle and not have to search for a trajectory. For driving - definitely a test! But this still doesn’t help the Elantra to be remembered. For me, it remains a Hyundai with a Jaguar face. Which, however, is also not bad.
For a four.
“Mazda” and “Skoda” get maximum points from me: the first - for the fact that this is the only car in the quartet that I want to take for a test again. And the second - because she is the only one who has nothing objectively to complain about.
And the Corolla, to the angry cries of Toyota fans, only gets a three. I will not hide that this is a purely subjective assessment based on a paradoxical set-up.
Sorry, but I can't imagine a person who could buy a car with LED headlights, but without basic light-rain sensors, and then say that it's cool.

It is more expensive than the other participants, smaller, tighter, slower, does not tolerate 92 gasoline, it is “classically” noisy and harsh, and its popularity among car thieves shakes the owner’s nerves and forces him to take a double dose of sedatives once a year, opening another bill from insurance.
Everything is true, but why, if I have the keys to three more excellent cars, do I want to return to Mazda? Why, being in a sober mind and a solid memory, the facts that should lead directly from the “three rubles” to competitors suddenly become not so important?
Maybe because I want to approach the choice of a car from the position of a living person, and not a calculator. And in this case, you have to include emotions. And here – in emotions – lies the main advantage and the main problem of this Japanese company.
Having come to a car dealership and “saw through” all the shortcomings of the three-ruble ruble, many will probably go to the same “Toyota” if they want a “reliable Japanese”, or to “Skoda”, where the verified price-space ratio in the cabin-equipment- power plants.
Everything is there before your eyes - liters, horsepower and columns of numbers in the price list, but you cannot see the emotions in the car that is standing on the dealer’s lot.
A five-minute introductory drive in a Mazda3 won’t help either, and may even scare you away - the car doesn’t offer a smooth ride. To penetrate and feel these very emotions, you need to live with a “three ruble”. At least a week.
And a lot can become clearer this week.
For example, the fact that, despite the terrible figure in the “acceleration to hundreds” column, the Mazda3 has a perfectly tuned pair of engine and gearbox, which in the city surprisingly does not make you feel as deprived of the benefits of civilization as the driver of the ancient dying Icarus. And at the same time, the “treshka” remains the most economical of our four: 8.2 liters per hundred kilometers – my best result. Or about nine liters, if you constantly stomp on the right pedal.
The car has natural and correct reactions - everything suddenly turns out to be configured exactly the way you want. I love the attention to detail that makes me want to come back here.
I like it even more than the crazy acceleration or the extra hundred liters of free space.
What I don’t like about the “three ruble” is the small digitization of the speedometer, the non-illuminated buttons on the driver’s door (guys, as many as you can!) and the lack of electrically heated windshield. That's actually all I want to complain about. Oh yes, also the price, of course.

Corolla is, if not a sales leader, then certainly a constant favorite of the public. The reputation of the Japanese “corolla” (as Corolla is translated) can be the envy of all competitors at once.
The stable success of this sedan is all the more surprising since it has been on the market for several years. Not the second or even the third. And there is no talk about an imminent radical update or the release of a new generation. Well, this is generally typical for them: why change anything if things are going well.
Koreans, on the contrary, work hard and do not shy away from experiments.
Take the design, for example. “Corolla” is very laconic in its simplicity and unpretentiousness. Elantra is pretentious and cutesy and from a distance looks like a huge Solaris. Which, of course, will flatter its owners, but will humiliate buyers of the older model.
It will even scare someone away: who wants to pay close to a million and look like a student driving the first car in his life?
From the outside, both classmate sedans seem to be the same in size. But inside the Elantra there is definitely more: you can sit behind the wheel even in a down jacket. The Corolla will be a little tighter in the shoulders, but only just a little.
But in terms of space on the back seat, Hyundai will give everyone a head start: not only today’s opponent, but, perhaps, also other classmates, such as: Jetta, Cruze, Octavia. A giant with broad shoulders and long legs could really sit behind you. The Corolla's rear cabin is slightly smaller in the shoulders and legs. But let's go ahead.
Purely ergonomically, the Corolla is clearer and simpler. Look, at Hyundai, for example, climate control is entrusted to a bunch of small, small buttons, which, moreover, are moved to the very bottom of the console. While on the go, poking small buttons at random is inconvenient!
But in terms of finishing materials, Hyundai is ahead: instead of rather dull cheap plastic, there is elegant plastic interspersed with “aluminum-like” accents and soft rubberized buttons. Not premium, of course, but it looks and feels very nice.
I personally found the Toyota steering wheel more comfortable than that of its Korean opponent. And the control buttons are somehow more accessible, closer to the “ten to two” grip. 1.6-liter engines and automatic transmissions are not conducive to more or less dynamic driving at all. Especially on snow and ice. In the Corolla, the automatic transmission gets bogged down during acceleration, but in the Elantra it quickly hurries into 6th gear and thereby saves as much as 3 grams of fuel. Or even 8. As a result, the acceleration is sluggish and sad - in one case or another.
But Corolla wins back a little here: having started off and accelerating a little, it picks up speed more quickly than its opponent. Which by that time is already driving in 6th gear.
But the Elantra regains its lost advantages in braking. Its pedal has a little longer travel and is not as sharp, but deceleration is more confident and precise.
In the Corolla, at least on an icy surface, the ABS immediately intervenes hysterically, and the car does not so much slow down as roll.
In terms of chassis settings, in general, there is parity. If only we had tried both cars in the summer. In winter, adjustments appeared.
I have always liked the way the Corolla corners: confidently, with a minimum of roll, clearly, as if according to a pattern. “Elantra” is also good in this sense: predictable, interactive, reliable. But in winter ruts and mixed doubles, an extra “plus” is given to her, and not to the “Japanese”. The Corolla is pulled left and right in a rut, while the Elantra remains calm and confidently straightforward on the same section of the road.
In terms of suspension settings, in general, there is parity. Both opponents have approximately the same smoothness, with an emphasis more on comfort than on a brisk ride. Both have a reserve of both energy consumption and suspension travel, which is noticeable on country roads. The Elantra is maybe a little tougher.
And noisier. Something constantly hums, rustles, and whistles from the wheel arches. All Hyundais have a weak point, by the way - from Solaris to Santa Fe.
Taxiing is more interesting than the Elantra. It has a clearer “zero”; when the steering wheel deviates, there is more obvious feedback. And therefore you can steer it more accurately and confidently. In the Corolla, the steering wheel rotates in some kind of “milk”: whether it’s turned this way or that way is all the same, you can’t feel the angle with your hands.
When refueling at Gazprom Neft, we calculated: fuel consumption in the urban and combined cycles is synchronous: ~7 and 10 liters per hundred for both. With a manual it would be 0.5 liters less. Both do not complain about the AI-92 (the engines have long been adapted for Russia), but the sticker on board the Toyota recommends the 95 G-drive.
In general, if we talk about choosing a golf-class sedan, then the only thing that can advocate for the Corolla today is the reputation of the brand. Purely technically, the “Japanese” is still holding confidently.
But in terms of equipment, decoration, layout and presentation of the product, they are hopelessly behind. Not only inside the Corolla, but in the model line as a whole there is a feeling of severe stagnation. Or, as it is now fashionable to say, “stability”.

The tenth generation of the Japanese Toyota Corolla was released in 2006.
