Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla – what to choose?

Choosing a used car for 400 thousand rubles: Corolla or Civic? – magazine Behind the Wheel

The tenth generation of Toyota Corolla launched at the beginning of 2007 in the status of a sedan and a hatchback, which was called by its own name Auris. Apparently, not only marketers and designers, but also designers were involved in such a radical “breeding” of models in different directions: the hatchback drives and handles much more enthusiastically than the sedan.

Thus, the developers have assigned each of them their place: Corolla is more suitable for sedate and respectable drivers, while Auris was created with youth in mind. But in Russia they traditionally prefer sedans, so the lion's share of model sales fell on the Corolla.

And the name Corolla itself has already become a household name for domestic car enthusiasts.

The car was equipped with two gasoline engines of 1.4 liters (97 hp) and 1.6 liters (124 hp), as well as three turbodiesels of 1.4 liters (89 hp), 2, 0 l (126 hp) and 2.2 l (177 hp).

The standard transmission for gasoline engines and 1.4-liter turbodiesel was a 5-speed manual. The 2.0 and 2.2 liter diesel engines only had a 6-speed manual transmission. As an option for the 1.6-liter unit (124 hp).

) and a 1.4 liter turbodiesel, a robotic “five-speed” was offered. And Russian Toyota dealers have traditionally sold only gasoline modifications.

The eighth generation Honda Civic debuted in the fall of 2005, and Russian sales started in early 2006. The car immediately became a shortage - potential customers signed up in queues, the wait in which stretched for almost a year.

In addition to its bold design, the Civic captivated potential customers with its zippy engines and excellent driving performance, not to mention its innate reliability. Buyers were offered a choice of a sedan and a five-door hatchback, which also differed not only in external and internal design, but also in the design of the chassis.

A three-door car was also available on our market, which was sold exclusively in the charged version of the Type R. Despite the space design of the hatchback, the sedan still turned out to be the most popular in Russia.

The Civic was equipped with 1.4 liter (83 hp), 1.8 liter (140 hp) and 2.0 liter (200 hp) petrol engines, as well as a 2.2 liter turbodiesel (140 hp). In Europe, a hybrid Civic with a 1.3-liter engine and an electric motor (20 hp) was also sold.

c.) instead of a flywheel. We had exclusively gasoline versions in use: sedans and five-door hatchbacks with a 1.8 liter engine (140 hp), and the three-door Type R came only with a 2-liter “four” (200 hp) and a manual 6 -speed transmission.

Today on the Russian market for 400,000 rubles. you can find a Toyota Corolla from 2007–2008, in good technical condition. Most likely, this will be a modification with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and a 5-speed robotic gearbox.

A post-restyling Honda Civic 2008–2009 is sold for the same money.

Moreover, customers do not face the pain of choosing an engine - the small car is equipped only with a 1.8-liter gasoline “four”, paired with which a 5-speed hydromechanical “automatic” will probably be installed.

In the initial Comfort version, the model had four airbags, air conditioning, ABS with EBD system, CD radio, as well as electric windows and heated mirrors. You had to pay extra for an automatic machine.

And the rich Executive package included six airbags, climate and cruise control, a stabilization system, a CD changer and alloy wheels.

The list of options included: leather interior, panoramic roof, xenon headlights, parking sensors, rain and light sensors, navigation system...

Toyota Corolla • 2009 (1.6 l with automatic transmission, mileage 123,500 km)

I used the Corolla for more than five years and sold it in just 1.5 hours after posting the ad. During all this time I only changed consumables. A very reliable, comfortable and very economical car for its size. And, as it turned out, it is in great demand on the market.

At 35 thousand km the pump began to hum. Replacement - 8000 rub. A year later, the wheel bearing failed (RUB 12,000), then the heater fan creaked. The front panel rattles in the sun, and in cold weather it creaks along with the door trim. In general, the Corolla is not worth the money.

The Civic has never failed, despite the Turkish assembly, which is said to be of poor quality. Of course, there is no sound insulation, but the car is economical, reliable, and comfortable. Didn't give me a Civic ride. The landing is low, the paint gets scratched even when the wind blows. The velor in the interior has worn through to holes in three years. The sound of the radio sucks, the optics are weak, the glass is scratched, and with a full load the suspension breaks in every hole. I expected more...

Possible costs for body repairs

The Corolla has a very thin paint coating, which is why scratches and chips quickly appear on the body. The lower parts of the doors are the first to corrode.

Therefore, it is recommended to immediately touch up deep chips with special products, and in winter treat the body with protective polishes or liquid wax (RUB 2,500). Over time, the trunk lock becomes sour (RUB 4,700).

) and the window lift mechanism (RUB 2,800) - they must be periodically lubricated before winter.

On well-worn sedans, rust appears on the rear wheel arches and door frames. Painting one body element - RUB 7,500. Due to the misalignment of the guides, the driver's door windows fell out of their seals. And in the electrics, the heater motor fails (RUB 2,800). The standard battery with a capacity of only 45 Ah lasts only three years.

Possible engine repair costs

Toyota's 1.6 liter engine (1ZR-FE) will last more than 300 thousand km before replacing the aluminum cylinder block. The main thing is not to skimp on quality oil and follow the rules for replacing it. Otherwise, tar deposits form over time, which leads to “stuck” valves.

The gas distribution mechanism drive uses a durable metal chain (from 5,500 rubles) that can withstand 200 thousand km. The VVT-i phase change mechanism itself is reliable. After 100 thousand km, oil may leak from under the valve cover gasket, front crankshaft oil seal or pan gasket.

On early copies, the water pump was “incontinent” (3,500 rubles) - it was replaced every 60–90 thousand km. On restyled cars it has become more durable.

The 1.8-liter Civic unit has one design feature: the catalyst, combined with the exhaust manifold, is integrated into the cylinder head. And this increased the thermal load of the motor. Therefore, failure of the radiator or thermostat can lead to warping of the cylinder head. Repair - from 25,000 rubles.

A faulty fan switch sensor, which is located in the lower radiator tank, can also cause antifreeze to boil. The radiator itself also fails (RUB 13,500). On cars with a mileage of 150 thousand km, the crankshaft and camshaft oil seals leak. Repair - from 4500 rub. And if the starter stops turning (7,000 rubles.

), first check the functionality of the solenoid relay.

Possible costs for chassis repairs

The Corolla's suspension is simple in design, but cannot boast of the strength of its predecessor models. The first ones, at 20-40 thousand km, will be the struts and bushings of the front stabilizer (RUB 4,800 per circle). After 50 thousand

km, a creaking sound when turning the steering wheel will reveal worn-out support bearings of the struts (2,200 rubles each). Shock absorbers (4,500 rubles each) usually take care of “hundreds”. And ball joints have a service life twice as long. The rear suspension will remind itself only at 100 thousand.

km, when you have to change the shock absorbers (3,800 rubles each). Silent blocks can last up to 200 thousand km.

The Civic sedan has fully independent suspension. The support bearings of the front struts (2000 rubles each), which were replaced under warranty at 20–40 thousand km, can be called weak. Shock absorbers lasted about the same amount of time (4,300 rubles each).

True, after restyling these parts became more durable. Ball joints are considered almost eternal, and stabilizer struts and bushings (RUB 3,500) last up to 100 thousand km. The springs in the rear suspension turned out to be weak (4,500 rubles each).

), due to which the car sagged with a full load. And the shock absorbers were already “punched” at 50 thousand km.

In the steering, the rack makes knocking noises at 50–70 thousand km. Officials ordered it to be replaced under warranty. And today, specialized services limit themselves to replacing a worn plastic bushing on its shaft.

Possible transmission repair costs

The C50A robotic gearbox (manual gearbox in the photo) was distinguished by jerky and not always logical switching. On early copies, the electronics did not respond to the natural wear of the clutch elements and, as a result, incorrectly commanded the closure of the discs. Therefore, the clutch (8800 rub.

) by 50 thousand km it was already worn out. The servo drive (RUB 19,600) does not tolerate heat and cold well - the box switched to “neutral” from any gear and refused to shift. The Japanese modernized the “robot” for several years, but in 2010... they returned the old 4-speed “automatic” for our market.

Read also:  Engines for Toyota Corolla: history and modernity

A similar situation happened on a Civic with a robotic transmission. And after restyling in 2008, it was replaced with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The box is very reliable. Over the entire period of operation of the model with such a gearbox, mechanics do not recall cases of any regular breakdowns. True, the officials prescribe an oil change after 40 thousand km. The operation costs 7,500 rubles.

Verdict

Sergey Fedorov, editor:

— Both cars are very close in terms of reliability and maintenance costs. But they target different customer groups. And when buying a Corolla, it is more advisable to give preference to more recent copies younger than 2010.

Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla - what to choose?

Home ... Toyota Corolla competitors - comparison with Jetta, Octavia, etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lU-qV4QfHU

Speaking about Japanese cars, it is very difficult to say which one is better and why, and also why, for example, Toyota is preferable to Honda.

However, for those who have come close to choosing a car, but have not yet decided for themselves what they prefer, it may be difficult to understand who is which of the legendary Japanese “samurai” highways is better and in what way.

This review is dedicated to two cars that regularly rank among the most popular in the world, and have earned the full respect of motorists. So, what should you choose: Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, and is it worth choosing between them?

The latest generations of Civic and Corolla marked a complete break from their native “C-class” and indicated a movement towards the more prestigious D-class. They are difficult to classify as family sedans, but a family of four will feel comfortable in any of them. However, what specific differences are hidden under the hood and in the interior of these legends, and what should the choice be based on.

Whose engine is better?

It is worth mentioning that for some reason Honda decided to limit the potential circle of Russian buyers of the Civic, reducing the number of engines offered to a single 1.8-liter.

The 1.8 SOHC i-VTEC powerplant produces 141 hp. With. at 6500 rpm. and 174 n.m. at 4300 rpm, which can be called a rather modest figure. The buyer is given the opportunity to choose between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed automatic transmission.

The maximum speed for its class is quite impressive - 200 km/h, acceleration to hundreds is 9.1 seconds with a manual transmission. And fuel consumption for manual transmission/automatic transmission in the combined cycle is 6.6/6.7; in the city 9.6/8.8.

Honda will not be able to surprise the buyer with cutting-edge technologies, but instead of this the company offers a proven and ultra-reliable engine, which is considered by many to be the most reliable in the world.

But Toyota has offered a much more interesting choice of engines that meets the requirements of a very wide range of buyers who have the opportunity to choose a car in accordance with their wallet or driving style.

Corolla engines are available in seven options.

  • 1.33 liters – petrol engine with a power of 99 hp. with a 6-speed manual transmission. Combined cycle consumption per 100 km – 5.6 liters. Acceleration to hundreds – 12.6 s.
  • 1.4 liter – 90-horsepower diesel engine with manual transmission. 4.1 l. 12.5 s.
  • 1.6 liters – engine power 122 and 132 hp. PPP 6-speed manual or CVT. From 5.6 to 6.6 l. from 10 to 11.1 s.
  • 1.8 liters – power 140 hp. Available only with a CVT. 6.4 l. 10.2 s.

Toyota's engine range is a combination of advanced technologies and time-tested solutions. A fairly flexible choice between units allows you to choose a car for yourself. However, even in the top versions of the Corolla, the dynamics are lacking compared to the Civic.

And so, if you evaluate the choice of power plants, deciding which is better than the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, the advantage is on the side of Toyota. However, the Honda Civic offers a slightly more dynamic and sporty engine, which many will also appreciate.

Salon and capacity

The Honda Civic is 4.5 cm shorter than the Corolla. 4570 versus 4620 mm. However, this has absolutely no effect on the length of the cabin. But the height of the sportier Civic is lower by 3 cm. Taking into account the higher ground clearance of 165 mm (for Honda it is 150 mm for Toyota), the cabin height decreases by 4-5 cm, which is noticeable when a tall person sits in the rear seats.

In general, the interior of the car feels that the Civic was created more for the driver than for the passengers, while in the Corolla comfort is divided equally between all passengers. Therefore, Toyota is often preferred as a family car.

The trunk volume of Toyota is also more spacious than that of the Civic, 452 and 440 liters. However, the extra 12 liters can actually only be useful in extreme cases. Overall, both cars sacrifice trunk space for interior space.

Both cars offer good interior space with comfortable seating for four adults. Good ergonomics make it easy to use all the amenities of a car (window lifters, air conditioning or climate control, multimedia system). However, each car has its own nuances.

  • Advantages of the Civic: high ground clearance, sporty design, high comfort for the driver and front passenger.
  • Advantages of the Corolla: Roomy interior, spacious trunk, more convenience for rear passengers.

Keeping in mind the saying that there is no dispute about taste, it is worth recognizing the equality of both cars. However, the Korola shows more features of a family car, and the Civic will certainly be of interest to individualists.

Chassis and handling

The chassis is the Civic's strongest point. This is thanks to the multi-link independent suspension on the rear wheels, which makes the car's handling smoother. This type of suspension allows for amazingly precise control of the vehicle's movement, as it minimizes lateral vibrations when driving.

Multi-link suspension combined with high ground clearance makes these cars safer on Russian roads.

The Corolla offers drivers a semi-independent suspension, which is good for a quiet, composed ride. The front two sedans have a classic independent MacPherson strut.

The Honda's braking system also looks a little more efficient. Toyota only has ventilated front brakes, the Civic has rear brakes too, so the Honda Civic emphasizes its sporty, aggressive character.

Thus, the chassis of the Zwick is confidently superior to the Corolla.

Bottom line

When choosing based on three main parameters who is better, the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, it was not possible to identify the undisputed leader.

In Toyota's defense, we can say that this company is a Japanese leader in innovation and new technologies, and this is fully represented in the Corolla.

Honda, meanwhile, is considered the most reliable car in the world and always offers the optimal combination of sport, comfort, and design and technology. The Civic buyer values individuality and strives to stand out from the crowd. Corolla fans value quality and safety above all else.

Toyota Corolla vs Honda Civic

Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic models are among the most common representatives of this class from Japanese auto giants.

They have earned a reputation for being reliable, economical and well-equipped.

The main difference from competitors can be considered a number of unique characteristics, an expanded package of standard installed options and an affordable price compared to European and American cars.

Toyota Corolla is a 5-seater front-wheel drive mid-size C-Class car. The model is available in a single body style and is a 4-door sedan. The 11th generation of the model, which was presented in June 2013, is offered in car dealerships.

The Honda Civic is a 5-seater front-wheel drive class C car. The model is available in 3 body styles: 4-door sedan, 3- or 5-door hatchback, and station wagon. The European version of the 9th generation of the sedan after restyling was presented in May 2013.

A further comparative test of Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic took place on sedan cars. The review models are presented in configurations close to the maximum. Both Civic and Corolla are equipped with 1.

8-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engines and automatic gearboxes.

Toyota Corolla received a 7-speed CVT, Honda Civic is equipped with a torque converter 5-speed transmission.

Exterior

Toyota Corolla _

The updates to the exterior design of the Corolla model are quite significant. The designers redesigned the radiator grille and narrowed the head optics. The headlights have large LED DRLs at the top, which visually make the front more representative.

The side part turned out to be strict, without unnecessary roundness. The sloping roof and moderately prominent wheel arches create the image of a calm and business car.

The stern received large horizontal brake lights with large white inserts and sharp corners, which fit well into the overall ascetic design of the rear.

Honda Civic

The car in front remained the same recognizable Civic, which received slightly modified but familiar headlights. The wide hood and the characteristic slope of the A-pillars remain unchanged features of this model.

Powerful stamping at the bottom of the doors highlights and “slims” the side of the car. The biggest changes have occurred with the stern and rear optics. The trunk lid has a “boom” resembling a decorative spoiler on the top edge.

The lower edge has a chrome insert, which visually complements the strict rear optics with transparent inserts.

Typical representatives of the “C” class turned out to be unexpectedly large and solid thanks to the combination of a number of successful design solutions. It is worth noting that the Honda Civic looks more stretched visually. Against this background, the Toyota Corolla looks like a more compact car, but the proportions are still not ideal.

If we talk about the target audience, then the new Civic has clearly lost its individuality in the flow; it should be positioned as a global model aimed at young and active drivers. The Corolla is a “business class in miniature”, partially copying recognizable design solutions of its older and more expensive brothers in the assembly line.

This approach allowed the car to remain original and presentable, which made this model the winner at this stage of comparison.

Interior

Toyota Corolla _

The finishing materials in the Toyota Crolla are of average quality, which is not surprising for this class. The layout of hard plastic with soft panels is noticeable. The fit of the components is done at a high level, as all seams and gaps are carefully made. The complex shapes in the design of the dashboard are in good harmony with classic solutions in the design of the center console and instrument panel.

The main detail of the interior can be considered the large screen of the multimedia system on a panel made of black lacquered plastic. The climate control unit with large round controls and a narrow display is no less ergonomically designed. As for the seats, the profile is comfortable, the filling is moderately hard, and there is lateral support. The multifunctional steering wheel has a rim of a good diameter.

Honda Civic

All the “branded” interior details of the Civic are in place. The familiar two-level panel, a large speedometer in the very center and a noticeable center console turn towards the driver are made in a futuristic design.

The finishing materials are of good quality, but the interior is dominated by hard plastic. The seat filling is not hard, the profile and range of settings allow for a low seating position. Medium lateral support.

The multimedia system is simple, has a large screen and medium-sized round controls in the upper corners. The display is easy to read from the driver's seat only. The climate control unit has ergonomic round controls and a small information display. The multifunction steering wheel is “light”, with a relatively small rim diameter.

In the interior of the sedans, there are noticeable attempts by Japanese designers to move away from those established standards that we can observe in the automotive industry over the past few years. This turned out more successfully for the Honda Civic, since the overall interior design turned out to be cozy, modern and technologically advanced.

If we talk about the Toyota Corolla, the interior of this model is not bad at all compared to other cars, but it definitely loses to its opponent due to its excessive simplicity. If you compare the quality of materials and assembly, then the machines are on the same level.

The result of our interior comparison was a landslide victory for the Honda Civic.

Ride quality

Comparison of dynamic indicators Toyota Corolla Honda Civic
Acceleration up to 100 km/h. 10.2 sec. 10.8 sec.
Max. speed 195 km/h 200 km/h
Power, hp 140 142

Toyota Corolla

To objectively compare driving characteristics, a comparative test drive of Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic was carried out. The Toyota engine was launched first.

It is worth noting the acceptable power reserve in the low and medium speed range, as well as the smooth operation of the gearbox.

The list of minuses includes some hesitation that occurs under the gas pedal when sudden acceleration is necessary. The noise insulation of the wheel arches also did not cause delight.

The suspension in a car is a successful combination. An independent MacPherson strut with anti-roll bars is installed at the front; at the rear, engineers equipped the Corolla with a semi-independent torsion beam.

Handling is predictable, steering response is a little blurred, there is slight roll on turns. No significant drifts along the axes were observed. The smooth ride is traditionally high for Toyota, even taking into account the beam.

The machine gently passes not only asphalt joints, but also deeper defects.

Honda Civic

We continue to look for the answer to the question, which is better, Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic? In the Civic, acceleration occurs briskly and confidently, but in the middle rev range the pressure subsides.

In normal mode, the gearbox does not particularly raise the needle on the tachometer. Engine noise insulation is acceptable, but the arches can be heard clearly on the highway.

The gas pedal becomes responsive in kick-down mode, but for intensive overtaking this is only enough within the permitted speed limits.

The Honda Civic's suspension copes well with small irregularities, but its short travel, front bumper overhangs and ground clearance do not allow it to easily move over more serious obstacles. In some places it seems that the chassis is a little noisy. But the handling is simply excellent. The car obeys the steering wheel perfectly, moves in an arc without unnecessary rolls, only slightly hinting at a possible drift of the stern.

A test drive of two models allowed us to determine which car is better: Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.

The dynamic performance of these cars is almost equal, so they were relegated to the background, but the suspension in this case turned out to be much more important.

The Honda Civic can surprise with its excellent handling and sharp steering, but there are complaints about the smoothness of the ride. Toyota Corolla steers more impressively, but rides softer and quieter, which allowed this car to become a legitimate winner at this stage

Interior and trunk space

Luggage compartment volume (litres) Toyota Corolla Honda Civic
Trunk volume 452 440

Toyota Corolla

The front row of seats provides a decent amount of headroom and shoulder room for this class. Rear row passengers will be able to feel the lack of space in width for the three of them, but there are millimeters of headroom. Rear passenger legroom is minimal.

The trunk is implemented as standard. The sedan has a good loading opening; the hinges on the lid naturally take up a little space. This compartment is sufficient to carry out everyday tasks of transporting boxes and bags.

Honda Civic

The front of the car was unexpectedly spacious. Even tall riders should have no problems with headroom. The width of the picture turned out to be similar. The back row is no longer so spacious for three passengers, but it is quite possible to accommodate. Not much room for knees.

The luggage compartment has a relatively high opening, but in some cases the width may not be enough. The hinges on the trunk lid additionally “eat up” the height when closing, so you can only count on transporting typical household cargo.

Economical

Fuel consumption per 100 km. Toyota Corolla Honda Civic
In the city 8.3 l 8.8 l.
Along the highway 5.3 l 5.6 l.
In a mixed cycle 6.4 l. 6.7 l.

Safety

Each of the review models received an impressive list of active and passive safety systems.

For an objective answer to the question of which is better, Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, it is worth turning to the results of crash tests. According to the Euro NCAP system, Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic earned the maximum 5 stars.

If you compare cars with similar levels of equipment, then their scores at this stage of comparison are equalized.

Cost of models

  • Price of a Toyota Corolla in the maximum configuration without mileage: about 23,800 US dollars.
  • Price of Honda Civic 4D in the maximum configuration without mileage: about 26,000 US dollars.

Comparison results

Toyota Corolla

Advantages:

  • Presentable exterior;
  • Smooth, soft and quiet operation of the chassis;
  • Fuel consumption indicators;
  • Competitive price in this class;

Flaws:

  • Dynamic characteristics;
  • Mediocre sound insulation of wheel arches;
  • Low-informative steering;
  • Controversial design decisions in interior design;

Honda Civic

Advantages:

  • Acceleration dynamics and gearbox operation;
  • Excellent road stability;
  • Steering settings;
  • Original and modern interior design;

Flaws:

  • Insufficient ground clearance for driving on CIS roads;
  • Luggage compartment capacity;
  • Noise insulation of wheel arches;
  • High cost of the “C”-class model;

Now let's figure out what is more expensive to maintain, Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic? This requires an analysis of the price lists provided by official sources of Toyota and Honda to familiarize yourself with the cost of servicing warranty vehicles at official dealerships. The result is the conclusion that routine maintenance of a Honda Civic will cost the owner slightly more than a Toyota Corolla.

All that remains is to determine the winner. This turned out to be a Toyota Corolla. The main advantage compared to the Honda Civic is the car’s better adaptability to driving on bad roads, as well as a noticeably more comfortable suspension and smoother ride. As a result, the Corolla model demonstrated an optimal set of consumer qualities at a reasonable price.

Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic - are they really that good?

Honda Civic VII and Toyota Corolla IX with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine are considered the most reliable cars on the secondary market. The only question is: isn’t this the merit of exclusively previous generations, who really have proven themselves only on the positive side?

Read also:  “Check engine” error on Toyota Corolla – what to do?

In the case of the Corolla with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine producing 110 hp. no problems arise. This car is indeed very reliable. If you follow the rules of regular maintenance, the most common malfunction will be burnt out outdoor lighting bulbs.

In terms of size, build quality and interior, both cars are comparable. In the Honda, it is more convenient to operate the gear lever, and the gear selection mechanism is more accurate.

The Corolla doesn't take care of this properly, and the steering and suspension are much less impressive. Even though the engines develop the same power (110 hp).

), and the dynamic characteristics are close (acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 10 seconds), you get more driving pleasure behind the wheel of a Civic.

As mentioned above, there is no need to worry about Toyota's reliability, while Honda has two costly defects. The steering system and bearings in the gearbox turned out to be unreliable.

There are no significant problems with the Toyota Corolla, and it is also cheaper to maintain.

The Civic requires more attention: every 40,000 km, it is necessary to adjust the valve clearance and every 90,000 km, change the timing belt (for the Corolla - a chain) and the oil in the gearbox. However, operating costs do not differ much from each other.

Original spare parts for both cars are quite expensive, but there are practically no problems with the availability of cheaper substitutes. One of the advantages of the Corolla is a large selection on the secondary market.

Honda Civic 1.6 – typical problems

Gearbox failure

The destruction of bearings in a gearbox is a serious defect that sometimes occurs. The cost of repairs in an official service is at least 15-17 thousand rubles, in ordinary workshops it is much cheaper. Symptoms: very noisy operation of the box and problems with engaging some gears. Failure of the box is caused by too much load on the engine at low speeds.

Steering wheel lock

Power steering failure is the worst thing that can happen to a Civic VII. The reason may be the lack of periodic adjustment of the gap in the gearbox or the failure of the electronic controller. In the worst case, when the electronics cannot be restored, you will have to spend money on a new steering column costing more than 50,000 rubles.

Leaks from shock absorbers

In the suspension, shock absorbers often begin to leak prematurely and the stabilizer bushings wear out relatively quickly - knocking noises appear.

Disconnecting the electrical harness

Not often, but there are cases of disconnection of the contacts of the air temperature control knob. The repair consists of reconnecting the contacts, for which the service will ask for several hundred rubles.

Thus, if not for the Civic's costly malfunctions, it would definitely win in this comparison. The Honda is more practical and better on the road. However, you can take a chance, since nothing serious happens to most specimens.

Toyota Corolla IX 1.6 – typical faults

Play in the steering

Many cars have already covered more than 200,000 km; in their case, they have to take into account the wear of the steering rods. Sometimes there is play in the rack. Fortunately, the steering mechanism is equipped with a hydraulic booster, which does not cause problems.

Wear of stabilizer bushings

The suspension has a very simple design and is highly durable. Only with high mileage does it become necessary to replace bushings and stabilizer struts. The cost of a new set does not exceed several thousand rubles.

Rapid brake wear

The brake system components are not very durable. Brake pads, as a rule, require replacement after 30 thousand km, and brake discs after 45 thousand km. Original spare parts for the brake system are very expensive. Fortunately, substitutes are quite affordable.

Generator failure

Sometimes, due to bearing wear, the generator begins to make noise. The cost of replacing bearings is approximately 4,000 rubles.

Increased oil consumption

At high mileage, the 1.6-liter engine begins to consume a lot of engine oil. Therefore, in older cars, regular checking of its level is required.

Thus, the Toyota Corolla IX is quite an expensive car compared to its competitors, but among long-standing small cars it is difficult to find a more reliable design. The 1.6-liter engine provides good dynamics, but the comfortable chassis lends itself more to a relaxed driving style. The main disadvantage is the relatively small trunk.

Conclusion

So what should we recommend – a Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla? It all depends on preference. The Corolla inspires more confidence because you can really count on it for long, trouble-free use.

But the Civic is a more interesting car, although careless use can lead to costly power steering failure. The probability is small, but it is there.

Therefore, if someone does not want to take risks, then it is better to opt for the Toyota Corolla.

Honda Civic

The ninth generation of the Honda Civic, which has already undergone an update, versus the eleventh generation of the Toyota Corolla (European version), which has changed dramatically compared to its predecessor - which is better to choose?

Two “golf” sedans, two representatives of the Land of the Rising Sun – two such identical, but at the same time so different cars. We can talk long and tediously about the appearance of the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

This is not necessary, because everyone has their own tastes and preferences. The same can be said about interior design.

After all, there are much more important parameters that can tip the scales in favor of one car or another.

For example, the Toyota Corolla http://auto.ironhorse.ru/category/japan/toyota/corolla is slightly larger than its Japanese “brother”. This makes it more spacious than the Honda Civic sedan for both front and rear passengers.

The front seats of the Toyota Corolla are narrower, their lateral support is less developed than that of the Honda Civic, but it is comfortable to sit in both cars. The second row of seats is more comfortable in the Corolla - there is more legroom, the roof puts much less pressure on the heads than in the Civic.

The finishing materials in the Toyota Corolla sedan are of very high quality, they even resemble cars of a higher class. The Honda Civic is inferior to its opponent in this parameter - the plastic is tougher, but leather trim is still possible.

In terms of build quality, the Corolla, like all representatives of the Toyota model range http://auto.ironhorse.ru/category/japan/toyota, is also ahead of the Honda Civic.

The Corolla has 452 liters of luggage space, while the Civic has 440 liters. In terms of displacement, the Japanese cargo compartments are not very different, but the Toyota Corolla has another important advantage - a full-size spare wheel on an alloy wheel versus only a spare wheel on the Honda.

In terms of handling, these sedans are close to each other. The Honda Civic has a sharper steering wheel and the right amount of effort on the steering wheel, but at the same time it does not have enough feedback, and any little thing under the wheels gives off vibrations. The steering wheel of the Toyota Corolla sedan is less sharp, but it is pleasantly heavy in turns. The car feels good, there are no vibrations.

On Russian roads, the Toyota Corolla is much more comfortable than the Honda Civic. The energy intensity of the suspension, sound insulation, smoothness - everything is in favor of the Corolla. The Civic's suspension is a bit stiff.

In Russia, the ninth generation Honda Civic is offered with one 1.8-liter gasoline engine that produces 141 horsepower. The engine can be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic transmission.

In this regard, the Toyota Corolla beats the Civic by one “gate” - it has three petrol units to choose from: a 1.3-liter with a capacity of 99 horsepower, a 1.6-liter with 122 horsepower and a 1.8-liter with an output of 140 horsepower .

The first engine is combined only with a manual transmission with 6 gears, the second - with the same “mechanics” or a continuously variable variator, the third - exclusively with a variator. In terms of dynamics, the Honda Civic with automatic transmission is inferior to the Corolla with a 140-horsepower engine and CVT - 10.8 versus 10.

2 seconds. However, a Civic with a manual transmission takes only 9.1 seconds to accelerate from zero to first hundred.

The average fuel consumption of both cars with similar engines is almost the same.

On the Russian market, the ninth generation Honda Civic sedan is available in three trim levels at prices ranging from 779 thousand to 939 thousand rubles. The “eleventh” Toyota Corolla is offered in seven versions and is priced from 659 thousand to 1,026 thousand rubles.

The basic equipment of the Toyota Corolla is 120 thousand rubles cheaper than that of the Honda Civic, but the Civic benefits due to a more powerful engine and better equipment. But the Corolla from 1.

An 8-liter engine with 140 horsepower will cost at least 933 thousand rubles.
