What to choose: Octavia or Corolla? — DRIVE2
A friend of mine is planning to sell his Logan and is thinking about what to get in return. The budget is decent enough to seriously rack your brains, namely 600tr. In this budget, almost the entire class C segment can be considered, with the exception of premium.
In general, he wants a car from 2012, in good configuration, with manual transmission. I never undertake to advise something, because what I may like may not be liked by another person at all. But if you are guided primarily by reason, then the circle of cars you choose can be somewhat narrowed.
But a potential purchase must have its soul, and it fell on his Octavia and Corolla.
1
So, what to choose from these two really good cars? Well, firstly, the Octavia is considered exclusively with the 1.6 MPI engine, that is, without a turbo. Initially, he wanted a car with a TSI engine and preferably a 1.8, because he would drive a Logan with a 1.8 engine.
4 made him despondent, and then a mutual friend of ours, who has owned an Octavia with exactly this engine for the 4th year, assures that everything is ok with the engine, and in general - “No turbo, no party!”)) But after reading a bunch forums, I finally decided to abandon Party, because you can spend a lot of money on this very Party.
Secondly, it is customary to take only a manual transmission, again for economic reasons, and in general, a person, as he himself says, is not a fan of automatic transmissions and various variations on this theme. In general, you need 3 pedals under your feet!
In general, I personally consider both of these options very worthy. Both Corolla and Octavia have long established themselves in our market and sell quite well in the secondary market. Skoda with option 1.
A 6 MPI manual transmission is a fairly reliable car, but you don’t even have to say anything about Toyota, everything is clear here. Although the Corolla is a very overrated car in our market, I think.
Yes, it is reliable, but it is somehow too simple and I personally don’t like it.
The Corolla also has a 1.6 engine under the hood, a little more powerful than the Skoda, and more economical, and also has a 6-speed gearbox. And Toyota's timing belt is on a chain, and Skoda's is on a belt. In general, in terms of the engine + gearbox combination, the preferences lie on the side of the Japanese.
2
3
As for the suspension, things are like this. Toyota has a beam at the back, Skoda has levers. In terms of handling, it seems like the Octavia should be more interesting, but my personal opinion is that it has too much roll in turns, and given that the 1.6 engine is clearly not for fans of sporty driving, there’s no point in bothering with handling at all.
I haven’t driven the Corolla much, I can’t say anything, but there’s a beam there, in principle, everything is clear.
As far as the front suspension is concerned, all cars in this class are approximately the same. And in principle, after Logan, driving any of these cars will be much more comfortable. The main thing is that the suspension is in good working order, but that’s a completely different question.
Salon. In my subjective opinion, Octavia’s is nicer. My friend likes it much better too. The quality of materials in Skoda will be better, although the interior is boring in both places in my opinion, but the Octavia has a significant and undeniable advantage - it’s the trunk!
4
5
He's just huge! Although in this regard, I don’t think it’s entirely fair to compare the sedan and the liftback. Personally, I don't like sedans at all, but my friend doesn't like hatchbacks, so to each his own. But the Octavia certainly has a very interesting body type - sort of like a sedan, but at the same time all the delights of a hatchback.
6
7
There are many more criteria by which these machines can be compared. For example, the cost of spare parts and maintenance, comfort, sound insulation, etc... Personally, I would not undertake to say unequivocally which of these cars is better. And all these test drives are a very subjective thing.
So what should my friend choose? Octavia or Corolla, or maybe even consider another option? Moreover, in a budget of 600tr 2012 there are a lot of other options. Write in the comments, don’t be shy)) And even better, back it up with some arguments, help the person decide!))

Comparison of Toyota Corolla or Skoda Octavia
The modern direction of development and creation of certain new automotive products is most focused on meeting the needs of today’s rather demanding customers as best as possible.
Even restyling these days has become not just an improvement in the appearance of the most beloved brands among the people, which can rightfully be called the Japanese brand Toyota Corolla or the Czech model Skoda Octavia.
As of today, new items for the 2017–2018 season can already be purchased across the entire network of dealership centers. So, what's the difference between your favorite cars? This is far from the only question that potential buyers have.
Study what is better, find what is more reliable, what indicators to focus on and what to choose in terms of price. Nowadays, thanks to the variety of information communications, every car enthusiast receives the most necessary information:
- He can get acquainted with the main indicators of a particular car;
- It is possible to choose different types of sedan, crossover, lift back, catch back or other body configurations;
- Familiarize yourself with the configuration features and characteristics of the power plant.
- It is extremely important to know the cost of various models as the main criterion and a significant factor in selection.
- First of all, the main attention is paid to the appearance and design features of the interior.
External data
A new car from distant Japan - the Toyota Corolla sedan series for the 2017-2018 season has become a worthy successor to the legendary line. In the modern version, the reliability of the body has increased; it combines an equilibrium price, innovative functions and excellent build quality.
Considering the European Toyota line, one can note a new solution for radiator grilles, an increase in chrome parts, the use of a halogen lighting system is radically new, reviews from owners confirm the quality of the front and rear light, which, in addition to lighting, changes the brightness level, blinks in different lines, which depends on the mode. The side contours and rear geometry have been slightly changed. The basic equipment is equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels and electrically adjustable folding mirrors. The color scheme consists of two classic shades, 4 metallic shades, 2 pearlescent. The roof is solid, with a hatch and of the “panorama” type.
Along with this, the comparison with the branded car Skoda Octavia is more advantageous; the appearance has received drastic changes:
- The optics have been changed, it has become a dual type, the lighting system from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is used;
- The dimensions and design of the radiator grille have increased, it is decorated with a thick layer of chrome, thanks to it the car has become powerful, aggressive, and demanding;
- The dimensions of the body have increased slightly, the ground clearance has changed - 15 cm, which made it possible to obtain better aerodynamic qualities compared to its predecessors.
Due to the revised contours and slightly modified body geometry, gasoline is consumed significantly less, the car has become economical and ergonometric, as shown by a test drive carried out on European roads. The basic package is offered to the buyer in a range of ten exquisite noble colors from white and blue to steel and black. The roof structure is solid, sunroof and panorama.
Interior decoration
Inside the new Toyota Corolla for the 2017 season, almost everything remains in the same context - restrained nobility and aesthetics, which is what fans of the brand appreciate. The car's interior is upholstered in high-tech fabric in black and beige colors, which has successfully passed all tests in the field of sanitation and hygiene, cleaning and washing of covers.
Operation has become significantly easier and safer due to the use of a more convenient arrangement of options and functionality on the front panel.
In the center there is an ultra-modern multimedia tablet - a system with a 7-inch touchscreen monitor, next to which a timer, a set of sensors and a menu for activating a set of airbags are conveniently located. Everything is located ideally for the driver, within his field of vision and reach.
Passengers will be very comfortable traveling thanks to a powerful modern air conditioner and climate control system, as well as individually heated seats.
The designers of the Skoda concern chose the same path; if we compare it with its predecessors, everything remains in the same restrained color scheme.
These are three color options - charcoal black, black-brown and brown with beige.
The main innovations affected the control panel, which houses a 9.2-inch multimedia display with touch buttons, which runs on a synchronized iOS or Android base.
Maintenance, repairs, and adjustments to the seats of passengers and the driver are absolutely simple and comfortable. This was made possible by a set of keys equipped with an individual memory option, that is, when turning the ignition switch, all functions are configured automatically.
Cargo space and prices
The trunk volume of the Toyota Corolla in the new version has increased and became 452.0 liters. , the designers placed a spare tire underneath it. The trunk becomes even larger due to the folding rear seat in a 40*60 configuration, and the fuel tank holds 55.0 liters. On the domestic market, Corolla will be presented in six trim levels:
- The “Standard” package costs 949 thousand rubles;
- “Classic” option over 1059 thousand rubles;
- “Style” set from 1109 thousand rubles;
- For “Comfort” you will have to pay 1154 thousand rubles;
- “Style Plus” from 1208 thousand rubles;
- Maximum set “Prestige” from 1295 thousand rubles.
Czech cars have always been developed on the basis of three principles - pragmatism, ergonomics and sophisticated classic simplicity. All this is perfectly embodied in the new Skoda Octavia model. In addition to the spacious interior, fans of the brand will be pleased with the luggage compartment with a volume of 590 liters.
, taking into account the folded rear backrests, it can accommodate a load equivalent to 1,580 liters. , experts note the high functionality and technical characteristics of the car trunk.
The buyer will be pleased with the wide opening with a length of 112.3 cm and a small height of 69.90 cm, which allows loading luggage simply, quickly and comfortably.
Car dealerships offer customers several front-wheel drive Octavia options:
- “Active” at a price of more than 940 thousand rubles;
- “Ambition” from 1076 thousand rubles;
- The maximum “Style” set will cost over 1169 thousand rubles.
- The 4 x 4 all-wheel drive version will hit the market in the form of the “Ambition” modification from 1,561 thousand rubles, and the luxurious “Style” starts from 1,668 thousand rubles.
Power units
In terms of engines, the Corolla model is not too different from its predecessors; they all run on gasoline, but unlike earlier proposals, fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are reduced.
- Engine capacity 1.30 l Power 99 l. c. 6-speed manual transmission
- Volume 1, 60 l 122 l. c. 6-speed manual transmission or CVT
- Volume 1, 80 l 140 l. s.variator
The Skoda Octavia engines did not come as any surprise to fans of the brand. The only thing that has been revised is the consumption of significantly more expensive fuel and environmental pollution according to European standards.
Conclusion
Considering all the pros and cons of the Japanese sedan, which was supposed to join the premium class. The new Corolla has, of course, been improved.
The car will delight you with a set of modern equipment, numerous options, dynamics have increased, it has become solid in appearance, the finishing has become more impressive due to high-quality materials.
The price is quite high for domestic consumers, and even the most maximum configuration does not meet the requirements of a premium cash register.
The Skoda concern team approached the concept of this model of the Octavia series more carefully. But even here there are numerous advantages and, sadly for a prospective buyer, disadvantages. A precisely tuned suspension allows you to conclude about the comfort and safety of the car.
The new product is more attractive in appearance, features minor changes in the interior, and has improved some of the shortcomings inherent in the previous series. Attracted by the variety of power units and price levels.
The borrowing of the concept of front optics, the shape and design of the radiator grille, and some interior elements from the classics of the genre - the Mercedes-Benz E Class - had a somewhat negative impact.

Skoda Octavia or Toyota Corolla: which is better - comparison (+ photos and videos)
The history of the models that are the subject of today's review began more than 50 years ago. Skoda Octavia or Toyota Corolla – which is better? Today we will find out the result of many years of work by both companies and try to determine the favorite in the race for the hearts of customers.
A little history
The first models of both manufacturers actually appeared quite a long time ago: Toyota Corolla first rolled off the production line in 1966, and Skoda Octavia in 1959. But unlike the Czech company, which did not produce this sedan for almost 25 years until 1996, the Japanese released their model continuously.
Both cars gained popularity in Russia at approximately the same time - in the late 90s and early 2000s. In 1996, the familiar Octavia was released, whose design can be traced in the model right up to the present day.
By the way, this and the next generation of cars were also called Octavia Tour.
This car was no different from the standard Skoda, but in order to maintain a recognizable name, the manufacturer added the “Tour” prefix until 2010.
The next generations hit the roads in 2004 and 2013. In 2008, the Skoda Octavia A5 received a restyling and acquired an updated appearance, which distinguished it primarily due to new headlights. With the release of the Skoda Octavia A5, the range of engines that can be found on modern models was completely changed. The latest generation of cars is called Octavia A7.
As for the Corolla, the 9th generation appeared in 2000 in the E120 and E130 body styles. The cars were highly reliable, and many models of that generation can still be found today.
In 2007, a new E140 body was released, and a little later a restyling (E150), which maintained the mark established by the previous modification. Since 2013, Toyota has released its latest generation, the E160.
And in 2015-2016, its body was restyled.
Appearance
Both models have clearly recognizable features from previous generations. In the new Skoda Octavia, only the headlights have undergone noticeable changes.
The front optics are now separated by vertical inserts in the front part of the body. Due to this, the lanterns seem to be divided into 2 parts. The radiator grille and front bumper have undergone minor changes.
Otherwise, the car remained similar to the previous model - Skoda Octavia 2016.
Toyota Corolla 2017 is also a restyling, so you shouldn’t expect a global redesign of the body. The “Toyota” handwriting has been preserved. The changes are noticeable only in the details. However, the designers managed to give the car a new character.
The lines have become even sharper than on the 2015 Corolla. The 2016 design (that’s when the last Corolla body was released) has a feature characteristic of modern style - the lines of the radiator grille are continued in the bends of the lamps.
The shape of the front bumper has changed, especially in the area of the fog lights.
To make the car more in line with the class of prestigious sedans, the designers added a lot of chrome elements. Neither the Corolla E150 nor the pre-restyling model of the latest generation could boast of so much chrome.
In addition, Toyota Corolla engineers narrowed the inserts on the trunk and grille to create the feeling of a larger body. But, despite this, the competitor is ahead of the “Japanese” in size. The Octavia is 9mm taller, 50mm longer and almost 40mm wider.
However, such a confident advantage was not always there. A comparison of the sizes of the previous generation cars - Corolla E150 and Octavia A5 - shows that Toyota was slightly taller and wider. Let's see if the Skoda's dimensions justify themselves when it comes to the trunk and the spaciousness of the second row of seats.
Comparing the design of the two cars, it is difficult to identify a clear leader. Each is attractive in its own way. Toyota looks more aggressive, and Skoda looks more solid. The exterior of both models is harmonious and modern. The rest is a matter of taste!
What is inside?
The first thing a driver evaluates when getting into a car is the seat. In both cars they have moderate lateral support, are characterized by a sufficient degree of rigidity and a comfortable relief.
The ergonomics of the front panel are at a high level in both the Corolla and Octavia. However, there is a fundamental difference in these cars. The Octavia not only looks solid, the engineers put a lot of effort into making sure it looks that way.
In contrast, the competitor prefers to appear rather than be.
Corolla interior
Taking a closer look at the interior, you realize that the quality of materials in Toyota is poor, and some buttons are taken from previous generations. It seems that only the front part was worked on - the center console and instrument panel. We tried to save as much as possible on the rest.
Take, for example, the seat heating buttons, which are hidden under a special retractable “curtain” located at the bottom of the panel. They look very cheap and outdated.
It seems as if they were deliberately hidden from view, preferring to insert a neat curtain rather than integrate modern and elegant buttons. Many may think that we are being picky.
But as soon as you personally sit inside, you will understand that there are many such “cheapenings”. It spoils the impression.
But there are also positive aspects! In the “Style Plus” configuration, the 2016-2017 Corolla is equipped with a 7-inch head-up display, which has become much clearer and faster. He lost the well-known Toyota problems with response reaction. However, it does not have a built-in navigation system.
Among the interior innovations that radically distinguish the Corolla from previous generations, it is worth noting the air deflectors. In form and functionality they are similar to similar parts in Mercedes. Although unusual deflectors are unlikely to tip the scales in favor of the “Japanese”.
Octavia interior
Meanwhile, the Czechs have everything in order with their interior design! The salon looks stylish, modern and expensive! The steering wheel has a huge range of adjustment for reach and height. The multimedia system works quickly and clearly.
The maximum versions of the model have a 9.2-inch display. It connects to Android and IOS of your smartphones and has navigation. One of the shortcomings is the not entirely legible dashboard, where the numbers are arranged in a circle rather than horizontally. However, this is rather a minor flaw.
In terms of the number of options, the new Skoda Octavia A7 clearly wins. It is equipped with blind spot monitoring, lane keeping monitoring and adaptive cruise control. And its head-up display is more modern and functional. The Corolla doesn't have all these options. The maximum that it can provide customers is keyless entry and parking sensors.
Rear row of seats
The second row in both models provides plenty of space. Oddly enough, the 2016-2017 Toyota Corolla is slightly more spacious than its opponent - there is more legroom in the “Japanese”! Although the Octavia 2017 is longer and wider.
Trunk
But when making a comparison, we have not yet reached the main trump card of the Czech-German car - the trunk. The advantage here is irrefutable! Corolla loses in terms of spaciousness, loading height, and luggage compartment design. The liftback body, which was equipped with the first Skoda Octavia Tour in 1996, is the trump card!
Thanks to the fact that the trunk opens along with the rear window, like in a hatchback, loading any items becomes much more convenient. In addition, you can fold the rear seats directly from the trunk - for convenience, there are special buttons on the sides. In Toyota, folding the sofa is only possible from the interior.
The last argument in favor of Skoda is roominess. If we compare the trunk volume, the Octavia is confidently in the lead: 568 liters. versus 458 hp And if you fold the rear row of seats, you get 1558 liters of usable volume.
Under the hood
Like the Toyota Corolla 2015, the new model offers customers already familiar, but slightly modified engine types:
- 1.3 liters with a power of 99 hp;
- 1.6 liters with a power of 122 hp;
- 1.8 liters with a power of 140 hp.
The most popular modification remains the Corolla 1.6 liter. In 2017-2018 it is offered with two types of gearbox: 6-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. 1.3 liter engine. is equipped exclusively with a manual transmission, and the maximum configuration is equipped with a CVT.
The competitor has a similar situation, only with more transmission options. Inside, the Skoda Octavia 2017 is offered with 3 types of engines:
- 1.6 liter MPI engine. and power 110 hp. (available with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 6-level automatic transmission);
- TSI volume 1.4 l. and power 150 hp. (offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed DSG robotic gearbox);
- TSI 1.8 l. 180 hp (also two transmission options: 6 manual transmission and 7 DSG).
Price
To determine what to buy, it is worth looking at the prices of the corresponding modifications. Thus, a Skoda Octavia 1.6 with automatic transmission in the maximum “Style” configuration will cost 1,268 thousand rubles, and a Corolla with the same type of engine and CVT will cost 1,107 thousand rubles.
The price ratio of the basic versions of competitors looks the same: Octavia 1.6 starts from 984 thousand (it is important to remember that the 1.6 engine costs less than 1.4 TSI), and Corolla 1.3 liters. – from 954 thousand rubles.
The difference in the cost of the maximum configuration is almost 80 thousand, again in favor of the Japanese company.
And although many were surprised that Toyota lowered the price tag for its new model, in comparison with its competitor, it is cheap! Octavia does not hide the fact that it is an expensive car, but it has not skimped anywhere on materials and options. Therefore, when you consider the long list of systems that Skoda has but not Toyota, the price difference becomes justified.
What to choose?
Statistics clearly show that the comparison favorite is Skoda.
However, there are many fans of the Japanese brand in the world who “believe” in it and will buy it. If you are familiar with the brand and have a certain affinity for it, you will like it. Perhaps, in order to save money, you even choose a used Toyota Corolla rather than an Octavia. Moreover, given the universal love for the manufacturer, you can always sell this car.
It's important to understand that the Corolla is not hopelessly bad. It’s just that it’s clearly losing compared to its competitors. When deciding what to take, you will have to make an ambiguous choice: prestige and technology or fame and economy.

Which is better: Skoda Octavia or Toyota Corolla? Review and comparison of models, characteristics
The C-class is rightfully considered one of the most popular segments among cars, because for relatively little money the buyer gets a car with excellent characteristics, design, high level of comfort and safety, excellent driving performance, etc.
The most popular representatives of the C-segment are Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla. It is very difficult to say which is better of these two cars, because in many ways they are similar, but at the same time completely different. Let's try to find out which car is better to give preference to.
Appearance
The appearance of a car is very important for many buyers, so let's first figure out what is better - Skoda Octavia or Toyota Corolla in terms of design.
Despite the fact that the Octavia has been produced since 1996, the modern model has a very clearly recognizable shape and silhouette. Of course, there have been many changes in terms of design, but this has not radically changed the appearance of the Octavia.
From the front, the car looks very cool and “aggressive” in a good way. The headlights are divided into two sections and are equipped with modern optics with LED elements.
The radiator grille is painted black and framed in a chrome frame.
The front bumper has a slightly sporty look with a relatively low overhang and distinctive shape. The large air intake with a coarse mesh is divided into two halves - there is nothing in the bottom, and fog lights are located on the top, in the corners.
From behind, the Octavia looks quite normal. Large headlights with LED elements, a trunk lid with a couple of sharp lines emphasizing a certain shape, and a smooth bumper with side lights.
"Corolla"
The Corolla also looks good in appearance and is no worse than its opponent. The front literally looks very “evil” and is more reminiscent of the “look” of some predatory animal. The headlights are long and narrow, with many LED elements and, of course, modern optics. The radiator grille is also small and is decorated with a corporate logo in a chrome frame.
The front bumper is made like a sports car. The wide air intake is divided lengthwise by four “fins” and hides the lower part of the intercooler. On the sides there are characteristic niches in which foglights are comfortably located.
The back side of the car, as in the case of the Octavia, looks less interesting. There’s not much to draw attention to here, except that the headlights are more expressive and the bumper has a more “muscular” shape.
In general, both cars are interesting in appearance and look great. Which of these is better is a matter of everyone’s taste, but, probably, a slight advantage is still on the side of the Octavia, due to its more expressive shape.
Salon
Now that the design is finished, we can compare the Skoda Octavia and the Toyota Corolla inside.
First, let's look at the Corolla. The interior of the car is spacious, it is comfortable to be in it, nothing is restrictive anywhere. The seats are quite comfortable, with lateral support, ventilation and several adjustments. The interior upholstery is fabric, but of very high quality. The plastic used inside is also quite good and pleasant to the touch.
The steering wheel is equipped with adjustment in two planes – reach and height. The braiding depends on the configuration - two cheap ones don’t have it, while the rest have a leather-covered steering wheel. There is heating, and various controls are installed, for example, buttons for the multimedia system, call answering, climate, cruise control, etc.
The center console is, in principle, typical of a Corolla. Here, traditionally, a high-quality touch screen of the multimedia system is installed, and just below is a control unit for climate control, heated seats, etc. The instrument panel is equipped with a tachometer and speedometer, as well as a 4.2-inch color display, which displays various useful information.
Now, as for the Octavia. There is a lot of free space inside. Seats with lateral support have several types of adjustments, heating, ventilation, built-in memory, memory position settings, etc. As an additional option, it is possible to replace standard seats with sports ones.
The materials used here are high-quality plastic, and the upholstery can be fabric, leather or a combination of materials.
The steering wheel, depending on the configuration, may either have no braid or be covered in leather. The steering wheel can be adjusted in several planes - reach and height, and is also heated. Also on the steering wheel there are buttons for controlling the multimedia system, answering calls, climate control, cruise control and much more.
The dashboard is virtually identical to the Corolla, just with a slightly different design. Otherwise, it is the same speedometer, tachometer and color display with all sorts of useful information. The center console is also very similar.
A high-quality touch display is used for navigation and multimedia.
Immediately below it are additional controls, as well as a climate control unit with three knobs and several physical buttons.
If you choose based on the interior, which is better: Skoda-Octavia or Toyota-Corolla, then it is very difficult to answer 100%. If we take into account all the pros and cons in both cars, then, probably, the Skoda wins here by a small margin, at least for the fact that the interior is of higher quality, different types of finishes, and it is possible to combine materials.
Characteristics
Today's review continues on what is better than a Toyota Corolla or Skoda Octavia - characteristics. Here we will take a closer look at the two cars' engines, gearboxes and chassis. Let's look at these three sections in more detail.
Engines
Each car has several engines of different sizes at its disposal. In order not to write too much about each engine, below there will be a comparative table with the most interesting characteristics of all units.
Specifications | Octavia | Corolla |
Engine | 1,4 | 1,3 |
Power (hp) | 150 | 99 |
Acceleration to 100 km/h (sec.) | 8.1/8.2 (automatic transmission) | 12,6 |

Max. speed (km/h) | 250 | – |
Injection type | multipoint | – |
Fuel consumption (combined, l.) | 6,6 | – |
If you choose based on engines, which is better and more reliable - Skoda Octavia or Toyota Corolla, then, in general, there is parity. The engines on both cars are very reliable and without any serious problems, but not all. It is better to avoid buying a Skoda with a 1.4 engine and a Toyota with a 1.3 engine.
checkpoint
Which is better - Octavia or Corolla in terms of gearbox? The situation here is approximately the same as with engines. Toyota is equipped with very good and long-lasting 6-speed manual transmissions and its proprietary CVT variators. The boxes do not cause any problems in operation.
Skoda also has classic mechanics at 5 and 6 speeds, which work flawlessly and reliably, as well as automatic and robotic DSG gearboxes at 6 and 7 speeds, which are very sensitive to use and can seriously hit your pocket if used incorrectly. So in terms of gearbox, Toyota has a clear advantage.
Chassis
If we talk about what to choose - Octavia or Corolla in terms of chassis, then the advantage is on the side of the former. At the front, both cars have an independent McPherson-type suspension, but at the rear, the Toyota has a torsion beam, while the Skoda has an independent multi-link.
In terms of driving performance, control sensitivity, maneuvering and dynamics, both cars are almost equal, but the Octavia still slightly outperforms its opponent. And it will be cheaper to repair the Skoda chassis, because just one beam on a Corolla will cost a lot of money.

Skoda Octavia or Toyota Corolla?
There are often debates among car enthusiasts about which car is better. Moreover, often opponents do not fully operate with data about the cars they are comparing; more often it all comes down to the fact that they are comparing manufacturers, saying that one of them has a good reputation, which means that it produces good cars.
Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla
The comparison includes cars of different classes and price categories, different countries of manufacture, etc. We will also compare two cars, which are quite popular and belong to the middle class. So, the Czech model Skoda Octavia and the Japanese Toyota Corolla fall under comparison.
History of compared cars
Skoda Octavia
First, a little history. The Octavia model was produced by the Czechs from 1959 to 1971. Then its production stopped. After the purchase of Skoda by VAG, the Czechs began producing family cars, for which they borrowed the old name Octavia. The first cars with this name after the revival appeared in 1996. The third generation Octavia, which appeared in 2012, is now in production.
Toyota Corolla
Toyota released its first car called Corolla in 1966. But unlike the Czechs, the production of this car was not interrupted, so at the moment the Corolla has already 11 generations, the last of which also appeared in 2012. It should be noted here that this car is one of the best-selling in the world.
Now about the cars themselves. Only cars of the latest generations will be taken for comparison.
Comparison of overall dimensions
Let's start with the bodies. The Czechs have a winning position here, since they produce their brainchild in liftback and station wagon bodies. In addition, they produce charged versions of the RS, as well as the all-wheel drive Octavia Scout station wagon.
The Japanese cannot “boast” of this, since they produce their model only in a sedan body. But this is quite enough, because they don’t need to invent something to attract buyers, the history of the car does this well.
To make the comparison fair, the Octavia will only be considered in the liftback body. Let's go through the dimensions and characteristics. And for these cars they are:
Dimensional characteristics of Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla cars | |||
Parameter | Unit change | Octavia | Corolla |
Length | mm | 4659 | 4620 |
Width | mm | 1814 | 1775 |
Height | mm | 1461 | 1465 |
Wheelbase | mm | 2680 | 2700 |
Clearance | mm | 155 | 150 |
Curb weight | kg | 1250-1352 | 1225-1275 |
Trunk volume (min/max) | l | 568/1558 | 452/- |
Volume of the tank | l | 50 | 55 |
In the car weight indicator, two values are indicated because these cars are equipped with several types of engines and gearboxes, which affects the weight of the car.
As can be seen from the data, the Octavia is superior to the Corolla in almost all respects, especially in the size of the luggage compartment. The liftback body and rear folding seat allow you to significantly increase it; the Japanese sedan does not have this.
Exterior and interior
Salon Skoda-Octavia
The appearance of these cars is the work of an amateur. The Skoda Octavia has a more austere look, although not without some slight sporty notes. After all, the car is considered a family car, so it is more designed for middle-aged buyers.
Rear row of seats Skoda Octavia
Toyota Corolla is more aggressive in appearance and is more suitable for young people.
But in general, the corporate style of the companies is visible in both models; many features of these cars overlap with other models of these manufacturers.
In the interior of these cars, the trend remains the same as with the exterior. The interior design of the Octavia is quite strict, even a little boring, although it is equipped with modern equipment.
The instrument panels of these two cars differ little in configuration: they are analog-digital, with large information sensors on the sides and an on-board computer between them. All this is covered from above by semicircular visors.
But the appearance of the central console in the Corolla is more stylish; in the Octavia, this console is made more classically.
Toyota Corolla center console
As for the console equipment, both cars have nothing too special. The upper parts are reserved for deflectors, the main place on the console of both the “Czech” and the “Japanese” is reserved for the display of the multimedia system, below which is the climate control unit.
Toyota-Corolla
This is followed by transitions from the console to the central tunnel, on which the gearbox selectors and handbrake levers are located.
In general, both the Octavia and the Corolla interiors are thought out very well, but each in its own way.
Technical component of cars
Let's move on to the technical part. Here again the Czech model wins. It is offered with 4 power plants, one of which is diesel. Toyota Corolla can be equipped with three units, and all of them are gasoline.
Skoda Octavia petrol engines have volumes of 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 liters. Moreover, the weakest is the 1.6-liter version, this engine produces 110 hp. With. The 1.4-liter power plant is equipped with a direct injection system and supercharging, which provides it with 150 hp. With. at the exit. The 1.8-liter unit of this car produces 180 hp. With.
The only diesel unit has a volume of 2.0 liters and a power rating of 150 hp. With.

Now for Toyota engines. Its most “modest” engine has a volume of 1.33 liters, which allows it to develop only 99 hp. With. The second engine is 1.6 liter, with a power rating of 122 hp. With. The top one is the 1.8-liter unit with 140 hp. With. power.
Now on to the transmissions. All Octavia gasoline engines can be combined with either a manual transmission or a DSG automatic transmission. The diesel version is on sale only with DSG.
The Toyota Corolla has a 1.33-liter engine with a manual transmission, a 1.6-liter with a manual transmission or a CVT, and the top-end 1.8-liter unit with a CVT only.
Naturally, with weaker performance, Toyota lags behind in speed and dynamics. The Octavia's maximum speed varies from 190 to 219 km/h, and acceleration ranges from a maximum of 12 seconds/100 km/h to a minimum of 7.3 seconds.
The Corolla's maximum speed ranges from 180 to 195 km/h. And its acceleration varies from 12.6 to 10.2 seconds.
With fuel consumption, the situation is approximately the same; depending on the power plant and gearbox, Skoda consumes an average of 4.7 (diesel) to a maximum of 6.7 liters.
Toyota Corolla consumes an average of 5.6 to 6.6 liters.
Comparison of configurations
Video: Hyundai ELANTRA, Skoda OCTAVIA, Toyota COROLLA: big test C+
Let's move on to the configurations. The Skoda Octavia has three trim levels - Action, Ambition and the top-end Style. There is also a special Laurin&Klement anniversary package.
The basic package of Action includes:
- ABS, EBD, EBA systems;
- Fabric upholstery;
- Audio preparation;
- On-board computer;
- 2-range steering column adjustment;
- Electric window drives;
Toyota Corolla has four trim levels - Standard, Classic, Style and top-end Style+. Basic equipment Standard is provided only for cars with the weakest engine. It includes:
- ABS, EBD, EBA systems;
- Interior upholstery – fabric;
- Front armrest;
- Steering column – adjustable in 2 directions;
- Air conditioner;
- Audio preparation;
- On-board computer;
- Electric window drives;
Here you can see that the base Toyota Corolla is somewhat better equipped, but in general these cars differ little in terms of equipment included in one or another package.
Car prices
Finally, let's move on to the prices of these cars. This is where the situation is interesting. While losing in almost all respects, Korola wins in this comparison.
The cost of the basic Toyota model is 759,000 rubles. Octavia in the database will cost 833,000 rubles.
Further, the price of a car, due to better engines and equipment included in different configurations, increases, and in some cases significantly.
But a fully minced Corolla will cost less. The maximum price for a “Japanese” is 1,169,000 rubles. As for the “Czech”, the maximum price for a car with a publicly available configuration is 1,281,000 rubles. However, this car also has a special configuration, a car with which will cost even more – up to 1,579,000 rubles.
Conclusion
Well, after comparing these two cars, Skoda Octavia has more advantages.
The Toyota Corolla loses in almost all respects, but the long history of this model and its recognition by more than one generation does its job; for all its advantages, the Skoda Octavia does not reach the Toyota Corolla in sales. But this situation can change at any time, because Skoda has also proven itself quite well.
But still, it’s not worth arguing that one of these cars is better than the other. Each of these brands will have its own admirers, who will be difficult to convince.
So Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla are quite worthy rivals, and which of them is better is up to the buyer to decide.
