How to remove rear brake pads?

- Next, we try to rotate the drum in some direction. After rotating the drum about 30 degrees, tighten the guide bolts back evenly. Since there are no bolt holes under the current position of the drum, screwing the bolts into the cast surface will pull the drum out.
What to do if the drum does not spin? To do this, we take our sledgehammer and a handle.
We place the handle on the surface of the drum and begin to hit it with a sledgehammer. You don't need to knock in one place, you need to go around the whole circle. We knock until the drum begins to spin. Attention: do not hit the drum with a sledgehammer, otherwise you will split it.
- Having removed the drum, we see in front of us two pads, springs and a brake cylinder.
- We disconnect the guide springs from the pads using pliers, homemade hooks and other devices (see Figure 3).
- Remove the tension spring (see Figure 4).
- We remove the pads together with the lever, transfer the lever to a set of new pads.
- After removing the pads, compress the side lubs of the brake cylinder. Make sure that the new pads fit strictly into the grooves of the brake cylinder and the handbrake bar fits into the connector on the pads (see figure). Next, we hook the springs into place, do not forget about the handbrake cable - it needs to be hooked to the drive lever on the block.
How to install brake pads?

Replacing brake pads on disc brakes

For this reason, rear brake pads can be replaced half as often as front ones.

After this, unscrew the top bolt, things are much easier with it.

Using a crowbar or pry bar, move the caliper to the lower position; it should move from top to bottom. At this stage we will need a screwdriver. It plays the role of a vice. It must be installed between the brake disc and the caliper pushing piston.
Making a few turns will push the piston inward, allowing you to easily remove the caliper. If you can't do this, try using a crowbar.
However, be careful, as under the influence of such force you can break the top bolt, watch the process carefully.

Due to the fact that the parts may be old, there is a third option for removing the caliper. To do this, you need to find a rubber stopper on it. This is the plug under which the pressure flows. Take the 8 or 7 key and unscrew it a little. From there, brake fluid will flow under pressure. After this it will be much easier to press the piston.
After completing all the work, you will need to add brake fluid to the reservoir. The same procedure must be followed when replacing the pads on the other side of the car. If the car has a device such as ABS, then during installation, be careful not to damage the sensors that are located near the brake disc caliper.
- Step 3. Processing the brake disc
Now you can remove the old pads. Some models may have locking pins. They need to be carefully removed. Treat the brake disc with a fine metal brush or sandpaper.
This will contribute to better friction of the brake pads on the disc and less wear. Lubricate the vehicle caliper and threaded connections with graphite grease. Brake pads do not need to be lubricated under any circumstances.
If they have a protective film, remove it so that there is no unpleasant sound while driving.
- Step 4. Install new pads
Insert the new pads into place and return the caliper to its original position. There are times when the pads do not fit well, then their edges need to be slightly wiped with a file. Fix the caliper and tighten it with bolts.

Before installing the wheel, inspect the brake system hoses for leaks. If such places are identified, or the brake hose has cracks, it must be replaced.
On the other side of the wheel, the brake hose will also need to be replaced, even if it is in good condition.
This must be done because the brake hoses may be of different diameters inside, and when you press the pedal, the brakes will operate unevenly, since the pressure will be supplied to the calipers differently. All spring elements of the handbrake mechanism also need to be lubricated.
- Step 6. Filling the brake fluid
You can install the wheel back and start replacing the pads on the other side of the car. Upon completion of all work, add fluid to the reservoir under the hood. Use only the brand of fluid indicated on the reservoir cap. The use of other types of fluids may contribute to the destruction of the car's brake hoses.
