Comparing Corolla with Avensis

Comparing Corolla with Avensis

Home ... Toyota Corolla competitors - comparison with Jetta, Octavia, etc.

Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of the two rivals Corolla and Avensis. Let's go through the outside of the cars, look at the interior, and compare the strengths and weaknesses.

Both Corolla and Avensis cars are from the wizards of the Japanese automotive industry.

It is all the more interesting to compare power units, pricing policies, and perhaps we should listen to the opinions of those who have already driven these cars?

Exterior view from the side

The third generation Toyota Avensis is very presentable. Harmonious forms, as opposed to the futurism of individual elements, are fully consistent with the image of a modern urban handsome car, a modern type.

The exterior is a kind of cake, layered with restrained dynamics and classic smooth lines and shapes. Encased in a tight ring of chrome decor. Looking at this external splendor, it seems that the Avensis is a higher class car.

Undoubtedly, in 2013, the Toyota Corolla was the most anticipated model. The update to this car has been awaited for almost fifty years. The manufacturers' idea to make cars inexpensive and of high quality turned out to be fully successful.

The car is presented to motorists in the following configurations: L, LE and S.

Toyota received a new wheelbase, 16-inch steel wheels, halogen headlights with multi-reflection, a chrome pipe, and heated mirrors.

Interior

The interior of the five-seater Avensis was covered with high-quality material by the finishing masters of the Land of the Rising Sun. This is immediately obvious when you first get acquainted with the car.

But there is no pomp and pathos, all without unnecessary gloss, although the rich decoration catches the eye. We note the good ergonomics of the Avensis front panel. The steering wheel is comfortable and multifunctional.

The cabin is spacious, and five passengers of average build will not push each other with their elbows; there is enough space for everyone.

The interior of the Toyota Corolla car was left behind cheap production. The style of the old days, part of the interior made of plastic after a while makes the driver and passengers shudder from an unpleasant squeak. There are positive points that need to be mentioned.

We are talking, not surprisingly, about the simplicity of the interior. It is this that distinguishes the Corolla from other similar models. What else can be noted? Perhaps the seats are comfortable, on which even a “heavy weight” will be comfortable. There is enough space in the cabin, although the Corolla belongs to the sedan class.

Power unit or what was installed under the hood? Who's growling there?

On the Russian automobile market, Avensis was presented with three variants of gasoline engines with direct fuel injection and meeting Euro-4 standards.

  1. The 1.6-liter power unit with 132 l/power with a 5-speed manual transmission could accelerate to 100 km. in 10.4 sec. Fuel consumption figures are more than average: city - 8.3 liters, highway - 5.4 liters, combined cycle 6.5 liters.
  2. The 1.8-liter engine with 147 horses with a 5-speed manual transmission or Multidrive “variator” also showed average acceleration and fuel consumption results. Suffice it to say that in urban areas, the consumption of the Avensis was 6.7 liters.
  3. The most revered among Russian drivers was, of course, a car with a 2.0-liter engine producing 152 Japanese horses, which was coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission and a CVT. With a manual transmission, Avensis reached hundreds in 9.0 seconds. With the CVT the performance was slightly worse, 10.0 seconds. The speedometer limits in both cases were regulated by the figure 205 km/h. On average, a car with such a unit spent 6.9 liters with a manual transmission and 7.0 liters with a CVT.

Now there is no point in talking about the diesel engines that were on the Avensis. Due to their absence on the Russian market.

What else can be said about the positive? It is perhaps worth noting the five stars that Avensis earned while passing the EuroNCAP tests. Ensuring the safety of pedestrians near a car is somewhat worse.

Speaking about the technical characteristics of the Toyota Corolla, we note that the power of the power unit is 132 liters, with a volume of 1.8 liters paired with a manual transmission. Fuel consumption is also an important indicator. Fuel per 100 km, absorbs 8.7 in urban mode. On the highway, consumption is about 7 liters.

In car models where a CVT is installed, the following indicators are: 6.9 liters per 100 km. A car with automatic transmission accelerates to 100 km/h in 10 seconds. Drawing conclusions, we can say that fuel economy is one of the positive features of the Corolla. When passing crash tests, the car also showed itself on the positive side.

The differences between this model include the installation of three types of engines:

  • Petrol.
  • Diesel unit.
  • Hybrid version with several subspecies.

I am pleased with the confident operation of the 5-automatic transmission in tandem with the specified engines.

Equipment

European car enthusiasts can choose one of six Avensis trim levels.

  • Edition.
  • Active.
  • Select.
  • Icon.
  • Icon+.
  • Excel.

The basic version is packaged well, not to mention the “top” Icon+ and Excel.

As we said earlier, the Corolla car is offered for sale in three models. The L model has a good audio system, which includes four speakers. Among its classmates, the Corolla stands out for its on-board computer. In the S and LE series, the acoustics come with six speakers. For ease of driving, cruise control is installed. In the vehicles of these models, an iPod is connected to USB.

Prices

Now you can buy a 2008-2009 Avensis car second hand for approximately 620,000.00 - 650,000.00 rubles. The price depends on the mileage, condition of the car and the character of the owner. Car suppliers from European Union countries ask 870,000.00 rubles for a car.

The pricing policy of the Corolla car fluctuates and depends on dealers. The price is also affected by the vehicle's equipment and additional options that can be installed. The starting price in showrooms is just over $18,000.

Reviews from Corolla owners: a brief overview

Analyzing the reviews of Corolla car owners, we will say that the car is reliable. A true travel assistant, an economical and comfortable car. It performed equally well on highways and asphalt roads. Doesn't get fussy on dirt roads. Owners note the availability of spare parts for the car and their low cost. The controllability of the car, as the owners say, is very simple.

Bottom line or what do the numbers say?

In numbers, the car comparison looks like this:

  • Toyota Avensis reaches a speed of 4 km/h faster than its opponent Toyota Corolla.
  • Consumes 17% less fuel than its competitor (combined cycle).
  • On the highway it saves up to 15% fuel, unlike the Corolla.
  • In the city, consumption is 20% less.
  • 17% less exhaust gases into the atmosphere.
  • Safety in frontal and side collisions is 4 points better.
  • Pedestrian safety indicators are 7 points better.
  • The warranty mileage is 38% or 60,000 km longer.

Which inspires respect and forces you to pay more attention to the numbers.

We deliberately do not show the comparison in numbers. We hope that if you are interested, you will calculate the indicators yourself. Although the indicated % comparisons in this marathon are in favor of the Toyota Avensis.

Fans of Toyota Corolla will be unfairly outraged and they will be right.

The following indicators speak in favor of Sorolla: the larger volume of the power unit, the dimensions of the Avensis car exceed those of the competitor.

Features of the Toyota Avensis Verso

Specialists from the French company Toyota have developed a whole series of single-volume compact vans based on passenger cars. And they were united by one name Verso. This category includes the Yaris Verso, Corolla Verso, Avensis Verso and finally the Previa.

Style solutions

As you can guess from the name, the Toyota Avensis Verso minivan is developed based on the Avensis platform. Some identical features of the cars indicate that they belong to the same brand. And nothing more. There are no common body elements.

The model was developed by the Toyota ED2 center located in France. And production was focused on the European market. This model is for those who are not satisfied with a regular passenger car with a sedan, station wagon or hatchback body.

Distinctive characteristics of Toyota Avensis Verso:

  • high glazing line, making the car visually larger;
  • wide chrome moldings;
  • the body and optics will not allow you to “get lost in the crowd”, but they will not allow you to stand out too much in the traffic.

The car will allow you to enjoy driving both around the city and on the highway. It creates a special mood when you are not tired of the trip and want to move on. It reigns coziness, comfort, tranquility. Movement without unnecessary noise, measured and smooth. The bumps and unevenness of the road are almost imperceptible.

General characteristics

The wide doors allow you to sit down comfortably, one might even say, practically enter. The number of passengers that the Toyota Avensis Verso can carry is 6 or 7. The height of the car does not interfere with even very tall people.

Comfortable chairs with lumbar support and backrest tilt adjustment. The first two rows of seats slide forward and backward. The two back rows can be folded to create comfortable plastic tables. Or remove it completely, getting a spacious trunk for transporting large items.

But adjustments to the driver's seat could have been added.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evuGpXJfvKk

The trunk in normal condition has a volume of 282 liters. With two rows folded - 1556 liters. In addition, under the lid covering half the trunk, there is an additional compartment.

The spare tire is hidden under the driver's seat.

The dashboard is simple. It only includes the speedometer, fuel gauge and tachometer.

Modifications

The Toyota Avensis Verso has three modifications with the same 2.0 engine capacity:

  • Gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.0 and a power of up to 150 hp. With. The gearbox is automatic with 4 steps. Fuel consumption outside the city is 6.8 liters.
  • Similar engine, but five-speed manual transmission.
  • 2.0 turbodiesel with power up to 116 hp. With. Front-wheel drive. Five-speed manual transmission. Consumption per 100 km in the city is 8.1 liters, on the highway – 5.6 liters, in the combined cycle – 6.5 liters.

The fuel tank capacity is 60 liters. Maximum speed is 180 km/h with a diesel engine and 192 km/h with a gasoline engine. In the first case, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 12.5 s, in the second – in 11.4 s.

Timely maintenance will eliminate the need to repair Toyota Avensis Verso. This model is distinguished by the comfort and reliability characteristic of all models of this company.

The car can handle high speeds easily. Even when working to the limit, the movement remains just as smooth, without jerking or yawping along the road. Body roll when cornering is negligible for this height. The suspension absorbs minor road irregularities without transmitting them to the body. But if you hit a pothole, the car will shake.

Toyota Avensis Verso. Owner reviews

The owners claim that the car will last a long time if only high-quality diesel fuel is used.

Reviews indicate that the car is roomy, comfortable, and beautiful. All breakdowns occur only due to the poor quality of roads and fuel.

Among the advantages, reviews note reliable suspension, efficiency, and excellent handling. Among the shortcomings: the bottom, glasses and other parts of the body quickly rust; weak engine for this size; The floor is uneven if you remove the second row of seats.

Which car do you think is better than Toyota Corolla or Toyota Avensis and why????

Judging by the interior, when choosing an Avensis or a Corolla, it should be noted that a large Avensis will cost more due to the higher quality and more expensive interior trim.

Toyota Avensis 2 review for those who want to buy!

Chassis comfort The small Toyota Corolla is positioned as a family car - thanks to this, it is equipped with a fairly soft suspension that provides comfort even when passing large Toyota Corolla or Toyota Avensis. If you are considering a Corolla or Avensis, it is worth saying in advance that the larger sedan has a fairly high cost, which explains the high quality of its interior trim.

A big difference Despite the apparent proximity and even the use of common technical solutions, there is a real gulf between Avensis and Corolla.

This is an indispensable merit of the company's engineers - there are no interfering hinges, protruding arches and a convenient height for loading.

Dynamic capabilities

The rear seat of the compact Toyota sedan can easily be called one of the best in the compact class.

However, the Toyota Corolla does not upset its passengers either in terms of headroom or in the distance to the front row of seats.

The trunk volume, equal to liters, cannot be called a record, but the Corolla is ahead of many of its competitors in terms of ease of use of the cargo compartment.

The loading height of the Toyota is low, and there are no strongly protruding wheel arches or low-hanging hinges inside.

If you are considering a Corolla or Avensis, it is worth saying in advance that the larger sedan has a fairly high cost, which explains the high quality of its interior trim.

The high front panel of the Toyota Avensis looks solid, and the silver plastic of the center console is pleasant to the touch and visually highlights the main controls, allowing you to instantly find the right key.

But the large dials of the Avensis dashboard with soft backlighting and large digitization look especially beautiful. The Toyota Avensis equipment also exceeds all expectations - in the maximum version you can find seven airbags, a multimedia system with a touch screen and a standard navigation system, as well as dual-zone climate control.

Puzzle: Avensis vs Corolla

The front seats of the mid-size Toyota sedan are pleasing with perforated leather upholstery, which reliably holds a person, but they are disappointing with insufficiently high backrests, forcing the driver to constantly be in tension. The rear of the Avensis is even more spacious than the Toyota Corolla, but the increase in headroom is not very large.

Three adults will feel comfortable here, but tall people will suffer from contact with the ceiling on large uneven surfaces.

The trunk of the Toyota Avensis, with its volume equal to liters, is also difficult to classify as a record one, but in terms of ease of use it is not inferior to the smaller model participating in the comparison. The Avensis's cargo space is nicely shaped and padded to accommodate valuable, sensitive items.

Dynamic capabilities In terms of its technical characteristics, the Toyota Corolla significantly surpasses its competitors, second only to such recognized leaders as the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus. You have to switch to the next stage quite early, as a result of which the Toyota Corolla loses precious time.

The larger Toyota Avensis is equipped with a similar engine, albeit with 10 more horsepower, so it will be very interesting to find out which is better - it or the compact Corolla.

I would like to thank Toyota engineers for the work they have done - this rather large sedan accelerates quite quickly from minimum speed and is in no way inferior to the smaller model.

However, the problem with the lack of traction at high speeds remains the same, although it is not felt so acutely. But fuel consumption does not exceed that of a light Toyota Corolla and fluctuates in the range of 6-8 liters depending on the driving mode.

Chassis comfort The small Toyota Corolla is positioned as a family car - thanks to this, it is equipped with a fairly soft suspension that provides comfort even when going over large bumps.

On a bad road, the Corolla's behavior can be called exemplary due to the absence of strong impacts and shaking.

However, it is felt that Toyota saved on noise insulation, since unpleasant sounds are heard from under the bottom, distracting the driver from driving the car.

The seats in Toyota are also pleasing with their well-developed profile shape, which holds the driver when making sharp turns.

The ergonomics of the space for the driver are impeccable, everything is within easy reach - buttons and keys are at hand, although the gear selector in the manual transmission is somewhat tight, but the speeds are switched on clearly, and it is impossible to confuse them.

Expensive electronics and a large multimedia display in the TOP configuration of the car after a year of production do not in any way smooth out the impression of cheapness that the interior leaves with its finishing with simple materials and the low height of the front panel.

But the comfort of the rear sofa for a compact car remains the best for the C-Class, there is room to stretch out your legs and comfortably sit for three passengers of average height, and there is also enough headroom.

Although the trunk in the Corolla is not that big. This is an indispensable merit of the company's engineers - there are no interfering hinges, protruding arches and a convenient height for loading.

Unlike the Corolla, the front panel of the Toyota Avensis is taller and more solid; the silver color of the soft plastic of the center console helps you immediately find the necessary buttons and keys, which clearly stand out against its background.

Toyota corolla 1.33 vs avensis

The large size of the instruments and large digitization are clearly visible on the dashboard, especially in the dark with beautiful and soft backlighting. The perforated leather of the front seats looks great; the chair itself holds the person firmly in place, but the insufficient height of the backrest keeps the driver in constant tension.

The TOP version of Avensis offers a multimedia system with a large display, climate control in two zones, seven airbags and a navigation system. The Toyota Avensis has even more space for rear passengers than the Corolla, but the height of the ceiling is depressing - tall people feel uncomfortable here.

The size of the Avensis trunk is a little larger - liters, but even here the use of internal space is at a high level, soft upholstery and correct shapes allow you to transport fragile things without fear of breaking or spoiling them. Judging by the interior, when choosing an Avensis or a Corolla, it should be noted that a large Avensis will cost more due to the higher quality and more expensive interior trim.

Dynamics To understand the difference, let's compare Toyota Corolla with 1. Good traction at low and medium speeds of the Corolla engine allows the car to confidently pick up speed up to speed 4. The driver, in order not to lose acceleration dynamics, engages the next gear a little earlier and loses time.

But this factor is not so important if you do not participate in competitions. Fuel consumption here is low, only if it starts smoothly from traffic lights in the city.

With an aggressive driving style, consumption increases to 9 liters or more.

Comparison with Avensis — DRIVE2

And so, only half a year has passed since I moved to this basin.
The transition was quite painful, since the Yolka was a C-class, and the previous one was a D-class Toypta Avensis. Of course, Elka lacks many things from Avika.

And so, according to my feelings, what is missing: 1) The engine with a volume of only 1.6 liters and a power of 122 horsepower is normal for transporting one ass, but already 4-5 the car is running hard. Especially when overtaking. The dynamics are certainly not enough. The engine doesn’t let you step on well. 2) Electronics package - in winter there is a very lack of heating for the wipers.

Read also:  How to choose a radar detector

But in principle, this little detail can be eliminated by replacing the glass, but somehow it’s not a good idea. 3) Active and passive safety - 2 airbags on the Elka versus 6 on the Avik. The Elka does not have anti-skid, anti-skid, or directional stability control. I felt it during the first snow when I couldn’t get going normally. Avik stopped me from touching things.

And there was no such thing that I couldn’t climb some hill in winter. Of course, there are not enough such things and I regret that I did not take the two-liter version of the Christmas tree. 4) Avik is more stable on the highway. Of course, the car is nimble and nimble compared to the Avik, but on the highway the Avik handles the road and turns sooooo well.

5) XZ lights shine like headlights on halogen, but on expensive and good xenon without lenses - it’s disgusting. Avik gives a head start here. Although you need to put on lenses and not have brains. Overall the light is worse. The fog lights shine too diffusely. IMHO Avik had more evenly distributed illumination.6) The A-pillars are too large. The review cuts well.

Although all cars have wide pillars. Security, yopta.

7) Inconvenient activation of the rear fog lights - it would be easier to turn them on on the steering wheel, like the front ones, rather than placing them on a separate button. Although the levers on the steering wheel are the same as on Toyota. Very strange:)

Now on the plus side

1) The engine for 1.6 is quite nimble. If you compare it with the Corolla, it will be faster. 2) Consumption, of course, is pleasing: 7 liters of gasoline (or 8 liters of gas), this is quite normal. Although the Avik ate 9 benzos with the Conder. 3) The Conder and the climate are very cool. Cool and heat instantly.

The smart climate itself chooses where to blow to make it better :) 4) Popogreyka - of course it’s nice in winter :) 5) It’s possible to install gas on this engine without any problems. Also still a small thing.6) The steering wheel and controls in general are much lighter and more responsive. Perhaps due to the fact that the Christmas tree has an electric booster, and the Avik has a hydro booster. Although I don't know.

7) Although the Elka is not much smaller in size compared to the Avik, its handling and maneuverability, especially in the city, are much better. Turning the steering wheel and turning around will also be better.8) The height in the cabin is a little higher (it feels). And therefore there is more space above your head.9) Comfortable chair, it’s a pity without electric drives.

Handles, all hands :)10) Large trunk. At first it seemed that the car’s trunk was tiny, but as it turned out, it was nothing at all. 11) The prices for spare parts were very pleasing. I was especially pleased that the car does not have expensive elements that are often killed. And the price of the original filters is generally a pittance, compared to the Avik.

12) Good music - a mafon with a 6-disc changer and a capable MP3, and even with a standard AUX. But this is also a minus - you cannot install a virtual changer so that it understands the flash drive.

13) And of course the overall design of the interior and exterior. Cool blue backlight (which is very bright, however). Externally, it is very similar to the Corolla and Kia Cherato (the Cherato generally has the same engine and suspension. The only difference is in the body)

In general, if only we could add electronics to the car, it wouldn’t have any price :)

Queen of the people: test drive Toyota Corolla

10 generations of Corolla have sold more than 40 million copies around the world. Impressive! Naturally, buyers throughout the entire time “voted with their rubles” for Toyota for a reason.

The model has always represented eternal values, understandable in any part of the world: simplicity, reliability, accessibility. Of course, today the world market dictates its own rules; simplicity will no longer attract anyone, and this has to be taken into account. And accessibility is a relative concept.

Toyota, of course, understands this, and the Corolla brand is not going to give up its position so easily.

On the other hand, the above-mentioned regalia is not given for nothing, and with it comes responsibility. Each new generation of a car must not only be better than the previous one.

It should set new standards in the class, raise the bar for quality, comfort, ease of use and other things important for a modern car.

Of course, all this sounds like an advertising slogan, but if you think about it, it is so. And competitors are not asleep either...

So what does the current, eleventh generation of the Japanese bestseller offer the buyer?

Avant-garde in the service of classics

The top version of the Corolla 1.8 CVT sparkles in front of me with dark varnish. The dimensions are deceptive - it looks like it should be a compact class car, and the numbers are not much different from competitors (4,620 mm x 1,775 mm x 1,465 mm).

However, you can't help but feel that this is a Camry, no less, especially when viewed from the front or rear. Or rather, it's not just a matter of size. The design as a whole is an evolutionary continuation of the appearance of the previous generation, where the emphasis was on solidity and solidity.

The current Corolla has inherited these features to the fullest.

However, this is not the precise and at the same time boring classic that we are used to seeing, say, on thoroughbred “Germans”.

Bizarre shapes of large headlights and taillights, restrained but clear edges of stampings on the sides and bumpers, a large radiator grille protruding forward - all this gives the sedan a bit of aggression and, in places, even avant-gardeness.

And most importantly, concisely and without going overboard. Perhaps this is exactly what the sometimes too conformist people's car lacked.

Let's get comfortable behind the wheel. It wasn’t cramped in the previous Corolla, but here it’s completely orderly - even tall drivers won’t complain about the lack of space.

Looking ahead a little, I will say that the second row in this regard is generally gorgeous - when sitting “behind you”, the amount of space in the knees is such that you can even cross your legs! In a word, the “extra” (compared to its predecessor) centimeters were not in vain.

The high dashboard with minimal changes is borrowed from the Toyota Auris hatchback. The design matches the appearance - unusual, but not to the detriment of ergonomics. The panel looks quite massive and is unusually extended into the cabin.

But you don’t feel any inconvenience from this, rather, on the contrary - numerous climate system keys and an audio center with a touch screen are at hand, you don’t have to reach anywhere.

It’s not even worth talking about the quality of materials and assembly - everything is more than up to par, hard plastic is hard to find here.

Controversial issues can only be found through an effort of will. For example, large and easily readable tachometer and speedometer scales have radial digitization - not everyone will find this convenient.

The seat heating buttons are hidden under an additional cover at the bottom of the center console, next to the USB connector and 12-volt outlet. The only real drawbacks include the standard navigation system that does not work in Russia.

However, most of our drivers are accustomed to making do with third-party devices.

We should also say a few words about the climate system. The car was tested on hot Moscow days, and - a situation familiar to many - the dark interior periodically heated up so much that getting into it was tantamount to a feat.

But as soon as I started the engine and turned on the air conditioning, the interior space cooled so quickly that I didn’t even have time to sweat.

Frankly, I have never seen such performance in more expensive and comfortable cars.

The instrument panel with its dim blue backlight is easy to read. But not everyone likes radial digitization.

For rear passengers, as I already mentioned, the Corolla provides plenty of space. There is a margin both in front of the knees and above the head: I counted at least 20 and 10 cm, respectively, despite the fact that my height is 182 cm.

Any sedan of a higher class will be jealous! At the same time, the width of the cabin still does not provide comfortable seating for three people, unless they are of small build.

Even the wide armrest, extending from the back, hints with its entire appearance - the third wheel!

But luggage space is not the model’s trump card. The trunk is not a record holder in terms of volume - 452 liters; even budget models sometimes offer more space for luggage. The opening is wide, this is a definite plus.

However, when it comes to transporting long items, the owner will have to suffer - the backs of the rear seats do not fold completely, forming not just a step, but a sloping surface.

And the “entrance” into the cabin is fairly squeezed by the wheel arches on the sides and the power element of the body on top.

Confidence in everything

The 1.8-liter engine comes to life with the press of the “Start” button. Almost silent - it’s clear that the engineers worked hard on sound insulation. The unit produces 140 hp. at 6,400 rpm and torque of 173 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Encouraging figures for the sedan's less than 1,300kg curb weight. Let's go for a ride!

The front seats with developed lateral support are moderately soft and very comfortable, even despite the lack of lumbar support. And in the back there is space worthy of business class!

The car accelerates confidently from very low revs. You definitely won’t be an outsider at a traffic light - even without pressing the gas pedal (which, by the way, is quite long-travel) all the way, we have quite decent acceleration.

In the region of 3,500 - 4,000 rpm you feel a slight pickup - remember the maximum torque? It is noteworthy that in numbers the dynamics are not so impressive - a little more than 10 seconds from zero to 100 km/h.

But the Corolla is so easy to climb that the driver gets the feeling of two liters under the hood, no less. For such impressions, however, you will have to pay in the literal sense of the word.

Fuel consumption in the city did not drop below 8 l/100 km, and even then, provided that you were gentle with the gas pedal. And those who like to start “faster” can easily see on the display of the on-board computer 10 liters per “hundred”.

For active driving enthusiasts, “Sport” and “Manual” modes are provided.

The first will maintain high engine speeds without lowering the tachometer needle below 2,500 rpm, the second allows the driver to independently switch virtual gears, simulated by the Multidrive continuously variable variator.

True, the manual mode is still not completely manual - if the speed drops too much or, conversely, reaches the red zone, the computer will change the “gear” for the pilot.

At the same time, it cannot be said that the sedan provokes active driving. Rather, on the contrary, it strongly encourages measured movement, invitingly blinking the econometer on the central display. And in this discipline, Corolla feels at ease.

At 100 km/h, the tachometer needle barely touches the 2,000 mark, fuel consumption when driving on the highway is a little more than 6 l/100 km, the silence in the cabin is beautiful! Cruising speed can be 110 or 120 km/h, with a similar level of comfort.

The full-size spare wheel located under the trunk floor occupies the entire niche, barely leaving room for a set of tools in the case. The folding mechanism for the rather thick backrests is not very convenient - they do not take a horizontal position, so it will be difficult to put something on top.

Of course, all these pleasant properties are the merit of not only the engine, but also the CVT transmission. The units get along well with each other. The variator, as expected, works smoothly and quickly.

An interesting feature is that it imitates the operation of a traditional gearbox, without making the engine howl on one note, but quite naturally increasing the speed when accelerating and releasing the gas before “switching.”

Frankly, I tried the modes solely out of curiosity; in ordinary life, the traditional “D” covered all my needs.

The suspension also left a positive impression. Moderately dense and comfortable, it can easily protect the driver and passengers from Russian road realities. From a technical point of view, there is nothing special here - a classic MacPherson strut at the front and a semi-independent beam at the rear. However, the settings of this “traditional set” can be considered close to ideal.

At least in terms of comfort. At the same time, the suspension, perhaps, cannot be called absolutely all-consuming, but you still have to look for a pit on which it will save! The car is not bothered by joints on overpasses, ruts, or potholes with sharp edges. The car can handle even a grader or a bumpy dirt road.

You just need to remember about the small 150mm ground clearance.

At the same time, the chassis is not conducive to active driving - you can feel some rolliness and slow reactions to steering inputs when cornering at high speed. Of course, there is no question of any borderline situations; everything is safe and predictable.

When moving calmly, such a nuance will not even be noticeable. But if the “engine-variator” combination still allows you to “play around,” then the suspension shows with all its might that this is not for it: “Do you want to go faster? You can, of course, but it’s better to control yourself.”

Well, Corolla has never been a driver's car, and the current generation is no exception.

The engine compartment is arranged quite tightly.

In my opinion, the Corolla wears the crown for good reason. The car is extremely well balanced, and this is its main advantage. A pleasant engine, an excellent transmission, decent comfort, good equipment - what are the ingredients for success? True, not everyone in Russia can be with the queen.

Toyota has traditionally been priced in the literal sense of the word, and the cost of the model varies from 669,000 (for the simplest version with a 1.3 liter engine and manual transmission) to 945,000 rubles (1.8 with CVT). Quite a lot! The copy we tested cannot be called popular at all - the price exceeds a million.

5.4 The heir to the throne looks youthful and even sometimes bold compared to her predecessor. The new Corolla doesn't look like a Corolla at first glance. Now she won't get lost in the flow, but fans of the old school may not be delighted.
5.7 The interior diligently creates the feeling of a more expensive and representative car.

And no wonder, because Corolla now partially covers the audience of the Avensis that left the market. Deep seats with developed lateral support are very comfortable, ergonomics are excellent.

3.9 Hauling bulky or long cargo is not one of the Corolla's strengths. The trunk cannot be called small, and it is quite convenient to use.

However, the possibilities of transformation are scarce, and the luggage space does not indulge in niches-pockets. As a last resort, you can use the spacious second row of seats to transport luggage.

5.3 The suspension settings eloquently indicate that comfort is paramount in the Corolla.

The car doesn’t mind most of the road potholes and potholes, the seats are comfortable and conducive to long-distance voyages, passengers are offered a powerful climate system, pleasant music, armrests and cup holders...

4.7 Not very fast on paper, in real life the Corolla with a 1.8 liter engine turned out to be quite a playful and playful car.

Of course, the strength is still not enough to compete with the giants, but the car will not be a slow black sheep in the city.

4.5 Corolla is not a driver's car. So it was and so it is at the moment. Handling here is a term that has to do with driving safety rather than driving enjoyment.

If you don’t get hung up on this issue, the car will not disappoint. Obedient reactions, adequate feedback, moderately heavy steering wheel on the highway and weightless when parking.

4.6 The brakes are good. Disc mechanisms on all wheels will stop the car on demand. Could you really expect anything else from Corolla?..

Well, safety on such an iconic car has always been a top priority. In addition to standard front airbags, the version we tested was equipped with side airbags, knee airbags for the driver, and air curtains on all windows. There are also plenty of active “helpers”: ABS+EBD, Brake Assist, ESP and traction control.

Despite its somewhat avant-garde appearance, the Corolla looks solid and impressive, especially in dark colors. The design has not yet become familiar, so the owner is guaranteed increased ease of use on the road.

Competitors

The maximum version “Prestige Plus” that we tested is no longer offered on the Russian market, therefore in the comparison table we indicated the Corolla in the most affordable configuration with a 1.8 liter engine. Since with this unit you can only get a continuously variable transmission, cars of a similar class and comparable price with automatic transmission are given as opponents.
