"Sporty", "Green", "Retro" and "Robofriend" from Toyota at the Tokyo Motor Show
Toyota Motor Corp.
will present several interesting concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show, which will take place this month. The program includes: a compact sports car, a futuristic hydrogen-powered car and... Pocket humanoid robot “Kirobo”. This exhibition reflects the commitment of Toyota Motor Corp. create a reputation as a top stylish automaker.
S-FR Concept. A two-door sports coupe with an extended hood and a powerful front air intake grille. The sporty subcompact is no larger than the company's Yaris, but has four different seats.
Designers kept the S-FR low and wide, taking cues from rally racing cars that also feature a mid-mounted engine for greater stability. Toyota has created a concept that looks quite decent.
A lightweight sports car with optimal weight distribution and independent suspension, it corners surprisingly easily. There is no information about the engine yet, but it is already known that the car has a six-speed manual transmission.
The car will be lower in class than the Toyota 86 sporty coupe. The car, previously sold in the US as the Scion FR-S, was developed in conjunction with Subaru, which sells its own version known as the BRZ.
The S-FR is very similar to the Mazda MX-5 Miata. There is nothing strange about this, given Toyota's new alliance with Mazda Motor Corp. But S-FR designer Koichi Matsumoto says the concept was done entirely on his own, with no plans for further collaboration with a smaller Japanese partner. The S-FR concept is shorter and taller than the Miata MX-5, and has two more seats.
Koichi Matsumoto said he gave the S-FR a massive grille to convey more of the car's "sportiness." He described S-FR's "face" as friendly and even cute. The idea is to express a warm, simple structure that embodies the very meaning of movement.
Toyota gets even more futuristic with the FCV Plus Concept!
Toyota has unveiled a possible successor to the company's hydrogen-fueled Mirai, which went on sale in Japan last year and this year in the United States. Idea: to evolve the “eco-car” into an “energy-car”.
In the FCV Plus Concept, the "energy tanks" are reduced and packaged between the front wheels, while the hydrogen tank and batteries are located between the rear wheels. Four motorized wheels optimize space for four passengers. Blue glass space drop and aerodynamic trim covering the rear wheels.
At the bottom of the car are "tunnels" that direct air between the rear wheels through a trapezoidal arch, a sort of giant diffuser.
"The company is advancing the concept of a fuel cell vehicle, turning 'eco cars' into 'energy cars,'" Toyota said. “The vehicle acquires a stable source of electricity for use at home or on the road.”
Retro, "art in craft". Another concept from Toyota, the Kikai, has roots in the monozukuri company. Kikai is a Japanese term for art and craft.
Seeing how “Mad Max” perverts the engine, suspension, and frame of a car, Kikai elevates car engineering to the level of art, turning the concept into a real masterpiece that works like an expensive Swiss watch.
"Kikai" also means "car" in Japanese.
“Cars should be objects of admiration,” says Toyota.
“Kikai is a concept designed to show and highlight the fundamentality of a car: its beauty is in its simplicity of movement.” Every detail, from the exhaust pipe to the fuel tank, is turned into not just parts, but a kind of exquisite “machinery” to demonstrate the “inner” beauty, usually hidden from view by sheet metal. To better connect a person with the road, the company made small windows next to the driver’s feet, which provide a view of the road surface and the front suspension.
The driver became the “center” of the concept. In the most literal sense, the driver’s seat is located in the center of the car at the apex of the “driver and two passengers” triangle.
Finally, Toyota brings to your attention the Kirobo Mini, a miniature version of the Kirobo robot partner.
This humanoid-eyed owl already holds two Guinness World Records, having spent 18 months orbiting Earth in the International Space Station. First record - Kirobo became the first “robot satellite” in outer space.
The other is recognition of the highest level of conversational function. Kirobo's trick is to keep the conversation going in a group of people. That is, he quite adequately responds to random remarks from his interlocutor through voice and language recognition software.
It's a technology that has captured the public imagination in Japan, where society has rapidly aged, and has generated legions of isolated elderly people who could benefit from such communication.
However, Toyota thought "grown-up" that the Kirobo's 34cm (13-inch) height was too bulky to accompany a person on the go. As a result, Kirobo Mini, a 4-inch mini robot friend, appeared.
The palm-sized Kirobo Mini is small enough to fit in your car's cup holder. But don't expect a good conversation if you're driving on US roads. Kirobo Mini speaks only Japanese.

Compact sports car Toyota S-FR will receive the “heart” of Corolla
A few weeks ago, the Japanese presented to the world public an abstract model of the Toyota S-FR, imagining a “hot” coupe a la the Mazda MX-5 roadster. At the time of the presentation, conversations about the serial production of the model assembled from this prototype were conducted as purely hypothetical.
But now information has already arrived that it turns out that serial production is just a stone's throw away, because the specification for the car intended for the native Japanese market has already been published.
I agree that this news was completely unexpected, due to the fact that in the current global automotive practice, in most cases at least six months pass from a concept to a production model. And then they were too late to demonstrate the concept, just as they had already made it into a series.
The new compact sports coupe Toyota S-FR will be equipped with a one and a half liter engine under the hood, which in most cases is equipped with one of the Toyota Corolla modifications. The power of this engine is 130 horsepower. If someone thinks that this kind of power is not enough for a sports car, then let him first study the hardware, which indicates the weight of this car .
And the weight with which it presses on the asphalt is not at all like a sports car - about one ton. In order to shoot a “lightweight” on the highway, one hundred and thirty horses will be more than enough. The four-cylinder petrol engine of the Toyota S-FR will work with a six-speed manual transmission.
The Japanese, by the way, also mentioned the approximate price for this compact sports car. The amount announced was 12,500 American dollars, which at the domestic exchange rate now amounts to about 766 kilorubles.
This price is very competitive with, say, the price of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which now costs twice as much.
But this very model is positioned as the main rival for the Toyota S-FR in this market segment.
Published information about the Toyota S-FR will not necessarily be exactly the same for a model intended for sale abroad in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Since the Japanese indicated them in relation to their own car market. For America, the specific equipment will be the second.
It cannot be ruled out that for export options the Japanese will install both a second engine and an automatic transmission .
Mazda MX-5 Roadster
In terms of size, the Toyota S-FR and Mazda MX-5 Miata are virtually the same, but the wheelbase of the Toyota S-FR is 17 centimeters longer, and this event gave the designers the opportunity to shove two more passenger seats back. The Miata is made in the traditions of the genre - a full-fledged two-seater coupe. The Japanese version of the Mazda MX-5 Miata has a 131-horsepower 1.5-liter SkyActiv engine under the hood.
He works with both manual and automatic transmissions.
In 14 days at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Toyota S-FR will be presented in a production version. In the same place, the Japanese plan to show the world the hydrogen FCV Plus and other futuristic models.

Scion Fr-s review
Scion Fr-s, 2012
Toyota and Subaru are jointly developing a new rear-wheel drive coupe. The compact car should appear in 2012, but for now Toyota is intriguing the public with concepts. First they were shown at motor shows in Tokyo and Geneva, and now another prototype has been prepared for the New York Auto Show. They just presented it under the Scion brand and called it FR-S.
The Scion FR-S is positioned as an affordable sports coupe, the successor to the popular Toyota Corolla AE86. It's a classic sports car with a long hood and a rear-set interior. It reaches 4272 mm in length, 1816 mm in width and 1204 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2570 mm.
In profile, the low FR-S is very reminiscent of the iconic Toyota 2000 GT, which James Bond himself drove. Scion has muscular flared wheel arches and wide rear fender shoulders, and huge 20-inch alloy wheels.
The pointed “nose”, like a shark’s, is combined with a wide “mouth” of the air intake and predatory squinted LED headlights. The rear section is highlighted at night by LED illumination of the Scion lettering.
Downforce is increased by a spoiler integrated into the trunk lid and a huge diffuser.
Images of the interior are kept secret, but it is easy to guess that the car will have a 2+2 seating arrangement. It is also known that there are sports seats inside, separated by a high central tunnel.
The Scion FR-S is equipped with a 2.0-liter flat-four petrol engine producing about 200 hp. With. The production model will also be available with a more powerful 260-horsepower version of this engine. The rear-wheel drive coupe will be equipped with a choice of 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The concept also gets huge 18-inch carbon-ceramic brake discs.
The appearance of the concept indicates that Scion will produce its own version of the coupe. If the Toyota version is offered for Europe and Japan, then its brother will be available in the USA.
Scion Fr-s, 2012
The rear-wheel drive coupe in the version for the North American market, as expected, will be the most affordable, and when comparing trim levels, the gain is even more noticeable. In Japan, the Toyota 86 is a little more expensive, in Europe it is much more expensive.
Toyota Motor has published official data on the cost and trim levels of the Scion FR-S model. This is the North American version of the Toyota 86, a rear-wheel drive coupe created in conjunction with Subaru and which has a technical twin to the Subaru BRZ.
The American price, which is not surprising, is again the lowest. The FR-S will be offered in only one trim level, and its cost will be $24,200. Add the $730 shipping fee to the dealer, and the actual price of the car will be $24,930, but even then it will remain the lowest for the model.
By comparison, in Europe the Toyota GT 86 cannot be purchased for less than €29,990 (about $39,468). With similar configurations, the difference in cost thus reaches almost $13,500.
Moreover, the American FR-S is even cheaper than the Toyota 86 for the Japanese domestic market. In its homeland, the cost of the Toyota 86 is 1,990,000 - 3,050,000 yen (about 26,135 - 40,055 dollars).
At the same time, the initial cost refers to a configuration that is characterized by extremely sparse equipment and is intended for tuning - for example, it does not have air conditioning, the bumpers are not painted in body color, and the wheels are stamped steel.
The only configuration of the Scion FR-S is much closer in composition to the maximum for Japan and Europe. It includes 6 airbags, a full set of electronic safety systems (ABS+ EBD+BA+TRAC+VSC), a 300 W Pioneer audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, a leather steering wheel and much more. etc.
Americans will be offered seven body colors: Raven, Asphalt, Hot Lava, Argento, Ultramarine, Firestorm and Whiteout.
There is only one configuration, but the buyer will be able to choose between a manual transmission and an automatic transmission. The given price (24,930) refers to the version with “mechanics”. With a 6-speed automatic transmission, the car will cost $26,030.
Scion Fr-s, 2012
Along with the name, the concept also changed its appearance: in the American version it has been noticeably redesigned.
Toyota Motor presented at the International Auto Show in New York the development of the idea of an inexpensive rear-wheel drive coupe, which has been developed jointly with Subaru over the past few years. Following the FT-86 II concept that debuted in Geneva, its American interpretation called Scion FR- is shown in New York. S.
In comparison with the already familiar FT-86 II, the “American” received its own appearance: with less pronounced elements characteristic of external tuning, but no less aggressive. Scion FR-S acquired its own front bumper and massive radiator grille, and received new LED optics.
The front fenders have no ventilation holes behind the wheel arches, and the rear wing on the trunk lid has been eliminated. The rear optics have been changed, and the bumper has acquired a more than massive diffuser.
When viewed in profile, it is easy to notice the new shape of the sills and stampings around the wheel arches, as well as the new side mirrors.
At the rear, there is also a noticeable change in the shape of the roof, which falls onto the rear window - this made the car even more individual, the developers say.
The differences between the Scion FR-S and the Toyota FT-86 II are purely external. Under the hood is the same Subaru 4-cylinder 2.0-liter boxer gasoline engine, modified to accommodate Toyota's direct fuel injection system. The developers still do not provide its characteristics.
There is also no specific information about when the car will hit the market. According to previous plans, this should happen in 2012, and, apparently, the developers intend to adhere to the chosen schedule. The current debut, however, puts an end to the debate about under which brand the rear-wheel drive coupe will appear overseas. Scion, Toyota's youth brand for the US market, has been approved as such.
Scion Fr-s, 2012
Toyota's new compact sports coupe will be sold in the United States as the Scion FR-S. These initials stand for “front-engine, rear-wheel drive, sport.”
In other words, this is a small sports coupe for drivers who value speed and good dynamics. Perhaps, after testing on American highways, a car under the Japanese brand will appear here too. The FR-S doesn't fit into existing categories.
It's rear-wheel drive, so it won't compete with the Volkswagen GTI or Mazda Speed3. But at the same time, it is light and small, so it will also avoid comparisons with the heavier Ford Mustang and entry-level Chevrolet Camaro.
But its price in the States of $24,930 with delivery will make many prefer this car to the four above. The FR-S is the production twin of the Subaru BRZ.
Toyota's boxer 4-cylinder engine with direct injection produces 100 hp. per liter of naturally aspirated displacement is a good benchmark for high-performance engines. The car body is made of high-strength sheet steel, the hood is made of aluminum. The FR-S has a lower center of gravity than the Porsche Cayman and sits 10 centimeters lower than the Nissan 70Z.
Weight distribution across the axles is 53-47 (front-rear), which, according to chief engineer Tesuya Tada, makes the FR-S more manageable than the supposedly perfect 50-50 weight distribution. The FR-S has a softer front MacPherson strut setup than its BRZ sibling, but it has a fairly stiff double wishbone suspension at the rear. Front and rear disc brakes are ventilated.
The Torsen limited slip differential distributes torque and is designed to prevent the car from spinning out of control during a skid. Oddly enough, the FR-S has the same tires as... Toyota Prius.
Low rolling resistance provides better fuel economy and allows the car to drift in corners, which, coupled with such a weight distribution, will certainly be appreciated by fans of extreme sports.
The gear ratios of the six-speed gearbox also correspond to a sporty driving style.
Standard features include 17-inch wheels, variable-pitch wipers, halogen headlights, cruise control, an immobilizer, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a 300-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with HD radio, USB and Bluetooth.
The price includes two years of free service and roadside assistance. Despite the fact that Scion claims acceleration to hundreds in 7 seconds, the best result for the journalists who tested the new product is 8.3 seconds.

Compact sports car Toyota S-FR may get a 1.2-liter turbo engine
The concept of the new compact sports car Toyota S-FR was recently demonstrated at the Tokyo Motor Show. According to the auto magazine Motoring, the production version of the new product will likely have a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine under the hood. The engine will be borrowed from the Auris version for Europe.
The Motoring publication does not specify whether any other power units other than the 1.2-liter will be present in the line-up. The production version of the S-FR will weigh no more than 1000 kg, so this engine produces 114 hp. should be quite enough for the productive work of a sports compact car. Moreover, it can become a worthy competitor to the Mazda MX-5.
Another option for technical equipment of the machine is also possible, provided, however, exclusively for the Japanese market. In this case, the modification will receive a 1.5-liter engine with 129 hp.
According to the Japanese company, the Toyota S-FR will go on sale next year. In the line of sports cars, it will be the youngest, while the Supra will be in first place, and the Toyota 86 will be in second.
