If you cannot find information on the frequency of automatic transmission oil changes for a specific transmission model, you must follow general recommendations.

Most often, an automatic transmission oil change is carried out when the vehicle is operated under normal conditions, after 60-70 thousand kilometers.

It is believed that in older car models (before the year 2000), changing the gearbox oil is required more often - once every 30-40 thousand kilometers during normal operation.

  • The oil is transparent. If the oil is clear, then it does not need to be replaced. In this case, you should not pay attention to the color of the oil. During operation, pink oil may turn black, but the main thing is that it remains transparent;
  • The oil is cloudy. If no white sheet is visible through the oil, it is contaminated with small particles and should be changed. In this situation, the driver can choose a complete or partial oil change;
  • Oil interspersed with shavings. If metal shavings or other particles are clearly visible in the oil sample taken from the box, it means that there will soon be big problems with the transmission. This oil also has a pungent burning smell. Most often, when metal shavings appear, changing the oil will no longer be able to save the automatic transmission from destruction.

How to check the transmission oil level

One of the guarantees for the long service life of an automatic transmission is maintaining the required level of ATF in it.

To keep the transmission in working condition, it is necessary to periodically monitor the oil level, and if it drops, top it up.

If the ATF level in an automatic transmission drops below the permissible level, the following symptoms will appear:

  • when the engine speed changes when the car is stationary, noise will appear in the transmission area;
  • When switching to higher modes, jerks will be noticeable.

A complete replacement of the transmission fluid can be done either at a car service center or with your own hands.

Features of the procedure in the service:

  • produced using modern technological equipment;
  • the change is carried out by pressing using special equipment;
  • the old oil comes out of the box completely under pressure and fresh liquid is poured in, this procedure is carried out using pipes connected to the unit;
  • the ability to visually monitor the process by observing the change in oil color;
  • On average, a complete update will require 10 liters of ATF oil.

Minuses:

  • there is no guarantee of stable operation of the box after such a procedure;
  • washing away useful films on automatic transmission mechanisms.

Stages of the manual procedure:

  1. Warming up the fluid in the box by traveling a distance of 6-10 kilometers. The machine must be placed above the inspection hole or raised on a lift. Be sure to remove the pan.
  2. Unscrew the drain plug, first placing a container to drain the used oil under the hole.
  3. It is necessary to remove the filter and torque converter, drain the remaining liquid from them, clean the filter with gasoline or solvent if it is moderately dirty. If the filter is significantly dirty, it is preferable to replace it.
  4. To speed up the draining of the waste liquid, you need to move the selector to positions from “P” to “D”, and in the reverse order, 2-4 times. Then you need to start the engine and within no more than 60 seconds, repeat the operation.
  5. Reinstall the filter and torque converter.
  6. Install the pan with the obligatory replacement of the gasket.
  7. Using a funnel or large syringe, pour 4-5 liters of working fluid into the oil filler hole.
  8. You need to start the engine and move the selector to positions from “P” to “D”, and in the reverse order, to distribute new oil through the transmission mechanisms.
  9. Check the level and top up if necessary. This procedure is carried out with the engine running. If the level is below the required level, add about a liter. After warming up the engine to operating parameters, repeat the control measurement.

A full-flow oil change in an automatic transmission is quite long - it takes about 1 hour, and costs money if you order this service at a service station. In order to completely drain the old oil, you need to pump fresh oil into the box, which will displace the old oil.

Also, additional oil will be required when replacing the automatic transmission filter. To fully carry out a full-flow oil change, you will need special equipment that will accurately calculate the amount of fresh oil required, as well as calculate the amount of old oil drained.

It is important to know that all flushing is done with the engine idling, that is, you cannot accelerate by increasing engine speed, because this will damage the gearbox.

After approximately 10 minutes of flushing, the unit must be switched to oil change mode. The unit drains the old oil and fluid into a separate canister, and then pours fresh oil into the automatic transmission.
