Review of the Toyota Corolla Levin family of cars

Review of the Toyota Corolla Levin family of cars

The Levin family is represented by comfortable and compact sports coupes, which were developed by the Toyota automaker based on the popular Toyota Corolla line.

This masterpiece of Japanese technology was first presented in 1983 as a model in the back of the AE-84. A total of four generations of these cars were produced, the last one entering production in 1995.

In 1997, this model was restyled, its appearance was improved, and internal components and assemblies were modified in accordance with the requirements of that time.

As a result, the cars began to be equipped with a new six-speed manual transmission, and round fog lights appeared on the bumper.

The latest generation Levin engine - 4A-EF - has been significantly modernized, it has become more economical and powerful.

In 2000, Levin was discontinued.

This is where its story should have ended, but thanks to its excellent technical characteristics and original appearance, even today representatives of the fourth generation of these coupes can be found on the roads.

They have a large number of fans who prefer dynamic and sporty classic cars and aggressive driving styles. For this reason, the 1995-2000 models deserve separate consideration.

Exterior

The latest generation of Levin was produced on a front-wheel drive platform in a two-door coupe body style. The latest generation models retained the streamlined shapes inherent to the family and acquired a new radiator grille design, which had a narrow horizontal slot above the bumper.

For these cars, a massive front bumper was developed with a rectangular air duct in the middle, which added aggressiveness. The front optics were represented by round fog lights and narrow wedge-shaped headlights with orange sections of direction indicators on the sides.

Levin's hood was flat, elongated, with barely pronounced relief lines.

The doors of these models were wide, with handles opening upwards. The rear windows were slightly enlarged compared to previous generations, and there was a small recess along the entire perimeter of the body, which favorably emphasized the contours of the car.

The trunk lid is short, and on its rear edge there is a spoiler in which an additional brake light is mounted. The rectangular taillights are located in a horizontal plane and are lightly tinted.

Overall, the Levin coupe has a fairly modern appearance, and its aggressive shape makes it truly sporty.

Interior

Levin's interior dimensions were as follows: length - 1750 mm; width - 1410 mm; height - 1095 mm. This interior space is worthy of sports cars of the time.

The interior features a massive dashboard, which is covered with a wide visor made in a sporty style. The tachometer is located in the central part of the panel. The center console forms one piece with the instrument panel and is slightly turned towards the driver, which provides greater driving comfort. The steering wheel is three-spoke, with a rim of medium thickness.

The design of the front row seats was comfortable, thanks to lateral and lumbar support. The driver and front passenger did not experience discomfort even on long trips. In more expensive versions of the Levin coupe, Recaro front seats with built-in headrests were installed.

The back row of seats is divided into two seats, which did not offer such comfort - their cushions are a bit short, and the backs are located almost vertically.

dimensions

The main body parameters of Levin cars 1995-2000 were as follows:

  • body type - coupe;
  • number of doors - 2;
  • number of seats - 4;
  • length - 4305 mm;
  • height - 1305 mm;
  • width - 1695 mm;
  • ground clearance - 140 mm;
  • gas tank volume - 50 l;
  • curb weight - 990 kg.

Specifications

Cars of the Levin family were equipped with two types of gasoline engines:

  1. 1.5-liter 5A-FE with a power of 100 hp. With. at 5600 rpm;
  2. 1.6-liter 4A-GE, with a power of 165 hp. With.

Included with these power plants were manual transmissions (five-speed, and since 1997 - six-speed), as well as a four-speed automatic. All models were available only in front-wheel drive.

The front and rear suspensions were shock-absorbing struts with coil springs. Ventilated disc brakes were installed on the front wheel pair; the rear wheel pair was equipped with non-ventilated disc brakes.

Safety system

In 1997, when the GOA body style standards were adopted, the Levin's passive safety measures were significantly enhanced.

Even in standard configurations, two front airbags, an ABC system, and three-point belts with pretensioners and force limiters were installed. Levins also included side reinforcement bars and the ability to attach a child seat.

Thanks to the use of disc brakes on all wheels and an additional brake light, the safety indicators of this car have increased significantly.

Options

In the basic configuration, cars of the Toyota Levin family were equipped with power steering, electric drive of side mirrors and windows, and also, depending on the year of manufacture, air conditioning.

In the more expensive configuration the following additional options were available:

  • Luke;
  • climate control;
  • alloy wheels;
  • rear wiper;
  • vertical adjustment of the steering wheel position;
  • remote key.

In addition to the above, there were other useful functions, thanks to which Levin remains popular with many car enthusiasts to this day, despite the fact that it has long been discontinued.

Toyota Corolla Levin

In 1983, the fifth generation of one of the best-selling Japanese brand expanded to include the two-door coupe "AE85" and the three-door liftback "AE86", which was called Corolla Levin in various markets.

The factory code AE86, which designated this model, had the following meaning: “A” denoted the 4A engine series installed on the car, “E” denoted the Corolla model, “8” denoted the fifth generation of Corolla (E80), and “5” or “6” – the actual body modification of the coupe/liftback.

The first generation of this model was built on a rear-wheel drive platform and was equipped with two gasoline engines of 1.5 and 1.6 liters, which were paired with a 3 or 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission.

This model participated in rally and circuit racing, providing the athletes who piloted it with an advantage not only due to the engine and chassis, but also due to its light weight. By the way, it was this generation that became the inspiration for Toyota who created the new GT86 sports car.

The second generation Corolla Levin (AE91/92) was released in 1987, simultaneously with the launch of the sixth generation of the “parent” Corolla model.

The car was built on the new E90 platform, retained rear-wheel drive, the same coupe and liftback body modifications, but slightly changed in terms of exterior and interior.

The car was equipped with modernized 1.5 and 1.6 liter gasoline engines, which were coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission. This was the last generation Corolla Levin coupe to be sold in the North American market.

The third generation of the model (AE100/101) began rolling off the assembly line in 1991, at the same time that production of the seventh generation Corolla began.

The car received a fully streamlined body, reduced body dimensions and a shortened front-wheel drive E100 platform, moving into the compact coupe/liftback class.

The size of the car's head and rear optics has also decreased. The car was equipped with the same 1.5 and 1.6 liter engines, which, thanks to modernization, became an order of magnitude more powerful. The range of transmissions has received a new addition – a 6-speed manual transmission.

The fourth and last generation of Toyota Corolla Levin (AE 110/111) began rolling off the assembly line in 1995. This generation experienced a facelift in 1997, and was completely discontinued in 2000.

The final generation of Corolla Levin was produced in a single body modification - a two-door coupe, on the front-wheel drive E110/111 platform with a wheelbase of 2465 mm.

The length of the car body was 4305 mm, width – 1695 mm, and height – 1305 mm.

The model has retained the streamlining of the body that has been inherent in it since the third generation, and after the facelift it acquired a new radiator grille with a narrow slot above the bumper.

On the radiator grille there is a triangular nameplate, which the model has worn since the third generation.

The car received a new massive front bumper, which had a central rectangular air duct opening, divided by one wide “rib” horizontally and several thin ones vertically.

The bumper also has large round side sections that house the fog lights. The front optics are narrow, wedge-shaped, with orange sections of turn indicators. The hood is elongated, flat with barely noticeable raised lines.

The side doors are wide, with handles that open upward. There is a narrow recess along the entire perimeter of the body. The rear side windows have slightly increased in size compared to those of the previous generation.

The trunk lid of the Corolla Levin is short, and on its outer edge there is a spoiler with an additional brake light. The taillights are rectangular, located in a horizontal plane, slightly tinted.

The interior of the car features a massive dashboard under a wide visor, with a tachometer located in the center, as befits a production sports car. The center console is combined with the dashboard into a single unit and is slightly oriented towards the driver. The steering wheel is three-spoke, with a medium-thick rim.

The front seats have pronounced lateral and lumbar support (the BZ-R version had Recaro seats with integrated headrests).

The back row was divided into two seats, the cushions of the sofa were short, and the backs were almost vertical.

Toyota Corolla Levin – a car for active people

The Toyota Corolla is a lightweight, small coupe that was introduced in 1983 as part of the last of the fifth generation of rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive passenger cars.

Initial sales of Levin's car were relatively small. This car was famous both in racing competitions and on the streets. Let's look at the characteristics of the car in the Toyota Corolla Levin. It is equipped with a four-cylinder injection engine.

Its maximum power is 130 horsepower. And the torque in standard form is 140 nm. The car is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission.

If you see this car for the first time, it will most likely make a good impression on you, because it has a rather pleasant sporty look.

The presence of features such as automatic transmission, alloy wheels and fog lights makes the Toyota Corolla Levin stand out from other cars. This car has a 1.8-liter engine and sports styling. Due to such a powerful engine, which is additionally lightweight, the rear-wheel drive Toyota Corolla moves uphill quite quickly.

In the land of the rising sun, Toyota Corolla Levin has become very popular because it is characterized as a fairly maneuverable car on mountain roads. Inside, the interior looks rugged. Toyota Corolla is equipped with a huge steering wheel and comfortable seats.

For timely technical inspection and proper operation, it is necessary to use a special manual for repair, operation of the vehicle and its maintenance, which contains a detailed description of all technical work.

How does such a device in its class differ from the best car? If you look at the gearbox, you can see that the car has a slow automatic transmission. At the same time, Toyota has poor tire grip and a stiff suspension.

In general, Toyota Corolla Levin is beyond competition for other cars. You really don't get anything promising for your money other than that high retail price of thirty thousand dollars. If you don’t require much from a car and plan trips with it for shopping or to work, then you may well be satisfied with such a purchase.

If it happens otherwise, you will be disappointed in many respects. If you look at the assembly, you will not find any flaws in quality. This Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 has a good appearance.

The car is equipped with four airbags, anti-lock braking system, electric mirrors, electric windows and manual air control. All instruments on the panel are equipped with backlighting, and there is an additional sunroof on the roof, which annoys the driver and passengers with an increased level of noise from the street.

The high design of the car makes it easy for you to drive. The Toyota Corolla Levin has a relatively modest price, which is characterized by time-tested reliability and quality.

So it’s up to you to decide after considering all the pros and cons.

Why did Alexander Tychinin buy a right-hand drive Toyota Corolla Levin coupe?

The documents have been checked, the contract has been signed, the key is in hand, and I still have difficulty understanding what happened. After all, in the column of the organization that issued the PTS, Vladivostok customs appears: I just became the owner of an 18-year-old right-hand drive Toyota. Am I crazy?

More precisely, not me, but my friend and I. And this was our most real conscious step. For what? For the sake of racing. Two years ago I drove the full season of the amateur championship RHHCC (Russian Hot Hatch Club Championship), where races are held in the time-attack discipline - in other words, for the best lap time.

A dozen stages on different race tracks in Russia, a legal and fairly safe opportunity for fast driving, active recreation. I tried it and got hooked, but, unfortunately, the official Seat Leon FR hatchback had to be handed over to a still existing dealership.

I spent almost a year and a half without racing, went out several times with my colleague Melnikov for winter sprints at the editorial Kalina - and realized that I was bored.

Our Levin inherited an unpresentable, worn-out steering wheel from an older version in the AE101 body, but otherwise the interior is pleasant and comfortable, and the center console is oriented toward the driver in a sporty manner. There is a separate central locking button, automatic driver's window mode and even electric folding mirrors

Most participants in amateur competitions, including me, have long realized that using one car for races and daily use is inconvenient and troublesome.

Either you have a comfortable and soft car under you, which is useless on the track, or vice versa - fast, but harsh and noisy in the city. In addition, if there is a breakdown, you are automatically left without transport.

So we need a separate combat vehicle.

The odometer of this simple but functional device shows the value “261040”. Pay attention to how high the speed the tachometer red zone begins - this motor needs to be turned

It was decided to join forces with my friend Andrey, who from time to time took his ninth Evik to the track, and then plunged headlong into karting.

How did we come to the strange choice of a right-hand drive Toyota? Firstly, we limited our total budget for the purchase of a “racing” car to 300 thousand rubles.

Secondly, I wanted to get into the most competitive class of the RHHCC called Warm-street, in which vehicles with a power of 150-210 “horses” are driven, and one stage gathers over thirty participants. And finally, a potentially fast car was needed.

Winter in the amateur championship, like in football, is the time for paid car transfers between pilots. We were lucky, and two Toyota Corolla Levin models appeared on the horizon. Front-wheel drive, naturally aspirated engine 1.

6 with a power of 165 “horses”, six-speed “mechanics” and differential lock. Moreover, both cars came to the podium in the Warm-street class.

Just what you need! The first Levin was completely ready for the track: a sports steering wheel, a deep bucket with powerful racing belts, a coil suspension, heavy-duty brakes and a disc-locking diff. But, unfortunately, the price of 350 thousand rubles was beyond the budget.

But the second one, in almost standard condition, cost 270 thousand. We took him in February. Among the improvements are only slightly shortened springs and a deeper Recaro civilian seat with tightening belts from TRD.

• A cool Recaro seat with advanced lateral support was installed on Levin as an option.
A slot in the back allows you to easily install sports seat belts - an indispensable thing on the track • You get pleasure from the precise engagement of the six-speed manual transmission. And I replaced the rough lever handle, inherited from the previous owner, with a nice iron ball with rubber inserts

It's funny. I’ve already forgotten what an old car is since I sold the VAZ “Six” that I drove in my student years. But in order for him not to be capricious, care and attention are required. After spending a couple of months in the parking lot, in April the Levin refused to start.

I bought wires, lit it from my Cruze, drove around a bit, but the next day it was the same story again. The battery died. It is here, by the way, not simple, but compact, Japanese style with thin terminals. I had to look for a new battery of the same format, but the price turned out to be the usual - 3,700 rubles.

Then I changed the wiper blades, lubricated the slightly sticking throttle cable, and even rebuilt the washer motor myself, adapting brushes from the Tolyatti generator to it. And at the service center they repaired the cigarette lighter and did the wheel alignment - of course, not without incident.

The bolts on the McPherson struts at the front were unscrewed only after thorough heating with a torch. I also bought ATF fluid because the steering rack is leaking a little. And all this - in addition to ordinary oil changes and front pads.

Since the car will mainly live on the track, a high-temperature 5W-50 oil was chosen, and, of course, sports brake fluid. How are we not tired of this fuss?

Do you remember how poorly the heater regulator worked on VAZ “eights” and “nines”? Forget it, because in Levin he is perfect. And almost the same digital watches are still installed on modern Toyotas

The thing is that Levin turned out to be good. Comfortable seating position, good brakes, razor-sharp fuel response, pleasant handling and a cool manual shift mechanism. Of course, the steering response is a little sluggish - far from modern hot hatches - but what pure zero, what effort!

As a result, in order to register the car and prepare it for track days, we had to spend almost another 35 thousand rubles. And this does not include the purchase of new tires. Therefore, it is not surprising that we missed the first two stages: in Grozny and Smolensk.

On cars for the Japanese market, the lights and turn indicators are controlled by the right steering column lever, so for the first few days, out of habit, you turn on the wipers

Our motorsport with Andrey is extremely budget-friendly. Before the debut combat ride of the season, which we planned to carry out in Myachkovo, a teammate from the TRTeam (Toyota Racing Team) gave us four bald Hankook Ventus R-S3 tires of size 225/45 R15. Why Hankook? Apart from slicks, this is perhaps the fastest track tire in this rare size.

By the way, Myachkova track days are not a cheap pleasure. Two races of several laps cost 3,000 rubles, however, as the number of attempts increases, the race track makes discounts. For example, six races are already valued at 6,000 rubles.

Features of the 4A-GE engine include individual throttle valves for each cylinder, 20 valves and a phase shifter on the intake camshaft. Volume - 1.6 liters, power - 165 hp.

The day before the third stage of the RHHCC, it started to rain during training in Myachkovo, so we installed another, more recent, Hankook on the front axle, borrowed from Maxim Bronin, a former champion in the “junior” City-light class and part-time team guru and Levin specialist . And at the rear we decided to leave the usual city tires Bridgestone RE001 205/50 R15, which we got with the car. I was hoping that a more civil and, most importantly, non-erased tread pattern would add grip to the stern.

Not so! As soon as you jerk the steering wheel a little sharper at the entrance to a turn or barely cover the gas on an arc, the Levin begins to actively sweep its tail, just like a rear-wheel drive one. Just have time to catch it. Fun, but ineffective.

In the factory version of the rear suspension (pictured), only the toe-in is adjusted, but if you replace the fixed transverse link with an adjustable one, you can also change the camber

However, a couple of test laps and my face breaks into a smile. We were scared about the oil overheating and the fact that we would have to install an additional radiator for it, but Levin survived all six rain sessions with a bang. The peppy 20-valve 4A-GE engine on throttles, called BlackTop, happily spins to almost 8000 rpm.

And, by the way, this is one of the most highly accelerated small-displacement aspirated cars in the world. I’m also surprised at how well the standard worm-type differential lock works, despite its age—you can “open” very early. Just don’t think that our Levin, which has already traveled almost three hundred thousand kilometers, still has the factory engine.

 Of course, it is under contract, and rebuilt by the former owner.

Almost slick! Even such worn Hankook R-S3 tires hold up better on the wet track in Myachkovo than civilian Bridgestone Potenza RE001 with fresh tread

The brakes are with ABS, but the efficiency of the standard mechanisms with two pistons and a floating caliper is sometimes not enough

Is it easy to change gears with your left hand? The scheme, by the way, is the same as on conventional left-hand drive cars. It turned out that after a couple of days behind the wheel this does not pose any problems, but it is more difficult to switch to the “inverted” arrangement of the steering column levers: turn signals and lights on Japanese cars for the home market are turned on on the right.

Warm-street class podium: third place - Georgy Romanov, second - Tigran Gasparyan (Mini JCW GP), and at the top - RHHCC veteran Nikolay Vikhansky (Subaru BRZ)

It is prohibited for two pilots to participate in one car in one stage, so they decided that Andrey would go to Myachkovo. The entry fee is 6,000 rubles. Registration was completed, sponsorship stickers were received - and our Levin stood frozen in the pit lane, waiting for the green light. Andrey's time in the first attempt is 2:05.1.

And the leaders... They are not just beyond the horizon, they are in space. Right off the bat, the experienced Nikolai Vikhansky showed 1.56.2 in the evil Subaru BRZ, and the fastest Toyota driver Georgy Romanov showed 1.57.7 in the Corolla hatchback. True, they already have more than three seasons in amateur motorsport behind them, and for us the main task is to get used to the new car.

As a result, Andrey managed to improve only to 2.03.0. It was possible to shoot for a couple more seconds, but the rain intervened again. The result is only 19th place in a class of 30 participants. Not a lot even for the first time, and Andrey is well familiar with Myachkovo’s configuration, and in karting he rides at the level of regulars at the top MIKC championship.

This shows how far karting really is from touring motorsport and, of course, confirms the need for rolling.

But we are happy with the purchase. Levin is reliable, cheap to maintain and, most importantly, drives provocatively. Is he fast? We will be able to answer this question only at the end of the season, after we “roll in” and, perhaps, make some technical changes to the car.

Old Toyotas are a popular vehicle in the RHHCC championship. In the foreground is the fast combat Corolla of Georgy Romanov with a helical suspension, disc locking and more powerful brakes. In Myachkovo he took third place in the Warm-street class, completing a lap in 1.57.287

One of the fastest cars in the Warm-street class is Nikolai Vikhansky’s seriously modified Subaru BRZ. Lap time in Myachkovo - 1.55.306

Meanwhile, I was already preparing in full for the next stage, because I had to go to one of the most interesting and technical Russian tracks - the Nizhny Novgorod Ring. This trip was more successful and allowed us to draw interesting conclusions. Which? I'll tell you more.

Toyota Levin 2017 – Corrola from GAC-Toyota for China

New Toyota models for 2017-2018 have been replenished with the updated Toyota Levin sedan, presented as part of the April Shanghai Auto Show.

In our review of the restyled version of the Toyota Corolla Levin with photos, price, trim levels and technical characteristics of the four-door sedan from the Chinese manufacturer Guangzhou Auto Corporation (GAC-Toyota).

The new product is intended for sale exclusively in the Chinese automobile market and is equipped with gasoline engines – 1.2 Turbo (116 hp) and naturally aspirated 1.8-liter (140 hp). The price of Toyota Levin 2017 in China is 120,000-160,000 yuan (1,005-1,340 thousand rubles).

I would like to immediately note that Toyota Levin is one of two versions of the 11th generation Toyota Corolla for the Chinese market.

The Toyota Levin sedan is produced at the GAC-Toyota joint venture in Guangzhou (based on the Toyota Corolla sedan for the American market).

But the Toyota Corolla sedan, produced through the efforts of the FAW-Toyota company, comes from the European version of the Toyota Corolla.

Toyota Levin, by the way, has been offered in the Middle Kingdom since the summer of 2014. And now, almost three years later, the sedan has undergone a planned restyling, the main asset of which can safely be considered the appearance of a turbocharged gasoline 1.2-liter D-4T engine (model 9NR-FTS).

In China, the new product is called Toyota Levin 185T (the numbers indicate the maximum torque of the turbocharged engine). This engine is also installed under the hood of the Toyota Auris hatchback and Toyota Auris Touring Sports station wagon.

Let's return to the engine in the technical characteristics section, and first we will evaluate the body design and interior design of the Levin sedan.

The car body looks dynamic, sporty and exciting.

There are narrowed headlights with graceful curves of LED daytime running lights, a narrow slot in the false radiator grille, a huge mouth of the air intake located on a powerful bumper, complemented by round fog lights and a lot of chrome parts.

From the side, the body of the Toyota Levin does not look as harmonious as the five-door Auris hatchback. What especially spoils the picture are the small 15-inch wheels with the bland design of alloy wheels.

The creators of the Japanese sedan were a great success for the Japanese sedan for the Chinese consumer: large and solid side lamps with LED filling, a neat trunk lid decorated with a wide chrome insert, a solid bumper with curvaceous shapes.

  • The external overall dimensions of the 2017-2018 Toyota Levin body are 4630 mm long, 1775 mm wide, 1485 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2700 mm.
  • As standard, the sedan is equipped with 15-inch wheels with 195/65 R15 tires; larger 16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16 tires are available as an option (standardly installed on a sedan with a 1.8-liter engine).

The interior of the Toyota Levin was inherited from the American version of the 11th generation Toyota Corolla.

Moreover, its most budget option with an old-fashioned instrument panel (three radii, a miniature on-board computer screen) and an archaic air conditioning control unit.

However, the center console boasts the latest Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with an 8-inch color touchscreen (Bluetooth, navigation, Baidu CarLife).

The cozy interior comfortably accommodates the driver and four passengers. The front seats, despite their apparent simplicity, are very comfortable (anatomical backrest profile, solid lateral support). The luggage compartment can accommodate about 450 liters of luggage. If desired, it is possible to significantly increase the useful volume of the luggage compartment by folding the split backrest of the rear row of seats.

Already in the basic configuration, the Toyota Levin sedan is equipped with front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, ABS with BA and EBD, VSC and TRC, the HAC system (hill start assistant), a keyless entry system and an engine activation button, air conditioning , standard audio system (radio, CD, MP3, WMA, AUX and USB ports) with 4 speakers, two 12 V sockets, power windows and power mirrors.

As the equipment level increases, leather seat trim, climate control, a modern multimedia system with an 8-inch display, side curtain airbags in the first and second rows, rear parking sensors, an electric sunroof, a multifunction steering wheel, and electric front seats will be added.

Technical characteristics of Toyota Levin 2017-2018. Under the hood of the updated Toyota Levin sedan, a choice of two gasoline four-cylinder engines are installed. 1.2-liter turbocharged (116 hp 185 Nm) paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or CVT, content with only 5.5-5.6 liters of fuel in mixed driving mode.

1.8-liter naturally aspirated (140 hp 173 Nm) exclusively with CVT.
