The new Rafik is one of the most important and high-profile premieres of the auto show, which opens today in New York.
In the US market, sales of the RAV4 are second only to the trio of full-size pickups (408 thousand vehicles were sold last year), and in Russia it is the most expensive car in the top ten bestsellers.
It is all the more interesting to trace the evolution of the crossover, because in the fifth generation it completely changed its image.
The contours of the body have become stricter and more solid, the aggressive expression of the face with a wide grille contrasts with the previous design.
But when viewed from the side and from behind, the new RAV4 gives rise to strong associations with Jeep cars, especially with the current Cherokee: the same angular wheel arches, “sagging” window sill line, rear roof pillars inclined forward, lights... But now Toyota will have a more “off-road” spirit.
The new crossover has moved to the modular TNGA K platform, although the chassis configuration has not changed fundamentally: McPherson struts at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear. Ground clearance has increased by 13 mm, the track has become wider, and the body overhangs have become smaller. Body torsional rigidity increased by 57%.
Compared to the outgoing generation, the wheelbase is stretched by 30 mm (up to 2690 mm), but the dimensions have changed slightly: the crossover has become 5 mm longer (4595 mm), 10 mm wider (1854 mm) and 5 mm lower (1699 mm ). The maximum wheel size is now 19 inches (versus 18 for the previous generation).
The interior design has also become stricter and more solid: there is no more flirting with the asymmetry of the front panel and the full-width “shelf”, although the open niche above the glove box has been preserved.
The instrument cluster now has a large display on which the speedometer is depicted, and the central place in the cabin is occupied by the protruding display of the Entune 3 media system.

The RAV4 for the American market will have a wealth of standard equipment: a rear view camera, an electric handbrake and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 complex, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic braking systems, lane marking monitoring and road sign recognition.
Options include an electric driver's seat, ventilated front seats, a heated rear row, a panoramic roof, an electric trunk activated by a wave of the foot under the bumper, a JBL audio system with eleven speakers, as well as an interior mirror that can be switched to a display mode with an image from a camera in the stern (like Cadillac cars).
There will also be two special versions in the range. The XSE has a sporty decorative feel, supported by two-tone exterior paint and revised suspension tuning. And the “off-road” version of the Adventure is distinguished by a different bumper design, larger linings on the wheel arches and massive roof rails.
Two power units have been prepared for the American market, and they are almost the same as the local Camry. The standard naturally aspirated 2.5 engine of the new long-stroke Dynamic Force family is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the Camry, this engine produces 206 hp.
, but Rafik’s indicator has not yet been announced. The alternative is a hybrid installation, which includes the same 2.5 engine, an electromechanical variator and a separate electric motor for driving the rear wheels, which has become 30% more powerful than before.
In other markets there will probably be a two-liter engine.
There is a surprise regarding the transmission. The basic RAV4, as before, has front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive with a rear axle clutch is offered for an additional fee.
But the expensive versions will sport the Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD transmission, which Toyota is introducing for the first time.
The rear wheels have individual multi-plate clutches, thanks to which traction vector control is implemented, and in addition, simple cam clutches are installed on both ends of the driveshaft, which completely disable it, for example, when driving on the highway.
The new crossover also has an electronic Multi-Terrain Select system, which changes the settings of the traction control electronics depending on the selected type of surface under the wheels. In short, the RAV4 should drive more confidently than its predecessor off the asphalt.

But buyers will not be able to check this soon. Even in the United States, the start of sales is scheduled for December this year, and hybrid versions will appear at dealers in 2019. Around the same time, the RAV4 will appear in Europe.

Professionals from the Calty studio (California) worked on the overall appearance, and European designers from ED2 were involved in the interior design.

This decision is more of a tribute to fashion, but the designers assure that the screen rising on the front panel does not at all interfere with the view from the driver’s seat.

The interior captivates both with its design solutions and the quality of the materials used in the decoration: soft plastics are used, and in more expensive versions there is a leather insert on the front panel.

Toyota does not require proof of its quality or style. Especially when we are talking about the powerful crossover RAV 4. The car appeared on the world market two decades ago, has gone through four restylings and confidently holds its position to this day. The Japanese model is incredibly popular in Russia, so the logical question is: where is Toyota RAV 4 assembled ?
The Japanese manufacturer has 52 factories around the world: in Mexico, Brazil, Great Britain, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, as well as Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Kenya, and Vietnam. Most foreign enterprises are in China.
But not all countries where Toyota cars are assembled produce the RAV 4 (“Recreational Activity Vehicle, 4-wheel drive,” which translated means “vehicle for active recreation, all-wheel drive”). And everything would be fine, but the lion’s share of the horses disappears in the depths of the automatic transmission. The car is downright slow.
I liked the less powerful two-liter engine (146 hp) and the mechanics much more. This car has excellent elasticity and acceleration dynamics. And the box works very well. They will also offer a variator, but it was not possible to drive such a modification.
What's the result? RAV4 #8212 is not a bad city crossover, with an interesting appearance and budget solutions in the interior. The automatic version is likely to be in greatest demand. But it is suitable only for those who are not used to rushing. I will give preference to a more affordable two-liter unit with a manual transmission. He's much more interesting.
The price of the new product is not small (starts from 998,000 rubles for the version with a 2.0-liter front-wheel drive engine and manual transmission). And there is hardly any reserve for reducing it. The car is assembled in Japan, where labor is expensive. Plus the traditional interest in RAV4 in Russia.
