How to choose a used car

How to choose the right used car. Chapter 2. — DRIVE2

So, you have learned how to use a car website and have chosen a car. If you haven't read it yet, here it is: ABOUT AUTO.RU

You made a certain selection of cars, selected a few and got ready to watch.

The main thing before leaving is to study the model before inspection. Where the car is made, Where the VIN number is located on the supporting part of the body (on the supporting part, and not under the glass and on the sticker), restylings, in what year they were.

All this will help you save money or bargain if the owner was lying and is trying to sell you a pre-restyling at the price of a restyling. This will also help you even visually determine what year the car is in front of you. A year is a price.

Approximately, for the year of issue you can lose or add up to 10%! And remember - the year is not the year the car has been in use. The year of manufacture is a number on the PTS and in all documents.

I won’t tell you how to identify car parks with resellers based on advertisements, because they are encrypted under ordinary sellers. I really hope you are reasonable people and have weeded out all the magical offers.

How to identify resellers and not waste time is not a simple question. They learned how to encrypt correctly. Therefore there is no general rule. Just chat with the seller.

If he is not personally selling it, most likely it is criminals. Just logic will help you.

You have come for an inspection.

I don’t recommend traveling with money right away, for obvious and logical reasons. Advertisement and reality are most often different things. Your desire to grab the first car you come across and get it over with quickly only plays into the hands of the seller. Not to you. He will feel that the money is in his pocket and will sell it to you without haggling. Or worse.

It’s better to immediately tune in to two approaches. The brain will not be clouded, the money will not “burn your pocket.” Take an advance payment, say, 5,000 rubles. There are no rules about prepayment, your five will do just fine.

Always remember an important rule. If not this car, then in any case it will be similar. And often much better than this.

Don't grab the first one you come across.

Next, you saw... A parking lot. And the nice girl, who said that she is the owner, asks to wait for some friend, husband, or anyone else, and go to another location.

Run now! More precisely, say goodbye and go look at another car. These are resellers. You will never buy anything good there. Don't repeat the thousands of mistakes that other unfortunate people have already made.

Well, finally you have found an ordinary seller, shook hands, and he is ready to show you the object of your desires, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa same time-sales-dealer, however, it’s time to say they’re looking for a car. As Leonid Arkadyevich said.

You shouldn’t immediately rush to it, start it, and jump around with a tambourine. Control yourself, because it’s like poker. An experienced seller will see your joy and will not give you a penny, because you are already satisfied with everything.

Keep your cool, but don't turn into an uptight rude person.

I have a car, great. You shouldn’t fall in love with it and try it on yourself without checking the documents. Start with them.

Verification of documents. Pick up the PTS (that blue paper, A4 sheet) and look carefully. Watermarks, embossing, everything is like money. Ideally, it should not be a duplicate. That is, it must be issued by customs.

This is if the car is driven and sold by a car dealership. If the car was driven by an individual, his last name will be in the column. But it was issued by customs! If issued by the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, the PTS is a duplicate. Even if there is no additional mark.

I’ll tell you later what this entails.

There may be another option if the car is made in Russia. Then it will be issued by a factory or some other organization. But not the traffic police! This is the main thing.

If the PTS is a duplicate, you shouldn’t be too scared. Perhaps the original was lost... But there are other options.

For example, the car was involved in some kind of credit fraud, or there were so many owners that all the fields were missing... Or even this is a second copy. In any case, at your own peril and risk.

But if you take a car with a duplicate, remember - its price should be lower than with the original title. That is, you can throw off 10,000 rubles just for this!

I won’t write about the correctness of filling out and Russian laws for re-registration of transport, the entire Internet is replete with this. Just prepare, study. No need to ask the seller this.

I also don’t write about a passport. You must understand that they must present it to you so that you can verify whether it is the owner or who you don’t know! Check it out and don't be shy.

More about legal review later. Remember - we don’t immediately grab the car! We took a prepayment with us. A legal We’ll do the check calmly, at home. After we choose a car. I'll tell you how.

Well, we checked everything. The documents are in order, the owner is in front of us. Stands, smiles and longs for communication. Heading to the car? Yes, but again calmly. Let's start examining the outside. As for the owner, who is very often talkative, I do not advise you to enter into discussions.

Nod politely and that's it. He speaks to you with his teeth. Especially to take your eyes off the “jambs”, or simply out of the kindness of your heart... In any case, it will only distract! After my article, you are prepared! We don't pay attention to him.

But politely! (otherwise you will say later that I made boors out of you).

Engine compartment.
I advise you to start with the hood. More precisely, from the engine compartment. And bring a flashlight!

Yes, one more thing. If the car is dirty, ask to wash it. If he refuses... Well then, at your own peril and risk. Any body defect can be hidden under the dirt... I would turn around and say goodbye.

So, you looked under the hood and what did you find there? Look for the VIN number. It is either there, or in the cabin, or in the trunk (rarely), or not at all, if it is American or right-hand drive (research the question). We checked the VIN number with the vehicle title.

A small note. If the car is frame (and you should know this in advance), look for the frame number. It must be readable and must be clean. Ask the owner to wipe it off. Don't touch it yourself if you don't want to be blamed later. If the number is not readable, you will not register such a car, no matter how perfect it looks!

Further. We visually inspect the engine and look for smudges or leaks. We are also looking for handprints, leaks of sealant at the joints of the motor, and other things that could indicate a problem.

Naturally, all this is easy to notice if the engine is dirty, as it should ideally be. If it is perfectly clean, as if it just came from a car wash... Well, maybe the owner is such a neat guy... From experience, there are only a few of them.

And most often, they are trying to hide something from you. I would turn around and leave. You shouldn't buy such a car.

After inspecting the units, you are satisfied with their appearance (fogging on the engine from oil is not a reason to worry. Many cars sweat a little. This does not mean that a quick repair is in danger.

But this means you can bargain for an extra penny! Remember this joint and don’t say it right away), let’s start inspecting the body under the hood. The spars must be the same color on both sides. Welding seams must be perfectly smooth, identical on both sides, without signs of deformation or straightening.

The spar is the load-bearing part of the body. If it was repaired, it's not a car... It's junk. Turn around and look for another one.

Next, look at the fastenings of the hood and fenders. It must be painted, not torn off and in its place. It's like they screwed it up and then painted it. Yes, that’s exactly how it was at the factory! But in Yusuf’s workshop, when they were changing and painting the hood, it was torn off. The paint has peeled off. Tightened it a little offset.

What does it mean? This means that the part is not just painted, it has also been replaced. That is, there was an accident. What kind of paint, of what severity (well, if the side members are not affected, it’s probably okay), and how Yusuf or the official dealer, who is often no different from Yusuf, painted it is unknown.

Perhaps your age is passing, or perhaps it will peel off in a month. Think for yourself. But the fact that this is a reason for bargaining is for sure! Be sure to draw the owner’s attention with the question: “Do you know that the hood was removed? Look, the fasteners have been torn off.” Do not enter into further discussion, do not argue or offend him.

Perhaps he didn't even know! You have done your job and raised some doubts.

After inspecting the engine compartment, move on to the body.

Body inspection.
Go smoothly from the left front fender and end with the right front. Then you won't miss anything.

The wing must be smooth, without dents, without smudges of paint or varnish, the shagreen markings must be the same on all parts. Ideally. If it is painted and you find traces, it happens. Make sure the coloring is of good quality. And again, pay attention to the seller. This is another reason!

Inspect the pillars and roof. These parts should not be painted. These are also load-bearing parts, and the roof is a very weakly vulnerable element. If it was damaged, most likely it is not some small thing. Better look for another car.

Doors can be painted. Alas, this is difficult to avoid when operating a car in Moscow. Look at the color quality. By the way, there are a couple more ways to determine the color without a thickness gauge - traces of paint on rubber bands, torn rubber bands, broken disposable fasteners... In general, be careful.

You can also notice paint transitions. Visible and non-visible parts of the part (inside doors, openings, etc.). Transitions are most often made at the junctions of visible and invisible parts. And don’t think that all this is not noticeable! The main thing is to know what you are looking for.

No one will ever paint it like at the factory! Painted and unpainted parts are immediately visible, especially if they are located next to each other.

paint transition

Luggage compartment.
Having reached the trunk, also inspect it from the inside, for the presence of welds and sloppy repairs. Move away the rubber seal. Inspect the hinge mounting bolts.

But don't rush to close!

Ask the owner to raise the floor and show you the spare tire (if appropriate). It is there that the accident in the rear is most often hidden... No one bothers with straightening and welds there. Well, in the end - see if there is a spare tire and a jack! No - a reason for bargaining. All this trifle costs more than 10,000 rubles if it is a foreign car.

After going through the entire car and reaching the hood again, pay extra attention to the wheels. Make another circle around the car, don't be lazy. Maybe you'll notice something else.

Wheels. The wheels should be visually straight, if you can see the pads and brake discs - the former should not be worn to zero, the latter should not be purple or jagged. Otherwise you will end up having to replace your brakes. Either bargain or refuse the purchase.

The wheels themselves must be the same, as well as the tires on them. That is, one brand. Naturally, everything depends on the purchase budget, and sometimes the wheels are barely alive. It's up to you to decide. The main thing is not to miss this moment so that it does not come as a surprise later.

Well, now we dive into the salon. Naturally, first ask the owner. What if his mother-in-law’s corpse is not removed there...

Salon.
Let's start under the hood. Door fasteners, seams, paint transitions.

How many parts are allowed to be painted... Yes, there are no canons here. It's up to you to decide. Sometimes the whole car is painted, with high quality and with soul, to update it... And sometimes one part is painted in such a way that it would be better not to paint it... See for yourself. The main thing is that there are no serious accidents, that is, the load-bearing elements are not affected or deformed. This is the kind of car I wouldn’t recommend to anyone to buy.

Well, everything is simple in the cabin. Deformation or replacement of interior elements where the airbags are hidden is immediately visible. The worn steering wheel, driver's seat and pedals should be approximately consistent with the mileage. Although the point is also controversial.

Make sure there are no burnt holes in the seats, ceiling or panels. I personally don’t feel comfortable in the salon after a smoker. You - see for yourself. But the reason for bargaining is clear. Cleanliness in the cabin is also not critical. You can clean everything dry.

But how much will it cost? Decide for yourself.

Check your mileage and ask for the key to turn on the ignition. Do not close the door so as not to irritate the seller. You are just as much a stranger to him, and he is nervous. Remember this and respect it! If the seller sees you as a good and cultured person, further communication will be much easier! Perhaps he will even tell you some of the secrets of this machine...

Turn on the ignition without starting the car. ALL warning lamps should light up and go out, except for oil pressure and those lamps that go out after the car starts.

You may not recognize these lights, but two should light up. This is Check Engine and Air Run (of course, if appropriate)

If the lamps do not light up, it means they are not working. And believe me, this is most likely not due to the light bulb itself.

It’s just that someone wants from you a simple way to hide an engine or electrical error, or the lack of airbags, if they should be there.

I don’t recommend you buy such a car without serious diagnostics. Although, sometimes a trifle is often hidden behind the CHECK ENJ. Again, then they wouldn’t have jammed him...

Well, after everything written above, if you are satisfied with everything, you should not immediately shake hands and run to register the car (although where should you run? Now you can arrange everything on the spot).

Test Drive.
Ask the owner to take you for a ride. And it is desirable that the route of this test drive contain: a high-speed section, pits, a turn where you can turn on the reverse gear. You will find it all! Just point your finger. If they don’t hide anything from you, they will give you a ride as you wish.

What should you hear on the go? Well, first of all, after the owner starts the car, look at what comes out of the exhaust pipe. Normal exhaust or blue smoke? Blue smoke is the end of the engine. Well, do you know what I mean?))) The main thing is to remember this! Even I sometimes forgot this banal gesture... Although I sometimes looked at 20 cars a day.

But on the go, use your ears. Ask politely to turn off the luxurious radio, and listen. Everything should work smoothly, without grinding, clanging or jerking. Engine, gearbox, brakes. The headlights should be on, the stove should be heated, the air conditioning should be cooled, and the windshield wipers should be cleaned. There should be no knocks or clangs in the suspension, and there should be no vibrations during quiet driving.

If you have discovered something, and do not have the education and talents of a mechanic, do not rush to call your friends or the service center and tell the owner about it. I’m sure he will convince you that this is a trifle, and everything will go away on its own! Or he has been traveling with this for many years, and you pass by. Get out of the car and only then call. Describe everything as clearly as possible, and then decide - do you need such a car?

Well, we are slowly approaching the finale!

Bargaining and price approval.
All. You are satisfied with the car, you have allocated a few insignificant “shoals” for bargaining and are ready to start it.

Praise the car, say that it is very good and well-maintained. But there are still several points that you have identified together with the owner. Let him agree with you. Well, then, ask him to name the final price for which you will take this swallow. Just ask! There is no need to tell you any numbers personally!

Believe me, anything can happen here! To the point that the owner turns out to be absent-minded and accidentally blurts out much lower than he even put in the advertisement. But don't agree right away. Remind him of the problems and tell him approximately how much they will cost you in service.

But don't overdo it. There have been cases when the owners were offended and categorically refused to sell to you personally... Anything can happen. Common sense should always be present!

Leave a deposit and go home to get the money. Don’t bother with an agreement or some kind of receipt... Although, it’s at your discretion. Having previously issued or photographed your passport, PTS and car registration certificate from all sides.

This is what will help you understand whether everything is so beautiful from the legal side, or whether your future car is under arrest, pledged, or even worse. I think I need to write an additional note about the legal check... Or just stop by the traffic police post.

Although not very willingly, they will help you.

I really hope I was able to help you. Good luck with your purchase. I understand that this is not all. There are still delicate moments of transferring money, etc., there are other nuances.

But knowing at least this, a huge percentage of scammers and simple liars will not make money on you and will not “sell” you their substandard goods.

If you still cannot heed my advice, or you think that all this is great, but still... Contact me! For a small fee, I will demonstrate the masterclass to you personally!) Well, if you are in Moscow or in the region, of course.

8 tips when buying a car second-hand

There are rumors that very soon a law will come into force prohibiting the transfer of a car in the old proven way from hand to hand, now only through car dealerships. As they say, everything is for the people.

But until this law comes into force (we hope it never does), let's look at the main nuances that you need to pay attention to when buying a used four-wheeled friend. After all, not everything they sell is suitable for driving.

We want you to ride comfortably, so pay attention and remember.

1. Check your documents carefully

From the very beginning, you need to sort out the documents for the car. To avoid wasting time, find out whether the car has customs clearance and whether there is any serious damage. A car owner who does not intend to use fraudulent schemes will tell the truth, thereby saving himself and you a lot of time.

You can also pre-request the VIN code of a used car to check it through electronic databases for problems. It wouldn’t hurt to contact the traffic police and find out if the car is wanted, otherwise you never know. Check your car for fines, arrests, and search.

It doesn’t hurt to find out if there is any unpaid loan hanging on the car. When selling, you must be provided with the original PTS. There you can study the “pedigree” of the car for its past owners. If the car was changed too often, it’s probably for a reason, but because it’s a little worse than a scooter.

If there is a mark “replacement of lost”, then this is a very big reason to be wary. Unfortunately, there are situations when the owner receives a duplicate title for a car that is pledged (usually when buying a car on credit, when it is a guarantor of money back).

However, if the seller makes a face in a grimace of disbelief, this does not mean that he is unclean. Would you give the car VIN to the first person you meet? What if you are a swindler?

2. Pay attention to the seller’s behavior

If the seller behaves strangely, is rude, insolent and tries to put pressure on you, this can mean two things: either he is a jerk, or there is something wrong with the car.

A normal seller will help you inspect the car and will talk for a long time and carefully about how he calmly drove his swallow to Koktebel to visit his mother-in-law, got out of the swamp, and the like. And if he behaves indecently and makes you want to break your nose, then he is either a swindler or a reseller.

Both of them dream of getting rid of their problematic car as quickly as possible.
By the way, never buy a car by proxy. What if the true owner of the car doesn’t know that his car is being sold.

The situation on the market is such that the best cars go straight to resellers. It’s good that there are services that are interested in ensuring that the “cream” of the secondary car market goes to ordinary car enthusiasts, like you and me. the AV100 enjoys great prestige in the market . On it, the search for cars fits into seconds, and most importantly, there is a chance to check the seller by phone, in case he is a reseller. In order not to stumble upon a problematic “swallow”, they have a telegram bot AVinfoBot for express checking a phone or license plate number and a special extension for Chrome that shows how a specific ad has changed (price dynamics, placement period) and what other ads have been published since this phone number. You don’t have to hang out on their website for days, because thanks to notifications via SMS, Email, Telegram, notifications about new candidates for your car will arrive instantly.

Another argument in favor of this service is that resellers themselves actively use it.

3. A good car won't cost too much

Think about this. Why is a car in excellent condition, according to the seller, so cheap? He will tell you that he is selling for family reasons, because he urgently needs money and the like.

But listen, in order to urgently sell a used car in a large city, it is enough to lower its value by 10-15% below the market value, but not 2-5 times. Only scammers let things down that much.

Most likely, the car has a dark, criminal past.

4. Pay attention to the mileage indicator

Ideally, the annual mileage is 6–15 thousand kilometers. So, if they push you a ten-year-old Skoda with a mileage of 10 thousand, then most likely the wizards from the neighboring car service did a great job on the indicators. Ideally, it should be from 60 to 150 thousand.

You can believe the stories that no one used the car, it was in the garage for 5 years - well, why do you need such a car. The main rule is that doubts will turn into hemorrhoids, don’t forget it.

By the way, if the indicators are off the charts, then it is possible that the car was used, as they say, both in its tail and in its mane. For example, in a taxi.

Nowadays people are looking for a car mainly via the Internet. There are, of course, conservative titans who even buy a chest of drawers through “From Hand to Hand,” but the progressive world prefers to do it online. A bunch of portals have appeared on which searching for a car is an extremely painful task.

The design is such that your eyes bleed out, the search for cars lasts for hours, and the offers are not so great. Therefore, you need to turn to sites such as Moskva.avtopoisk.ru, created so that everyone can buy a used car without unnecessary hassle. The site is pleasant to navigate and very easy to find what you need.

Every little detail seemed to be created in order to speed up and facilitate the not-so-fun process of finding a car.

5. Pay due attention to technical inspection

Technical control is a litmus test that can reveal all the shortcomings of a car. You must examine it from all sides, examine all the cracks from below and above.

Everything should be even, all gaps should be the same. By the way, if you shine a flashlight on the body, the repaired parts will reflect the light in a special way.

And if you stand up and look at the car from the trunk, the entire curvature will instantly become visible.

Roughness and color changes, too bright gloss - repainted. A normal driver admits that the car is damaged, but this does not mean that it was repaired normally. What if the guests of the capital simply covered their sides with a thick layer of putty? Then take a magnet and apply it to the broken part.

If it was repaired by hand, the magnet will no longer be needed.
Inspecting the wheels can reveal a lot - if the car has previously been in a serious accident that deformed its body, the tires will wear unevenly. Pay attention to the doors.

They should close with a similar sound and force.

6. Test drive is mandatory

As for the test drive, remember: the engine should start easily, without grinding or other extraneous sounds. Without moving, press the gas several times, greatly increasing the speed.

If there is a sudden change in the crankshaft speed, you can hear knocking sounds, which indicate that a major overhaul is imminent.

While driving, try to accelerate and stop sharply - a used car should not jerk or stall in real situations that often occur on the road.

7. Check for corrosion

Some cars shouldn't be in our world. They must remain in the kingdom of Neptune, where, apparently, chance sent them.

It is not difficult to recognize such a car; one of its signs is doors that open with difficulty. And if the body is treated poorly, the sills are the first to begin to rust.

By running your hand in a light-colored glove along the lower part of the threshold, hidden from human eyes, you can find signs of corrosion.

8. Don’t be shy about bargaining and don’t neglect some formalities

Well, now to the minor formalities.
If you like everything, move on to trading. Don’t be shy about lowering the price, but you also don’t need to be impudent. Once you reach an agreement on the price, you can also decide with the owner what he will leave from the additional set. After this, you can set the date and place of the transaction. The deposit can be good, but small.

And if the owner himself requires a deposit, ask him to write a standard financial receipt. The deposit size should not be 1/5 or even 1/20 of the cost of the car. If they demand that kind of money from you, it is better to refuse the deal.

And don’t forget to ask the seller for all the secondary documentation for the car, keep the DCT and transfer certificates, you may need them in the future.

We understand that even despite our elegantly written advice, you will have doubts and uncertainty. If you don’t believe us, then turn to professionals. You can go to a neighbor who has been driving for 50 years and claims to know all the intricacies, or you can go to normal professionals. For example, from “Autotrust”. Specialists will help you accurately diagnose the car and find the dark sides of a “car in excellent condition.” Simply put, they will help save both your nerves and your money. You will still need them for investing in a car.

How to choose the right used car

This article is for those who have decided to choose a used car on their own or simply who want to refresh their minds with useful information. We will try to talk about the most important points that you need to pay attention to in order to choose the right car .

Sooner or later, a person matures for a car and wonders how to choose his first car . Often there is not enough money for a new car and therefore the choice falls on a used one.

If you have enough experience and know the car like the back of your hand, then choosing a used car will not be difficult for you, but in most cases this is not the case. As an option, you can take friends to the car market who are knowledgeable in this area and will help you choose the right car . But not everyone has such friends or they simply may not have free time. Let us dwell on the points that will be useful if you decide to choose a car for the first time :

  1. Decide on the exact amount for which you want to purchase a car.
  2. The cost of the car should be approximately 20% less than the amount you have available. The remaining funds will need to be spent after the purchase (on registration of purchase and sale, insurance, registration, technical inspection, and repairs)
  3. Amount of time . Oddly enough, the more time you spend searching for a car, the better condition of the car you will buy. Remember that the search always pays off! Don't buy the first car you come across!
  4. Decide on the make of the car and read and remember in advance the main advantages and disadvantages of the chosen car model. Also find out the “weak points” of the brand you like. For example, if you decide to choose a used VAZ 2110-12 , then a review of the VAZ 2110 here.

When buying a used ten, you can focus on its average price depending on the year of manufacture:

  • up to 3 years – about 230 thousand rubles.
  • 3-5 years – about 185 thousand rubles.
  • 5-7 years – about 145 thousand rubles.
  • 7-10 years – about 110 thousand rubles.
  1. Buy a car from a friend . Telling everyone you know that you want to buy a car is sometimes the best way to buy a used car . A true friend will not hide hidden car breakdowns from you and will warn you about what you should pay attention to when buying his car.
  2. Buy a car based on an ad on the Internet . Auto.ru is a leader in selling cars on the Internet.
  3. Buy a car based on an ad in the press . The newspaper “From Hand to Hand” is also an excellent market!

We mark the advertisements that we liked the most and start calling their owners. Already at the stage of telephone communication, advertisements will be eliminated very quickly. This will leave you with a couple of options that are really worth taking a look at.

  1. Are there stickers in the PTS? (they shouldn't exist)
  2. Where is the car registered?
  3. How will the sale transaction be completed?
  4. Dictate VIN (check VIN)
  5. How many accidents were there?
  6. Has the car been painted?
  7. Is there corrosion? (rotten sills usually reflect the general condition of the car)
  8. What kind of oil do you fill in the internal combustion engine and at what frequency? (from the answer you can determine the approximate operating conditions and the owner’s attitude towards the car)
  9. How much oil do you add to the internal combustion engine per 10 thousand km? ? (the norm is no more than 500 ml per 10 thousand km.)
  10. What is the gas mileage in the urban cycle? (in summer, the consumption of ten should be about 7.5 l/100 km, in winter a couple of liters more)
  11. What is the general condition of the interior?
  12. What does not work ? (heater, air conditioning if available, etc.)
  13. What condition are the shock absorbers in and when was the last time they were changed?
  14. What is the condition of the gearbox, is there any noise?
  15. How long have you owned this car? (if recently, then it should alert you)
  16. And the most popular question is “Why are you actually selling it?”
Read also:  Where to surrender your license after deprivation

As a rule, after such a telephone conversation, the general condition of the car becomes clear. If the answers satisfy you, then we go for a live inspection. Along the way, you remember that you don’t need to believe any beliefs of the seller, his task is to sell! Check everything YOURSELF!

  1. Check VIN number. (for tens it is stamped on the right cup of the telescopic support support)
  2. We check the geometry of the body (The gaps on all doors should be the same. Russian cars from the factory have different gaps, so don’t be alarmed! :)
  3. We check for rust on the body (Popular places for rust: sills, under the trunk mats, in the places where the fender liners are attached, immediately above the windshield, the bottom of the doors, “jacking” places).
  4. Check the anti-corrosion treatment (if a Russian car is treated with anti-corrosion or has sound insulation, then this is an additional big plus in terms of the condition of the body)
  5. We open and close all the car doors, check the locks and alarms.
  6. We look at the paintwork of the body from different angles and different lighting (Usually painting is done after accidents)
  7. We determine externally the condition of the engine (there should be no oil leaks or knocking noises during operation, the internal combustion engine should operate evenly without shaking)
  8. We look at the smoke that comes out of the exhaust pipe when the engine is warm and when the gas pedal is sharply pressed all the way (Blue smoke indicates high engine wear and high oil consumption. Black smoke means that the car is overfilling.)
  9. Switch all gearbox speeds in turn (Make sure that the switching is clear without backlash)
  10. Check the condition of the interior (If the interior is dirty, then most likely the owner did not take good care of the car as a whole)
  11. We check the operation of the stove in all temperature positions. (The stove is a dozen weak points)
  12. We check the rest of the car’s options (air conditioning, radio, on-board computer (check gas mileage), ESP, heated mirrors and glass, etc.)
  13. Turn off and start the car, or better yet, the engine is cold and the owner starts the car for the first time in front of you on the day of inspection.
  14. We check the car while driving (turn off the radio and listen to extraneous knocks and sounds with the windows closed and open, try driving at different speeds, you can also turn the steering wheel all the way, there should be no knocking)
  15. Determine the condition of the tires (tread depth, presence of hernias, presence of winter kit and its condition)

It is better to pay the seller after the car has been deregistered.
In a consignment store you draw up a certificate-invoice or a purchase and sale agreement . Once you have convinced that the documents have been filled out correctly, you exchange documents and keys for your money. Congratulations! Now you are the owner of your own car.

The further route: insurance company, traffic police (for paperwork), passing MOT and receiving license plates and a PTS!

Remember, the more carefully you choose a used car, the fewer problems you will have with it after purchase.

As a rule, the first problems after buying a car arise due to lack of care during inspection.

If after reading the article you are still not sure that you can choose a used car yourself, then you can use the services of car services for a complete diagnosis of the car.

Some people believe that if they buy a car that was owned by a woman, then the car has not been used much. BUT THIS IS NOT SO !! 🙂

How to Choose a Good Used Car: 7 Steps

https://www.znak.com/2017-09-18/kak_vybrat_horoshiy_avtomobil_s_probegom_8_shagov

How to buy a good used car? The question is relevant for millions of Russians, especially in times of economic recession. Znak.com, with the support of the Avito Auto service, has prepared detailed instructions for buyers.

Let's assume you have decided on your budget and approximate type of car. However, you don’t have a specific car in mind: none of your closest relatives or friends are selling anything suitable. Then we go to the Internet and look for the desired option there.

Step 1. Select a site

It would be very good if this is not a regional portal, but a federal one, operating throughout the Russian Federation: it will be possible to compare prices with neighboring cities and regions. And even if you don’t go there, you can show off the seller with the phrase: “And in Chelyabinsk they offer the same thing for 50 thousand cheaper.”

For example, Avito has the largest car database in the country: it now has more than 700 thousand cars sold in Russia. Almost half of all those who choose used cars online buy cars there.

Step 2. Looking for the right car

The main car sales services now offer differentiation by make, model, year of manufacture, body type, engine, gearbox, drive, and mileage.

On Avito, in addition, you can immediately sort ads with and without photos. Even more useful seems to be the option that separates private advertisements from those submitted by trade-in salons.

A showroom car usually costs a little more.

Step 3. Carefully study the ad itself

Beautiful photos are great, but the devil is in the details. These should be “live” photographs of the car (in a regular yard, on the street, in a garage, etc.). If you see a photo of a car that's too pretty, it might be a promotional image.

It is desirable that in the photographs the car can be examined from different sides and the interior can be seen.

Be sure to check the deadline for submitting your ad. The chance of getting a good discount from the owner of a car that has been on sale for several months is much higher.

The mileage indicated in the ad is, of course, important. However, too little mileage for an old car is a reason to think about it. It’s not that difficult to waste mileage at dubious car repair shops.

Even in the photos (if they are of high quality) you can sometimes see signs of high mileage: headlights yellowed from time to time, varnish peeling off the hood, worn steering wheel, etc.

Body defects and serious tuning are the first signs of a car being involved in an accident or being repaired due to corrosion.

Remember that cars that are lowered, lifted, with trimmed arches, tuning bumpers and optics, snorkels, expedition racks and non-standard tires can become a problem.

Since July 2016, the Customs Union Regulations on Wheeled Vehicles have come into force in Russia, implying certification of all changes made to the design of the vehicle.

The PTS must have a corresponding mark; if it is not there, all operations to re-register such a car to a new owner will be blocked.

Step 4. Make sure the seller is trustworthy

You can do this directly on Avito thanks to the “Public Profile” function.

It allows you to view the user’s current activity and the history of his ads, not only in the “Auto” category, but also in other sections of Avito. This way, we can make sure that we are not dealing with a reseller.

The advantage is that you can buy a car from the direct owner a little cheaper, and in some cases you can also receive a set of tires as a gift.

With the support of Avito, there is an “Avtotek” service, where you can get the full history of a car using the VIN number: find out whether the car was involved in an accident, whether any restrictions are imposed on it, for example, a loan pledge or arrest for the owner’s debts.

An important indicator is the number of owners in the title. If there were more than two owners and the last one owned the car for less than a year, this should suggest the reasons for the hasty sale of the car. It is possible that you have encountered a reseller or the car is in such a condition that its new owner, having been deceived in his choice, is in a hurry to get rid of it.

Step 5. Communication with the seller

It is possible that “the girl who only drove to work” will actually turn out to be a man - “I bet it’s a smooth car, bro.”

In any case, it would not be amiss to write down the basic answers during the first telephone conversation: whether or not the car was in an accident, whether any parts were painted or changed, what work was carried out on the car, including preventive and cosmetic ones, how exactly it was operated. Then, when the meeting “at the hood” takes place, all this will need to be double-checked.

Don’t hesitate to ask the seller for all the documents: passport, car purchase and sale agreement concluded with him, PTS, registration certificate - all this should be photographed. Check also the MTPL policy, which records the number of persons who have the right to drive the car, and whether there is a clause stating that the car can be used as a taxi.

Step 6. Check the machine

Bring an experienced friend with you to the initial inspection of the car. Then it is advisable to check the car at a service station (service station) or with the help of an on-site expert. Experts can also be wrong, but you will save yourself from 99% of the risks.

The expert checks the paintwork with a special thickness gauge, which allows you to identify hidden defects. On most modern cars, mileage is quickly rechecked using a computer that connects to the electronic control unit. To find out whether the car has been repainted, you need to dismantle individual elements - for example, the door seal.

By the way, by snapping off just a couple of plastic parts on the instrument panel and bending the door seal at the top, you can easily determine whether the car has front and side airbags. Their absence is a sure sign that the car has been in an accident.

Step 7. Sales contract and payment procedure

For several years now, the presence of the seller when re-registering a car with the traffic police has not been required. It is enough to verify the numbers and provide a purchase and sale agreement in any form. This simultaneously simplifies and complicates the situation.

The purchase and sale agreement must contain complete passport data of the seller and buyer, as well as the vehicle itself. Make photocopies of documents.

It is reasonable to make the calculation in front of witnesses and in a public place, preferably in a bank branch.

It is also worth remembering that for non-cash payments, a bank card number is enough, and it is better not to disclose CVC, codes from SMS and mobile bank password to third parties.

Along with the documents for the car, there should be two sets of keys, each of which can easily open the car (it’s better to double-check). Also, before signing and handing over the money, it would be a good idea to take another look at the purchase. Occasionally there have been cases when tires or components were changed on a car before it was given to the buyer.

But still these are exceptions. In Russia, thousands of transactions for the purchase and sale of used cars are made every day, and good cars have new owners.
