Every motorist is concerned about the life of the car battery. Not only the trouble-free starting of the car at any time of the year depends on this, but also the safety of the budget, because buying a new battery is quite expensive. Manufacturers consider the following optimal conditions:

  • no strong vibration or shaking.

If you think about it, in our country it is impossible to provide ideal conditions of use, but every driver can make efforts to extend the service life, and this will have a positive result.

The warranty life of a car battery is usually only 1-2 years. This does not mean that the battery will last exactly that long. During this time, manufacturing defects are usually identified that cause the device to malfunction.

For example, displacement of separators, misalignment of plates in the block, poor-quality welding of joints. Typically, such defects are detected in the first 4-7 months of using the battery.

Differences in operation of different batteries

There are various types of batteries, they differ in the material of the electrodes and electrolyte. The most common vehicle starting devices are lead batteries.

They are characterized by high energy intensity and the maximum ability to deliver high current in a short time. Of course, such batteries have a big drawback - the toxicity of the case and contents.

Such devices are disposed of at specialized enterprises.

Nowadays, pure lead is not used as electrodes, but is diluted with impurities, so batteries are divided into types:

  • classic (antimony);
  • low antimony;
  • calcium;
  • hybrid.

In antimony batteries, the volume of antimony in the electrodes is at the level of 5%. This ensures good strength characteristics of the plates.

At the same time, the rate of electrolysis and evaporation increases, so such batteries require frequent maintenance, otherwise the service life of the battery is significantly reduced. Checking the density of the liquid and topping up must be carried out at least once a month.

Basically, such devices are installed on old cars, so the battery life of a domestic car is often very short.

In low-antimony batteries, the boiling process is slower, and they also have a reduced level of self-discharge in storage mode. There is information that low-antimony batteries are maintenance-free or low maintenance.

But this is not true, because the liquid still boils away, just at a slower rate; batteries require monitoring the liquid level and adding water.

At the same time, the life of the battery is practically not affected by the quality of the car’s electrical equipment, and even with voltage drops, rapid wear does not occur, as is the case with devices with other fillers.

Wanting to reduce the rate of liquid boiling, manufacturers began to add calcium instead of antimony to the electrodes. Such batteries are characterized by increased energy intensity and efficiency. And they are the ones who are unattended.

At the same time, overcharging and long-term storage are not harmful to them - all this does not in any way affect the life of the car battery. But there are also several disadvantages: it is enough to strongly discharge the battery 4-5 times, and its energy intensity level is significantly reduced.

And, importantly, this cannot be fixed; the only solution is to replace the battery.

Considering the cost of calcium batteries, they are recommended to be installed on foreign cars whose cost is mid-range or higher. In such machines, electrical equipment operates without failure, so the likelihood of a discharge is minimal.

Of course, devices are more sensitive to improper operating conditions, but the battery life is quite long. Such batteries are marked “Ca/Ca”, this indicates that there is calcium in the plates of both poles.

If you see the “Ca+” marking, it is a hybrid battery. In such devices, electrodes of two types are adjacent - low-antimony and calcium, which makes it possible to collect their positive properties in one battery.

At the same time, the rate of boiling off of the electrolyte is two times lower compared to low-antimony batteries, and the resistance to critical discharges and overcharges is higher.

Such a battery “lives” less than a calcium battery, but longer than a low-antimony battery.

In addition to the electrode material, batteries differ in the type of substance used as an electrolyte. The following types of battery devices are distinguished:

  • alkaline;
  • acidic;
  • gel and AGM.

Acid batteries are the most common for use in starter mode in passenger cars. In alkaline, as the name suggests, the electrolyte is alkali. Their feature is the absence of the process of boiling off the liquid.

Such devices tolerate overcharges well (it is believed that it is better to overcharge them than to undercharge them) and are stored for a long time without deterioration in performance. Alkaline batteries function well at low temperatures, so in winter there will be no problems starting the car.

If the housing is damaged, no harmful fumes are released.

The service life according to GOST is at least 750 cycles. This is a high figure. The price of alkaline batteries is higher than that of acid batteries. The dimensions of these batteries are above average, so they are mainly installed on trucks for operation in traction mode.

In gel batteries, the electrolyte, as the name suggests, is a gel.

It is denser and less fluid than acid or alkali, so it does not leak out when damaged, and the active substance does not fall off the electrodes due to the compacted environment.

It is precisely due to the jelly-like content that such batteries are not afraid of vibrations and shocks. Sometimes sellers indicate that such batteries can be used even upside down, but this is still nothing more than a marketing ploy.

The service life of a maintenance-free battery with a gel filler is quite long and is about 10 years. Such devices have a very low self-discharge rate during storage.

They provide the same level of charge until completely discharged. Moreover, even several overdischarges are not dangerous - after charging, the battery completely restores its nominal capacity.

The disadvantages include unstable operation at low temperatures - this is explained by the lower conductivity of the gel.

What determines the service life of the battery?

To say how long the service life of a car battery is, it is necessary to take into account not only the type of battery itself, but also the operating conditions. The period of use of a maintenance-free battery is usually longer than that of a serviced one. If you do not add electrolyte to a low-antimony or antimony device in time, the battery will not last even a year. It is impossible to restore it.

Temperature conditions also affect battery life. Moreover, not only in winter, but also in summer, extreme temperatures can shorten the life of the device.

In winter, the battery begins to charge normally only when it is heated to above-zero temperatures, so the correct habit is to “warm up the engine.”

And in the summer it can be +60 degrees under the hood, sulfation of the electrodes occurs at an accelerated rate, and the car may simply not start due to sagging battery capacity. As a preventive measure, you can desulfate the battery every 2-3 years, this will extend the life of the car battery.

The normal process of charging the battery, and accordingly its long life, is ensured by the proper operation of the generator and generator relay.

If the generator malfunctions, the battery begins to discharge more strongly, this is fraught with overdischarges, which can simply “kill” the battery. The generator relay protects the battery from overcharging.

If all systems are operating normally, the average life of an acid or alkaline battery will be 5-7 years.

If the car is used mainly in the city, the batteries last less.

Because in city driving the engine is often started, and the trips are short, the battery does not have time to fully charge, the undercharge accumulates, and the voltage drops to critical.

It is worth noting that during long trips around the city or standing in traffic jams with the engine running, the battery still manages to get a full charge.

In addition to the above, how long a car battery lasts is also affected by the battery mount. During sudden maneuvers, the battery can fly out of its seat, and a poorly secured terminal often shorts out against the body. Remember that the battery must be securely seated in the socket.

How to extend battery life

There are several recommendations, the implementation of which depends on how long the car battery lasts. First of all, it is not recommended to use a dead or discharged battery. In winter, it is advisable to let the engine run for 10-15 minutes after starting, so that the battery begins to take charge in normal mode.

If the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, press the clutch pedal when starting the vehicle. If the car does not start, you should not “force” the starter, 4 approaches of 4-5 seconds are enough - this indicates a malfunction of any element in the engine starting system.

Cranking the starter for a long time wastes too much energy.

If in the cold winter you turn on the headlights for 20-30 seconds before starting the engine, this will provoke a chemical reaction in the battery, after which it will warm up faster. Do not forget to regularly inspect the battery case, if necessary, clean the terminals and plastic box from plaque. It would be useful to additionally charge the battery from a charger, this is to prevent undercharging.

By applying most of the tips in practice, you will extend the life of your battery to 5-7 years. If you strictly follow all the recommendations, this time can be 8 years. However, keep in mind that when buying a cheap and obviously not very high-quality device, all recommendations will be useless; the shelf life of a low-quality car battery will not exceed three years.

When choosing a battery, be realistic about energy consumption. This is influenced not only by engine size, but also by various consumers: navigator, recorder, alarm, air conditioning. All other things being equal, engine volumes and consumption points are used for diesel engines with batteries of higher power.
