The German Union for Technical Testing of Automobiles (VdTUV) has published a long-awaited, detailed report on the reliability of models on German roads.

The TUV-Report was compiled based on the results of a vehicle inspection - experts carefully examined all cars arriving for inspection and included in their list those models that, for one reason or another, could not pass the inspection.

The reasons for refusal to issue a permit to drive on the roads could be very different - some had rattling suspension, some cars had problems with the level of harmful substances in the exhaust, and a fairly decent percentage of cars did not pass inspection due to faulty brakes or steering .

In general, VdTUV experts note that in recent years the number of cars that cannot immediately pass inspection has been increasing. If in 1996 there were only 11.6% of such cars (and even then many of them were already thoroughly “used”), then last year there were already 18.2 potentially dangerous cars!

Experts are also surprised by the fact that the number of problems is growing not only among 7-10-year-old cars, but also among 2-3-year-old cars whose warranty has only recently expired. If in 1996 only 3.5% of relatively new cars failed to pass inspection, now this figure has become 5.9%.

If we talk about the most reliable and unreliable cars, the situation is as follows. Among cars aged 2-3 years, owners of Opel Meriva, Ford Fusion, Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Touran, Mercedes SLK, Mercedes A-Class, Mazda6, Ford Fiesta, Porsche Boxster and Audi A8 had the least problems.

Well, the most trouble was caused by such models as Citroen Saxo, Chrysler PT Crusier, Seat Alhambra, VW Sharan and, of course, Kia Carnival. 25.1% of all 2-3 year old Kia Carnivals in Germany failed their inspection! For comparison, the VW Sharan, which is in penultimate place, has 11.5% failures, while the leader in the ranking, Opel Meriva, has only 1.8%.

Moreover, the problems of the Kia Carnival are not accidental. This car performed worst of all in the category of cars 4-5 years old (33.9% of problems during maintenance). Carnival's list of losers among 4-5 year old cars also included Citroen Saxo, Peugeot 106, Renault Laguna and Chrysler Voyager.

The best here were Porsche 996 (3.7%), Subaru Forester, Audi A4, Porsche Boxster, Toyota RAV 4, Mercedes SL, Mazda Demio, Mazda MX5, Mercedes SLK and Toyota Yaris.

Among 6-7 year old cars, Toyota, Mazda, Mercedes and Porsche also look very good. The most reliable SUV was the Toyota RAV4 (4.8%). Next come the Porsche Boxster, Toyota Yaris, Mercedes SLK, Porsche 996, Mercedes SL, Mazda Demio, Mazda MX5, Toyota Avensis and the Subaru Legacy (7.5%) closes the top ten.

Well, if you want to bring a used 6-7 year old car from Germany, then you probably shouldn’t pay attention to such models as Skoda Felicia, Alfa Romeo 145/146, Ford KA, Renault Twingo and Chrysler Voyager. They too often fail technical inspection.

In the category of cars 8-9 years old, Porsche Boxster (6.2%), Porsche 993, Mercedes SL, Toyota RAV 4, Toyota Starlet, Mercedes SLK, Subaru Legacy, Mazda MX5, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Carina (11.6) perform well %).

But it’s best for owners to get rid of cars like Renault Megane, Alfa Romeo 145/146, Citroen ZX, Chrysler Voyager and Renault Twingo - they are starting to cause too many problems (35.7% of all Twingos cannot pass inspection!).

As for old women who are 10-11 years old, the following models are most preferred: Porsche 993, Mercedes SL, Mazda MX 5, Subaru Legacy, Mercedes SL, Toyota Carina, Mercedes C-Klasse, Volvo 940-960, Mercedes E -Klasse and Suzuki Vitara.
