The brake system on a Toyota Corolla: an essential safety element

Toyota Corolla E150 (2010+). BRAKE SYSTEM

The car is equipped with two independent braking systems: service and parking. The first, equipped with a hydraulic drive, provides braking when the car is moving, the second brakes the car when it is parked.

The working system is dual-circuit, with a diagonal connection of the brake mechanisms of the front and rear wheels.

One hydraulic drive circuit ensures the operation of the right front and left rear brake mechanisms, the other - the left front and right rear.

If one of the circuits of the service brake system fails, another circuit is used to stop the vehicle with sufficient efficiency.

The hydraulic drive includes the main brake cylinder 23 (), vacuum booster 5, hydroelectronic module 22 of the anti-lock brake system, brake mechanisms of the front and rear wheels along with working cylinders and pipelines.

Parking brake system - with cable drive to the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels.

1

Brake system:

1 – brake disc of the right front wheel;

2 – brake mechanism of the right front wheel;

3 – flexible hose of the brake mechanism of the right front wheel;

4 – pipeline of the brake mechanism of the right front wheel;

5 – vacuum booster;

6 – parking brake drive lever;

7.16 – parking brake drive cables;

8 – brake disc of the right rear wheel;

9 – brake mechanism of the right rear wheel;

10 – flexible hose of the brake mechanism of the right rear wheel;

11 – pipeline of the brake mechanism of the right rear wheel;

12 – pipeline of the brake mechanism of the left rear wheel;

13 – flexible hose of the brake mechanism of the left rear wheel;

14 – brake mechanism of the left rear wheel;

15 – brake disc of the left rear wheel;

17 – brake pedal;

18 – brake mechanism of the right front wheel;

19 – brake disc of the brake mechanism of the left front wheel;

20 – flexible hose of the brake mechanism of the left front wheel;

21 – pipeline of the brake mechanism of the left front wheel;

22 – hydroelectronic ABS module;

23 – main brake cylinder.

The brake mechanisms of the front wheels are disc, with automatic adjustment of the gap between the pads 3 () and the disc 8 with a floating caliper 7. A working brake cylinder 4 is installed on the caliper. The pad guide 6 is bolted to the steering knuckle. The movable bracket is attached with bolts 5 to guide pins installed in the holes of the shoe guide.

The guide pins are lubricated with grease and protected by rubber covers 1. A piston with an o-ring is installed in the cavity of the cylinder of the movable bracket. Due to the elasticity of this ring, an optimal gap is maintained between the pads and the ventilated disc, the surface of which is protected by the brake shield.

When braking, the piston, under the influence of fluid pressure, presses the inner pad to the disc, the reaction force moves the movable bracket on the fingers and the outer pad is also pressed against the disc, and the pressing force of the pads is the same.

When the brake is released, the piston is moved away from the pad due to the elasticity of the sealing ring, resulting in a small gap being formed between the pads and the disc.

3

Front wheel brake:

1 – protective cover of the guide pin;

2 – air release valve;

3 – internal brake pad;

4 – brake cylinder;

5 – guide pin bolt;

6 – pad guide;

7 – brake bracket;

8 – brake disc.

The main brake cylinder 8 () of the “tandem” type of the hydraulic brake drive consists of two separate chambers connected to independent hydraulic circuits. The front chamber is connected to the right front and left rear brake mechanisms, the rear – to the left front and right rear.

4

Master brake cylinder with reservoir:

1 – reservoir of the main brake cylinder;

2 – sealing ring of the main brake cylinder;

3 – piston pusher;

4 – mounting flange;

5 – tank neck;

6 – brake fluid level sensor;

7, 9 – pipeline connection holes;

8 – main brake cylinder.

A tank 1 is installed on the main cylinder, the internal cavity of which is divided by partitions into two compartments. Each compartment feeds one of the brake master cylinder chambers.

When you press the brake pedal, the pistons of the master brake cylinder begin to move, the working edges of the cuffs cover the compensation holes, the chambers and the reservoir are separated, and the displacement of brake fluid begins.

The vacuum booster installed between the pedal mechanism and the main brake cylinder, when braking, due to the vacuum in the engine intake manifold through the rod and piston of the first chamber of the main cylinder, creates additional force proportional to the force from the pedal.

The rear wheel brakes () are disc brakes with automatic clearance adjustment. The brake pads are actuated by a single hydraulic wheel cylinder. The optimal clearance between the disc and pads is maintained according to the same principle as for the brake mechanisms of the front wheels. The working brake mechanisms of the rear wheels are combined with the parking brake mechanisms.

5

Rear wheel brake:

1 – brake mechanism shield;

2 – pad guide;

3 – brake pad;

4 – bracket;

5 – protective cover of the guide pin;

6 – brake disc;

7 – brake hose;

8 – brake hose bolt fitting;

9 – air release valve;

10 – angular parking brake lever;

11 – tip of the parking brake cable;

12 – guide pin bolt;

13 – parking brake cable cover.

The parking brake (), mechanically actuated, consists of a lever mounted on the base of the body between the front seats, a front cable with an adjusting device and an equalizer, to which two rear cables are connected, and release levers installed in the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels.

When the parking brake is applied, the corner lever 7 and the rod 3 (drive assembly), which is connected to the corner lever, rotate under the action of the parking brake drive cable. At the same time, the input shaft 8 advances the rod, moving the locking ball 4.

The screw coupling 9 on the piston, connected to the rod, also moves, moving away from the piston 2 and the brake disc pad 1, creating a braking force. The rear ends of the rear cables are connected by angle levers mounted on the primary shafts of the parking brake mechanisms.

The parking brake lever, mounted between the front seats on the floor tunnel, is equipped with a mechanism for adjusting the cable tension and an equalizer. The front ends of the rear cables are connected to the equalizer of the tension mechanism.

The parking brake does not require special care. During routine repairs, check the degree of wear of its parts, make sure that the splined connection of the angle lever with the input shaft of the mechanism is in good condition. Replace excessively worn parts.

If a break in the sheaths or wires is detected, the cables must be replaced with new ones.

6

Scheme of operation of the parking brake mechanism:

1 – disc brake pad;

2 – piston;

3 – rod;

4, 5 – locking ball;

6, 8 – input shaft;

7 – corner lever;

9 – screw coupling;

10 – brake disc.

In addition, the car is equipped with electronic systems to enhance active safety: anti-lock braking system (ABS) and brake force distribution (EBD), which are described in section. "Security systems".

The hydraulic brake system is integrated into a single whole by metal tubes and hoses. The system is filled with a special brake fluid of at least DOT-4 class, which must be replaced periodically. The procedure for replacing brake fluid and checking the brake system is described below.

USEFUL TIPS

Some drivers, in an effort to reduce wear on the parking brake cables, try to use it less often. Such “savings” lead to the opposite result: the cable, rarely moving in the shell, gradually loses its mobility, gets jammed, and as a result the cable breaks. Therefore, use the parking brake whenever necessary.

Toyota Corolla brake system repair

Choose another model

The brake system of a modern car is an extremely complex combination of components that must be characterized by unprecedented operational reliability, because road safety depends on the general condition of this system.

You should also take into account the fact that the individual elements of the braking system, whether it is a passenger car or a truck, are subject to regular high loads, since driving on many sections of the highway involves constant use of the brakes.

And in the event of emergency braking, this load increases many times over.

The above features make checking the Toyota Corolla brake system during a routine inspection a particularly important and responsible task, because the life of the driver, passengers and other road users often depends on the condition of the car’s brakes. Regular maintenance at a technical center includes a thorough check of the condition of the brake pads and parking brake.

If a visual inspection shows that the brake pads have any, even minor damage or wear, they must be replaced. The maintenance schedule for most modern vehicles also requires replacing brake fluid every three years, and every six years all flexible hoses involved in the brake system must be replaced.

Of course, scheduled maintenance does not exclude the possibility of unexpected problems occurring - not a single component of any car is immune from this. But regular inspection and diagnostics using the latest equipment will help to significantly reduce the chance of any breakdowns in the Toyota Corolla brake system.

If we talk about phenomena that indicate problems in the car’s braking system, the most common is an increase in the brake pedal travel, which indicates air getting into the master cylinder and a lack of brake fluid in the system.

It is worth contacting a technical center if at some point you need to apply more force to brake than before. This may indicate that one of the brake booster parts has broken or will fail in the near future. It is worth thinking about repairing the brake system if the discs or pads heat up during braking.

It is also wrong to loosen the parking brake - normally it should reliably hold the vehicle on a slight slope.

Another common phenomenon that indicates a problem with the braking system is the vehicle skidding to one side when braking or the vehicle braking arbitrarily. There can be several reasons for this behavior of the car, and the unit “responsible” for this can only be determined by carrying out a comprehensive diagnosis of the brake system in a professional technical center.

If you notice that your vehicle's brake system is not working properly, please contact our technical center. Our experienced specialists will carry out maintenance, full diagnostics and prompt repair of the Toyota Corolla brake system in full accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer, using branded spare parts and modern equipment.

      Active safety

      • anti-lock braking system (ABS)

      • electronic brake force distribution (EBD)

      • emergency brake booster (BA)

      ABS helps maintain vehicle control when braking on slippery roads by distributing braking force across the wheels in such a way as to prevent locking and ensure maximum traction of each wheel with the road.

      ABS is complemented by an EBD system that optimally distributes braking force between the wheels. The combination of these two systems helps to avoid wheel locking and ensures safe maneuvering when avoiding obstacles with braking.

      When creating Corolla, the company used the most advanced safety technologies. Corolla drivers can rest easy: the car is equipped with a full system of airbags (depending on trim level). SRS airbags deploy in two stages.

      Corolla also comes with a two-stage driver and front passenger seat belt warning system. If the warning light is ignored and the seat belt is not fastened, an audible signal will sound and gradually increase in intensity.

      Like all Toyota vehicles, Corolla's body structure provides highly effective crash energy absorption. Front and rear body crumple zones, reinforced pillars and side protection bars dissipate impact energy, reducing the risk of injury to the driver and passengers.

      To protect the driver’s legs, the car is equipped with an injury-proof pedal assembly, and an injury-proof steering column, together with seat belts and airbags, protects the driver’s head and chest from injury.

      The front seats are designed to protect against whiplash injuries in rear-end collisions (WIL): the upper part of the seatback provides support for the upper back of the person, and the head restraint limits rearward movement of the head.

      This design minimizes the risk of neck injury due to sudden rearward head movement during a low-speed collision.

Toyota Corolla Brake System

Please enable JavaScript!

The models described in this manual are equipped with a hydraulic dual-circuit braking system with separation between the front and rear wheels. Disc brakes are installed on the front wheels, and drum or disc brakes on the rear wheels, depending on the model.

Both front and rear brakes are self-adjusting.

Disc brakes automatically adjust based on brake pad wear, while drum brakes have an adjusting mechanism that is activated when the vehicle's handbrake is applied.

Hydraulic system

The hydraulic system consists of two circuits. The master cylinder of the brake system has two reservoirs for two circuits and, in the event of a brake fluid leak or failure of one of the circuits, the second circuit will work.

The dual pressure relief valve, which is mounted on the rear wall of the engine compartment, ensures a balance in braking power between the front and rear brakes.

On models equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), a vehicle load-sensing pressure limiting valve limits rear brake pressure based on vehicle load.

Vacuum booster

The vacuum booster uses the difference between engine intake manifold pressure and atmospheric pressure to boost the brakes. It is installed on the rear wall of the engine compartment.

Hand brake

The handbrake only applies the rear brakes. The drive is carried out using cables. The car is placed on the handbrake using a lever mounted on the center console.

Service

After disassembling any element of the brake system, it is necessary to check the operation of the brake system before starting normal operation of the vehicle. When checking your brakes, perform test braking on a level, dry, flat surface. Testing under other conditions may give incorrect results.

Check the operation of the brake system at different speeds and with different braking forces. Braking should be uniform and the car should not pull in any direction. Try not to lock the brakes, as this causes the vehicle to slide and reduces braking efficiency and vehicle controllability.

Tire quality, vehicle load and wheel alignment are also factors that affect brake performance.
