Tuning Toyota Corolla Fielder
All motorists know the Toyota Corolla Fielder. They characterize it as an ordinary station wagon for trips to the country. But not many people know that there is a powerful version with a 2 zz-ge engine and 192 horsepower.
This is a rather rare configuration with a souped-up engine; it was produced only in the first generation Toyota Corolla Fielder.
Obviously, the very event that destroyed the desire of engineers to make powerful versions of popular models had not yet occurred.
The tuning did not really change the appearance of the Toyota Fielder from other trim levels, except that the body kit could give off a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Although there is some aggressiveness in the car. It’s as if a fast engine charges the whole car with its spirit.
But, be that as it may, this car is still a Corolla with small dimensions, a high urban seating position, inexpensive finishing materials and a confident Japanese status. Although the regular Corolla sedan did not have a powerful package. That is, tuning was not used in all Corolla sedan models. Sedans were content with a maximum of 137 horsepower engine.
The engine of the Toyota Corolla Fielder 2 ZZ-GE version has a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 192 horsepower. A natural representative of Z motors with almost the same operational advantages and disadvantages as the younger engines in the series:
- demanding of oil;
- iridium spark plugs;
- only 98 gasoline, despite the fact that the predecessor 1 zz-ge needed 95 gasoline.
Yamaha mechanics also had a hand in the design of the 2 zz-ge. Since the engine volume remained the same as 1 zz-ge 1.8 liters, when boosting the engineers radically reduced the thickness of the partition between the cylinders and increased the diameter of the pistons.
There is also an innovative VVTL-i valve timing system. Thanks to it, when accelerating, you get a feeling similar to turning on Honda's VTEC. Of course, these engines of a later release were more reliable; the Japanese generally react quickly to detected deficiencies.
The engine shows very good dynamics in combination with a six-speed manual transmission. Together with the gearbox, this aluminum engine weighs just over one hundred kilograms. We also did tuning of the automatic transmission. Having installed a forced engine, the company's engineers left a simple suspension. The interior equipment is also standard, nothing surprising.
In general, the tuning version of the Corolla Fielder has a fairly large selection of interiors, from gray and simple to black and beige, with wood trim. A plus is the high seating position and comfortable visibility. Toyota Fielder is equipped with several airbags (front and side).
Of course, the large trunk has not gone away; the Fielder still remains a large station wagon. There is plenty of space in the trunk.
In general, this is a very popular car; domestic motorists are happy with the good combination of decent and decent appearance, unpretentiousness and ease of maintenance. You could even call it a family car.
True, they often choose the Corolla sedan. The next generations of Toyota Fielder did not install very powerful engines.
The car itself is assembled only in Japan. Therefore, this is a classic Japanese car. It can be easily recognized by its large headlights.
At the end of the 90s, Toyota decided to take a closer look at the European market, and if the first eight generations of Toyota were created taking into account the taste of American consumers, the ninth generation has an obvious European focus. This model was created in the European design center of Toyota.
The interior of the Toyota Fielder is a classic example of Japanese design and quality. It's comfortable to sit behind the wheel. There are no questions about instruments and controls. The ergonomics of the driver's seat are correct. All blocks, levers and switches for additional functions are in place. Under the left hand are classic Japanese switches.
The instrument panel is again classic. The Fielder is characterized by high quality interior assembly. Additional containers for small items are also provided by the door panels. In general, the car offers the widest possibilities for transporting and storing various goods.
Corolla Fielder is a classic representative of small city cars that belongs to the compact class. Naturally, for such a car, the space provided to front and rear passengers is important. Because such cars are most often purchased by family people.
You should immediately note the softness of the clutch pedal; the release bearing moves using a hydraulic drive. The clutch engages clearly. The travel of the gearshift lever is quite large.
Corolla Fielder is equipped with electric power steering; the steering wheel can be turned with one hand in a parking lot. At high speeds the steering becomes heavier.
In principle, the car handles well, although the car cannot be called a standard in its class either.

Toyota Corolla Fielder S in body kits on DRIVE2
I won’t describe the technical specifications since they can be found on the Internet in a minute, but rather I’ll tell you about the purchase, driving and briefly about owning this car, because I’ll only start driving a life history now, and the car has already been in the family for 5 years. I also want to immediately apologize for describing events in parentheses; it’s just easier for me to express my thoughts.
So, what we have, Toyota Fielder (hereinafter Filya, Filka, Filimon, etc.) 2001. Automatic transmission in S package (optiron, climate control with buttons) 4WD.
Well, let’s say 4WD for beginners, since among jeepers my all-wheel drive only causes smiles and laughter, but still, in the mud and in a light snow jam of the city, it is more difficult to land this car than a regular mono-wheel drive.
Also from + we have air ducts from the heater for the rear passengers, although due to the rubber mats their work is reduced to 0, but they are there and that’s good. Of the minuses, there is no heated mirrors, I’ve been wanting to do it for about 3 years now, but my hands are growing in the wrong place, and I still can’t find the money.
Filya was bought in a tortured state, after several money changers in Novosibirsk, which was confirmed by a copy of 25 PTS and a new 54.
Flaws
Body: hit on the right side in the side, it was done poorly, but the impact was not big; the doors and the middle pillar at the bottom were slightly damaged, the doors were replaced, but the bottom of the pillar was not even smoothed with putty; they were stupidly painted on top, and even with smudges.
Engine: Not a big oil guzzler, this fact was hidden by overbuying with the help of filled in additives, since during inspection the engine worked well, and after 1-2 days the hydraulic compensators immediately began to knock, maybe we were deaf when buying, although we listened to the engine, but oh well.
Box: There were also a lot of problems, I’ll just give an example that there weren’t enough seals in the box and oil was just leaking, I think there’s no need to explain anything further. But it was under contract and in good condition; the transmission still shifts without kicks or jerks.
Suspension: It was also not in the best condition, which became known already when moving the car, but more on that a little later.
I think that many who read the top text wondered why I bought this bucket of bolts.
The answer to this question will be simple, I needed a Fielder in such a body kit, in such a configuration, and in Siberia at that moment there was only one, so I was mentally prepared for all the disadvantages, and I bought the car turning a blind eye to all the disadvantages.
The money in my pants was burning in my pocket, and I didn’t want to walk, I wasn’t used to it, the family always had a car. And the inspection took place on the highway between Barnaul and Novosibirsk, and therefore it was not technically possible to check anything.
Driving
When driving the car over a bump, a spring was knocked out of the strut cup and the wheel core was torn (one coil of the spring was broken off, but instead of replacing it, the spring was carefully put back by the former owner)
The results of this breakdown:
1) My brother’s injured hand (during reloading the car fell off the jack, my brother, trying to quickly put the wheel on, saving the car from falling to the ground, pinched his hand between the fender and the wheel) 2) I have a bruise on my shoulder (I held the car by the rack so that my brother’s arm wouldn’t be broken )3) The shock of the wife who saw our muzzles red from zeal and teeth clenched in pain while she was running and stopping the ride, fortunately we didn’t have to wait long and the people passing by helped us, for which we are very grateful. 3) A torn tire, which the spring tore, in As a result, I had to buy a set of tires for 8,000 rubles. (although I returned some of it by selling the 3 remaining wheels for 5,000 rubles, but 3,000 rubles in the minus + tire fitting costs) 4) 5,000 rubles. Tow truck services, since it was not possible to fix the breakdown on the highway, and I had to drag Filya to Barnaul
5) The front right fender, dented by my brother’s hand and a wheel.
Exploitation
Now I’ll briefly tell you about Filka’s history in our family over the past 5 years. After a fun drive, Filya was driven in for suspension repairs, the front springs were replaced (the rear ones were changed before me), a pair of front silent blocks, and some minor things, too, Filya was raised with spacers. Next, Filya was sent to repair the automatic transmission (replacement of seals and oil).
Half a year later, Filka ran to eliminate the engine oil leak, thank goodness the side did not need to bore anything, the rings were stuck, and therefore they were replaced with the replacement of everything necessary for them and gaskets (there is no waste, the engine is working fine) Upon opening it was revealed that the timing chain had not been replaced for a long time (the old owner spoke about this).
Also, due to inexplicable factors, the rear window burst and was replaced with a Chinese one (the car was parked in winter and was running with the heater on, I stood next to it, there was cotton and no glass 🙁) The automatic transmission cable also failed and was replaced with a used one. The ABS sensor failed and was also replaced with a contract one. The VVTI sensor was replaced with a new original.
I bought a set of summer tires for casting 15, a SONY 2 DIN radio with a screen (maybe one day I’ll get around to installing a reverse camera), a shelf in the trunk, a set of rubber mats for the interior and a mat in the trunk.
Well, I won’t describe the repairs, which were not particularly memorable, and especially the maintenance on oil, filters, spark plugs, seals and pads, which the car regularly visited for all 5 years
Now it’s time to talk about the bad, during the operation Filka got hit on the body, the front bumper was damaged, the left side was scratched (scratches on the left fender and front door), the VAZ 07 arrived in the rear bumper, the front bumper broke the fastening of the left headlight, the right fender got it during the haul , and more minor scratches have been added over the 5 years of service.
I briefly talked about the operation, now I can express my opinion about the + and - Filki (the strongest in my opinion).
+
1) Average landing (before that I drove cars where you walk with your butt on the asphalt, or at best in the middle, Fielder is definitely taller.
2) Hard seats with little lateral support, the fifth point doesn’t fall through, you don’t fly out of the seat when turning 3) Soft (Toyota) suspension 4) 4WD is definitely a plus, the cross-country ability is higher, the consumption is not much more, the service can only be considered a minus, but even then not critical in terms of money.
5) Short nose, oh, at first it’s a little unusual, but then it’s so cute how small it gets through everywhere and its muzzle sticks out everywhere, after the fielder I generally lost interest in big cars (I used to love Camrys, Chasers, crosses and various jeeps)
—
1) What immediately catches your eye is the front pillar, which is wide and interferes a little with visibility, but once you get used to it, it doesn’t seem to bother you much. 2) The fielder is a sail machine, mine for sure, I don’t know if the body kits with spacers are to blame, or if they’re all like that, but highway over 120 km.h. in windy weather and on uneven roads it is impossible to drive, Filya chatters, pushes, drifts, etc.
3) The legroom for the rear passengers if the front seats are moved all the way back, and with a height of 180 cm, otherwise it will be cramped (personally for me it’s cramped) simply CATASTROPHICALLY small, only my child can fit in there normally, personally I’ve been able to fit in there myself. , and the most annoying thing is that damn there is a huge trunk in the back, which I use less often than the rear seats, couldn’t it really have been made adjustable like the Vista Ordeo (of course it can’t be a Corolla, budget class, etc.)
The pros and cons are indicated only in my subjective opinion.
Well, I think for the introduction I’ve already drawn out so much, so that’s enough letters, whoever has read and mastered all my writings, thank you so much, man (it’s not for nothing that I’ve been squeezing all this out of myself for 3 days).
I also apologize for my illiteracy, it is congenital and cannot be cured.
I’ll upload one photo for now, since Fili’s butt is now bare (no bumper), it’ll be better if I upload new ones. Well, let's move on to the BZ.
Good luck to everyone, respect on the roads.

Toyota Corolla Fielder. Maintenance schedule, frequency and main work
The choice of tires for a COROLLA FIELDER driver, as well as for any other driver, is a serious issue that directly affects driving safety, so this is not an issue on which you need to save even in small things. At a speed of 150 km. / hour You should feel confident, and not as if you were playing roulette with fate - “it will shoot or it won’t shoot.”
The wrong choice of wheels and tires has a bad effect on the handling of the TOYOTA COROLLA FIELDER, the service life of the wheel and bearing, the cooling of the brake mechanism, the accuracy of the speedometer reading, the braking distance, which will ultimately affect driving safety.
Tires come in several types:
-
road (highway) . . . . . . . .- HIGHWAY
-
universal (all-season) – ALL SEASON or ALL WEATHER
-
winter . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . – SNOW or MUD + SNOW – M+S
-
Expressways. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .-PERFORMANCE
-
off-road
Road - manufactured for driving on roads with a hard, good surface, whether dry or wet. Use on ice or snow is strictly prohibited.
High-speed - as a rule, they are not used on TOYOTA FIELDER; they are designed for use on higher-class cars and at high average speeds. We give in the review so that there is complete information on the choice of tires, in case someone wants to buy.
These tires provide a higher level of controllability due to increased grip properties and withstand high temperature loads. Ideal for street racers. As you know, you have to pay for everything, so it is here. These tires wear out quickly and, of course, such tires are not comfortable, but they are worth it.
The type of tires on the COROLLA FIELDER should be selected based on operating conditions and, of course, driving style. Since global warming in most of its territory has not yet fully arrived in Russia, it is recommended to use 2 sets of tires for the summer season and for the winter.
All-season tires are slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past for motorists, as they cannot provide a sufficiently comfortable and safe ride in any season.
It is highly not recommended to use tires from different manufacturers, with different tread patterns, with different load capacities on the FIELDER in one set of 4 tires, do not combine radial and diagonal tires, and of course with different maximum speed values. Don’t “turn on the redneck” - don’t save money, it will cost more (read the first paragraph).
Tire sizes.
D – outer diameter; d – landing diameter of the wheel rim; H – tire profile height; W – profile width.
Tire markings.
When selecting tires for TOYOTA FIELDER, understanding them is not so difficult. 98% of information about a tire will be provided by its markings on the side surface of the tire.
For example: 195 / 60 R 15 88 V
195 – tire profile width in mm. ;
60 – the ratio of the height of the tire profile to its width in%;
R – designation of a radial tire; B – designation of diagonal tire;
15 – landing size in inches;
88 – conditional load capacity index
V – speed index
