Do-it-yourself winch - simple manufacturing methods
A winch is an indispensable device both in the household and in the garage. Lift a roll of roofing felt onto the roof, throw a couple of bags of cement into the second floor window of a private house under construction, pull the engine out of the hood, and drag the broken car itself into the garage... This is an incomplete list of tasks that can easily be done alone with its help.
Drum-type devices for lifting or moving heavy objects differ in the way they transmit torque. From our school physics course we know how the shoulder works. Losing in speed or distance, we gain in strength. The phrase of Archimedes: “Give me a fulcrum, and I will turn the Earth upside down” precisely describes the principle of operation of the winch.
A manual winch, with the help of an attached shoulder, increases human strength so much that one operator can move cars or lift weights of several hundred kilograms. Although the principle of operation is the same (from a mechanical point of view), these devices have different methods of execution.
Manual drum winch - varieties
A hand winch with a drum is a classic of the genre. In addition to the common element - the pulley on which the cable is wound, the devices have different types of drive.
Single speed gear drive
A large, main gear is firmly attached to the drum. The entire load falls on it, and on the fastening. Therefore, the reliability of the elements must be at the proper level. In mesh with the main one, there is a small driving gear.
The ratio of the number of teeth is the value of the gear ratio. In other words, gain. The drive gear is integral with the drive shaft. Since we are talking about a hand tool, a handle is attached to the shaft for rotation.
The length of the lever also affects the degree of reinforcement. The larger the handle arm, the less effort you need to apply.
With the help of such devices, you can single-handedly lift several centners of cargo or move a car weighing 2-3 tons. At the same time, the rotation speed of the drum is quite high.
Multi-speed gear drive
The design consists of two or more pairs of gears, each of which has a gain of tens of times. With sequential engagement, these coefficients add up, multiplying the force.
The other side of the coin is a proportional reduction in speed. Having such a winch, you can slowly vertically lift loads of more than a ton, but if you have to work with two bags of cement, the lifting time will stretch for tens of minutes.
Therefore, manufacturers have provided the opportunity to use each pair of gears separately. By fixing the handle on a straight pair, we get medium force at high speed. By transferring it to the second pair, we lose speed, but double our strength.
A mandatory element of all manual winches is a stopper, or “pawl”
It works on the principle of a ratchet mechanism. After the force on the handle stops, the teeth of the sprocket rest against the stopper, preventing the cable from unwinding under the weight of the load. This improves safety, but the mechanism has a disadvantage.
It works perfectly when going up, but is completely useless when going down. During reverse rotation, the pawl is simply thrown to the side, releasing the ratchet.
Worm drive
To increase the force, a worm mechanism is used. The principle of calculating the transmission pair, compared to flat gears, is somewhat different, but the technique is the same. A small-diameter helical gear rotates the main gear mounted on the drum.
The advantage of the design is the high gain. Another plus is that the design is self-locking. That is, if you do not apply force to the handle, the machine will stop. This increases safety and comfort.
The handle can be rotated in any direction, lifting and lowering the load - without fear of it falling off.
A serious design flaw is the high friction in the worm pair. The mechanism needs constant lubrication, otherwise wear will be simply catastrophic. When working “dry,” the pair may simply jam.
Considering the mechanics of the process, there are restrictions on the weight with which you can work. But the tool turns out to be compact and is often used in the home.
Planetary reductor
With outstanding compactness (the gear mechanism is actually located inside the drum), the number of gear pairs can reach up to ten. The gain with this design can reach hundreds of times. The only drawback is the high cost of the product, so it is rarely used in everyday life.
Block required for winch operation
A hand winch mounted on the floor or workbench can only move objects horizontally. To lift heavy objects to a height, you need an additional device - a block. It is a pulley with a suspension through which the cable is thrown.
The drawing shows the mechanism of operation of a set of winch and block.
Moreover, this device has additional capabilities. Each added block doubles the force on the cable.
This property of block drives is widely used in rigging work. In a compact design, the winch is assisted by a block amplifier.
All of the above devices are sold for a lot of money. And any of these products can be made independently.
Homemade winches
Ratchet from Kamaz
How many people know how to make a winch from a brake ratchet? And what exactly is this Ratchet?
Many trucks (our products for Kamaz are popular) use a self-leveling mechanism to adjust the brakes; in common parlance, a brake ratchet is used. A worm gearbox is located inside the device.
All that remains is to adapt the handle to the end of the worm pair, and the drum to the main axis - and the winch is ready. Gear ratio 1:20. The drum can be mounted on the standard brake axle by cutting it with a grinder. If you use a block connection with one elbow, the power will double. Don’t forget to lubricate – and the device will serve you for many years.
Such a winch in the garage will not help you pull out the engine, but it will save a lot of effort during repairs. This device is especially useful for lifting heavy objects from a pit.
Video - how to make a ratchet winch for Kamaz with your own hands.
Chainsaw in a winch
If you are busy building a summer house where there is no electricity yet, you can build a winch from a chainsaw with your own hands. Initially, such a device was invented by lumberjacks to facilitate the procedure of tying felled trunks.
The photo shows the classic “Friendship” with the body removed. A motorcycle chain is connected to the drive sprocket. The drum is not difficult to make. A large sprocket from the wheel of the same motorcycle is attached to it.
We get a double gearbox - our own on the chainsaw, and a chain gear made of two sprockets with a gear ratio of about 1:10. This design will serve for many years, extending the life of the components from which it was made.
Manual lever winch
The simplest device for moving loads is a lever winch. With its help, you can pull a load into the body, drag the carcass of an animal killed while hunting, or pull out a stuck car.
The device is not very expensive, but even Chinese samples cost some money. For those who like to do things with their own hands, we offer a drawing of a lever winch, from which the principle of its operation is very clear.
A drum is fixed inside the frame, with a ratchet sprocket.
There is a stop on the lever that rotates the sprocket. The longer the lever, the more force you apply. This is only a small part of the structures that can be made from scrap materials. Perhaps you will come up with something completely original.

Manual homemade winch: from a simple do-it-yourself device to an electrically driven drum design
The winch is an ancient invention that appeared before man studied the laws of physics.
The device operates on the principle of a lever—the operator applies little force to the handle, and the device moves heavy objects. An irreplaceable thing for car enthusiasts or summer residents, but expensive.
Making a handmade homemade winch solves the problem of high price. For little money you can make a design of any complexity.
When driving off-road, a driver may encounter an insurmountable obstacle. Then the car will have to be pulled out of the mud or sand with something. A winch is the ideal tool for this. Some vehicles have the device installed on the front bumper from the factory. Purchasing a ready-made winch can cost a lot of money, so it makes sense to make it yourself from improvised means.
A factory or homemade winch with a manual drive (or with an electric drive from a starter) allows you to pull out a car without a tow. Experienced car enthusiasts prefer home-made devices that fully meet their needs. Factory winches often fail or cost a lot of money.
Device types
Classification is the first thing you need to know about the traction device. They are divided depending on the type of design, drive and technical features. Some types of winches are easy to make yourself - this is the simplest mechanism with a manual drive . And complex structures will work reliably only if they are manufactured in a factory.
This specificity must be taken into account when choosing a type for self-production. There are removable and stationary winches. The first option can be removed from the car, carried out maintenance or used for other economic purposes.
Classification depending on the type of drive:
- Manual. Its advantages are its small size and relatively light weight. The work is carried out according to the drum principle. The cable is pulled onto a separate reel, and it is rotated by hand. The disadvantage lies in the limitation of the mass with which work can be done - no more than 1 ton.
- Mechanical. The drum with the cable is rotated by the machine's engine. The design is heavy, so car enthusiasts rarely use it.
- Electric. The best option is for the drum to be driven by an electric motor. The latter is powered by a battery or the vehicle's electrical system. The load capacity in this version is 4 tons.
- Hydraulic. The design is complex, but it works silently and with great traction force. But such systems are unreliable and expensive. Another drawback is that it is impossible to make a hydraulic drive system yourself.
A simple option made from scrap materials
Some motorists often drive into a field or forest, which may result in problems negotiating difficult areas - mud and sand. The car gets stuck, and you have to puzzle over how to get it out. The simplest hand-made homemade winch can be made in the field.

Do-it-yourself winch, its features and varieties + video
A do-it-yourself winch will always be a wonderful help, both during construction, repairs, and in many other situations that require moving or lifting loads to a height.
A hand-made winch - and Leonardo da Vinci's catapult stops enemies
The brilliant artist, scientist, and inventor is also known as the author of original solutions when creating weapons. Thus, the catapult with a winch made Leonardo famous and was an effective means of deterring enemies. A winch is a machine for moving loads by means of a moving working element (rope, chain). The simplest of them - a gate, a block - have been known since ancient times.
In Russia, winches have been used since the eleventh century in the extraction of brine. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries they were used for drainage, ore mining, and construction work. They are described in the works of M.V. Lomonosov. Theoretically, it is possible to build a winch to the Moon; there have been such fantastic projects. You just need to do the calculations correctly.
Winches, their types and capabilities
If you have ever lifted a bucket of water from a deep well by turning a winch, you already have an idea of how a winch works. A winch is a machine for lifting or moving loads.
It consists of a drum or pulley for the load rope, a drive mechanism with intermediate gears, a braking device and a support frame.
Depending on their purpose, these mechanisms are divided into traction (moving loads horizontally) and lifting.
Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine loading and unloading, construction, repair, warehouse work, car service without these simple and reliable devices, which have been tested over the centuries and are constantly being improved. Along with mechanisms for mooring ships, lifting anchors, winches as part of a large number of machines, a homemade hand winch successfully operates - the best option when building a country house.
A few words about the classification of winches. Depending on the installation method, there are
- stationary,
- portable (placed on a temporary basis),
- mobile (with frames having road rollers).
Based on the type of traction force transmission, a distinction is made between winches with winding drums and winches with friction drums or pulleys. The use of manual or machine drive determines two main types of winches.
Horse-drawn vehicles - oxen or horses - are a thing of the past.
Therefore, if you are not capable of pulling force equivalent to the work of a pair of oxen, your choice is an electric winch installed by yourself.
Manual drive: we rely only on ourselves
Hand winches are often used for various repair work, in individual construction, at bases and in stores selling building materials - in general, where it is necessary to lift or move fairly large loads. A manual winch must have a brake and ratchet stop or a safety handle that combines the functions of a drive handle, stop and brake. This is a guarantee of trouble-free work.
Yes, the winch certainly makes the job easier. But we should not forget that it requires, depending on the operation being performed, certain physical efforts, sometimes quite significant. Only after comparing the volume of work ahead and its severity, do you decide to make a construction winch yourself.
Machine drive - one drum, two drums...
Traditionally, machine-driven winches are used to service simple construction cranes, scrapers, drilling rigs, and in elevators. They can have one, two or three reels. It is possible to use various drives - electric, diesel, pneumatic, steam.
More common are reversible winches, the drum of which is connected to the engine shaft by the gears of the gearbox, less often - friction winches using an appropriate clutch or split friction transmission. Electric winches are equipped with automatic braking systems.
A homemade hand winch is a panacea for a motorist stuck in the forest
A DIY construction winch is a tempting project. Having studied the issue, purchased the necessary parts and components, I hurried to the suburban area, where the walls of my future mansion began to grow. But on the approaches to the farm, my “iron horse” was hopelessly stuck.
As always, attempts to escape from the clutches of the mud backfired. I knew that the only tractor driver, Kostya, had gone to a wedding in another village, and the summer residents had not yet appeared.
The situation is called “Help yourself,” something like how Baron Munchausen pulled himself out of the swamp by his hair.
And I finally pulled out my car. Because I managed to make a hand winch from scrap materials.
Anyone who has a hacienda in these blessed places always has a kit in the trunk in case of emergencies: a crowbar that plays the role of an axis of rotation, a piece of pipe, that is, a drum, well, without a cable, who gets behind the wheel? I have a lever welded to the pipe.
Force, of course, is needed to move a car. But it is still possible. He sweated and turned the pipe. Gradually the cable reeled in and we crawled out of the mud. The golden invention is the winch.
You may ask, how can you make such a winch with your own hands? Everything is very simple.
- First, you should dig a crowbar or a long, strong stick deep enough into the ground. This will be our axis of rotation.
- Then a piece of pipe should be placed on top of this axis. It is more convenient to use a pipe with some kind of recess or welded “ears” to which the cable can be hooked. (You can use an electric pipe cutter or even a hacksaw to cut the desired piece of pipe.)
- We hook one end of a strong cable (sling) to a piece of pipe, and the other end to our cargo (in this case it is a stuck car).
- Using a lever, we begin to wind the cable onto our pipe. It is important to consider two points here: the longer the lever, the less force you will have to exert to achieve the result, but at the same time, working with a very long lever is usually inconvenient. The optimal length will be 70–90 centimeters.
It remains to figure out how the lever will be secured. There are several options: you can weld the lever to the pipe in advance, which is not always convenient; or make a loop from the cable and insert the lever into this loop.
We work without injury, or do not stand under the load
When operating lifting mechanisms, safety rules are of utmost importance. No person should be within the range of the winch.
If for some reason it is difficult to ensure this, it is necessary to appoint an observer who will not allow situations to arise that threaten disaster. The person operating the mechanism must be able to clearly see how the load moves.
Professionals know how important it is to securely secure the winch and check that the rope is wound in the correct direction on the drum. Ideally, the safety margin of the winch should be six times.
If you use a winch to pull the car out, make sure that the cable you use is strong enough and is not damaged. And for insurance, it would be a good idea to throw some old blanket or jacket over the cable that you don’t mind getting dirty. If the cable breaks, this will partially dampen the force with which its pieces will “shoot out,” which can save you from injury.
Do-it-yourself electric winch: are you sure you can handle it?
There is no doubt: those who can have already done it long ago. Understood bearings, gears, sliding and fixed nuts, etc. Such people, first of all, specifically formulate the goal, starting with accurate calculations, diagrams, and sketches.
And the matter is in their hands. But not everyone has such a calling. If you are not one of those who are confident in their abilities, but would like to make an electric winch with their own hands, use the services of a qualified consultant.
And remember that you should also take into account the fact that, without having the suitable parts on hand, you will have to pay a decent amount for a homemade electric winch.
And the amount will be comparable to the cost of buying a good used one.
Then, perhaps, the best way for you is to successfully choose a reliable machine from those available for sale for the planned work, install this mechanism correctly, and study the instruction manual. The choice is yours!

Learn to make your own hand winch
Today, many, sometimes even the simplest, devices are designed to make life easier for a person. One of them is a winch, with which you can easily move objects of large size and weight from point to point.
Let's consider how you can quickly construct such a manual structure with your own hands in your garage, the operation of which does not require an electrical supply.
Option 1. The simplest design
So, our device will be based on the principle of the lever, which in turn is studied in a school physics course. According to the rule, the ratio of lengths in levers is equal to the ratio of forces in them.
In order to assemble the simplest hand winch, it is enough to have a piece of pipe, a rotation axis, a cable and a lever on hand. Its approximate image is shown in the figure below.
First of all, you need to securely fasten the axis to the ground and make something rotate around it (the simplest option is a piece of pipe of a larger diameter).
Then the cable is taken. On one side, our moving object is attached to it, on the other, a loop is made and attached to our axis in such a way that when turning the moving part, the cable is wound. After that, take a lever as long as possible and begin twisting.
Video on making a winch yourself
Option 2. A more advanced homemade hand winch
However, it is not always possible to drag very large and heavy objects with the device described in the first option.
Now we will introduce you to a more advanced version of a hand-made winch; it will work on the basis of a small engine, which will greatly simplify the process of moving cargo (for example, a car).
You need to start work by making a platform. For it you will need to purchase a steel profile and a steel plate with a thickness of 4-5 mm. Below is a drawing of the finished structure.
The easiest way would be to weld the entire structure using a welding machine. If you don’t have a welding machine, you can simply tighten all the elements together with bolts. However, this is done at the discretion of the master.
To avoid problems, we recommend that you immediately check with a square that all angles are correct and do not allow distortions.
If the frame will be welded with a welding machine, we recommend using a triple electrode.
The joints must be processed with a grinding wheel so that there are no scales or sharp parts left that could cause injury. After checking the strength of the manufactured frame, you can begin further work.
Next, a reel is made onto which the cable will be wound. You can make it yourself using two steel plates and several threaded rods. The length of the latter depends on the amount of rope being wound.
It is also worth preparing several tubular bushings that will hide the threaded connection.
On one side of the shaft on which the coil is installed, it is necessary to provide for the presence of an asterisk along which the chain will run. Uniform rotation can be achieved with two hubs, which will be attached to the disks with bolts.
Then you need to find and prepare a small internal combustion engine that will rotate the drum. A second toothed sprocket should be located on its shaft for a chain of smaller diameter. Now you can start assembling the entire mechanism.
All the main elements are installed on the platform (it must be pre-primed and painted to prevent corrosion) and the attachment points are marked using a writing instrument.
In this case, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of tensioning the chain, so it is best to mount the power unit on a slide, under which longitudinal holes are made. Then holes of the required diameter are drilled with a drill.
To make it easier to move the entire structure, it is recommended to provide a removable wheelset. It will be attached to the shank that was provided on the frame. It is also worth providing protection that will securely close the coil.

Homemade ratchet winch
The winch is a mechanism that is widely used in many areas of life. The principle of its operation is to transmit traction force from the drive drum using a flexible element (chain, cable, rope).
Depending on the source of applied force, winches are divided into mechanical and electrical. You can make both of them yourself with a little effort and patience.
Homemade ratchet winch
Quite often there is a need to lift a heavy load and fix it in this position.
This could be, for example, a massive basement lid or large parts of a car.
A homemade ratchet winch will help you cope with such a difficult task..
Most often, a worm mechanism from ZIL - it is the most compact and can support a weight of up to half a ton.
Ratchets from KamAZ and MAZ can withstand weights of up to two tons or more.
This is the most suitable winch option for home use. A solid load capacity will allow you to cope with relatively large loads if necessary. Lifting or dragging them. Let's take a step-by-step look at the entire process of creating a winch from KAMAZ ratchets.
To make a lifting device of this type you will need:
Two rear ratchets of a Kamaz car: left and right
Hooks for towing, 2 pcs.
Cable with a diameter of 4-5 mm.
Fist for releasing brake pads on a Kamaz vehicle
Hook bolt
Step #1
Disassemble the brake ratchets, removing everything from them except the gear, as shown in the photo.
Step #2
Next, cut off the pawl from the expanding fist and, using an angle grinder, popularly called a grinder, cut slots identical to those located on the other side.
The ideal option would be to manufacture such a shaft in a mechanical workshop on a milling machine.
Cutting slots with your own hands will require careful attention to detail and compliance with the rules and regulations for safe handling of power tools.
Step #3
Take covers from an unnecessary used ratchet and make two washers for the future winch.
Step #4
Weld the structure as shown in the photo and drill a hole along the diameter of the cable to fix it.
Step #5
Install the ratchets on the splines, install the bolt and hang the tow hook on it. The structure can be strengthened by putting a bushing on the bolt. I did this using a bushing from an internal combustion engine mount.
Step #6
We install a second towing hook on the free end of the cable.
Step #7
We make and install a handle for easy operation of the winch.
Step #8
Let's test the resulting mechanism. The winch is ready for use.
If you frequently use a homemade ratchet winch, the worm mechanism can quickly fail; in this case, it is better to replace the gears with stronger and more wear-resistant ones.
Homemade electric winch
A homemade electric winch will come in handy in the most difficult situations.
It will help pull your car out of a deep quagmire, saving money.
Its work is based on the principle of using the power of all kinds of devices, such as:
— various engines;
— generators from tractors;
— starters converted for engines.
Interesting! Starter for lawn mowers, here!
Making an electric winch with your own hands is not difficult. You can use it for housekeeping, for example, use it in the process of plowing a personal plot, construction work, as well as in any other operations related to the movement of goods. Let's look at step-by-step instructions for creating this mechanism.
First you need to determine the necessary components:
Electric motor. For a home winch, it is not advisable to use a heavy-duty motor designed for a three-phase network. A small motor with a power of 2.2 kV and a voltage of 220 V is quite sufficient. We offer an electric motor more powerful than in the video. Practice has shown that a device with a power of 1.1 kW cannot cope with plowing. And the 2.2 engine was tested at the dacha.
Electromagnetic starter PM2 16A, remote control, capacitor, wire PVA 3X1.5
Gearbox 1:40.
Pulleys (2 pcs) and a belt for arranging the transmission from the electric motor to the gearbox.
Bearing 180306 in housing (2 pcs).
Drum shaft.
Splined part from the outer grenade (2 pcs).
Hub.
Rolled metal of various thicknesses and sections for the manufacture of frames and drums.
Hardware for mounting the engine, gearbox and drum.
To carry out work on the manufacture of the mechanism, you will need: a mechanic's tool, an angle grinder, a drill and a welding machine.
Kinetic diagram of a winch with an electric motor
Stage No. 1
Before you start making a frame for the unit, you need to sketch a sketch of the future metal structure indicating the dimensions.
To do this, you need to take a sheet of paper and draw a frame, then use a measuring tool to take all installation dimensions and plan the placement of the electric motor, gearbox and drum on the sketch.
The video posted above will make drawing up a drawing easier. Based on the sketch, it will be easier for you to prepare the necessary rolled metal and hardware for the future unit.
Stage No. 2
We weld a common frame from a rectangular pipe, onto which we mount an electric motor and gearbox with installed pulleys and a screwed base made of a profile pipe. To ensure that the belt does not sag, we make the engine platform on canopies, then spot weld the canopies to the frame of the unit, as shown in the photo.
Stage No. 3
We install the gearbox on the corners. We put on the drive belt and check its tension. We weld the base of the gearbox.
Stage No. 4
Let's move on to making the drum. We weld metal washers to the pipe with a diameter of 159 on both sides, as shown in the photo.
Stage No. 5
Next we proceed to welding and assembling the shaft. We weld the splined part of the grenade into the end of the shaft as shown in the photo and insert the shaft inside the drum. We stuff bearings and housings onto the shaft and spot weld the shaft to the drum. We weld the second splined part of the grenade to the gearbox shaft.
Stage No. 6
We align the drum using available means to maintain the alignment of the gearbox shaft and the drum. Next, using a corner, we secure the drum bearing housings with spot welding.
Stage No. 7
We connect the electrical equipment of the winch and do a test run.
Stage No. 8
If the testing was successful, turn off the power supply, remove the electric motor and gearbox and weld the joints. Then we put the winch mechanisms in place. We fix the cable on the drum. On the other side of the cable we install a tow hook. A homemade electric winch is ready.
This mechanism has a fairly large load capacity, but requires time for assembly and lack of humidity.
For safe work with heavy weights, it is advisable to equip the electric winch with a small and simple remote control.
Homemade winch for the farm
All kinds of winches are an indispensable thing for motorists. But a homemade winch for the farm can also be successfully used.
Here, such devices are most often used to move loads along a horizontal surface, for example, heavy logs.
Farmers often use winches by installing them above the attic opening, thus moving loads between different parts of the room.
And some manage to use a homemade winch to plow the land.
To do this, just secure it to the edge of the site, hook the plow to the end of the cable and turn on the winch.
The mechanism pulls the plow, and the person can only give it direction. Using a winch, you can not only plow the ground, but also carry out all cycles of tillage.
We offer a winch for home work, or more precisely for hilling potatoes based on an angle grinder. Almost nothing is needed to make it. We present it as a modification of our winch with an electric motor.
When the engine turned out to be low-power, and I still had a new one, the idea arose to remake the drive. We decided to use an angle grinder. What came out of this is up to you to judge. We will tell you how the modification took place.
Let's start with altering the frame; the engine platform must be adapted to the angle grinder. The canopies and the original appearance of the site remain unchanged. The only thing you need to do is raise it on the frame with the corners to give tension to the belt.
The grinder has threaded holes for attaching handles. It is in them that we insert the bolts to secure the angle grinder to the platform, additionally weld the corner to the platform, as shown in the photo, and secure the electric drive with another bolt.
Then we weld the corners to the frame and raise the platform. We put a pulley on the grinder, put on a belt and carry out a dry test. Next, we carry out full testing on a potato field.
Homemade mechanical winch
In emergency situations on the roads, a homemade mechanical winch will become your indispensable assistant.
It will not take up much space in the trunk of any car and will allow you to solve the problem without involving strangers.
To operate this type of winch, you only need your physical strength. A homemade mechanical winch works on the principle of a lever.
By applying force to the lever, you wind the cable around the axle, and the longer the lever and the greater the physical force applied, the more weight can be moved
A winch helps you cope with numerous complex tasks, so it is desirable for every practical person to have one.
But this does not mean that you need to spend a lot of money to purchase it. The design of the winch is quite simple and allows you to build it from available materials.
You will need:
- a section from a pipe;
- strong cable;
- a strong stick.
A piece of pipe will serve as the basis for such a winch; we attach a cable to it, and make a handle from a stick.
If there are no suitable sticks nearby, take a second piece of pipe and make a handle from it. That's all - a do-it-yourself winch!
When force is applied to the handle, the tube mounted on the axle begins to rotate and wind the cable around itself. The axle must be securely fastened, for example, driven well into the ground.
And this must be done at an angle so that all the elements of the homemade winch do not jump off the axis during operation.
Homemade winches for cars
Today, bad roads, numerous holes and potholes are everywhere, making it difficult for motorists to travel normally.
You can easily get stuck somewhere and hope for help from strangers.
However, it may be delayed, so it is better to have a backup option that does not depend on external factors and assistants. In such situations, a winch can save you.
Not every car is equipped with it, because high-quality winches are quite expensive, and those that are cheaper are short-lived and do not always have enough power to rescue a seriously stuck car.
That is why homemade winches for a car are considered the best option.
Such winches can be either simple and made by hand in a maximum of 30 minutes, or more advanced, but also homemade.

Homemade winches from starters with your own hands: options and principles of operation, tips for assembly and operation
Before setting off, any car enthusiast must make sure that he has taken everything he needs with him. But, if ordinary drivers do not need to take a lot of equipment, then off-road conquerors gather with special zeal.
Any car enthusiast who prefers to drive on the most extreme and difficult sections and roads takes with him the most necessary and necessary equipment that can help and facilitate movement, as well as provide a way out of the most difficult situations.
One piece of equipment that will help the extreme motorist is a winch. An experienced driver who is ready for all the vicissitudes of a road adventure will definitely take this important device with him on the road.
In difficult conditions where there is a high probability that the vehicle will end up in a ditch or get stuck in the mud, a winch will help the driver pull his vehicle out of such road obstacles.
Of course, you can purchase such a device already in the form of a ready-made device, which, of course, is good news. But, if a car enthusiast doesn’t really want to go shopping and spend money on this device, and if he has all the necessary components, he can make a winch himself.
What is a winch for?
A winch will be needed primarily for drivers of off-road vehicles. It is no secret that such cars are used specifically for traveling on those roads where there is no longer urban comfort and asphalt.
Country roads can cause a lot of problems for an unprepared driver. But the presence of a winch can help out and overcome the most difficult sections of the path.
Some off-road vehicle models are already equipped with a winch, which is installed on the front bumper.
If the car is not equipped with such a device, then you can purchase it and install it on your vehicle. But it is quite possible to make a winch with your own hands. Many car enthusiasts already use homemade winches from a starter. By the way, the majority claims that homemade winches are even more reliable than their factory counterparts.
There are several types of such a device. These types differ depending on the energy that drives the actuator. It is impossible to immediately say which of the existing types of winches can be called preferable and best, since they are used in different situations.
Types of homemade winches
As was written just above, there are only three types of winches. They are useful in different situations and also differ in the energy that powers the mechanism. But they are similar in one thing: the principle of operation. It consists of winding a steel cable around a drum. The drum can rotate thanks to a motor gearbox or through the use of its own forces, manually.
Homemade winches for cars can be:
- electrical;
- hydraulic;
- manual.
Hydraulic drive
A hydraulic winch is considered a more complex mechanism, as it has some additional elements, namely: a hydraulic drive, an oil tank and an oil pump. The device itself is quite bulky, so it is more difficult to assemble than other types of devices.
But a hydraulic winch has two big advantages : it consumes less electricity, but at the same time has more power than other mechanisms. Typically, winches of this type are mounted on very cool SUVs, as well as on tractors and walk-behind tractors.
Electric drive
As a rule, an electric winch can be found much more often, since it is the most popular option among craftsmen who assemble these devices by hand. Such high popularity can be explained by the high efficiency and simplicity of the entire design.
As a drive, you can use either an electric motor or a tractor or car generator. The generator should be connected in such a way that it subsequently works like an engine.
If you use a starter in the winch device, the device itself will be more compact.
A very important requirement for an electric drive is that it must have high torque. To prevent the battery from draining too quickly, care must be taken to ensure that the electric drive does not consume too much electricity , but still operates with sufficient power. By the way, this type of homemade winch is easier to build with your own hands.
Mechanical drive
A device with this drive operates on the same operating principle as other design options for this device. The main disadvantage of a mechanical drive is its dimensions - it is quite bulky. By the way, this is the largest drive among other device options.
The main difference between a device using a mechanical drive and other options is that instead of an electric motor, direct physical action is used.
That is, to put the mechanism into action, you will have to make some effort.
In principle, if you use a winch of this type, then you can note its main advantage, which is that such a winch can always be used in the absence of energy sources.
Product design
In order to make a homemade winch, you should first familiarize yourself with the list of main parts that are used for its manufacture. The main elements of do-it-yourself devices include the following parts:
- drum with cable;
- engine;
- gearbox;
- base (chassis).
Before you start assembling, you should prepare everything for this. To begin with, it is recommended to understand all the necessary drawings and electrical diagrams. In this matter, it is better not to rely on your memory or let all the work take its course. Then you need to prepare a workplace and all the tools that will be needed during the work process.
Assembly technology
If a master assembles the entire structure with his own hands, then he will understand it much better than a purchased device. In addition, many car enthusiasts are inclined to believe that homemade winches are of better quality and more reliable. If you assemble such a device from a starter, then the entire procedure will take about an hour, but provided that everything necessary is prepared ahead of time.
The main working unit of the winch is a drum with a cable. If the user already has one, the work will take much less time. But not everyone is the happy owner of such a useful device.
If there is no ready-made drum, you can make it yourself using a thick pipe and sheet metal with a thickness of 3 to 5 mm. The cheeks should simply be welded to the pipe on both sides. The gear is attached to one of them.
This gear will subsequently receive force from the gearbox.
By the way, if there is no ready-made drum, then it can also be made from Zhiguli hubs , which have already served their purpose. This is not very difficult to do. You just need to cook them on the thin side. In order to ensure the alignment of the parts, you need to do this on a mandrel.
When choosing a gearbox for a device, many professional craftsmen recommend taking gearboxes that are used in trolleybuses to open and close doors. If the user is able to obtain such a gearbox, then it is recommended to use it.
But if there is no such device, then you need to make the winch differently, that is, using a starter. It is recommended to use a special starter equipped with a planetary gearbox.
Such a starter is more compact and lighter , which will subsequently be a positive factor.
Homemade winches are usually attached to the front bumpers of cars. But car enthusiasts also use portable versions of such devices.
They are placed in the trunk and taken out if their use is needed in a certain situation. In principle, in any case, you should make the winch as compact as possible.
Bulky devices can cause some inconvenience later on, making them more difficult to use.
Tips for assembly and operation
- When assembling a homemade winch, you should pay close attention to all the details. This will avoid possible unpleasant consequences that may occur due to poor quality design.
- Under no circumstances should you force the assembly process. As they say, if you hurry, you will make people laugh.
It’s better to spend an extra hour to get everything right than to reap the fruits of your haste later.
- You need to pay attention to the switching and installation of electrical wiring. It is recommended to secure the winch control panel away from rotating parts.
This will reduce the risk of injury that may subsequently occur due to negligence or hasty actions.
conclusions
It is believed that homemade winches are less safe than their factory counterparts. In addition, they are in no way suitable for lifting loads. This is due to the fact that such devices do not have a stopper. But one of the main advantages of homemade winches is the fact that if assembled correctly, they can last even longer than factory-assembled winches.
Homemade winches made from starters are more compact, so when choosing an option before assembly, it is better to opt for these devices. The advantages of such winches will be noticed by the user immediately upon use.
