Deciphering Toyota VIN code: nothing could be easier!

Post #4 Decoding the Toyota VIN code: nothing could be easier! — logbook of Toyota Corolla 2012 Corolina on DRIVE2

Every car, regardless of make, model, engine size, etc. has a so-called identification number - VIN code. Toyota cars are no exception. Since 1981, the manufacturer has provided each model coming off the assembly line with such an identification number. Cars for different markets have different VIN codes.

On some cars, this number is located in the upper left part of the dashboard and is visible through the windshield. Some models (for example, Previa) allow you to see the VIN code on the upper right side of the dashboard.

In Liteace, Dyna, Hiace models, this number was painted either on the floor under the driver’s feet or under his seat.

On Toyota Corolla, Camry, Carina II, Celica, Land Cruiser, the VIN code can be seen in the engine compartment, on the front of the body, usually on the left.

Features of Toyota vehicle identification number

The VIN code consists of 17 characters, including both letters and numbers. The first three positions in the issue are reserved for the world manufacturer index - WMI.

A possible manufacturer index for Toyota cars can be JHD, JT1, JT2, JT3, JT4, JT5, JT7, JTA, JTB, JTC, JTD, JTE, JTF, JTG, JTH, JTJ, JTX, JYF, LCU, MR0, SB1 . The decoding of this index is as follows. The first position determines the country of origin.

For example, J stands for Japan, S for Great Britain. The second position indicates the plant where the car was manufactured (T - Toyota). The third position allows you to find out the region in which the car was produced.

For example, “1” stands for Europe, “2” for USA/Canada, “3”, “4”, “8”, “B”, “C” for Gulf countries, “7” for Australia and third world countries , “0” – Taiwan or Singapore.

The fourth and fifth positions in the VIN code allow you to determine the body type of a given Toyota model. The decoding of such designations is quite simple. So, a jeep or minivan with a standard roof is designated as number 11, and with a raised roof as number 12.

If the number 21 or 22 is in 4-5 positions, this is a cargo bus (Hiace) with a standard or raised roof, respectively. A pickup truck (Hilux) or truck (Dyna) with a single cab has the number 31, with a semi-cabin - 32, with a double cab - 33.

Number 41 is a bus (Hiace Commuter, Coaster) with a standard roof, number 42 is a bus with a raised roof, 43 is a bus with a high roof. More traditional bodies begin with number 52.

So, the number 52 means that this car was made in a hatchback body with two doors, 54 - with four doors. For sedans (Corolla), the manufacturer provided the number 53. The coupe is produced under the body number 63, the liftback - 64, and the station wagon - 72.

Detailed information about the model in the VIN code

The sixth position in the Toyota VIN code indicates the engine series. In this case, letter designations are used. If the letter A is in this position, the motor series can be 4A or 7A. In the case of the letter B – series 3B, 11B, 13B, 14B, 15B; C – 1C, 2C, 3C.

You can also decipher the remaining designations E (2E, 3E, 4E, 5E), F(3F), G (1G), H (2H, 12H), J (1JZ, 2JZ), K (5K, 7K), L ( 2L, 3L, 5L), M (5M), P (1HZ), R (22R), S (2S, 3S, 4S, 5S).
The letter designations that appear in the seventh position relate to the manufacturer's model (for example, Corolla).

Decoding this position allows you to obtain the following information. So, under the letter A is “hidden” Supra, the letter B stands for Toyota Coaster. "C" is for Previa and RAV4, "D" is for Mega Cruiser. Under the symbol “E” the C-class sedan Corolla is encrypted. "H" and "K" are reserved for Hiace.

"J" means the model is Land Cruiser. Under the letter L are encrypted Paseo, Tercel, M – Picnic, N – Hilux, P – Starlet, R – Liteace. The T designation is intended for models such as Carina, Corona, Celica, Avensis. The letter U refers to the Dyna 200. The brand's favorite Camry is represented by the letter V.

The remaining designations (W, X, Y) mean models such as MR2, Cressida, Dyna 100, Dyna 150.

The eighth and ninth positions indicate the model code and are written as second ten numbers. For example, letter A = 10, B = 11, C = 12, D = 13, E = 14 (Corolla), F = 15, G = 16, H = 17, J = 18, K = 19, L = 20 , N = 22, etc.

In modern models (for example, the 11th generation Toyota Corolla) some letter designations are not used and N is considered the last character.

This decoding reads as follows: A0 = 100, A1 = 101, B0 = 110, N1 = 221, etc.

As for the 10th position, there is a reserve symbol on it. As a rule, it is not used and is marked with the number 0.

Positions 10 to 17 in the VIN code indicate the production number of the product.

Thus, the VIN code is the identification number of each model of the Toyota manufacturer, which encrypts the necessary information about a specific car (for example, Toyota Corolla). The VIN code allows you to find out the country and region of production, plant, body type and model, engine series and other information.

Decoding vin Toyota Corolla: the most complete information

I am glad to welcome all readers and subscribers! The topic of today's discussion will be the decoding of the Toyota Corolla VIN and everything related to the individual numbering of this car, although most recently we were talking about its main competitor, the Skoda Octavia. Each car model has its own differences in the number, but they all obey a single algorithm.

Read also:  Design and symbols on the Corolla instrument panel

   What information can the VIN number for a Corolla give?

By the way, the algorithm itself was approved by European and American standards at the turn of the 70s and 80s. Since then, it has been used to identify all models of the Toyota concern and other manufacturers.

What does the combination of numbers and letters in the VIN code do? They allow you to obtain more complete and expanded information regarding the Toyota Corolla car, in particular:

  • power unit model;
  • execution option;
  • side of the steering wheel;
  • Manufacturer country;
  • month and year of vehicle production.

   Decryption nuances

In addition, according to experts, there are certain differences in how to decipher the VIN number on these cars produced before the mid-90s and after. Now let’s learn more about what information the Corolla identification code may contain and why it is unique.

   Decoding VIN TOYOTA for the European market

The symbol from 1 to 3 of the VIN number shows the world index of the automaker. Next, I will give the designations of all the regions where the Toyota Corolla car was produced and is being produced:

Positions 4 to 5 – specifies the car body type (manufactured before 2002):

The 4th symbol for cars produced before 2002 indicates the body type and wheel arrangement:

The 5th character of the VIN number on a Corolla newer than 2002 specifies the engine:

The 6th position indicates the engine or its series (vehicles manufactured before 2002):

The 7th position of the VIN (If your Corolla was manufactured before 2002) should contain the letter E or T.

The 7th character indicates the presence of passive safety systems (If your Corolla was produced after 2002):

In the 8th position of a car older than 2002 there should be either the Latin letter E (Auris or Corolla) or R (Corolla Verso).

Position 9 of the VIN code is a check digit.

In the 10th position, if a car before 2002 there is a reserve symbol (usually 0), if after, then the model year:

The 11th character specifies the plant where the car was assembled (only for cars from 2002):

The serial number on vehicles manufactured before 2002 is encrypted in numbers from 11 to 17, after which from 12 to 17.

   Decoding the Toyota VIN code for the North American market

We have already discussed positions 1 to 3 above (see VIN decoding for the European market).

In 4th place in the VIN code for cars produced from 1983 to 1995, the engine is indicated:

The 4th character of the number can indicate the body type and wheel arrangement of a car produced after 1996:

In the 5th place in the VIN code, provided that the car was manufactured before 1996, there should be the letter E, indicating that this is a Corolla / FX.

The 5th character in the number is the engine (since 1996):

In 6th place in the VIN of Corollas produced from 1983 to 1990 there were characters 8 or 9, and from 1990 to 1995 0 or 9.

   Where to find the number and how to choose paint for your car

The most important thing left is to find out the specific location where the described identification number is located. If we talk specifically about the Toyota Corolla, it is located in front of the body in the engine compartment, that is, in the engine compartment.

And the engine number for gasoline engines is located on the left, on the cylinder block. For diesel units, it is in the middle of the intake manifold pipe. In the engine compartment you should also look for a nameplate that duplicates the VIN number.

Its location is in front and to the left, in the engine compartment.

Another popular search is Toyota Corolla paint number. This information is also contained on the nameplate. For different generations of these cars, a corresponding coding of paint colors was provided.

You can use special applications that will ask you to indicate the car model, then the year of its manufacture.

After specifying all this information, the owner is asked to familiarize himself with a plate in which the names of the colors and their corresponding alphanumeric encoding are placed.

With this, dear readers, my review for today has come to an end. In subsequent issues we will introduce you to the location of VIN codes for other popular brands and models of cars (for example, Subaru and Suzuki). See you soon!

Sincerely, blog author Andrey Kulpanov
