changing engine oil

One of the most frequent and discussed questions. What kind of oil to pour into the engine and gearbox of your car. Someone bought a car second-hand and forgot to ask the previous owner what kind of oil was used, or the brand of oil is known, but there are doubts about whether it was selected correctly. Another option is the desire to choose an oil with the necessary characteristics, but at a lower price.

In this article we will try to answer which oil to use to replace the engine and gearbox of a Toyota Corolla. The two most popular modifications at the moment will be considered: Corolla X (E150), produced from 2006 to 2013, and Corolla IX (E120/130), produced from 2000 to 2007.

How often should you change the oil in a Toyota Corolla?

Engine oil must be changed at every service.
The recommended periodic maintenance interval for a Toyota vehicle is every 10,000 km or once every 12 months, whichever comes first.

How much oil does the engine need?

According to the passport, 1.4 and 1.6 engines with filter replacement include 4.2 liters of oil.
This is the volume that is poured into an empty engine at the factory. During scheduled maintenance, 4 liters should be enough, since the oil is not completely drained. However, it is better to buy a 5 liter or 4+1 liter canister; topping up may be required.

Engine oil for Corolla X (E150)

Engine oil that can be used in the most common engines: 1.6 liters with a capacity of 124 l/s, marking – 1ZR-FE.

The 1.4 liter 4ZZ-FE engine remains unchanged from the previous generation and will be considered when selecting Corolla IX aphid oil.

Toyota recommends using original Toyota Genuine Motor Oil lubricants (who doubts it) or similar ones. The viscosity of the oil used is selected depending on the operating conditions.

Preference is given to Toyota 0W-20 oil; SAE oils can also be used: 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30.

Original Toyota motor oils

The table shows that it is advisable to use one of two oils:

1. Toyota SN 0W-20, because it is preferred by the manufacturer himself

2. Toyota SN 5W-30, the most affordable and meets all requirements.

Both oils are sold in metal cans, which provides additional protection against counterfeiting. A deficiency of oil may include a low alkaline number, which indicates that the oil has little resistance to oxidation and quickly loses its properties. This process is accelerated when low-quality fuel is used. The oil reaches its service life after 5-6 thousand kilometers.

In addition to original oils, no one prohibits the use of oils from other manufacturers that meet Toyota requirements.

Engine and transmission oils for Toyota Corolla

Toyota Corolla holds the record for the number of copies produced among all car models - more than 40 million Corollas of eleven generations rolled off the assembly line. The Corolla has been in production since 1966 and was initially introduced only to the Japanese market. Over time, the model became global and gained popularity all over the world, mainly due to its reliability.

Changing the oil in a Toyota Corolla must be carried out in accordance with the instructions in the operating instructions. What kind of oil to pour into the Toyota Corolla engine depends on the year of manufacture of the car and the type of engine.

Toyota Corolla with gasoline engines up to the ninth generation inclusive (until 2008)

Motor oils of ACEA A3/B4 and API SL standards are suitable for these vehicles. TOTAL specialists recommend TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 5W40 and TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 ENERGY 0W30, which meet these specifications.

These oils reliably protect the engine from wear under any conditions, including during low-temperature starts, and, due to their high oxidation resistance, can be used with an extended replacement interval (see the operating instructions for your car).

Both oils are also suitable for Corolla and Auris 10th generation with a 1.6 Valvematic Dual VVT-i petrol engine.

Engine oil for Toyota Corolla

The automaker of the Toyota Corolla brand recommends the use of original synthetic oils from the manufacturer Castrol Mobile and many other well-known manufacturers.

But today, branded car services do not recommend using European quality products.

To figure out who to give preference to, first you need to consider Japanese products specifically for the Toyota Corolla brand.

Japanese oil is produced under the name “Toyota”, in most cases it is used in the domestic market. Exxon Mobil is the primary manufacturer that cooperates and refills oil spills through a contract system with Toyota Corporation.

There are many brands, which in turn are produced at the same plant. For each type, a different manufacturing recipe is used.

Before the development of motor oils for Toyota Corolla, numerous scientific works were carried out. This was necessary for an impeccable performance, taking into account the characteristics of different types of engines.

All products of these brands have energy-saving properties and excellent quality.

Japanese motor oils for Toyota Corolla and their features

In order to come to a choice of which product to pour into the car engine, it is necessary to study the benefits of all types of oils. Toyota Corolla engine products can perform 4 functions:

  1. Original Toyota brand products contain additives that are attached to metal parts of various types of installations. If you still use the material for Toyota Corolla, the result will be excellent. The car will not overheat, the parts will slide easily.
  2. The brand for Toyota Corolla promotes reliable sealing of cylinders that have micro-gaps. Allows you to maintain compression, which helps the engine not lose power.
  3. Another advantage is the removal of excess heat from the hot zone, which is located in the engine part, dissipating it in the radiator area.
  4. Toyota motor oil contains so-called detergent additives. They are able to clean engine parts, preventing formations that arise at high temperatures.

Toyota brand motor oil has distinctive features. It contains more than seventy mineral substances, which in turn are responsible for its highest quality.

It should also be noted that these Toyota Engine Oil products have several degrees of viscosity: OW-20, OW-30, 5W-30, 5W-40.

OW-20 products have excellent performance characteristics that are suitable specifically for our Russian climate.

How often should you change engine oil for the Toyota Corolla brand?

It is necessary to change the engine oil at intervals of about ten thousand kilometers of the vehicle. But most often, car owners change their engine oil at five thousand.

To properly change engine oil, it is necessary to use a vessel into which waste residues will be drained. It should hold four liters. You will also need rubber gloves to prevent your hands from getting burned due to the high temperature of the oil. In order to unscrew the oil filter, you will need a strap wrench.

The process of changing engine oil for Toyota Corolla:

  1. It is necessary to park the car in a pit. Distribute the necessary tools so that they are at hand.
  2. If the car has not been started, then warm it up. This is necessary so that the oil liquid warms up and becomes more liquid.
  3. Next, turn off the car if the engine is warm.
  4. Take the vessel and place it under the drain.
  5. Unscrew the drain plug. The contents will spill out.
  6. Take a funnel and place it in the oil fill hole. It is necessary to fill gradually.
  7. After this, check the fill level using the dipstick.

The best engine oil for Toyota Corolla

Are you planning to choose the best oil for your Toyota Corolla? Well, in this case, we are ready to help you - we will list several common brands today that really deserve respect.

Japanese quality? Eneos

It is logical to assume that owners of Japanese cars will select Japanese oil - for example, Eneos. What is this oil?

First of all, don’t pay too much attention to stickers and fancy packaging - all these products can be delivered to any part of the planet without any problems. There are also rumors that Eneos is not officially supplied to Russia and that the consumer is offered an outright counterfeit product.

Most new Toyotas use Eneos as the base engine oil. The distinctive ability of this oil is its ability to burn away in truly record time. There seem to be no anti-carbon components here; as practice has shown, the manufacturer saves on everything possible.

Eneos is frankly unpopular and if you bought a Toyota Corolla with this base oil in the transmission, it needs to be changed as quickly as possible.

French technology – Elf

Elf motor oil is produced in France and is officially supplied to our country. However, reviews about motor oil clearly show that there is no point in looking for discouraging results or new sets of additives here.

Let's turn to independent researchers and expert opinion. Practice has shown that the result of surface running-in and wear temperature of motor oil is at a very mediocre level. When using Elf oil, we recommend changing it more often - the composition ages very quickly and you can easily find large pieces of burnt in the used oil, which is very bad for the engine.

Domestic oil for Toyota Corolla

Is Hado what you need? The oil comes from Ukraine; the manufacturer claims a set of unique additives that can restore worn parts. But is this really so?

We conducted live testing of Hado oil on the engine of a new Toyota Corolla. We dare to assure you that there is nothing innovative here - a restorative film is not formed, and we also did not find a unique coating.

However, despite the absence of a “miracle” declared by the manufacturer, reviews about the oil are quite good. Studying the information presented on the forums, we can say that Hado is superior to the advertised brands Esso, Castrol and Elf. You will immediately notice positive dynamics in the Toyota Corolla engine when using Hado oil, but you should not expect miracles.

Synthetics - ZIC XQ Fully Synthetic

Continuing the topic of choosing the best engine oil for Toyota Corolla, let's say a few words about ZIC XQ. As the manufacturer itself states, this is a synthetic engine intended for use in urban small cars and SUVs.

ZIC XQ is produced on the basis of high-quality motor oil with an additive package from Infinium. The use of the popular VHVI technology is also stated; minimal wear of the composition is guaranteed. In other words, advertising convinces us that engine oil can operate with an extended replacement interval.

The main difference between ZIC XQ and other nominees is its universal additive system, which allows fuel economy and has an increased reliability life. All-season use of oil in the Toyota Corolla engine is possible.

What's the end result?

In comparison with other nominated nominees, synthetics from ZIC turned out to be almost head and shoulders above – and in all respects. First of all, kinematic viscosity - during the process its level is very insignificant, only half a percent. Waste consumption is also minimal - according to the results of tests, its level was 0.5 liters per 15,000 kilometers.

The pour point of the oil is significantly lower than that of competitors. At the beginning and end of the test, -57 and -55 degrees, respectively. Let's give a live comparison - the vaunted Elf froze already at a temperature of -35 degrees Celsius.

We have conducted for you a comparative analysis of the most popular, common motor oils among Toyota Corolla owners. The results were unexpected - the most advertised and widespread brands showed very mediocre characteristics.

But on the contrary, oils for which there were no special hopes were pleased with their unique properties and stable behavior.

We recommend not paying attention to bright commercials and beautiful packaging, but when choosing, focus on our material and compare not only the characteristics declared by the manufacturer, but also real reviews from owners.

What kind of oil should I put in the engine?

A car's engine is its heart, and in order for it to work reliably and for a long time, it needs to be given due attention.

Therefore, every driver tries to fill only high-quality motor oil into the engine of his car.

Neglecting this factor sometimes leads to irreversible consequences. But how to choose motor oil yourself, what parameters of this product should you pay primary attention to?

As a result of long debates about which oil is better to fill - mineral water, synthetics or even semi-synthetics, there is one general conclusion - oil is largely a matter of taste. But there are several factors to consider.

Step one - find out the manufacturer's recommendations

And in fact, you need to start choosing oil by carefully studying the service book for your car .
It is there that it is written what kind of oil the manufacturer recommends pouring into the engine and the recommended oil viscosity.

Step two - what was filled in first?

An important factor is the wear of the engine and what kind of oil was poured into it before. So, for example, if mineral oil was present in the engine for several years, the resulting cracks in the rubber were gradually filled with deposits, which were not washed out when the oil was changed.

And if synthetic oil is poured into such an engine, it, due to its washing out and acidic characteristics (which are higher than those of mineral water), will wash away everything, including “useful” deposits.

That’s why there are often cases when, when switching from mineral water to synthetics, oil rushes out through the washed holes.

Compromise between mineral and synthetic oil: semi-synthetic. By the way, the concept of semi-synthetics exists only in Russia.

Often hydrocracking oils are called semi-synthetics - i.e. oils obtained from mineral oil by chemical hydrocracking to improve performance. Semi-synthetics compare favorably with synthetics primarily in price.

In addition, for an engine that has always been filled with mineral oil, the choice between synthetic and semi-synthetic will not be very critical (if the oil is of good quality, of course).

How to choose an oil with the desired viscosity index?

One of the main properties of motor oil is its viscosity and its dependence on temperature over a wide range (from ambient air temperature at the time of cold start in winter to maximum load temperature in summer).

The most complete description of the compliance of the viscosity-temperature properties of oils with engine requirements is contained in the internationally accepted classification SAE J300.

It divides motor oils into six winter (OW, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W and 25W) and five summer (20, 30, 40, 50 and 60) viscosity classes.

All-season oils are designated by a double number, the first of which indicates the minimum values of the dynamic viscosity of the oil at low temperatures and guarantees starting properties, and the second determines the range of kinematic viscosity at 100°C and dynamic viscosity at 150°C, characteristic of the corresponding viscosity class of summer oil.

The test methods included in the assessment of oil properties according to SAE J300 provide the consumer with information about the maximum oil temperature at which the engine can be cranked by the starter and the oil pump pumps oil under pressure during a cold start in a mode that does not allow dry friction in friction units.

Approximate correspondence between oil designation and operating temperature range for some all-season oils.

High viscosity indices - 50 and 60 - either for highly accelerated engines or for engines with mileage over 100,000.

Synthetics and, in general, any too thin oil in heavily worn engines can cause various seals to “run.” In addition, in such engines it is not always able to provide the required pressure.

When and how to change engine oil?

The advice is common to everyone: first of all, you need to pour good oil. That is, its quality should not raise suspicion.

It is best to pour oil into your car from well-known manufacturers, at authorized stations, where they will definitely not fill you with counterfeit oil (unfortunately, oil is counterfeited quite often).

There are no clear recipes for timing oil changes. For normal conditions, it is recommended to change the oil every 10 thousand km, but since operating conditions in Russia are generally recognized as severe, it is better to change the oil every 7-8 thousand km.

Diesel and turbocharged engines may require more frequent oil changes, every 5 thousand km. Along with the oil, be sure to change the oil filter.

Do I need to flush the engine when changing the oil?

100 percent engine flushing when changing the oil is a controversial issue. You need to flush the engine if you are changing the oil for the first time (especially if you don’t know what kind of oil was filled in previously); if you switch from one type of oil to another; if you change the brand of oil; if the engine is dirty.

In other cases (during periodic oil changes), opinions are divided: some say that it is necessary to flush, others say the opposite.

Manufacturers of Japanese cars recommend flushing the engine every 40 thousand km.

How to choose the best engine oil for a Toyota engine

Car oils for Toyota Avensis

If we are talking about gasoline units, the manufacturer recommends using Toyota Motor Oil motor lubricants. If they are not available, it is necessary to use substances of similar composition.

Basic requirements for lubricants:

  • off-season lubricants confirmed by ILSAC certification;
  • with classes SM, SL according to API and the designation “Energy” on the container, the viscosity level should be 0w20, 5w30, 5w20, 10w30;
  • off-season, corresponding to class SM, SL and API standards with viscosity grades 20w50 and 15w40.

According to the performance characteristics of Avensis, MM with 0w20 class has a positive effect on fuel consumption and quick starting in cold weather.

In its absence, it is recommended to use oils with a viscosity of 5w30, but until the next change to 0w20.

In a situation where the car owner uses motor oils with a higher viscosity level, the engine will consume more fuel and take much longer to start. Therefore, it is better not to use oils with a viscosity of 10w30 in Toyota Avensis.

As for diesel engines on Avensis, you should focus on the engine model. 1ADFTV power units require the use of two types of lubricants.

In the case of using fuel with a high sulfur content, it is necessary to fill in MM according to class B1 ACEA. Lubricant groups CF, CF4 or CD, CE according to API classification. Viscosity parameters are used according to climatic conditions.

It is best to use MM 5w30 to ensure fuel economy and quick engine starting. As for 15w40, 10w30 oils, they must be used at temperature conditions above -20°C.

It is also applicable when the fuel sulfur content does not exceed 50% per 1,000,000 particles, with ACEA class B1 or C2. Lubricant groups CF4, CE, CD according to API standards.

Motor lubricants for Toyota Camry 40

Japanese car manufacturers pay close attention to the consumable components specified in the operating instructions and the main parameters of the lubricant product.

Every car enthusiast chooses a lubricant for summer or winter, taking into account the basic requirements from the manufacturer. Otherwise, the internal combustion engine may quickly fail.

Therefore, it is necessary to analyze in more detail the main parameters of recommended lubricants for Camry 40.

Any fluids for Toyota Camry must comply with the instructions and characteristics:

  • all-season Toyota Motor Oil oils or similar options from foreign manufacturers with a certain level of viscosity and fluidity;
  • International API standards require the use of liquids with classes SM, SL. SAE viscosity parameters should be 15w40 or 20w50 at temperatures greater than -12°

According to the accepted API classification, liquids are SM, SL indicating Energy, or off-season lubricants according to the ILSAC standard. If the temperature reading is more than -18°C, then 10w30 or 5w30 can be used.

For gasoline engines, manufacturers recommend using original Motor Oil lubricants. You can also fill in alternative types of oils with a high level of quality and the corresponding classification of the manufacturer.

Primary requirements:

  • all-season fluids for power devices according to ILSAC certification;
  • high-quality lubricants with API class SM, SL and Energy Oil indication for fuel energy saving, recommended viscosity classes: 0w20, 10w30, 5w30;
  • all-season lubricants with class SM, SL and API standards, viscosity level 20w50 and 15w40.

Recommended viscosity level for Avensis

According to the car's factory performance, MM 0w20 is one of the most effective when interacting with the engine. It reduces fuel consumption due to the low fluidity of the main fluid.

As an alternative, it is recommended to use compounds with a viscosity class of SAE 5w30 or fill in lubricants 10w30 subject to temperature conditions.

However, they contribute to high gas consumption and difficult engine intake.

Diesel-based power engines require the use of several variations of motor lubricants. If the Camry uses low quality fuel, then it is necessary to select oils of group B1 according to the ACEA standard and class CF.

Filling a diesel engine involves using a denser oil with a viscosity rating of 5w30. It provides fuel economy and reliable protection of the internal combustion engine system. The oil must correspond to class C2 or B1 according to the accepted ACEA classification and belong to the CF lubricant group.

By following the recommendations for oil approval for Toyota cars, every car owner will be able to protect the main mechanism of the system and extend its operation for a long time.
