Starting the car without a key

How to start a car without a key?

Starting the car without a key

In life, various even the most unforeseen situations happen and you need to be prepared to emerge victorious. And although it seems that it is impossible to start a car without the keys, this is not so.

This situation is especially annoying when you urgently need to go, and there is no time to look for a spare set of keys.

It is worth noting that only those drivers who are well versed in their car can use these methods.

Option 1

To do this, you need to remove the protective casing from the bullet column of the car and find the wires that relate to the ignition switch.

If your car was manufactured before the 2000s, then the ignition switch has three wires. It is important to figure out which of them is responsible for grounding. To do this, you should have a tester at hand.

When you find a wire above which the tester shows zero, this will be the ground wire.

It must be insulated, and the other two wires must also be short-circuited; when the engine starts, they will also need to be insulated.

If the car was produced in the 2000s and later, then the number of wires will be much greater, because the options for key positions in the lock on modern models are many times greater than the standard ones - on and off.

Just as in the first case, you need to find the ground wires one by one in each three of the wires, and then they are combined with each other and after the engine starts working, they must be isolated one by one from each other.

Option 2

This method can only be applied to cars that were produced in the 60s and 70s. You need to do the following:

  • Using a drill, drill a hole a couple of centimeters higher than the lock is located. The depth of the hole must correspond to the length of the key. Using this method, the pulley that holds the lock is cut.
  • Next we take out the lock cylinder in the steering column of the casing. We find a recess, insert a screwdriver into it and try to turn it, after which the car should start. Keep in mind that this is an extreme measure, and after this you cannot use the ignition switch as usual; it must be completely replaced.

Option 3

This option is acceptable for vehicles without automatic ignition interlock. To use it, you need to connect the wires coming from the distributor with the positive sign of the battery. After that we start the car.

Depending on the type of your car, you can, as a last resort, start an iron horse to get to the nearest service station if there is no other way to deal with the problem.

How to start a car without a key yourself

Cars May 10, 2013

Every car enthusiast should be prepared for all sorts of breakdowns and other unexpected nuances, regardless of the make, condition and year of manufacture of his car. Take, for example, a situation where you, having gone into nature or found yourself far from home, accidentally lost or broke the ignition key. Such cases, as practice shows, are not at all uncommon.

So, how to start a car without a key? It would be ideal if you had a multitester at hand, but otherwise a regular flashlight bulb will do. A key inserted into the ignition can have three states: power on and off, as well as supply to the starter.

Based on this, you need to find three groups of wires. The first are those that carry power from the battery, the second give it to the car if they are connected to the first, and the third - to the starter when connected to the first. Usually the second and third groups exist in the form of a single wire, so it will not be too difficult to figure out how to start the car without a key.

So, the power is mainly supplied by the thickest and brightest wire, in some cases there are several of them. Ground connections are usually black or green. If the power is a bundle, then we check each wiring included in it with a multitester, and if there is none, we short-circuit it for a short time with a minus and check whether there are sparks.

Have you checked? We continue to figure out how to start a car without a key. Now all those wires that give a spark and the minus need to be separated. To find the one that supplies power to the starter, you need to put the car in neutral and use the handbrake. Next, we check the rest of the wiring by connecting to power until the starter starts working.

Next, to start the car without a key, we connect the power and ground, securing them with electrical tape. Those wires that supply power to the starter are connected to the rest of the wiring until the engine starts, after which the power must be removed.

If you need to open the car, you can try to do it with a wire hook.

You need to find a regular wire and bend it into the desired shape at an angle of approximately 450, the bent part should be no longer than 10 cm.

Next, we push it between the glass and the window seal near the handle, trying to hook the rod with the button and lift it up. This type of opening of car doors is ideal for domestic models.

The second option requires a loop of rope or fishing line. But it is only suitable if the button in the door has an upward projection.

There is also an option with a wire hook for imported cars. The hook must be inserted inside the door by hooking and pulling the handle. You can insert the wire if you bend the corner of the door with tools or improvised means.

If the battery is discharged and the central locking on the alarm cannot open the door, you can use the lock cable in the hood, hooking it with something and sharply pulling it towards you. If possible, you can connect the power using another battery by connecting the wires to the vehicle ground and the starter.

And, of course, the easiest way is to break glass, if the weather permits.

Now, having the knowledge of how to start a car without a key and how to open doors, it’s not so scary to get into such unpleasant situations.

How to start a car without a key?

Starting the car without a key

Remove the steering column cover. The wires leading to the ignition switch will be visible. Disconnect the wires from the ignition switch using any convenient method. It is necessary to determine the wires going to the battery, to the car starter, to the power circuit of the devices and the wire that provides grounding.

Determine grounding. Usually this is a black or green wire. To check, connect the wire through the tester to the car body. The instrument needle is in the zero position. Therefore, this is “earth”. Once identified, it is advisable to insulate the end of this wire, since accidental connection to the power wires may damage the vehicle's wiring.

Identify the power wire(s). Most often it is a thick wire of yellow or red color. Sometimes there are several power wires. In this case, you need to find them all. Determining the power wires comes down to determining the voltage relative to ground. Using a tester.

You can lose your keys at any time, but what if you are away from home and there is no way to go get a spare set? The answer is simple - try to start the car in other ways. But automakers deliberately put all electrical wiring away so that it is difficult to access.

The steering column is equipped with devices that ensure the safety of the car - it is almost impossible to start it without a key. However, if you look at cars that were produced before the mid-90s, you can see that such safety measures were not applied to them.

Knowing small tricks, you can start the engine without a key.

Please note that when working with the vehicle's electrical wiring, you should be careful not to short-circuit the power wires. In the best case, the fuses will burn out, in the worst case, the insulating layer of the wires will melt. Look carefully at the color markings and try to follow all instructions and recommendations. And start it.

Find out how to start a car without a key - proven methods

Starting a car without a key is a difficult task, but it is quite doable, as can be seen from police reports on thefts.

Even the most inaccessible cars disappear under the cover of darkness in an unknown direction and cannot be found for a long time.

Let’s say right away that you need to train exclusively in your own car, and not in your neighbor’s or any other car you like - look through the criminal code to find out how such jokes can later turn out.

Let’s imagine the most banal situation: you forgot your keys at home or lost them, what should you do?

First of all, you need to get into the car. We have already told you how to open a door without a key. Don't forget to remove the terminal from the alarm system so that your neighbors don't accidentally call the police. Then you can proceed in several ways.

The first step is to unscrew the steering column cover, this way you will have access to the ignition switch. Attached to the castle.

How to start a car without a key and without problems

We have all seen more than once how in dashing action films the main character starts a car without a key by connecting a couple of wires. Of course, it is possible that a similar situation can happen in life, and it is not necessary to steal a car or participate in a chase.

The ignition key may simply be lost or broken during a sudden jerk in the socket. Repairs have their time, but for now you need to somehow start the car without a key. So how to do this? We're not action heroes, so we don't need to rush.

Step by step turning on the ignition of a car without a key looks something like this for all car models:

First, you need to carefully get your hands on the wires, which will require removing the protective cover from under the steering wheel. Once this operation is completed, you will see a set of multi-colored wires leading to the ignition switch. You need to separate the wires from the lock in any way that is most convenient for you. Having done this, determine the affiliation.

So, you have a car, you want to start it, but there is no key... A logical question arises: what to do? The answer is extremely simple: start the car without a key!

We won’t go into detail about how this happened and why – not here and not now. One thing can only be said – anything can happen in life! And since there are no hopeless situations (some argue that even if you are eaten, you still have at least two options), then this situation is completely solvable.

It should be noted that this article does not guarantee the success of the operation and only describes one of the possible solutions to such a problem. And most importantly, you need to be extremely careful and careful, since all responsibility for burned wiring, in case of incorrect actions, will fall on the person whose hands it was done.

Egnition lock

First you need to remove the plastic steering column cover and...

If your car key is lost, starting your car without a key is not as difficult as it seems - there are plenty of ways to start the engine without a key.

All of the following methods for starting an engine without an ignition key were tested on a VAZ classic.

Neutralizing the steering lock

The ignition switch, of course, will suffer. But there is no other way out.

Turn the steering wheel half a turn left or right until the lock clicks. Rock the steering wheel left and right. Is there a little play? And, due to the design features, it cannot but exist.

We move the steering wheel to the left all the way and, with all our strength, sharply pull the steering wheel to the right. Left-handers can perform this procedure exactly the opposite way.

It won't always work on the first try. But from the fifth or sixth, when the sporting anger increases, the lock will break off with a bang and the steering wheel will unlock.

We start the engine. Method one

Open the hood. We use a piece of wire to connect the distributor wire to the positive terminal.

Anything can happen in life, sometimes you need to start a car without keys. Of course, not the way it happens with the heroes of modern action films - a chase, shooting, a beauty in the passenger seat.

The reasons for this can be the most trivial: the loss of the car ignition keys, the key may break, the ignition switch is damaged, but you have to drive, and God forbid, far from home.

This article is intended specifically for such cases.

The simplest and most effective method is used to bring domestic classics into combat readiness. Remove the cover under the steering column so that you can get to the ignition switch. You disassemble the lock itself, take out the lock cylinder and turn it into working condition to close the starter. Of course, the ignition switch will be damaged, but then either drive on or wait for a repair team.

Disassembled ignition switch

In some cases, the steering lock is triggered, then you will have to tug the steering wheel quite hard to neutralize it.

You've probably seen more than once, while watching another action-packed film, how the main character gets behind the wheel of a car without keys, pulls out a bunch of wires from under it, connects something to something else, the car starts, and he drives away.

In fact, a similar situation can happen in everyday life, without any action, chases or other cinematic elements.

At any moment, the human factor and the ignition key can come into play; you can simply take it and lose it or break it with a sharp jerk in the door lock or ignition socket, which in itself is quite unpleasant, as it will require expensive repairs and replacement of locks on all doors and the steering column mechanism.

So how can you repeat the trick from the movie and how to start it without the ignition key?

To do this, first of all, you need to carefully get to the wires, which will require removing the protective cover located under the steering wheel.

After the protection is removed, you will be able to see multi-colored wires running to the system lock.

The need to start a car without a key can arise quite often in our lives. Of course, we are not talking about illegal actions. In the daily life of a driver, different situations happen - the ignition key breaks or is lost, the lock fails, the integrity or correct connection of the electrical wiring is disrupted.

All these cases make us remember how the heroes of Hollywood films famously jump into any car, take out a whole set of wires from under the panel, connect red with green or yellow and calmly drive away. But in life everything is not so simple.

Precautions - what to do before starting the engine

Before we tell you how to start a car without a key, we consider it necessary to warn the reader about the possible consequences. First, keep in mind that not every car can be started without using the ignition key. Modern cars use a keyless entry system and push-button engine start. Get inside and...

How to start a car without a key is a question that may arise from a car owner who has lost the keys to his car, and this happens, as always, at the most inopportune moment.

This article will give recommendations on the sequence of actions on how not to spoil anything and start the engine of your car without having the ignition key in order to be able to get to the garage or car service center.

To begin with, it should be noted that the older the year of manufacture of the car, the easier it is to start its engine without a key. And vice versa, the newer the car by year of manufacture, the more electronic components and all kinds of electronic locks it contains, and the more difficult it is to start its engine without having the original ignition key.

Therefore, owners of the latest foreign cars, stuffed with electronics, should take care of the standard keys with special care, especially if there is no duplicate. And if you don’t have a duplicate (spare key), which is usually included with a new car, then you should definitely buy one.

There are a couple of proven ways to start a car without a key. One of them is to try to neutralize the steering lock. Of course, the ignition switch will suffer, but when there is no other choice, it’s worth taking advantage of.

So, you need to rotate the steering wheel left and right until the lock clicks. Shake the steering wheel. Pull it all the way to the side, and then sharply pull it in the other direction. It may not work out right away, however.

But then the lock will break off, which will lead to the steering wheel being unlocked. Another way to start a car without a key is to work on the engine. You need to open the hood. Then, using a piece of wire, connect the toggle switch wire to the positive terminal of the battery.

The ignition is turned on. Using a thicker piece, briefly connect the terminal on the starter to the positive terminal of the battery.

If you don’t want to use such radical methods, you need to get to the wires as carefully as possible. This will require removing the one located under the steering wheel.

Unfortunately, this happens. We got into the car and discovered that the ignition key was lost. Or another unpleasant option - the key broke in the lock. How to start a car without a key?

Yesterday I went to university to study. I parked the car in the parking lot, locked it and left. After a couple of hours I was free and decided to go home (which is natural).

Approaching the car, I discovered that I did not have the ignition key (apparently it had fallen off the ring on which the keys were strung somewhere)!
At first I tried to find the key by carefully checking the path I was following, but... to no avail 🙁 Thank God that I know how the ignition switch works! Having unscrewed the plastic steering wheel cover, I took the lock out of the socket where it was located, and, going to the store for matches (for remelting the wiring, which was lying in the trunk on purpose), I connected the input positive wire to the ignition terminal. My mass is switched off from the cabin, so I was not afraid that the coil might “explode”. Then, turning on the ground, I shorted the wire going to the starter with the main one and... oh yes! It started up :-) Such a simple design turned out to be very reliable, and I calmly drove home without any problems. What is noteworthy: I spent about 15 minutes poking around with.

In the life of a motorist, many different troubles happen, one of which is the loss of a single set of keys. Of course, this doesn't happen every day. However, additional knowledge on starting the engine without the original key will not be superfluous. How to start a car without a key? The answer to this question is further in our article.

How to start a car without a key (including VAZ-2109)? Method No. 1

How to start a car without a key using a VAZ as an example

Sometimes unforeseen situations happen in life and any driver can be left without the keys to their car. And such incidents most often occur in nature or in the country. And in order to get to a car service center to replace all the car’s locks, you will first have to start it without a key.

Many modern cars are designed in such a way that they cannot be started without a key. They are equipped with numerous protective mechanisms that can block the steering wheel and starter. Computer chips in the ignition switch will also prevent you from using the vehicle without a key.

Most modern cars cannot be started without a key.

Even knowing how to start a car without a key, only those who own cars produced in the 80s and 90s, and in particular the VAZ 2106 or other models of this automaker, will be able to take advantage of this opportunity.

To begin with, the steering column cover is removed in the cabin. As a rule, it is attached with just a few screws. By removing this part, you will have access to the ignition switch and all the wires coming from the starter and battery, as well as the ground cord.

The main task is to determine the right one and connect it with the other.

Most often, the ground wire is painted green or black. Of course, we will not determine the type of this or that cord “at random”, since there is a risk of short-circuiting the entire on-board system of the car.

You can find out whether a given wire is grounding using a tester. If the cord is connected to the metal body of the car, the arrow of the device remains at the value “0”.

If this is the case, carefully insulate this wire and move on to other elements.

Please note that if the insulation is poor, the grounding cord can short circuit all electronics in your vehicle. And the more “bells and whistles” installed in your car, the more expensive repairs will cost later.

The remaining two wires should be connected to each other. These cords are connected to the starter and battery. After you do this, the first element will receive an electric starting current. Then your car will start and you can safely drive to your home or workshop without any surprises.

But before you hit the road, one of these wires should also be insulated. In this case, the starter will not suddenly start spinning while driving.

Features of the ignition system of modern cars

It is worth noting that on newer cars the ignition system has not three, but much more wires that are responsible for different key positions. On such cars there are entire groups of contacts, each of which is painted in its own color.

For example, grounding may be green or black. The wires responsible for power supply (current supply from the battery) have a yellow or red tint. As a rule, these cords are the thickest, so they are very easy to identify.

The starter wires are painted orange.

So, how to start a car without a key? The VAZ-2110 and many other cars are started using the same method described earlier:

  1. First, the ground wire is identified.
  2. Then it is isolated.
  3. The two remaining wires are closed.
  4. After a successful start, the cord from the starter should be disconnected from the power supply and also carefully insulated.

The danger of using “keyless” starting

When using this method of starting a car, do not forget that if you connect the wires incorrectly, you risk burning out the on-board network, all sensors and even the electronic engine control unit.

The cost of the latter is sometimes higher than 50 thousand rubles. You should be especially careful if the car has an on-board computer.

In this case, experts recommend not to interfere with the ignition system, but simply call a tow truck.

Method No. 2

If you own a car manufactured in the 60-70s of the last century, if you need to start the engine keyless, you do not have to remove the steering column cover.

How to start the car without a key in this case? Usually on such machines it is enough to remove the ignition switch cylinder. There is a small recess on it that should be turned with a minus screwdriver. It is not necessary to connect any wires and insulate them.

After this, the car will automatically start, and the risk of damage to the electronics (which is almost non-existent on older cars) is minimal.

Versatility of the method

The screwdriver method can also be used on more modern machines, for example on the “nine”. But before starting the car without a key, the VAZ-2109 must have a fully charged battery.

Otherwise, less current will flow to the starter, which will significantly reduce the chances of successfully starting the engine. Also note that once hacked, your ignition switch will no longer be repairable. Therefore, before such a launch, find out in advance the cost of the new element.

Sometimes the price of new locks is equivalent to the cost of 10 locksmiths who can make a new key in just 10-15 minutes.

If you are confident in your abilities, you can start working. Here we need a drill. We install it slightly above the keyhole and drill it to the full depth of the key. This way you can destroy all the locking pins that follow the original shape of the key.

Sometimes you have to repeat this operation several times. Next, you should insert a minus screwdriver there and turn its handle clockwise. After these steps, the car should start and you can continue driving again.

At this point, the question “how to start a car without a key” can be considered closed. As you can see, the launch methods are very simple. But the slightest mistake in the sequence of actions can lead to expensive repairs (in the case of breaking a lock - definitely).

Therefore, think carefully about your actions before starting your car in this way.

Conclusion

So, we figured out how to start a car without a key. The VAZ 2107-2172 can be started in several ways - either using a screwdriver or by connecting two wires.

However, remember that each of these methods is very dangerous, as there is a risk of damage to all the electronics of the car.

By the way, after starting, you will also have to break the steering wheel lock with sudden movements by rotating it from the extreme left to the right position.

Starting the car without a key

You can start the engine in several ways, which are given below.

Some will be effective, but on the verge of vandalism, and some will help maintain the integrity of most devices.

Starting method by connecting the ignition switch wires

Before starting your car by connecting wires, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the wiring diagram specifically for your car.

Do not try to start someone else's car in this way, as this is a criminal offense. You shouldn’t even start your car if the documents were left at home.

This method is ideal for most domestic and foreign cars that were produced before the second half of the 90s. Those that were released after are equipped with a variety of locking mechanisms that make starting the engine impossible.

Essentially, you are breaking into a car. As a result, the security alarm may be triggered.

For example, a Honda Civic from the early 2000s, equipped with a security system, simply blocks the circuits supplying the starter when attempting to break into it. It is unlikely that you will be able to start the engine if you do not have a car alarm key fob. If you have a key fob, you can switch the car alarm to the Valet service mode, which disables all security.

But if this is not possible, then it is necessary to act by much more “barbaric” methods. Before you start the car without a key, you need to disassemble the shield covering the steering column. It is usually made of plastic and has two halves.

It covers not only the column, but also several wiring harnesses going to the controls and the ignition switch.

Before you get to the wires that go to the ignition switch, you need to remove the cover from the steering column

Remove the plastic panels from the steering column to provide access to the wiring to the ignition switch. The halves are fastened either with bolts with a Phillips-head screwdriver or with hidden pistons.

For older cars, it will be much easier to drive a screwdriver into the ignition switch and then turn it. This way you will destroy the pins and be able to turn the lock and start the engine without much difficulty.

But if you decide not to destroy the lock, look for the electrical wiring harness.

Therefore, owners of the latest foreign cars, stuffed with electronics, should take care of the standard keys with special care, especially if there is no duplicate. And if there is no duplicate (spare key), which is usually included with a new car, then you should definitely order it from a specialized company.

How to start a car without a key - sequence of actions.

Of course, before you try to start the car without the ignition key in your hands, you should first open the driver's door and get inside (into the cabin) in order to be able to get to the ignition switch. How to open car doors without having keys without ruining anything, I have already described several methods and discussed this in detail here.

I hope you did everything correctly, opened the doors and sat comfortably in the driver’s seat. Next, you need to carefully examine the plastic casing of the ignition switch to identify where the screws holding it are located.

On newer machines, the screws may be covered with plastic plugs and the first stage of work will be to remove these plugs.

Then we take a suitable screwdriver and unscrew the screws that hold the plastic casing that covers the ignition switch and the wires coming to it.

After unscrewing the screws and removing the lock casing, you will see the wiring harness coming to the lock. And the next step will be to identify exactly those wires that are connected (switched) by the ignition switch when the ignition key is turned.

For beginners, it is first of all advisable to understand that on any car, the ignition switch (when you turn the key) connects the positive wire coming to the lock from the battery with the wires coming from the ignition coil, switch (if there is one) and from the starter relay in order to power them to be able to start the engine.

On diesel cars, the difference is that the ignition switch (when you turn the key) connects the positive wire from the battery to the wire coming from the electric valve, which shuts off or opens the fuel flow to the injection pump. And also the ignition switch on diesel engines, when you turn the key, connects the positive wire from the battery to the positive terminal of the glow plug relay (supplies power). I hope this is clear.

The ignition switches of some cars and motorcycles may also have other wires that are switched in a different position of the ignition key, for example, parking light wires, a negative wire, and others, depending on the design of the vehicle's electrical circuit.

But the main wires that should be identified are the wires responsible for starting the engine, that is, the wires that power (when you turn the key) the ignition coil, switch and starter - that is, those electrical components that are responsible for starting the engine.

Having understood what is described above, it will be much easier further. On most cars and motorcycles, the wiring harness comes to the ignition switch and is connected through a terminal block (see photo on the left), which should be disconnected from the ignition switch wires (snap the terminal latch and disconnect the block).

To begin with, you should identify the negative wire in the harness (more precisely, in the terminal block connected to the harness), so as not to accidentally short-circuit it with other (positive) wires in the future; it is advisable to immediately insulate the negative wire (its terminal) with electrical tape. The negative wire is easy to identify, since on most machines it is black or green.

But you can identify the negative wire using a tester (multimeter) set to buzzer (beeper) mode. With one tester probe we touch the wire terminal, and with the other the ground (steering iron, steering shaft or body). And if the tester beeps, then this is the negative wire.

Next, you should identify the wire coming to the lock block from the positive terminal of the battery, that is, the wire that powers the ignition system components through the lock. On most machines this wire is thicker and red (see picture).

photo above, where the red positive wire is indicated), but on some cars or motorcycles it may also be yellow.

It should be noted that the thicker red wire on many cars goes to the starter and turns on the starter when this wire is connected to terminal 30 of the ignition switch.

The easiest way to identify the necessary wires is to find the electrical diagram of your car and identify the wire by number (negative wire and the rest too).

Since each terminal of the ignition switch is numbered, it is easy to identify the required wire by the terminal number by checking the electrical diagram of your car.

For example, on domestic Zhiguli cars, the wire coming from the positive terminal of the battery to the ignition switch comes to the lock terminal number 30.

And the wire that goes to the ignition coil (and other consumers) and which the ignition switch connects with terminal 30 (when the key is turned) is connected to terminal No. 15 of the ignition switch.

Well, the wire that the ignition switch connects with terminal 30 when you turn the key to start the starter comes to the lock terminal number 50.

Other cars may have different terminal markings, and therefore it is advisable to have a wiring diagram for your car, which will help you quickly identify the right wire (especially if the wiring diagram is colored and the wires on it are the same colors as on the car).

But those who do not have an electrical diagram, or who find it difficult to read them, should again use a tester or a 12-volt light bulb. We connect one wire from the light bulb to the red (or yellow) wire, and connect the second wire to the negative black (or green) wire, and if it is already insulated, then to the ground of the car (body, steering shaft, etc.).

If the light comes on, it means the positive wire coming from the battery positive and being energized regardless of the position of the ignition key has been detected.

We also identify the wire using a tester set to voltmeter mode (measuring direct current). The tester will show an on-board voltage of 12.5 - 12.8 volts if the positive wire coming from the battery to the ignition switch is found.

After this, remember the color of the wire or mark the identified wires using masking tape and a marker.

Now all that remains is to identify the wires that go from the ignition switch to the starter and ignition coil (and to the switch if you have a car with electronic ignition). To do this, one by one, we begin to briefly connect the remaining wires from the harness in the block with the positive wire from the battery that you identified (red or yellow).

When connecting, it is convenient to use a jumper made from a piece of wire (as in the photo on the left), and on each end of this wire I advise you to put and crimp the “female” terminals, which we put one by one on the “male” terminals in the ignition switch block. If the block has other terminals (for example, as in the photo on the left, and not as in the photo above), then we simply strip the ends of the wire of insulation and twist the ends and insert them into the terminals.

When checking, for safety reasons, be sure to put the gearbox in neutral, since the electric starter may suddenly start working the next time the wire is connected.

If, the next time you connect a wire to the red positive one, you find that the starter is working, then this is the starter power wire and should be marked - it will be useful when the car engine needs to be started.

But before you try to crank the starter by shorting the wires, you should connect by twisting, or better yet, a jumper, the red (or yellow) power wire (from the battery that you identified) with other wires coming to the ignition coil and the switch.

These remaining wires coming to the lock (except for the parking light wires) are responsible for powering not only the ignition coil, but also other electrical devices of the car. And as a rule, the connection of these wires with the positive red wire is confirmed by the presence of an on-board voltage of 12.5-12.8 volts at the coil terminal and the switch terminal (number 4 in the diagram below).

The presence of voltage at the terminals of a coil or switch can be easily checked using a tester (voltmeter) or a light bulb by connecting one probe or light bulb contact to the coil terminal, and the second contact from the light bulb or probe from the tester to ground (car body). Having connected (twisted) the positive (red or yellow) wire with the rest of the ignition switch wires, except for the starter wire, it remains to briefly connect the wire from the starter until the car engine starts.

After starting the engine, of course, we disconnect the wire from the starter and insulate it with electrical tape or casing so that it does not accidentally short-circuit while driving (to prevent the starter from starting while the engine is running). You should also wrap it with adhesive tape or electrical tape, as well as the rest of the wires (except for the negative one) so that while driving you do not short the wires with the mass of the car (ignition switch housing, steering shaft, etc.).

To turn off the engine after stopping the car, you should disconnect the red positive wire (coming from the battery) from the other wires going to the ignition coil, switch (or to the solenoid valve on a diesel car).

How to start a car without a key without opening the plastic ignition switch.

This is an easier method, since you won’t have to bother with removing the plastic and looking for the necessary wires in the harness coming to the ignition switch. But if your car has a steering wheel lock and the steering wheel is locked, then you will still have to disassemble the plastic in order to disassemble the lock and unlock the steering wheel.

If there is no blocking, then this method is better than the first (described above). And here, of course, you should also first open the car doors in order to get into the interior, to open the hood and for further movement. You will need a piece of wire about one and a half to two meters and a screwdriver.

Having opened the hood, we connect a piece of wire to the positive terminal of the battery, and connect the other end of the wire to one of the terminals of the ignition coil. On cars with a contactless electronic ignition system, the Hall sensor terminal and the switch terminal should also be powered from the battery positive, but on most cars this is not necessary.

Since the electrical circuit of most cars connects the positive terminal of the ignition coil and the power terminal of the switch with one common wire (or a duplicate wire - see.

the electrical diagram on the left, which shows that the positive red wire of the ignition coil and the positive wire of the switch number 4 are connected together and go to the ignition switch) and the switch does not need to be powered separately from the battery, but only the coil.

After on-board voltage appears at the ignition coil terminal (from the separate wire you connected from the battery), you can now crank the engine crankshaft using the electric starter to start the engine.

In order for the starter to work, there are two ways: the first of which is to supply voltage from the positive terminal of the battery using another additional wire (the wire should be thicker) to terminal 50 of the starter solenoid relay, after which the electric starter will work. After starting the engine, disconnect the additional wire from terminal 50.

And the second, simpler way to avoid pulling an additional wire is to short-circuit the starter power contact pin (to which the thick wire from the battery comes) and terminal 50 using a powerful screwdriver.

But it is better to use the first method, since when the copper stud of the starter is short-circuited, the thread of the stud may be damaged (and the screwdriver too). Therefore, you should try to close the nut and not the stud, or use the first method.

Well, if you don’t want to bother with connecting the starter, and besides, you have a full cabin of passengers (or your car is parked on a descent), then after powering the ignition coil with a separate wire, you can simply push the car and start it from the “pusher”. Well, in order to turn off the engine after a trip, you will need to remove the additional wire (going to the ignition coil) from the battery terminal.

If you have an injection machine, then you should apply voltage to the control unit, as well as to the injectors and sensors, but in order not to make a mistake and damage the unit, you should carefully study the electrical circuit of your machine. But it’s better to make a duplicate key in advance.

How to start a car without a key with a diesel engine.

To start a diesel car, you should act in almost the same way as described above, only run an additional wire from the battery terminal to terminal 6 of the solenoid shut-off valve 8, located above the injection pump (see photo just below). I already wrote about this in detail in the article “What to do if a diesel engine suddenly stalls” (the article is here).

After applying voltage (using an additional wire) from the positive terminal of the battery to the shut-off valve terminal, it will open (a click will be heard), fuel access to the injection pump will be open and then you can close the starter terminals with a screwdriver in order to rotate the crankshaft to start the diesel engine (or by throwing additional wire from the battery to the starting terminal of the solenoid relay, so as not to short it with a screwdriver).

If the weather is cold, then you should also supply an additional wire (from the battery positive) and the positive terminal of the glow plug relay in order to supply voltage to the glow plugs and warm up the pre-chambers of the diesel engine for a successful start.

You can power the spark plugs without using the spark plug relay, but directly (if you don’t know where the glow plug relay is located).

But then you will need to throw a thicker wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the positive contact of the spark plug strip (read more about this and about checking glow plugs here).

After starting the diesel engine, disconnect the wire from the starter (if a screwdriver was not used and the wire was connected to the starting terminal of the solenoid relay) and from the glow plugs, leaving only the wire connected to the terminal of the shut-off solenoid valve, which will need to be disconnected only when you need to turn off the diesel engine.

To start the most modern diesel engines, in addition to the shut-off valve and glow plugs, voltage should also be applied to the control unit (and to the injectors, sensors), but in order to connect everything correctly, you should carefully study the electrical circuit of the car, and for many this is not so simple. Therefore, owners of the most modern cars, both with an injection system and modern diesel engines, should make a spare key in advance, if they don’t have one, and store it carefully.

And lastly, if you were able to start your car without a key, then it will not be difficult for intruders, but if you want to confuse them and protect your car, then you should modify the electrical wiring of your car in a very simple way, described in this article.

That seems to be all, I hope that many beginners now have an idea of how to start a car without a key, and those drivers who are not at all familiar with electrics, I hope, have realized that they should not lose the ignition key and have a duplicate of it, good luck to everyone.
