Which car navigator is better to buy?

15 Best Car GPS Navigators

The main enemies of Ivan Susanin

Even in a city familiar from childhood, a navigator can provide invaluable help, what can we say about people who have to travel a lot. And traditionally, it’s worth saying thanks to many Chinese companies - now a fully functional navigator can be purchased for a reasonable amount.

But diversity also has its downside - it’s difficult to sort through so many models, some of which are complete clones of each other, and some of which are outright unsuccessful.

Today, traditionally speaking about three price segments, we will select the best GPS navigators based on the results of 2016 - early 2017, and consider both their advantages and inevitable disadvantages.

At the same time, we deliberately did not mention GPS navigators with a DVR function, since they were discussed in a separate article.

Rating of the best GPS navigators of 2017

In the category of the best inexpensive navigators, Digma AllDrive 701 wins a convincing victory. Let's start with a screen with a diagonal of 7 inches - if 5 inches, standard for navigators for 3-4 thousand rubles, seem too small, then there will be very few other options to buy a larger screen in this price segment. Let’s add to this the built-in GPRS module - by installing a “tablet” SIM card with mobile Internet in the navigator, you don’t have to bother with transferring the latest maps or traffic information to it, as in models where you need to connect a cell phone via Bluetooth. Plus, the battery capacity is 1600 mAh, which for a device running Windows CE is more than enough for comfortable offline use. So his confident leadership in our ranking is more than justified. Main advantages:

  • 7” diagonal with a fairly high resolution (800x480)
  • High-quality satellite reception
  • Excellent autonomy

Minuses:

  • Primitive body design
  • Sometimes the display backlight may not be bright enough
10 / 10 Rating Reviews For this money, I simply couldn’t find other models with a 7-inch screen. In addition, he accesses the Internet himself, and not through a pair with a phone. So I had no doubts about the choice at all.
Developing its budget line of navigators, the Prestigio brand introduced a new product in the GeoVision series by 2017 - model 5068. The gadget platform has been preserved - a Cortex processor with 128 MB of RAM runs Windows CE with the Navitel navigation system. However, you only have to turn on the navigator to understand its significant advantage over previous models: while maintaining the 5-inch screen diagonal, the developers changed its resolution from 480x272 to 800x480. Naturally, this had the best effect on the quality and detail of the image. In addition, the display now does not necessarily require the use of a stylus, adequately perceiving finger pressure. The second innovation is integration with the warning service about cameras and traffic police posts. Such a step for a device that, by definition, has access to location services is more than justified. So the slight increase in price compared to previous GeoVision models brought with it a real improvement in both convenience and functionality. Main advantages:

  • Excellent combination of price and functionality
  • Improved screen readability in sunlight

Minuses:

  • Battery capacity is still low
9.7 / 10 Rating Reviews The navigator is fast, despite the 800 MHz - this applies to searching for addresses and loading maps.
By today's standards, Dunobil Ultra 5.0 is a classic representative of the “mid-range” - 800 MHz MStar processor on the ARM Coretx A7 core, a full-fledged 800x480 touch screen and, of course, the Navitel navigation shell. However, during the development of this model, they also added multimedia capabilities: they built in an FM transmitter (a solution not for music lovers, but also has its supporters) and added a video input, which will allow you to connect, for example, a rear view camera to the navigator - but everyone will appreciate this, who doesn’t have a standard multimedia device in their car? Another tribute to fashion is the installation of a lithium-polymer battery in the navigator instead of a lithium-ion one. And, alas, capacity is again sacrificed: 650 milliamp-hours will be very little for autonomous operation. Main advantages:

  • Pairing with smartphones to download traffic information from the Internet
  • Good satellite signal reception

Minuses:

  • Low battery capacity
9.6 / 10 Rating Reviews Convenient because you can “register” it in the car for playing music, for navigation, and for connecting a rear view camera. For a very modest price - a very good navigator.
A successful model from a manufacturer of inexpensive, but decent and widespread navigators. The filling of the device consists of a five-inch touch screen with a resolution of 480x272 pixels with backlight, a fairly fast Cortex A7 800MHz processor, 128 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. The device works stably on Windows Embedded version 6. The presence of an FM transmitter capable of transmitting audio content via radio from flash memory to the standard radio and functions for viewing photos and video files expands the applicability of this navigator. Main advantages:

  • strict design;
  • matte SoftTouch surface;
  • updated software;
  • quick satellite identification;
  • a huge set of cards;
  • colorful interface;
  • logical and convenient control;
  • High screen sensitivity, allowing you to clearly respond to finger touches
  • reliable fixation of the poker bracket;
  • USB cable, stylus, 16 GB memory card included;
  • affordable price.

Minuses:

  • low display resolution;
  • weak battery (although it is worth noting that this navigator is positioned as strictly for automobiles);
  • Internet via Bluetooth;
  • The screen brightness is not enough on sunny days.
9.6 / 10 Rating Reviews When choosing a navigator, I had the following requirements: a readable touch screen display of at least 5 inches, stable operation without brakes or freezes, completeness of Navitel maps, the ability to update. I found all this in the Prestigio GeoVision 5056, and the low price increased the desire to buy it.
The creators of LEXAND SA5+ endowed the device with a simple 5-inch display. But they installed here an optimized Windows CE 6.0 and a fairly powerful processor. All this allows you to forget about slowdowns and other lags! Cold start takes only 34 seconds. The number of receiver channels has been increased to 64. At the same time, the manufacturer reminds that it is desirable to provide constant power to the GPS navigator. The built-in battery has a low capacity, and therefore its full charge is barely enough for a couple of hours of operation. Partly what is missing here is the 3G module. But if displaying traffic jams is very important to you, then you can connect an external USB modem to the device. Navitel is used as a navigation application. Main advantages:

  • 64 receiver channels
  • Fast cold start
  • Stable software operation
  • Support for external USB modems
  • Availability of Bluetooth module

Minuses:

  • Low display resolution
  • According to reviews, the screen sensitivity is not very high
9.5 / 10 Rating Reviews The best navigator for its price category. Powerful processor, has many functions and is not buggy. Large and very good display on which the route is clearly visible. A good help is a USB host, with the help of a 3G modem, you can navigate past traffic jams.
Despite the fact that the promotion of the Artway brand in the car gadgets market is making steady progress, not all of their models are successful. In general, the NV-800 looks decent among competitors in the budget segment: 800 MHz ARM Cortex, Navitel shell, 5-inch screen, but this won’t surprise anyone now. The complaints are primarily about the screen - its resolution is only 472x272, which is not so convenient on 4.3” screens. In addition, you can only work with it with a stylus - and in a car, you know, this is inconvenient. However, this navigator was included in the rating of the best for a reason. Among its advantages, we note the quick search for satellites - having saved on the screen, the creators did not regret installing a high-quality antenna. By the standards of the budget segment, the 950 mAh battery is also not bad, although more expensive models often have a lower capacity. Main advantages:

  • Quick search for satellites
  • More than budget price

Minuses:

  • Low resolution resistive screen
9.2 / 10 Rating Reviews Finds satellites faster than more expensive models, but otherwise, consider it the same in terms of filling. But for 3 thousand!
It is not surprising that the leader of the domestic navigation software market also produces corresponding devices under its brand. The company does not have its own production base and places orders from partners from China, retaining the development and technical control of finished products. One of the most affordable new products from Navitel has a reliable body made of high-quality plastic and a 4.3-inch screen. Despite such a modest diagonal, the navigator is quite informative, and thanks to its simple and understandable interface, it is very easy to use. Among the main advantages of the new model, it is worth mentioning the increased positioning accuracy, almost instantaneous calculation of the route and short preparation time for work. The disadvantage of this electronic navigator is the resistive display with relatively low viewing angles and the lack of support for online services. Main advantages:

  • high precision positioning system;
  • sufficiently high sensitivity of the signal receiver;
  • fast start;
  • reliable fastening.

Minuses:

  • large size power adapter;
  • modest viewing angles;
  • the image is difficult to see when the screen is illuminated by sunlight;
  • does not support online services.
9.1 / 10 Rating Reviews An inexpensive and reliable GPS navigator that performs its tasks perfectly. Additionally, it warns about speeding, notifies in advance about stationary posts and radars, speed bumps, cameras and other objects along the route.
A typical representative of the budget category of car navigators without any special advantages, but also without significant disadvantages. Rejection of this relatively recently appeared brand is caused by a controversial method of attracting the attention of potential buyers and customized praise for the latest models. At the same time, the hardware tested by other manufacturers and the latest version of Navitel software allow these devices to confidently perform their main duties. The junior model of the line received a screen with a diagonal of 4.3 inches and, given the rather modest resolution of 480x272 pixels, this is rather an advantage that well masks the graininess of the matrix. The Windows CE 6.0 operating system, traditional for inexpensive navigators, and standard hardware form a quite productive tandem, so there are also no complaints about the performance of the device. Main advantages:

  • quick route building;
  • good accuracy of coordinate determination;
  • stable work.

Minuses:

  • resistive screen with small viewing angles;
  • short operating time from the built-in battery;
  • no support for online services.
8.9 / 10 Rating Reviews A good navigator in its price category. It is well assembled, works without any glitches, and “holds” its satellites confidently.

Rating of car navigators 2017 – 2018: Top 5 best models, reviews, how to choose

GPS navigators are needed on any road; they are indispensable on long trips; they will automatically calculate a route around traffic jams and congestion, and determine the location of the car on unfamiliar streets.

Rare cars today are not equipped with this device, and if you decide to use or replace an existing product for the first time, then we present the rating of navigators for a car in 2017 - 2018.

How to choose a navigator for a car

When choosing, you must consider the following characteristics of navigators:

  • Speed of loading information on the navigator about traffic jams . There are varieties with data downloading via Bluetooth and with a GPRS module. Devices with BT are less convenient; they require a connection to a phone to connect to the Network, while devices with GPRS connect to it automatically.
  • Software type . The leaders in the field are domestic developers Navitel and CityGuide. The second place is occupied by navigators with the same software from Shturmann, which have the “iGo” and “Progorod” functions.
  • Monitor settings . The standard size of the navigator is 5 inches diagonal. There are displays with a “high” resolution of 800 by 480 pixels, and with 480 by 272 pixels.

The processor loads information quickly, and Navitel software will conveniently and in detail show the condition of the streets in the city.

The presence of Bluetooth allows you to find out all the important information about traffic jams, and the Internet connection allows you to use the device as a tablet. For 2017 - 2018, this is one of the most balanced devices, which is why it takes first place in the ranking.

4. Garmin NuviCam

The most expensive representative - its cost exceeds 17 thousand rubles. How to choose a GPS navigator

They say that there are two troubles in Russia - fools and roads. What we will talk about today is directly related to roads. We will tell you how to choose a GPS navigator wisely. Simply put, how to choose the road and not be left in the cold.

A competent choice of GPS navigator will determine how convenient it will be for you to navigate unfamiliar terrain in the future.
Photo navigator-android.

orgDo you remember the story about Kostroma resident Ivan Susanin, who showed the wrong path to the enemy Polish-Lithuanian detachment and thereby saved the life of Tsar Mikhail Romanov? If at that time foreigners had a first-class GPS navigator, they would have only had to type “Kostroma Ipatiev Monastery,” where the Tsar and his mother hid, into the search bar, and the course of history would have changed forever.

Reputable brand

Today, about 90 companies represent global positioning system signal receiving devices on the Russian market. However, we will talk about manufacturers based on popularity, quality and market size they occupy. Let's start with the absolute leader.

Garmin eTrex 10

Garmin has gained immense popularity among Russians due to the reliability and versatility of its products.

By the way, it is the maps installed on Garmin GPS navigators that are currently the most comprehensive in terms of coverage of the territory of the Russian Federation.

In a word, the best GPS navigator is definitely a device from the above company. No advertising - dry facts.

TomTom navigators are very popular in Western Europe

If TomTom's reputation is anything to go by, the numbers start to speak: The brand's GPS trackers are the guiding light for 50% of cars in Europe and about 20% of vehicles in the US. All TomTom devices are equipped with exclusively proprietary software.

Prology iMap-5600

One cannot help but recall such brands as Navitel, Mio, Lexand, Shturmann, Oysters, Prestigio and Prology. The products of all of the listed brands have both their pros and cons.

LEXAND SA5

But the Russians have already made their choice: today the balance of power in the Russian market is as follows:

1. Garmin2. Prology3. Lexand4. Prestigio

5. Navitel

Yes. And don’t think that a phone with a GPS navigator will be a full-fledged replacement for a device that specializes in getting directions. The guiding star does not tolerate betrayal.

Prestigio GeoVision 5055

Put it all on the line

This is perhaps the most important criterion for choosing a GPS navigator, because it is the mapping software that will determine how comfortable it will be for you to drive through the cities and towns of the third planet. Think about this before you go out and buy a GPS navigator.

You can choose one of seven navigation programs, and we will start with what is most relevant for Russians. Navitel Maps

Navitel navigation software for GPS receivers uses detailed vector maps of Russia with all the information that may be of interest to the car owner.

This software is installed on trackers from such manufacturers as Navitel, Prestigio, Lexand, Explay and GlobusGPS. The peculiarity of this software is that it will allow you to find even the smallest farm, lost in the vast expanses of Mother Russia. It's no joke - more than 130 thousand settlements, 3 thousand.

of which with a high level of detail. Navitel can do absolutely everything: prompt by voice, automatically plot optimal routes, predict the time of arrival at a destination, indicate the current speed of movement and even display traffic jams, if, of course, we are talking about elite-class navigation systems.

In addition, Navitel gives the user the opportunity to download additional modules with other maps that are not included in the standard version of the software.

Garmin Maps
Photo wonderful-life-outdoors.de

The next contender on our list for the title of “best” is Garmin , produced by Navteq.

If the hardware of this manufacturer is famous for its reliability and high quality, then the software is characterized by intuitive controls, regular updates (updates are released four times a year) and some of the most detailed maps.

Garmin maps The whole “trick” of this brand’s cartography is that the Garmin software shell and operating system are completely optimized for certain technical characteristics of different navigator models.

iGO navigation system is installed in GPS trackers Pioneer, Mitac and TiBO. The main distinguishing features of this software are its low price and ease of use. This program contains 2D and 3D maps of all major cities in Russia.

“Avtosputnik” cards

A rather interesting domestic development is GPS maps for the Avtosputnik . This is a program that is based on maps from the Dutch manufacturer Tele Atlas. This software is compatible with GlobalSat and Hyundai GPS navigators.

Be that as it may, this piece of software can be installed on many budget devices that run Windows CE. The presented cards allow you to “play solitaire” from most major Russian cities.

Autosputnik is an attempt to focus on universality, and this, as we know, cannot guarantee that the software will work perfectly on your device.

Be that as it may, manufacturers take care of timely map updates, a well-thought-out search interface, a high degree of detail and developed functionality.

CityGuide maps

Another product that may be of interest to Russian consumers is the City Guide (“CityGID”), which is distinguished by a unique route construction algorithm and the presence of a “Dispatcher” function.

ProCity Cards

And our cartographic march is completed by the ProGorod , which will be appreciated by those who count on high-quality map visualization and timely updating of the cartographic part of the GPS system.

We will not talk about which of the packages presented above is better. However, let us draw your attention to the main criteria for choosing software:▪ coverage area (bigger is not always better);▪ level of detail (country - city - district - street - house - apartment - room - size of slippers).

The process has started

As with personal computers, the processor is responsible for the speed of your GPS navigator. When choosing a processor, everything depends not only on your capabilities, but also on your needs.

So, for fairly quick navigation, a frequency of 400 MHz is enough, but in order to comfortably watch videos and generally use the multimedia capabilities of the gadget, the processor frequency should start at 600 MHz.

The processor frequency of the LEXAND SA5 HD+ model is 800 MHz - a pretty fast device

Memory or sclerosis?

Here it is best to start from a simple principle - the more memory, the better. The more applications on the device you can run simultaneously. Of course, you can choose a device with 128 MB of RAM and be satisfied. However, this cannot be compared with devices that have 256 meters of RAM.

For the majority of GPS navigators, the RAM size does not exceed 128 “meters” Photo by healthy-holistic-living.com Firstly, the extra “meter” will allow the navigator to work faster. Secondly, switching between applications will not cause pauses during which you can have a tea ceremony.

And thirdly, you will save your nerves by insuring yourself from situations when the GPS tracker fails at the most inopportune moment.

Rating of the best car navigators

Cities are constantly growing, which leads to an ever-increasing number of roads. Because of this factor alone, many drivers want to choose a high-quality car GPS navigator.

But even if you rarely travel outside of well-known places, you are unlikely to know when and where you can expect a traffic jam, a serious accident or road works. The navigator will be an excellent assistant in this case too.

You just need to set the required route and the device itself will build the optimal path. Our rating of the best GPS navigators will help you choose a model that suits your goals and budget.

Technically, GPS navigators are practically no different from tablets, smartphones and even modern MP3 players equipped with a touch screen. This allows the devices in question to be produced by any brand that produces its products in this segment.

However, not all companies are ready to spend time and money on concluding contracts with navigation software developers, as well as developing a new product. For this reason, high-quality navigation devices are offered today by a limited number of manufacturers.

The most popular brands among them are:

  1. AvtoVision
  2. Prology
  3. Navitel
  4. Garmin
  5. Digma

LEXAND SA5 HD+

The LEXAND brand is in great demand among Russian drivers, so it is its device that opens our rating. The reliable SA5 HD+ navigator is equipped with a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. The “hot”, “warm” and “cold” start times for this model are 10, 32 and 34 seconds, respectively.

The hardware platform of the LEXAND SA5 HD+ navigator is represented by an 800 MHz processor, 128 megabytes of RAM, 4 gigabytes of internal memory, Windows CE 6.0 OS and a 3G modem.

The model under review is equipped with Navitel software with pre-installed maps for Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Ukraine, Iceland and Finland.

Advantages:

  • high navigation accuracy
  • Software from Navitel
  • variety of maps available
  • nice price
  • device performance
  • capacious 1100 mAh battery
  • FM transmitter and Hands-Free mode

Flaws:

  • average display quality
  • slow connection speed to satellites

Prology iMap-5700

Are you looking for a cheap navigator priced up to 5,000 rubles, boasting excellent build quality and an attractive design? Then the iMap-5700 model from Prology is perfect for you. It has a 5-inch display with a resolution of 480x272 pixels, an MStar processor with a frequency of 800 MHz and 128 MB of memory.

In addition to navigation functions, the device offers users several simple games, the ability to view videos and photos, and an MP3 player. The navigator runs either from a cigarette lighter or from a built-in 600 mAh battery. In reviews of the navigator, users note excellent cartographic coverage, covering Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and 9 other countries.

The total number of settlements available in iMap-5700 is 370,000, but 30 thousand of them are offered in HD format.

Advantages:

  • maps for more than 370 thousand settlements
  • high build quality
  • intuitive controls
  • fast connection to satellites
  • navigation accuracy
  • functionality
  • NMEA 0183 standard support

Flaws:

Navigator - how to choose?

A navigator is a necessary companion on the road; it will help you accurately determine your location, down to the street and house number, plot the optimal route (even taking into account traffic jams, if there is such a function), and show a map of the area.

Recently, most smartphones and tablets are equipped with GPS modules, so many motorists prefer to use mobile devices as a “second navigator.” Moreover, in practice, navigation using the application is not much different from navigation with a specialized GPS navigator.

Both smartphones and navigators have their pros and cons, but the choice in favor of one of these devices is not always obvious. However, it is still believed that specialized devices work faster, and professional maps are more accurate than maps on smartphones and tablets. To help you make your choice, Product-test experts.

ru tested the most popular models of GPS navigators and chose the best navigators. Detailed test results are presented in the Navigator Rating.

Let's take a closer look at car GPS navigators and find out what they are, what types of navigators exist, which navigator is best to buy for your purposes, how to choose it and what to pay attention to.

Display

One of the main advantages of the navigator is the display. All navigators today are equipped with color touch screens.

They differ from each other, firstly, in size: as a rule, these are diagonals from 4.3 to 7 inches.

The choice, in fact, is not for everyone, but 4.3 inches may seem small, the picture is small, and it’s more difficult to get to the desired icon, and 7-inch ones seem too bulky and block the view, besides, these “extreme” diagonals border on displays of competitors that are dangerous for navigators - smartphones at the bottom and tablets at the top.

In addition, displays differ in resolution; there are navigators with a resolution of 480×272, 800×480, 320×240. No special comments are needed here: the higher the resolution, the higher the image clarity. By the way, the highest ppi among the navigators we tested is 187 dpi, which is not so impressive, especially compared to some tablets, but enough for a navigator.

Thirdly, this is the viewing angle, which depends on the manufacturing technology of the display matrix. Most often, these are cheap TN matrices, with viewing angles of no more than 130-140 degrees. Before purchasing, we recommend that you evaluate the viewing angles by eye, check whether the colors are inverted when tilting the device left-right and up-down; as a rule, the vertical viewing angle will be much smaller.

And finally, anti-glare coating - the name speaks for itself; on the road you always want the information on the display to be easy to read, and the light falling on the screen should not interfere with viewing the information.

It’s quite problematic to check this right away, but you can turn on the navigation programs on the navigators right in the store and look at them under the same light source to get some comparative assessments about the display: which one glares more and which one less.

CPU

As in any device, the heart, or rather the brain, of a navigator is its processor, which is responsible for calculations, routing, working with maps, software, etc. Typically these are processors of the ARM family, with a frequency range from 300 to 1000 MHz.

Clock frequency is a rather deceptive thing; on the one hand, the higher the better (from 400 MHz is usually enough for normal navigation).

On the other hand, it’s always better to see for yourself, turn on the device in the store, look through the maps and try to get directions, then it will become clear whether such performance will be enough for you.

Random Access Memory (RAM)

Random access memory, or random access memory, is responsible for the temporary storage of data and commands that enable software to operate.

For normal operation, the navigator needs 128 MB; if there is more RAM, the better. Unless it is advisable for navigators on Android to have more RAM: from 512 MB and above.

In principle, almost all modern navigators do not have problems with RAM.

Persistent memory

Navigators have a device for recording, exchanging and storing data. The amount of internal memory ranges from 2 GB to 8 GB or more.

If you are going to install cards from more than one manufacturer in parallel, then 2 GB of internal memory may not be enough, since, for example, Russian cards take up from 1 to 2 GB of space, depending on the format and manufacturer.

However, even for a navigator with 2 GB of internal memory, this is not such a big problem; almost all navigators have a slot for memory cards.

MicroSD cards are used to increase memory; memory cards from 8 to 32 GB are supported, so there is enough space for everyone. You will have to buy a memory card separately; as a rule, it is not included in the package. It is also worth considering that with updates, maps slightly increase their volume.

GPS chipset

In order to catch and process GPS signals, the navigator needs an antenna and a GPS chipset. For example, during tests we most often came across chipsets from SiRF Technology and MediaTek Inc.

and Mstar Semiconductor, often representing both a signal receiver and a processor.

For example, one of the most common, SiRF Atlas V, a 64-channel GPS signal receiver and a dual-core ARM processor operating at 664 MHz, or the Mstar MSB2521A chipset with an ARM9 architecture processor and a clock frequency of 550 MHz.

Start time

The chipset needs time to calculate its location.

When first launched or after a long break in use, the navigator must obtain and save data on the orbits of GPS satellites before calculating the coordinates of its own location. This start is called a cold start and takes quite a long time, usually up to 200-300 seconds, this is considered the norm.

In addition to cold starts, there are warm and hot starts.

Warm start - the time spent by the navigator to start after a short break in use; not all satellite data has become outdated yet, and the navigator starts quite quickly; the norm is up to 30-60 seconds.

A hot start occurs when there is a short-term interruption in signal reception, for example, driving through a tunnel, along a narrow street surrounded by high-rise buildings, or any other similar case, it can even be a quick turn off and on of the GPS receiver. As a rule, it takes up to ten seconds.

Battery

Modern car navigators have built-in batteries. In our tests, we came across batteries with capacities from 850 (Shturmann Link 700 HD) to 3000 mAh (Prology iMap-7000Tab). They don’t last long – about 1 to 3 hours of battery life. However, long battery life is far from the most important thing for a navigator.

Frame

Almost always, matte or glossy plastic is used as the material for the body, sometimes with edging at the ends. The body is most often rectangular in shape. Special attention should be paid to the location of the display: sometimes it is recessed into the body, which is inconvenient.

For example, it will be more difficult for you to press on the edges of the display, and dirt and dust may accumulate in the corners. Before purchasing, it makes sense to check the build quality, press on the case from different sides, listen to see if it makes unnecessary sounds, if it bends, if the parts fit tightly together, etc.

It is also worth pressing on the back of the case and seeing if streaks appear on the display.

Ports and connectors

What ports and connectors can be seen on navigators? Many different ones. Most likely, your navigator will have 3 connectors - mini-USB for charging and connecting to a computer, an audio jack for headphones and a micro-SD card slot for memory expansion.

Sometimes you may find an AV input for displaying images from another device on the navigator display, a DC network connector for charging the device, a SIM card slot on navigators with a GPRS module for downloading traffic jams, and such a throwback as a com port for transferring data to low speeds, now it is practically not used.

Sometimes, instead of mini-USB, you can find a micro-USB connector or even a full-size version of the USB connector. If the package includes a stylus, then the case has a special connector for it.

Equipment

What else is usually put in the box besides the navigator itself? The kit always includes a car mount with a suction cup on a hinge or with screws, a power adapter for the cigarette lighter, an instruction manual, a warranty card and a USB cable for connecting to a computer.

Mounting on a hinge is more convenient, but you need to unscrew several fasteners to rotate the navigator. The only possible disadvantage is that the rotation angle may be lower than that of a screw mount.

Sometimes you can see a card with a license number and/or data for activating the navigation program. If it is not there, then it does not matter, it means that everything is already activated, the license number is indicated in the navigation software.

If the navigator has a resistive display, then a stylus can be hidden in a special housing connector or mounting loops. Some manufacturers add branded cases for storing the navigator.

In some cases, you can also see a network power adapter, adapters, or, as in the Shturmann Link 500, a SIM card for accessing the Internet.

operating system

Most car navigators run on Windows CE 5.0 or 6.0, or Android (2.0 to 4.1).

Windows devices are on average cheaper, Android devices are essentially budget tablets, more functional due to the ability to install a huge number of applications, but they are also more expensive. Garmin navigators stand apart, whose software is developed based on Linux OS.

Navigation software

A navigator is not a navigator at all without maps and a navigation program.

Today there are several main players in the Russian navigator market; you can find devices with pre-installed maps and software from: Navitel, CityGuide, Garmin and Shturmann with their own software and maps from Navteq.

Street names and house numbers are constantly changing, new roads appear, so the maps are constantly updated. It is believed that professional maps are more accurate than maps installed on smartphones or tablets.

Roads and cities tend to change, which means maps and software updates will be needed. When purchasing a navigator, you usually receive at least 2 years of free updates.

If the navigator can access the Internet, then updating is not a problem; you can update directly from the program. If you don’t have access to the Internet, you’ll have to go to the software developer’s website and read instructions on how to do this.

If you delve into it once and update the software with maps, in the future it will be easy and simple for you to do it again.

Separately, we note that it is usually possible to simultaneously install several navigation programs and maps on the navigator at once, with the ability to switch between them (item in the “Navigation” or “Path” or “Navigation Path” settings). However, for example, on Garmin navigators, you cannot do this.

Traffic jams and wireless interfaces

This function is needed to inform about traffic jams and plot a route based on this data. As mentioned above, some companies offer their own traffic jam service, some use Yandex data.

traffic jams, unfortunately, they are all far from ideal and can either show the absence of traffic jams in those places where they exist, and vice versa. Most often, these are free services, so you should not expect high quality from them. However, the feature is generally useful and usually shows the largest and most complex traffic jams.

Keep in mind that although the service itself is free, to download traffic jams you will need an Internet connection, which still implies certain financial expenses. However, you pay not for traffic jams, but for Internet traffic.

Another point is that this function is almost inextricably linked with wireless interfaces, which are generally necessary only for downloading traffic data. In order to download traffic data, the navigator needs any of the following:

  • Bluetooth module. It is assumed that you synchronize the navigator with a phone that has Internet access, and you will receive traffic data through the phone. A bonus to the Bluetooth module is usually the ability to work with SMS messages and make calls from the navigator via the phone in Hands-Free mode. It is worth saying that this is not the most convenient option, since the phone is discharged, but you will not need to pay for the tariff on a separate SIM card, and many people have a phone with Internet access. Among the navigators we tested, for example, Explay ND-52B has a module.
  • Wi-Fi module. You will also need a smartphone that can operate as a wireless modem (portable Wi-Fi hotspot). This is, for example, in the Prestigio GeoVision 5850HDDVR. The navigator connects to the smartphone's Wi-Fi network and downloads traffic jams. Usually, navigators on Android OS have a Wi-Fi module. The disadvantages of this method are the same as with the Bluetooth module - the need to have a similar hotspot in the car, and this will drain the phone. But there is no need for an additional fee if, for example, you have unlimited Internet connected to your smartphone.
  • GSM/GPRS module. Quite a serious option; you need to purchase a separate SIM card so that the navigator can independently access the Internet and download the necessary information. Some conscious manufacturers add a SIM card with special tariffs to the device, like the Shturmann Link 3000. Most operators have special offers - Internet for tablets and phones for reasonable amounts. You can also choose an Internet tariff based on traffic - incoming traffic should not exceed 120-300 KB per hour.
  • TMS receivers. There are navigators equipped with TMS receivers. For example, Garmin navigators. They receive data about the traffic situation in the FM range. This service is free for owners of Garmin navigators; there is no need to pay for the Internet. By the way, this means that the device cannot independently access the Internet, which, in principle, is not so necessary for a navigator, only for simple software and map updates.

Multimedia and entertainment

Almost all navigators allow you to view pictures, listen to music and watch videos. Many have a built-in calculator, dictionary, compass, calendar, FM transmitter for transmitting a signal to a radio, etc.

Something to say about watching videos, for example, most navigators on Windows may have problems with high-resolution video, so you will have to convert it to low-resolution.

Navigators usually have several games installed, for example, Tetris, Snake, Reversi, etc. In general, entertainment for one or two times. Some navigators have browsers for accessing the Internet, but they are extremely inconvenient.

The manufacturer can add stripped-down versions of programs for Windows, such as Microsoft Office, with the function of viewing Word, Excel files and others.

Quite modest capabilities; the above does not apply only to navigators on Android.

Built-in DVR

Some navigators are equipped with a built-in camera, and sometimes even two (rear and front), as in the Prology iMap-7000Tab. The presence of a camera allows you to use them also as a video recorder, turning the navigator into a hybrid device.

Unfortunately, this affects the price and quality of the navigator, and not for the better: video recordings are of poor quality, and the price is higher.

However, in order to save space and money (so as not to spend money on a navigator and recorder right away), you can purchase a similar device.

TV module

Not a very common option, but some manufacturers add a TV tuner to the navigator with a small external antenna that allows you to receive and display television channels like a TV. This function may be useful for those who like to watch TV channels or find out the news. Often, a similar function is present instead of loading traffic jams. In our tests, this model was teXet TN-770 TV.
