Webasto for diesel
Some cars have autonomous heaters called Webasto.
This pre-launch mechanism is a small device that is equipped with a heating system. It is designed to heat the car interior, as well as the engine, before the engine is started. Sometimes it is used only to warm up the interior.
Types of Webasto and its purpose
This type of heater was designed for use during the cold season. It is worth noting that in summer, webasto can be used as an air conditioner.
Such heaters are popular among consumers. Because it is very convenient, especially if there are small children in the family, to get into a car that is already heated.
The company has been operating on the market for many years, producing climate control and heating devices for cars. And with the development of industry in this industry, two types of webasto can be distinguished, depending on the way they work:
- Liquid. This heater is installed under the hood of the vehicle. It runs on antifreeze or antifreeze. And the system has a direct connection to engine cooling. It works on the principle of a stove, when heating occurs due to hot liquid. Fuel consumption here is higher than in an air unit.
- Air. This heater is more economical, consuming only up to 0.2 liters of fuel per hour. It can be installed directly inside the car. This webasto turns on in offline mode to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the car.
Webasto operation
Both types of heaters operate from fuel that comes directly from the tank. An air heater resembles a hair dryer in its operating principle.
When installing Webasto on a diesel engine, the fuel, combining with air, is ignited by a spark plug, and combustion already occurs inside a special chamber. There is a fan blowing from the outside, due to which warm air is distributed evenly throughout the cabin.
The result is not only pre-start heating of the engine, but also warming up of the entire cabin. The warm air will also melt the snow on the vehicle windows, which is a big advantage of using it in the winter season. This means that the car is prepared for movement, both the interior and the engine, even before the internal combustion engine is put into operation.
System advantages
An engine preheater has a number of advantages. Among them are:
- The diesel engine can be started in any frost. But here it is important to use high-quality fuel. Sometimes the causes of malfunctions lie precisely in low-quality fuel.
- There is no need to waste your time warming up the vehicle yourself. The principle of Webasto is that it will do everything on its own.
- For cars, a cold start is very undesirable, which is why many drivers prefer to use Webasto. So, the engine will start much smoother and will last longer for its owner.
Webasto installation
Some types of such equipment have a simple design, so they can easily be installed by hand. At the same time, it is very important to follow all instructions; there is an instruction manual for this.
It is worth understanding how Webasto works on diesel. It has two modes - summer and winter. And in order to understand how to use it correctly, you should know that the winter mode is initially activated, which should be indicated in the user manual. And before the system turns on, you need to turn on the heater in the car to warm air mode.
You will need to select a time for warming up and press start of the system. It will turn on in automatic operating mode and turn off after the specified time. From now on, everything will be done automatically, and you don’t have to worry about safety. The entire system has sensors that regulate the process, and is also equipped with a thermostat and fuses.
Sometimes errors occur and Webasto does not start. You can try to eliminate the cause yourself, but it would be safer to contact a car service center, where specialists can understand the causes of the breakdown and make sure that the device starts again.
Heater cost
After car enthusiasts have figured out what Webasto is in a car, many are interested in the question of what its cost is, and how justified its installation will be.
It is worth noting that their fuel consumption is insignificant, and regular use of the system in winter, which can be done either via a mobile phone or via a timer, will extend the life of the engine itself. As German developments show, such a system will pay for itself within about five years, and in our winter conditions even faster.
Despite the fact that the cost of such a system can be from 25 to 60 thousand, depending on the model and brand of the manufacturer. Installation can cost from 2000 thousand or more. Although some models can be installed on your own.

What is Webasto in a car? The principle of operation of Webasto for gasoline and diesel, the cost of Webasto
What is Webasto for a car? Principle of operation, cost of kits and installation. Video: how Webasto works.
Every winter, drivers across the country face severe weather conditions. And we are talking not only about the icy interior of the car, but also about frosty windows and other “delights” of this season. The strangest thing is that even residents of regions where the cold season lasts more than the standard three months a year, when buying a car, do not think about using it in cold weather.
Even people who buy expensive cars for some reason refuse a lot of additional services, as well as advanced configurations. The reason lies, of course, in money. But the cost of installing a pre-heater is not so high that you suffer from the cold every day, sitting in an icy chair and touching a steering wheel that is frozen through.
Every experienced driver knows that a cold start at subzero temperatures significantly increases engine wear . It is for this reason that during the winter months you can see responsible drivers waiting for that happy moment when their car “warms up”. At this moment they themselves are trembling slightly, wrapping themselves in jackets.
Is giving up the pre-heater worth such sacrifices?
The term “Webasto,” which can be heard among car owners, does not always refer to a specific brand.
An analogue of such a common mistake is “copier”, which refers to all copiers, regardless of the manufacturer. But Webasto is currently considered a leader in its field.
And it produces pre-heaters . These heating systems allow you to enjoy a comfortable start at any time of the year.
It turns out that the driver can avoid prolonged warming up of the engine from the moment he turns the ignition key until he starts driving. And this allows you to forget about gloves, hats and warm jackets inside the car, about icy seats, a cold steering wheel and gear shift knob.
The driver of a car equipped with Webasto can simply leave the house, get into his car and go where he needs to go. Without removing snow from the windows, without wasting your own time and without risking your health. And such a “dream” has long become a reality for many.
But how does this device work? What is required to run all systems? And is it safe?
The device itself is a small combustion chamber , which is installed under the hood of the car next to other elements. The dimensions of the heater are small: 250x100x170 millimeters.
It connects to the cooling system and heating system of the cabin. And the Webasto power system is connected to the car’s fuel tank.
And, of course, the device connects to the on-board computer to coordinate all actions.
The start of the system can be programmed in advance using a timer . This is the simplest and cheapest, but not the most effective way. However, if you use your car exclusively for travel between work and home, then the timer will help you get into a warm car every day.
A much more convenient way to start the heater is using a remote control . This option is suitable for people who leave their car under the house. One press of a button, and the car begins to prepare for the trip. And after 20 minutes, the driver and passengers will get out and immediately start driving.
With the development of modern technologies, another way to launch the system has appeared - a mobile phone . You will need a special SIM card for the car. But you can activate the heating from any distance, even if the car is in the garage. In addition, in this case, five different people can have access to control, which greatly simplifies the situation.
Having received the desired signal, Webasto starts. The fuel enters the combustion chamber, and the generated heat heats the coolant. That, in turn, begins to move along the contour of the car and warms it up. The interior heating radiator (better known as the “stove”) also heats up.
Despite the fact that the Webasto system itself runs on fuel, the energy to start the car’s climate system is taken from the battery. So we recommend that you closely monitor his condition. Webasto, of course, will not be able to “land” a charged and serviceable battery. But if it is faulty, then starting the preheater can lead to complete discharge.
If you are concerned about increased fuel consumption, then this system should not cause concern. In one hour, the heater will consume about 0.5 liters. At the same time, the average warm-up time for a car does not exceed 20 minutes.
It is much more profitable to use diesel due to the low cost of this type of fuel. But the owners of such cars know very well how cold it can be in winter. If gasoline “brothers” warm up within 15 minutes from the time the ignition is turned on, then some diesel cars will require at least 40 minutes.
The thing is that they do not have a separate interior heating system. Drivers have to dress very warmly because the car is completely frozen and cannot warm anyone. Thus, the trip turns into a terrible ordeal for the driver and his passengers.
Hats and gloves, warm jackets and scarves - all these items of clothing are necessary for people who get into such a car in winter. If walking helps to warm up, and in public transport the temperature rises due to a large number of people, then it is very easy to freeze in the cabin of a cold car.
If the driver needs to cover a short distance, the car may not even have time to warm up. This means that all the people in the cabin will be freezing all the way.
A preheater is the only way to warm up your car in advance. By installing Webasto, the driver no longer has to worry about the temperature in the cabin. Modern models have improved technical parameters and allow you to warm up the car faster with low battery consumption.
The cost of Webasto starts from 38,300 rubles for passenger cars. For more comfortable operation, various remote controls are also provided, but they are not included in the basic package. So feel free to add another 12-15 thousand rubles to this price.
For trucks, buses and special equipment, Webasto will cost much more: the minimum kit will cost 53,200 rubles .
Also take into account the fact that you will have to pay separately for the installation of Webasto - the basic cost of installation is from 19,000 rubles.
But you can install Webasto on a car yourself. How to do it? We will explain in detail in this article.

Webasto system - what is it in a car?
The popularity of the Webasto engine preheater is truly enormous! The models are popular not only in the Russian, but also in the world market. This German company occupies the same place in the production of devices responsible for starting the engine in cold weather that is given to the Apple brand in the field of mobile devices.
Simply put, these are the pioneers who presented the world with the first models of autonomous units of this type. And now, in order.
Webasto - what is it and their types
Like all autonomous pre-heaters, Webasto has two types: air and liquid. The first group of devices uses air from the atmosphere to heat the interior, the second is based on the circulation of heated liquid (antifreeze).
Air type heater
The heater we are considering is a miniature stove that has adopted some of the principles of the internal combustion engine.
It works like this: using an air pump, air is forced into the combustion chamber from the atmosphere. At the same time, the fuel pump begins to work, which takes fuel from the car’s tank and injects it through the nozzle.
Exactly the same mixture of air and gasoline is created, which enters the engine cylinders.
Video - presentation of the operation of the engine pre-heater from Webasto:
Then a banal ignition occurs with a spark from the built-in glow plug. There are just no pistons. The whole process is started so that then, with the help of a supercharger, hot air, passing along the way through the radiator, cooling it to the desired temperature, begins to flow into the car interior. Exhaust gases from the chamber are released into the atmosphere.
Video - Webasto preheater, what it is and how it works in harsh Siberian conditions:
In order to prevent the device from overheating, it is equipped with a control unit and a sensor that turns off the heater in the event of a critical temperature increase.
Operating principle of Webasto liquid type
With this unit everything is a little more complicated. Its main task is not to heat the interior, but to help start the engine in cold weather. The principle of operation is similar to that used in an air-type heater, but the idea is not to heat the air, but to create heating of the antifreeze, which then enters the cylinder block and the engine cooling system.
Video - story about Webasto engine preheaters:
Thanks to forced injection, the engine starts faster, and there is no need to waste time waiting for the engine to “heat up” to the desired temperature.

The installation diagram for the Webasto Termo Top engine pre-heater is given in the installation instructions, which can be downloaded (in PDF format, 1Mb).
Mobile applications for controlling the operation of Webasto preheaters
Speaking about Webasto preheaters, it should be noted that, in addition to mechanical devices, built-in electronics play a significant role in the operation. It allows you to remotely control the unit, transmit and process data using the on-board computer, monitor the health of the device itself and the heating temperature.

What is Webasto in a car and how does it work? Webasto operating and repair instructions
With the onset of winter, many car owners are concerned about the serviceability of the cabin heater, that is, the stove. Usually its revision is done in the fall. But owners of cars with Webasto do not need to worry about this issue. If you have such a system, you don’t have to turn on the cabin heater at all in winter. What is Webasto in a car? We will talk about this in our article today.
Webasto is a German company engaged in the production of various components for cars. It was the employees of this company who created the first pre-start autonomous heater. The company has been producing them for 60 years. Webasto also installs air conditioners.
The first models with such equipment appeared already in the 60s. Webasto is one of the top 100 major suppliers to the automotive industry around the world. In our area, the company is known for its auxiliary heaters and pre-heaters.
Thus, Webasto is an autonomous stove that generates heat regardless of the condition of the engine. The device has its own combustion chamber and heat exchanger. "Webasto" refers to fuel heaters and runs on diesel. Where is the fuel taken from? Typically, diesel is taken from the tank.
But if Webasto was installed abnormally on a passenger car (gasoline), then the fuel is poured into a separate tank.
Where is it found?
Trucks are usually produced with Webasto from the factory. These are truck tractors and long-haul trucks. This heater is also available on tourist buses. The larger the interior area, the higher the power of the Webasto itself.
Today you can find models with 2.3 or more kilowatts. For passenger cars and minibuses, one and a half kilowatts is enough.
The dimensions of the autonomous heater are small - 25x10x17 centimeters, which allows you to easily place it in the back of a passenger car.
Functions, types
What tasks does the Webasto engine perform? In total, two main functions can be distinguished:
- Heating the coolant.
- Interior heating.
We also note that there are “dry” heaters on the market. They are not connected to the cooling system and only work to heat the interior. As a rule, their cost is 20 percent less.
But you shouldn’t install them on diesel engines - only on gasoline ones.
The so-called “wet” autonomous system is built into the ODS, fuel and exhaust system of the car.
All this requires a lot of effort, so the cost of installing such a heater will be higher.
Design and operating principle
The design and operating principle of the standard Webasto are quite simple, so the unit is highly reliable. The autonomous system is capable of preparing the car for starting even in 40-degree frost. The system design assumes the presence of a heat-generating module and a control system.
The heat generating module includes:
[tchecklist]
- fuel supply pump;
- glow plug;
- the combustion chamber;
- fan;
- nozzle;
- heat exchanger
[/tchecklist]
The pump supplies fuel from the tank to the heater. Next, the diesel fuel is sprayed and mixed with air in a separate chamber. The mixture is then ignited by the glow plug.
There is no classic spark plug here. After the mixture is ignited, the heat exchanger heats up. Then, with the help of a fan, heat enters the cabin. And combustion products (gases) come out.
The autonomous version of the system has a separate exhaust.
The control systems include a special remote control, sensor and timer. Some models are equipped with a GSM module, which allows you to start remotely from a mobile phone. In this case, the autonomous system can be started using a timer by setting the required time in advance.
On machines where Webasto is installed as standard, the power button is located near the control unit of the stove itself. A sensor with a relay serves to automatically turn off the system if the air temperature has reached the desired parameter.
After some time, the autonomous system can restart, working until the interior warms up again to the specified level. This is very convenient because such a system saves fuel.
About consumption
Since we are talking about savings, it is worth talking about the fuel consumption of an autonomous heater. The weakest models (up to 2 kW) consume about 200-300 grams of fuel per hour. More serious autonomous batteries of 3-5 kilowatts have a consumption of 500 grams.
Is it worth installing a less productive Webasto in a truck (one and a half kilowatts) in order to save fuel? As practice shows, such a solution increases consumption even more. After all, after heating, the three-kilowatt autonomous heater immediately turns off.
And a weaker system needs time to warm up the entire cabin.
How does the hair dryer interact with the cooling system?
We have already answered the question about what Webasto is in a car and how it heats the interior. But how does it work with the cooling system? Everything is very simple here. After submitting a control signal, thermal energy is generated, which is transferred to a heat exchanger built into a small circle of the cooling system.
But how does liquid circulate in a small circle? It is driven by a built-in circulation pump. Warm antifreeze also penetrates into the heater radiator, which is located in the cabin. Therefore, after starting the engine, there is no need to wait until everything warms up.
The system additionally includes fans that supply warm air to the car windows. This is very convenient if ice has formed on the back side. How long does it take for the interior and engine to warm up? As practice shows, this takes from 15 to 25 minutes.
The coolant temperature is +40 degrees, so there is no need to “oil” the engine at idle after starting. This is what the Webasto operating and repair instructions say. After 15 minutes the car is completely ready to go.
The advantages of Webasto in the car
What is winter for a motorist? These are always icy windows, a cold interior and constant engine warm-ups. With an autonomous heater you will forget about these problems. Webasto heats not only the interior, but also the standard heater, as well as the engine itself.
15 minutes before departure, just press the button on the GSM remote control, and the car will completely warm up. It doesn’t matter what temperature it is outside the window - 5 or 40 degrees below zero. With an autonomous heater, the diesel engine will start in any weather.
This applies to both new and old units.
About the disadvantages
The first disadvantage of an autonomous heater is its price. On average, such cars cost 1-2 thousand dollars more. If we consider the option of a non-standard installation, it will cost an average of 800-1200 dollars (depending on the type of “hair dryer” and its power).
The next disadvantage is the difficult repair of Webasta. Despite its simple design, it is better to repair the unit in specialized workshops. You can repair Webasta yourself only in case of minor breakdowns.
If the hardware fails, the unit is replaced entirely or disassembled and repaired “down to the screw.”
How to diagnose Webasto?
Let's look at the most common symptoms of breakdowns and methods for eliminating them:
[tchecklist]
- Characteristic odor of fuel in the forced air. This problem may occur due to a leaky fuel line. How is diagnosis made in this case? It is necessary to inspect the correct connection of the battery to the fuel tank. There are no kinks in the hoses. It also happens that a blockage forms inside the fuel line itself. In this case, it must be removed and washed thoroughly. Also, a characteristic odor may appear due to drips at the joints of the tubes.
- The autonomy does not spin up to full capacity. It happens that the heater stops heating the interior and the engine in a short time. Instead of the 15 minutes allotted by the factory, he needs about 40. What does this mean? This usually happens when there is soot and carbon deposits in the heater in large quantities. These deposits accumulate in the combustion chamber, causing heat dissipation to deteriorate. To fix the problem, you need to remove the battery and clean the system.
- Webasto does not turn on. Here you need to check the timer. If there is no voltage on it, then the cable or a blown fuse is to blame. Damaged elements are replaced with new ones. After this repair, the heater will work again. By the way, on models with a GSM remote control, you need to additionally check the batteries. If they are discharged, the hair dryer may not turn on.
- The heater smokes during operation and coolant drips. Along with this, a characteristic sweet smell of exhaust gases may be observed. This all indicates leaky pipes in the cooling system. Some of the antifreeze may fall on the hot parts of the autonomous system and evaporate there. In most cases, this is due to loose clamps. But you shouldn’t rule out cracks in the pipes. In this case, they are replaced entirely with new ones. If there are no visible leaks, but the characteristic smell is still present, you will have to remove the autonomous unit and look in more detail for the “root” of the problem. But it is better to entrust this operation to professionals (especially if the battery is still under warranty).
- Fuel is leaking. This happens due to improper installation of the heater. You need to inspect the hoses for kinks. If the tubes are straight and dry, you will have to remove the autonomous system and look for the problem in it.
[/tchecklist]
When diagnosing a heater at a service center, specialists check all elements for cracks, blockages, wear and deformation. Plugs, terminals and fuses are also diagnosed. Damaged parts are replaced with new ones. Next, the heater is assembled and installed in place.
Conclusion
So, we found out what Webasto is in a car and how it works. An autonomous heater is a very useful thing in a passenger car, but in a truck it is absolutely necessary. With it you can forget about a cold interior and problematic winter starts, even if you have an old diesel engine. Installing such a system is quite justified, especially in regions where winter lasts 5-6 months a year.

How Webasto works
It's no secret that in Russian winter conditions, a car engine needs to be preheated. Otherwise, it is subjected to serious load during startup, which leads to rapid wear of parts and final failure of the entire unit. Today, the Webasto preheater helps solve this problem.
The Aspid company provides services for the sale and installation of liquid heaters, ensuring easy and comfortable engine starting, interior heating and the absence of snow and ice on the windows. From this article you will learn how Webasto works and what advantages this liquid preheater has.
The Webasto autonomous heater is a modern compact device that preheats the interior and the car engine. Light weight and modest dimensions make it possible to integrate a cooling system.
When wondering how Webasto works, it is worth knowing that it operates on gasoline or diesel, which is supplied directly from the tank. The pre-heater is mounted in the engine compartment. The exact location may vary depending on the specific car model.
To better understand how Webasto works, you need to understand its internal structure. The unit body contains the following elements:
- Water circulation pump;
- Fuel pump for dosing;
- Temperature sensors;
- Fan;
- Heat exchanger;
- Stainless steel combustion chamber;
- Diagnostic control unit;
- Waste product muffler.
Let's look at how Webasto works
By means of a nozzle, a certain amount of fuel supplied from the gas tank is injected into the combustion chamber. At the same time, the air supply process starts. The built-in fan optimizes mixture formation. The glow plug ignites the combustible mixture, which leads to its combustion and subsequent heating of the coolant.
The injection pump forces the liquid to move along the heat exchange circuit. At the same time, it passes through the internal combustion engine and the radiator. Using the control unit, you can control the functioning of all processes.
Temperature control is automatically carried out. This helps prevent the device from overheating and also reduces the concentration of harmful gases in the exhaust.
The gases escaping through the muffler are cooled to a normal temperature, at which ignition of the oils is impossible.
How does diesel and petrol Webasto work?
Models of liquid heaters in basic and modified versions are equipped with a remote control system or a timer, and are able to function regardless of the operation of the internal combustion engine. Their main functions are:
- Preheating the interior of the vehicle before turning on the engine;
- Additional heating of the air in the cabin together with the standard stove (if this function is enabled).
To understand how Webasto works, you must first read the operating and installation manual. It describes the features of the device and options for installing equipment with connection to the fuel circuit of the machine and the liquid heating system of the cabin.
Many people ask how Webasto works on gasoline, and what fuel can be used. The manufacturer has provided the possibility of using leaded and unleaded gasoline. The use of additional additives to improve fuel quality will not affect the operation of the heater in any way.
The regulations for the correct installation of heating equipment have been specially developed for use in the European Union. The company agrees to their use outside the EU.
Each unit of goods has a corresponding plate indicating the specific type of fuel. Do you need to know how Webasto works on diesel? The operating principle is absolutely identical.
The only nuance is to pre-start the heater for 15 minutes during the period of switching the engine from summer to winter diesel fuel.
All vehicle components located in close proximity to the heater must be protected from overheating and the ingress of technical oils or fuel. In this case, the PP muffler is taken to a safe place in the engine compartment, where it is protected from the ingress of flammable liquids.
A sign is installed near the fuel filler neck warning that the heater will turn off when fuel is added. Failure to comply with the manufacturer's instructions will result in the cancellation of the warranty and the removal of liability on the part of the manufacturer.
After installation of the equipment, all air is removed from the liquid pipeline and a test run is carried out. During this period, the integrity of the system and its tightness are checked.
If you have any questions about how Webasto works, where you can buy it and how to install it, please contact our managers. They will answer any remaining questions and be able to schedule you for preheater installation.

What is Webasto, how to use it, how Webasto works
Webasto - what it is, how it works, operating tips
I would like to note that the name Webasto, used by many motorists, is actually the name of the heating device manufacturer.
Since it was this German company that first developed an engine preheater, this name is in most cases applied to the company’s products.
Although today such devices are produced by a huge number of other manufacturers. Webasto - what is it and how to use it?
What is Webasto and how does it work
An autonomous pre-heater or Webasto is a compact device weighing about 5 kg, which is built into the circuit of the cooling system, fuel system, and also the on-board network of the machine. The main task of this device is to warm up the engine, as well as the car interior, before the power unit starts operating.
With the help of preheating, fuel consumption is reduced, the service life of engine elements is extended, and optimal climatic conditions are ensured in the car interior. Webasto works autonomously, which means you don’t have to worry about the battery charge being used up during preheating, which may cause difficulties in starting the engine.
Types of Webasto systems and their operating principles
Nowadays, two types of pre-heaters are used:
Webasto air pre-heaters are mounted in the car interior. Such devices weigh from 5 to 7 kg. They consume about 200 ml of fuel in 60 minutes.
Air heaters include:
- An electric pump that supplies the required amount of fuel.
- Air blower.
- Control block.
- The combustion chamber.
- Exhaust system.
- Flame detector.
- Means for the operation of the heater.
- Heating regulator
The operating principle of this type of Webasto is as follows. The pump supplies fuel to the combustion chamber of the heater. The air blower supplies air to the burner nozzle. Air intake occurs from outside the vehicle. Then the fuel is distributed through the combustion pipe through the burner section. There the mixture of air and fuel burns.
The heater is started by a glow plug. Combustion of the mixture leads to the formation of heat, which is released in the heat exchanger. Already warm air enters the car interior. Air is also taken from the passenger compartment for additional heating.
Combustion products are discharged outside using a special system, which includes an exhaust pipe and a muffler.
We will also try to explain how liquid-type Webasto works. Such devices are mounted under the hood of the car, taking into account the characteristic features of the engine compartment. Liquid Webasto is a device that is built into the cooling system of a car’s power unit.
This engine preheater warms up the coolant and engine oil. In addition, Vebasto of this type is connected to the car’s ventilation system, thanks to which the car owner can warm up the car’s interior in advance. This Webasto preheater weighs approximately 5 kg.
When the device is turned on, it consumes approximately 1 liter of fuel per hour.
Liquid systems include:
- Heat exchanger.
- Supercharger.
- Fuel pump.
- Exhaust system.
- Circulation pump.
- Webasto d/o products.
The operating principle of Webasto of this category differs from the way Webasto of the air type works. First, fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber. At the same time, air is supplied using a blower.
In order to better form the mixture, a special swirler is used. Next, a spark is supplied, which ignites the mixture, after which it burns and heats the coolant.
The pump promotes its movement through the heat exchanger, motor and radiator.
The Webasto control unit monitors the correct functioning of the various components of the engine preheater, as well as monitoring the mixture combustion procedure.
It is also needed to prevent overheating and comply with environmental standards.
In order to warm up the interior, it is enough just to use the standard heater system, after warming up the engine with Webasto.
How to use Webasto
Detailed information about what Webasto is and how to use this device can be found in the system operating instructions. We will only mention the basic recommendations from preheater manufacturers.
- Webasto components must not be immersed in liquid.
- The components of the system must not be affected by electrical discharges.
- Work at high air humidity and high temperatures is prohibited.
- It is not advisable to use Webasto at gas stations.
- It is prohibited to operate the engine preheater in garages and other closed premises.
- Webasto should only work with the type of fuel specified by the manufacturer.
- The system should be turned on periodically when the engine is not warmed up at the lowest fan power level for approximately 10 minutes.
- The maximum duration of Webasto operation should not exceed 60 minutes.
It is noteworthy that Webasto can be used in summer or winter mode. When choosing the winter option, the car interior is heated, but activating the summer mode is used for ventilation. In winter, the operating principle of Webasto is based on heating the coolant, and in summer the system starts the fan, ensuring ventilation of the car interior.
Today you can find a huge number of Webasto varieties on sale that can be used with diesel and gasoline engines. The choice of a specific model depends on what engine size you intend to install the Webasto preheater on.
Some diesel cars are already equipped with Webasto at the factory, but it only works after the engine is started. Its main purpose is to heat the coolant.
Some craftsmen use additional parts and transform such a Webasto into a real engine preheater.
We hope that you were able to understand what Webasto is and how to use this system. The operating principle of Webasto is very simple, so even beginners can understand the functioning of the system.

Webasto on Freelander 2: device, operation, features
In this article we will talk about an additional heater using Webasto fuel on one of the most popular Land Rover car models - Freelander 2. Cars produced before 2012 and since 2013 have a slight difference in the design of the heater.
For reference : Webasto is the name of the manufacturer. And the heating device itself is correctly called “fuel-powered additional heater.” This is how the common people took root - Webasto.
There are two modes of operation of the Webasto additional heater on Freelander 2 vehicles.
The first and main one is in the diesel engine preheater mode . The heater starts to automatically turn on and operate when the engine is running and the outside air temperature is below +5oC.
This mode was invented by engineers in order to heat up a diesel engine, which takes longer to heat up than a gasoline engine. A diesel engine requires preheating because at temperatures below -15oC the diesel engine may not reach operating temperature. Also, the heating in the cabin will be ineffective, and the inside of the car will be cool.

To do this, it is necessary that the outside air temperature be below +5oC, or preferably negative.
The climate control must be turned on, whether in auto or manual mode. The main thing is that it is not turned off with the “OFF” button, and the engine is started.
After starting the engine for 1 minute, the heater enters the heating mode. How can you tell if it worked or not? By the characteristic haze from the exhaust pipe of the heater, which is located at the front right wheel.
What happens when the Webasto heater starts? The coolant is heated in order to warm up the engine faster and achieve a more comfortable temperature in the cabin.
The second operating mode of the Webasto heater is pre-start. This means that by pressing the remote control, the boiler can be started without leaving home, that is, the Webasto can be started in advance of the engine starting.
On Freelander 2 until 2012, Webasto does not heat the interior; only the engine heats up here.
On Freelander 2, starting from the 2013 model year, the algorithm for operating the heater in pre-start mode was revised and now the heater fan works here when the boiler is running - the interior warms up, the engine warms up.
Conditions for starting Webasto in preheating mode
In order for the Webasto heater to start in preheating mode, the following conditions must be met:
- outside air temperature should be below +5oC;
- climate control must be turned on;
- the battery must be charged and its voltage must be at least 11.4V;
- the car doors must be closed and the car must be guarded;
- the antifreeze temperature should be 15oC or less;
You need to understand that if the engine is still a little warm, the heater may not start.
Another important point is the health of the battery, especially important on cars that are equipped with a battery monitoring system (BMC). If the system believes that the battery is undercharged, the heater may not start.
If the remaining fuel in the tank is less than 8 liters, the system may write a fault code to the additional heater, and the heater will be blocked. To unlock it, you will need to connect it to a diagnostic computer and clear fault codes.
To prevent this from happening, try to keep the fuel level above a quarter tank in winter. The fuel level error code blocks Webasto operation in all modes. Even after filling the fuel tank, Webasto will not work.
To start the Webasto boiler from the remote control, you need to hold the “ON” button on the remote control for 1 second. The LED will light up green for 2 seconds and then start blinking green approximately once every 3 seconds. This means that the boiler should have been started, but this does not mean that it is working.
To turn off the heater, just disarm the car. The heater will turn off automatically. Or simply press the "OFF" button for 2 seconds. The LED will turn red for 2 seconds and go off.
After starting the engine, Webasto does not obey the remote control. Priority for controlling the Webasto boiler goes to the vehicle systems; the heater will be controlled by the climate control unit.
The manufacturing plant claims a line-of-sight range of the key fob of about 500 meters, if there is no radio interference or other obstacles.
The LED on the remote control has a number of diagnostic functions.
If the LED flashes green, this means that the signal has been transmitted to the car and this connection is then maintained.
If the LED quickly blinks green when you press the “ON” button, this means that the signal has not reached the car (the receiver). There is no connection.
If the LED flashes orange, it means that the battery in the remote control is low and will soon fail. The battery needs to be replaced.
The red LED flashes only when the “OFF” button is pressed.
If you press the “ON” button and the green LED starts blinking quickly, this means the signal has not reached the car. In this case, either the distance is too great and the signal simply did not reach, or, if you are next to the car and see such a thing, most likely the key fob is not registered (“has become untied from the car”).
The key fob may become untied when replacing the battery or when removing the terminals. After replacing the battery, you must check whether the key fob works; if not, then attach it.
The easiest option is to remove the battery terminal (either “+” or “-”) for 5 seconds. Then put it in place and press the “OFF” button on the remote control within 5 seconds. The red LED will flash for 2-3 seconds, then go off. This means that the remote control is bound.
If the red LED blinks quickly, it means that the signal has not passed through and there is some problem.
If you don't want to remove the terminal, there is another way. You can pull out the fuse that powers the receiver. It is located in the fuse box in the luggage compartment. To be honest, it's not very convenient to get there.
The last option that the manufacturer offers is to remove the connector from the receiver. It is also located in the trunk under the trim on the left side. Getting there is also not very pleasant.
Therefore, the most convenient one is still the battery terminal.
The Webasto boiler is located behind the front right fender of the car. If you go lower, in the area of the front right wheel there is an exhaust pipe of the Webasto boiler. From there you can observe smoke when the boiler starts up.
The Webasto boiler has a muffler, which is designed to reduce noise during boiler operation. The boiler has an air inlet pipe. Please note that both the air intake pipe and the exhaust pipe should not be clogged with dirt, ice or anything else. You need to keep an eye on these tubes.
In the area of the fuel tank there is a fuel booster pump. It is separate for this system and has nothing to do with the engine power system.
When the Webasto boiler is operating, you can hear cyclic clicks from the rear right wheel - this means that the pump is working. It is impulsive, which is why it makes such sounds.
This is normal pump operation! Both in preheating mode and in preheater mode.
Webasto boiler malfunctions
The most common malfunction of a Webasto boiler is the destruction of the burner. It burns out over time.
Another common malfunction is a breakdown of the circulation pump, which is located under the panel near the windshield. The fuel pump may also be faulty.
Sometimes the Webasto control unit itself malfunctions. Then you have to change the block assembly.
In order to understand whether the boiler is working or not, you need to carry out diagnostics and testing yourself. The simplest thing is to go to the car and start the boiler from the remote control. Then approach the car from the right side and listen to whether there are any sounds or not, whether smoke is coming from the boiler exhaust pipe or not. You can put your hand under this pipe to check whether the exhaust is warm or not.
When operating from the remote control, the boiler should operate for 20-30 minutes. If the boiler has worked its time, then it is in good working order and there are no problems with it. If it was launched incorrectly, it will simply stall and will not start again.
Retrofitting Webasto on Freelander 2
Since the 2013 model year, Freelander 2 has interior heating and radio control. This car can be retrofitted with a GSM module. The advantage of the GSM module is that the boiler can be started by a call from a mobile phone or SMS. It will work wherever there is cellular coverage. Unlike the key fob, which has a distance limit of 100-200 meters.
On Freelander 2, until the 2012 model year, only the engine warms up, and on some cars Telestart was not even installed. It is possible to install Telestart on these cars. It is also possible to warm up the cabin, install a GSM module and a cabin fan control module.
Webasto diagnostics
If you have a suspicion that the Webasto boiler is not working correctly, is not working in certain modes or is not working at all, then come and we will diagnose it for free. Whether you want to repair it or not, it’s your business.
The owner can carry out preliminary diagnostics of Webasto on his own:
- You need to understand in what mode Webasto does not work. In reheating or preheating mode? It often happens that the Webasto does not start from the remote control, but works while the engine is running.
- Check if the remote control is connected, is the remote control battery good?
- If the remote control is linked, then you need to understand whether Webasto tries to start when you press the remote control or does not react at all (does not make sounds)?
- Do you remember if you brought the fuel level in the tank until the indicator came on?
All this information, which the owner can collect himself, saves time in identifying the cause in the service.
Webasto malfunctions
The most common causes of Webasto malfunction in the service practice of the LR-WEST service:
- The spark plug is faulty - burner.
- Webasto blocking based on fuel level in the tank.
- Dead remote control battery.
- The remote control is not registered.
- Fuel booster pump.
- Additional electric cooling pump
- Configuration settings failed
- Software failure or incorrect software has been uploaded.
- Malfunction of the “brains” of the Webasto module.
